Most "best cities" lists rank places you would visit for a week. This one asks a narrower question: if you have one night and roughly 24 hours on the ground, where does that time buy the most? We scored all 45 cities on our site the same way, on what you see, what you eat, what you do after dark, how far the day's route runs, how long the airport ride takes and what one night actually costs. Then we let the numbers sort them.
The result rewards cities that are dense and easy to reach over cities that are simply famous. Florence comes first because its 20-minute tram, short walking route and $76 (£57) January room support a sights score only one point below Rome's. Paris and New York, with perfect food scores, land in the middle because one night there means long rides and a big hotel bill. Every card below links to a full timed, priced plan for that city.

The ranking
Score = the Snack Score: the weighted average of six factors. How we score
Florence wins on balance rather than on any single headline. Its sights score (9) sits one point under Rome, London and Paris, but the airport tram reaches Santa Maria Novella in 20 minutes for $2.20 (£1.70; €2), the route is only 3.2 miles, and one night inside the old walls was $76 (£57) on Kayak for January 15, 2027. That combination lifts it past every bigger name. It suits couples and solo travelers who book ahead: the dome climb and the Uffizi both need timed tickets. The catch is the flight. None of our US hubs flies to Florence nonstop, so Americans connect in Europe or take the train from Rome.
Kraków comes second because it scores high on everything the data measures. The SKA1 train reaches Kraków Główny in 17 minutes for $5.10 (£3.80; PLN 20), a Kazimierz 3-star was $61 (£46) for January 15, 2027, and Wawel, the Main Square and Kazimierz sit on one 4-mile loop. Only food (7) keeps it off the top. It suits solo travelers and couples on a budget, with a late bar scene around Plac Nowy. The catch: Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine each take most of a day, so one night cannot hold them. Avoid a Monday, when Wawel's castle routes close.
Tokyo ties Kraków on points with a perfect food score (10), a strong night (9.5) and the lowest one-night cost in the top five: a Shinjuku 3-star was $65 (£49) for January 15, 2027, and the 24-hour subway ticket is $6.30 (£4.70; ¥1,000). Our own page hedges, though, and the verdict costs it 0.3 points. One night here means two districts, Shinjuku and Shibuya, not the city. It suits solo travelers on a stopover in Asia, ending in Golden Gai's tiny bars. The catch is jet lag: from the US or UK you lose much of the 24 hours to it. Shinjuku Gyoen closes on Mondays.
Singapore is the easiest long-haul city on the list for one night. The MRT from Changi to City Hall takes 32 minutes for $1.80 (£1.30; S$2.24), a Chinatown 3-star was $61 (£46) in January and $62 (£46) in June, and the evening is free: the Garden Rhapsody show at Supertree Grove at 7:45 p.m., then satay at Lau Pa Sat. Food (10) lifts it; sights (7) hold it at fourth, because the draws are hawker centres and gardens rather than famous buildings. It suits solo travelers and anyone breaking a flight to Asia or Australia. The catch is the heat on long daytime walks.
Rome has a perfect sights score (10) and a dense route: the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon and Trastevere fit in 3.5 miles. Cost is what holds it at fifth. One central night was $111 (£83) for January 15, 2027 and $203 (£152) for June 11, and the Leonardo Express is $15.70 (£11.80; €14) each way. The verdict is conditional, too, because the Vatican needs a second day. It suits couples who want a Trastevere dinner and the Trevi Fountain at 8 a.m., before the basin fee starts at 9 a.m. Book a Colosseum slot before you fly; from October 25, 2026 the last entry is 3:30 p.m.
London scores a perfect 10 for sights and for after dark, and only New York matches that pair. Cost sinks it to sixth: a Westminster 3-star was $115 (£86) in January and $186 (£139) in June, and the Elizabeth line from Heathrow is $21 (£15.50). One night buys a single corridor, from Westminster Abbey along the South Bank to Borough Market, Tate Modern, St Paul's and a West End show, so the verdict is conditional. It suits Americans: all ten of our US hubs fly to London nonstop. The catch is everything you skip, from the Tower to South Kensington. Westminster Abbey closes to sightseers on Sundays.
