24 Hours in Kraków
Kraków's old center is small and flat. Wawel Hill sits at the south end of the Old Town, the Main Square is about half a mile (0.8 km) north of it up Grodzka street, and the old Jewish district of Kazimierz starts a short walk south of the castle. Schindler's Factory is just across the Vistula. That puts the city's four big stops on one loop you can walk in a day, with a train station at the top of it.
It is also one of the cheapest nights in this guide. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel in the Old Town or Kazimierz with a guest score of 8 or more was $61 (£46) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, taxes in, and $77 (£58) for Friday, June 11, 2027. The airport train costs $5.10 (£3.80; PLN 20). The plan below starts at Wawel at 9 a.m., eats at a milk bar and a market square, and ends with a late drink in Kazimierz and on the Main Square.
At a glance
- Best for
- Couples, solo travelers and history readers who want a compact old town, cheap rooms and a late bar scene

The 24-hour plan
- 9:00 a.m.
Wawel Castle
Start on the hill when the castle opens. The 1st and 2nd floor route covers the royal private apartments, the State Rooms and the Ottoman tents, audio guide included. Tickets are sold in limited numbers, so buy online. Allow two hours, then look into the cathedral next door.
- 11:45 a.m.
Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą
Walk up Grodzka street to this milk bar at No. 43 for a cafeteria lunch of pierogi, soup or a cutlet, ordered at the counter.
- 12:45 p.m.
St. Mary's Basilica
On the Main Square. Tourist entry opens at 11:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday; buy the ticket at Plac Mariacki 7 and see the Veit Stoss altarpiece. Step outside on the hour for the trumpet call from the tower, then cross to the Cloth Hall.
- 2:00 p.m.
Kazimierz
Twenty minutes south on foot to the old Jewish district. Walk Szeroka street past the Old Synagogue and the Remuh cemetery wall.
- 3:15 p.m.
Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory
Cross the Vistula footbridge to Podgórze for the Museum of Kraków's exhibition on the city under Nazi occupation. Tickets are limited, so book a time; last entry is 90 minutes before closing.
- 6:30 p.m.
Plac Nowy
Back in Kazimierz, eat a zapiekanka, the open-faced baguette pizza, from Endzior in the round market hall, then try the bars around the square, such as Alchemia on Estery street.
- 9:00 p.m.
Main Square at night
Walk back up Grodzka to the square, lit and still busy, for a drink in one of the cellar bars under the old houses and the trumpet call at 10 p.m.
- 8:30 a.m.
Planty and the Barbican
Next morning, walk the Planty park ring to the Barbican and St. Florian's Gate, then five minutes on to Kraków Główny for the SKA1 train to the airport.
The route is 4.0 miles (6.5 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Wawel Castle routes are open Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays, and November 1 and 11, December 24 to 26 and 31); Schindler's Factory closes at 3 p.m. on Mondays and all day on the first Tuesday of the month; St. Mary's Basilica opens to visitors at 11:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sundays
How the 24 hours work
Start at the top of the day's list. Wawel Castle opens at 9 a.m., and the 1st and 2nd floor route, $24 (£18.20; PLN 95) with an audio guide, covers the royal private apartments, the State Rooms and the Ottoman tents. The castle sells these tickets in limited numbers, so buy online the day before. Allow two hours, and look into the cathedral beside it on the way out.
Then walk up Grodzka for lunch at the Pod Temidą milk bar and on to the Main Square. St. Mary's Basilica opens to visitors at 11:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sundays, for $5.10 (£3.80; PLN 20). The trumpet call is played from its taller tower every hour. After that, walk 20 minutes south to Kazimierz and on over the river to Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, $15.40 (£11.50; PLN 60), which also sells limited tickets. Dinner is a zapiekanka on Plac Nowy, and the night ends back on the Main Square.
The calendar matters more than the weather. The castle routes run Tuesday to Sunday, so a Monday breaks the morning. Schindler's Factory closes at 3 p.m. on Mondays and all day on the first Tuesday of each month. If it rains, swap the Kazimierz walk for the Rynek Underground museum under the square, $11.50 (£8.60; PLN 45), open to 8 p.m. Friday to Sunday.