Prague is the most compact capital in the top ten. The castle, Malá Strana, Charles Bridge and the Old Town sit on one 3-mile line, and a Prague 1 3-star was $62 (£46) for January 15, 2027. Cost (8.5) and compactness (9.6) carry it; food (6.5) is its weakest score. It suits couples, with Charles Bridge after dark and the Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square from November 28, 2026 to January 6, 2027. The catch is crowds on the line every visitor walks, so the plan starts at the castle at 9 a.m. From the US, only JFK flies nonstop.
Venice has the shortest route in the top ten, 2.5 miles, and a 20-minute bus from the airport, so its data scores are high. Cost pulls it down: one night was $71 (£53) for January 15, 2027 but $168 (£126) for June 11, and the 24-hour vaporetto pass is $28 (£21; €25). It suits couples and solo travelers who want the city after the day-trippers leave: San Marco at dusk, a spritz on the Fondamenta de la Misericordia, the Grand Canal by night vaporetto. The catch is the June date. The access fee runs on 72 days in 2027, including June 11 to 13, though overnight guests have been exempt.
Hong Kong pairs strong food (9) and night (8.5) scores with a fast arrival: the Airport Express reaches Central in 24 minutes for $16.60 (£12.40; HK$130). Its route is long for one day, 6.9 miles across the harbour, and that holds it at ninth. It suits solo travelers: cha chaan teng counters, the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui, the Peak Tram after dark and Temple Street Night Market at 9:30 p.m. A Wan Chai 3-star was $69 (£52) for January 15, 2027. The catch is density. The center is steep and crowded from morning to midnight, and Lantau and the islands need a second day.
Istanbul has the cheapest night on the list: a Sultanahmet 3-star was $28 (£21) for January 15, 2027, and food scores a perfect 10. Two data factors pull it back to tenth. Its route is the joint longest in the top 25 at 9.4 miles, because dinner is across the Bosphorus in Kadıköy, and the metro from Istanbul Airport takes about 45 minutes with a change. Our verdict is conditional. It suits couples who want a sunset ferry and a late walk past Galata Tower. The catch is the morning: Hagia Sophia and Topkapı eat it whole, and Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays.
Porto is a data city: a 3.1-mile route, a metro from the airport to Trindade in 27 minutes for $2.60 (£1.90; €2.30), and a Ribeira 3-star at $64 (£48) for January 15, 2027. Sights (7) are what hold it at 11th; there is no single interior you have to see. It suits couples and solo travelers who want views and food: São Bento's tiles, lunch at the Mercado do Bolhão, then sunset from the Serra do Pilar terrace across the Dom Luís I Bridge. The catch is the hills and a quiet late night. From the US, JFK, Newark and Boston fly nonstop.
Seoul scores high on food (9), night (8.5) and cost, with a Myeongdong 3-star at $67 (£50) for January 15, 2027 and a central route of 4 miles. The airport is the problem. The AREX Express takes 43 minutes from Incheon Terminal 1 to Seoul Station for $9.80 (£7.30; ₩13,000), the second-slowest arrival in the top 25, and the verdict is conditional. It suits solo travelers: Gwangjang Market, Myeong-dong street food at 7 p.m. and a subway that is cheap and simple. Gyeongbokgung is closed Tuesdays. From January 1, 2027, US and UK visitors need a K-ETA before they board.
Copenhagen has the fastest airport ride in the top 25: the M2 metro reaches Kongens Nytorv in 14 minutes for $4.50 (£3.40; DKK 30). Its sights, food and night scores are all 8 or more. Cost holds it at 13th. A central 3-star was $104 (£78) for January 15, 2027 and $269 (£202) for June 11, one of the steepest summer jumps we found. It suits couples and solo travelers who want Rosenborg, Nyhavn and Tivoli after dark in one walk. The catch is the calendar: Tivoli is closed from January 4 to March 18, 2027, while Christmas in Tivoli runs November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
Madrid has a perfect night score (10): dinner on Calle de la Cava Baja in La Latina starts at 9:30 p.m. and the plan's last stop, the Mercado de San Miguel, is at 11:30 p.m. The airport ride costs it. The EMT Exprés bus to Cibeles and Atocha takes about 40 minutes from T4 for $5.60 (£4.20; €5), and a central 3-star was $118 (£88) for January 15, 2027. It suits solo travelers, since tapas counters are built for one, and couples who want sunset at the Temple of Debod. The catch: you see the Reina Sofía, not the Prado, and the Reina Sofía is closed on Tuesdays.
Paris scores 10 for sights and 10 for food and still comes 15th. The plan covers 8.5 miles, from Notre-Dame to Montmartre, so its compact score is 5.9; one central night was $96 (£72) in January and $162 (£121) in June; and the verdict is conditional, which costs 0.3 points. It suits couples and Londoners: Eurostar reaches Gare du Nord in 136 minutes from St Pancras. The catch is choice. A Friday Louvre slot, open until 9 p.m., anchors the day, and the Orsay and Versailles wait. The Marché des Enfants Rouges has been closed since a fire on October 11-12, 2026.
Lisbon is close and cheap at the airport end: the metro reaches Baixa-Chiado in about 20 minutes for $2.20 (£1.60; €1.92), and a Baixa 3-star was $89 (£67) for January 15, 2027. The verdict is conditional, because one day has to split between Belém and the old town, and that costs 0.3 points. It suits couples, with dusk at the Miradouro de Santa Luzia and dinner with fado in Alfama, and solo travelers who like food-hall counters. The catch is the hills: the castle, Alfama and Bairro Alto are steep and the cobbles are slippery when wet. Jerónimos is closed on Mondays.
Vienna has a perfect arrival score: the ÖBB Railjet reaches Wien Hauptbahnhof in 15 minutes for $4.60 (£3.40; €4.10). Rooms were cheap and steady, with a central 4-star at $71 (£53) in January and $78 (£58) in June. What holds it at 17th is the route, 8 miles, because Schönbrunn sits out of the center on its own metro line. It suits couples who want coffeehouses and the State Opera, plus the Rathausplatz Christmas market from November 13 to December 26, 2026. The catch: the best sights charge, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum has needed a booked time slot since September 8, 2026.
Amsterdam's arrival is close to perfect: the NS train runs from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal in 17 minutes for $6.20 (£4.60; €5.50). Price is the drag. A Centrum 3-star was $137 (£103) for January 15, 2027 and $230 (£172) for June 11, which gives it a cost score of 4.3, and food scores 6.5. It suits couples on the canal ring at night and solo travelers at Foodhallen. The catch is the Anne Frank House, the 5:30 p.m. stop in the plan, which you must book weeks ahead. From London, Eurostar runs direct to Amsterdam Centraal in 244 minutes.
Edinburgh has a compact 3.3-mile route, from the castle at 9:30 a.m. to Calton Hill at sunset, and a 30-minute tram from the airport for $10.50 (£7.90). Cost holds it at 19th: the same Premier Inn room was $99 (£74) for January 15, 2027 and $241 (£181) for June 11, and the city now adds a 5% visitor levy. It suits couples, solo travelers and Christmas visitors: Edinburgh's Christmas runs November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027 in East Princes Street Gardens. The catch is new charges, including St Giles', which has charged non-Scottish visitors since October 5, 2026. LNER takes 245 minutes from King's Cross.
New York scores a perfect 10 for sights, food and night, the only city on the list to do so. Cost and distance pull it to 20th. Its cost score (3.1) is the lowest in the top 25: a Financial District 4-star was $138 (£103) for January 15, 2027 and a Midtown one $307 (£230) for June 11. The route runs 9.4 miles from Central Park to Katz's, and the verdict is conditional. It suits Americans coming from Boston, Philadelphia or DC, and couples who want Broadway via TKTS. The catch: it is the wrong length after a transatlantic flight. The Met is closed Wednesdays.
Bath has the shortest route on the list, 1.6 miles, and our rail-city rule gives it a perfect arrival score: most visitors come on GWR from London Paddington, 73 minutes direct, and walk in from Bath Spa. Sights (7), food (6) and night (5.5) hold it at 21st. It suits couples: the Roman Baths on a timed ticket, a Sally Lunn's dinner and the Thermae rooftop pool after dark. The Z Hotel was $78 (£58) for January 15, 2027 and $160 (£120) for June 11. The catch: the spa admits only those 16 and over, and the center is quiet once it closes at 9 p.m.
Budapest has a strong night (8.5) and a cheap stay: a central 3-star was $71 (£53) for January 15, 2027 and the 24-hour travelcard is $8.50 (£6.30; HUF 2,750). Two data factors hold it at 22nd. Bus 100E takes about 40 minutes from the airport to Deák Ferenc tér, and the route spreads 6.6 miles over both banks. It suits solo travelers: two hours in the Széchenyi bath, then Gozsdu udvar and Szimpla Kert. Advent Bazilika runs November 13, 2026 to January 1, 2027. The catch is getting there from the US, because none of our US hubs flies nonstop.
Dublin has all ten of our US hubs on its nonstop list and a compact 3.7-mile route. Price holds it at 23rd. Our cheapest 3-star was $106 (£79) for January 15, 2027 and $192 (£144) for June 11, and food scores 6.5. It suits solo travelers, because the evening is the highlight: dinner at The Brazen Head, then a trad session at The Cobblestone at 9 p.m. The Dublin Express coach reaches O'Connell Bridge in 28 minutes from Terminal 2 for $10.10 (£7.60; €9). The catch: the Chester Beatty is closed until the end of December 2026.
York matches Bath on the data side: a 1.9-mile route inside the walls and a perfect arrival score, because nearly everyone comes by LNER from King's Cross in 105 minutes and walks in. Sights (7), food (6) and night (6) keep it at 24th. It suits couples and families: York Minster, Shambles Market, a booked Jorvik slot, tea at Bettys and the 8 p.m. ghost walk. A Travelodge inside the walls was $62 (£46) for January 15, 2027. The catch is flying in: Leeds Bradford has no rail link and no US flights. York Christmas Market runs November 12 to December 21, 2026, closed Tuesdays.
Barcelona has strong food (8) and night (8.5) scores, and every one of our US and UK hubs flies there nonstop. It comes 25th because of the verdict and the price. One night works only if you book a timed Sagrada Família slot and see the other Gaudí buildings from the street, so it is conditional. A central room was $102 (£76) for January 15, 2027 and $180 (£135) for June 11. It suits couples and solo travelers: lunch at La Boqueria, the beach at dusk, cava at El Xampanyet. The catch: La Boqueria is closed Sundays, which breaks the plan's first stop.
Each city gets a Snack Score out of 10. Three factors are editorial and scored on one scale for the whole site: sights in a day (30% of the score), food (15%) and after dark (10%). Three come straight from data: how compact the 24-hour route is (15%), how many minutes the fastest public ride from the airport takes (15%) and the cost of one night for one person sharing a double, which is half the average of two Friday room prices (January 15 and June 11, 2027, on Kayak) plus the airport ride both ways and a day ticket (15%).
The verdict on each city page also counts. A city we call "one night, if" loses 0.3 points, so a hedged city cannot outrank one with the same numbers and a clean verdict. Every formula, threshold and source is in how we score cities.
Why Florence beats Rome, London and Paris
On sights alone, Rome, London, Paris and New York all score 10 and Florence scores 9. The gap opens on the data. Florence's plan covers 3.2 miles (5.1 km) and the T2 tram from the airport takes 20 minutes for $2.20 (£1.70; €2). Its one-night cost works out to $66 (£49). Rome's is $119 (£89), London's $129 (£97) and Paris's $110 (£82), mostly because of the room.
Paris also loses on distance. Its plan runs 8.5 miles from Notre-Dame to Montmartre, and our page hedges the verdict because the Orsay and Versailles need a second day. Those two things take Paris from the top five to 15th. If you only care about the headline sights, read the factor chips on each card and sort by sights; the overall order is about value for one night, not fame.
If you want something specific, pick a different card
Flying from the US without a connection: Florence has no nonstop from any of our ten US hubs. Rome and Madrid have all ten, Kraków has Chicago O'Hare and Newark, and Prague has JFK.
A big night out: Madrid, London and New York score a perfect 10 after dark. Madrid's plan ends at the Mercado de San Miguel at 11:30 p.m.
Spending as little as possible: Istanbul ($24 (£18)), Tokyo ($45 (£34)) and Singapore ($48 (£36)) have the lowest one-night costs worldwide; in Europe it is Kraków at $50 (£37). See our cheap European city breaks.
No flight at all from London: Bath (73 minutes from Paddington), York (105 minutes from King's Cross) and Paris (136 minutes by Eurostar) are the fastest trains on the list.
Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Seoul: one night after a long flight
Four Asian cities make the top 12, and all four score 9 or 10 for food. They also score well on cost, because a central 3-star in Shinjuku, Chinatown, Wan Chai or Myeongdong was between $61 (£46) and $69 (£52) for January 15, 2027. The honest problem is jet lag. Our Tokyo page says one night there works only as two districts, and travelers arriving from the US or UK lose much of the day to the time change.
That makes them best as a stopover on the way to somewhere else, not as a trip in themselves. If that is your plan, compare the airports on the best stopover cities, where Singapore Changi and Hong Kong are scored on how easily you can leave the airport and get back.
Entry rules to check before you book
Most of this list is in the Schengen area. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running since April 10, 2026, so US and UK passport holders give fingerprints and a photo at the first Schengen border. ETIAS, the EU's travel authorization, is not running yet and has no start date; its fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20). US citizens visiting London, Edinburgh, York or Bath need a UK ETA, $27 (£20). UK citizens going to New York need an ESTA: $10.62 (£8) to apply plus $30 (£22) on approval.
Korea is the change to watch. K-ETA is waived for US and UK passports until December 31, 2026, and from January 1, 2027 you need one before you board for Seoul. The full country-by-country rules are in our transit and entry guide.
Who missed the top 25, and why
Bruges has one of the shortest routes we mapped and it is just outside the cut at 7.3. Its one-night cost of $140 (£105) is the problem. Berlin scores 9 after dark but its plan spreads across districts and our page hedges the verdict. Reykjavík, at 5.9, has the highest one-night cost in the dataset, $183 (£137), and a 45-minute ride from Keflavík. Miami, at 5.5, has the longest route on the site because its sights sit far apart.
Only one US city makes this list: New York. Philadelphia and New Orleans both score 7.3 and lead the best US cities for a 24-hour trip, but US hotel prices pull their cost scores down against Europe and Asia.
Dates that change the math
Our two price dates are a January Friday and a June Friday, and the gap between them is large in some cities. New York went from $138 (£103) to $307 (£230), Copenhagen from $104 (£78) to $269 (£202) and Edinburgh from $99 (£74) to $241 (£181). Tokyo, Singapore and Vienna barely moved. If you are going in summer, those last three look even better than their rank.
A few closures matter in 2026 and 2027. Tivoli in Copenhagen is closed from January 4 to March 18, 2027. Venice charges day-trippers its access fee on 72 days in 2027, including June 11 to 13. Dublin's Chester Beatty is closed until the end of December 2026. Each city page names the weekly closing day that breaks its plan, and our planning guide covers timing, bags and booking ahead.
Booking through these links supports this site at no cost to you. Prices move by date, so we do not print them here; the official prices we checked are in the page above.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best city for a 24-hour trip?
On our scores, Florence, at 8.6 out of 10. It is not the most famous city on the list, but everything you would see in one day sits on a 3.2-mile route, the tram from the airport takes 20 minutes, and a central room was $76 (£57) for a January Friday. Kraków and Tokyo are close behind at 8.5.
Is 24 hours enough to see a city?
It is enough to see one well-chosen slice of a city. In compact places like Florence, Prague, Venice, Bath and York, that slice is most of what visitors come for. In big cities like Paris, London, Tokyo and New York, our pages say plainly what you give up, and the score takes a small cut for it.
Which city is cheapest for a one-night trip?
Istanbul, where half a central double, the airport metro both ways and local transit came to $24 (£18). Tokyo ($45 (£34)) and Singapore ($48 (£36)) follow. In Europe, Kraków is cheapest at $50 (£37). These figures leave out flights and entry tickets.
What is the best city for a 24-hour trip from the US?
If you want a nonstop flight, Rome is the highest-ranked city that all ten of our US hubs fly to, followed by London and Istanbul. Florence, our #1, has no nonstop from the US. For a domestic one-nighter, Americans on the East Coast do best with New York, Philadelphia or Washington, DC.
Can you do London or Paris in 24 hours?
Yes, if you accept a corridor rather than the whole city. Our London plan runs from Westminster Abbey along the South Bank to St Paul's and a West End show. Our Paris plan pairs Notre-Dame with a Friday evening at the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower sparkle at 10 p.m. Both verdicts are "one night, if".