Where to stay for one night
Stay inside the Planty ring of the Old Town or in Kazimierz. We priced both on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with the price type set to the stay total including all taxes and fees, and checked each cheap result's address:
- January 15, 2027: $61 (£46) at Aneks Kazimierz, a 3-star rated 8.4. A 4-star, Perfect Hotel in Kazimierz, rated 9.1, was $75 (£56). One listing at $60 (£45) was an aparthotel, and a $66 (£49) hotel sat north of the Planty, outside the area.
- June 11, 2027: $77 (£58), again at Aneks Kazimierz.
Kazimierz is the better base for this plan: the evening happens there, and Wawel is a 15-minute walk away. The Old Town is the better base for an early train, because Kraków Główny sits just outside its northern edge.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The airport has its own station, behind the multi-story car park and joined to the terminal by a covered footbridge. Koleje Małopolskie runs the SKA1 train from there to Kraków Główny every 30 minutes; the timetable valid from October 25, 2026 shows 17 minutes for the trip. The airport lists the fare at $5.10 (£3.80; PLN 20). Buy it from the machine on the train, from the conductor, or in apps such as KOLEO and Jakdojade. From Kraków Główny, the Main Square is about half a mile on foot.
City buses 209 and 300 also serve the airport, on ordinary KMK tickets. Inside the city, the 24-hour ticket for Zone I costs $5.10 (£3.80; PLN 20), but this plan is walkable and you may not need it.
Kraków Airport Taxi is the only official taxi at the airport. It charges flat fares by distance zone: $23 (£17.10; PLN 89) for 8 to 11.9 km, $28 (£21; PLN 109) for 12 to 14.9 km and $33 (£25; PLN 129) for 15 to 18.9 km. Book by phone, online or at the desk.
What to eat in 24 hours
Kraków eats cheaply and heavily. Five things to try:
- Pierogi at Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą: a milk bar at Grodzka 43, the old cafeteria format where you order soup, dumplings or a cutlet at the counter.
- Zapiekanka at Endzior: the open baguette with mushrooms and cheese, from the hatch in the round market hall on Plac Nowy in Kazimierz.
- Obwarzanek: the braided bread ring sold from blue street carts around the Old Town, a breakfast or walking snack.
- A drink at Alchemia: the candle-lit bar on Estery street, one corner of the Plac Nowy bar cluster.
- Mulled wine in Advent: the Christmas market on the Main Square sells grilled oscypek cheese and hot wine.
None of these places publishes a price list online, so we quote none. Milk bars close in the early evening, so keep them for lunch.
If you only have 12 hours
Keep Wawel, the Main Square and Kazimierz, and drop Schindler's Factory. Take the train in, walk from Kraków Główny through the Barbican and down Floriańska street to the square, see St. Mary's, go down Grodzka to Wawel and finish with a zapiekanka on Plac Nowy. That loop is about 2.5 miles (4 km).

Getting there from the US and the UK
From the US, the airport's airlines table on Wikipedia lists two nonstops from the hubs we track, both on LOT Polish Airlines: Chicago O'Hare, and Newark in season. Otherwise you connect in Warsaw or a Western European hub, or fly to Vienna or Prague and take the train.
From the UK, British Airways flies from Heathrow, easyJet and Wizz Air from Gatwick, easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair from Manchester, easyJet and Ryanair from Edinburgh, and Ryanair (plus Jet2 in season) from Stansted. There is no practical train from London.
Entry rules. US and UK citizens enter Poland visa-free for short stays. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026: you register fingerprints and a photo on first entry instead of getting a passport stamp. ETIAS is not running yet; the European Commission says it will announce the start date several months ahead, and the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20).
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are mild and light enough for the walking. Summer is busy on the Main Square, and winter is cold and dark early but cheap. In November, Wawel runs its Free November program, with free passes for selected exhibitions from the castle ticket offices or online a week ahead (the castle is shut on November 1 and mostly shut on November 11). From late November the Christmas market fills the Main Square. The City of Kraków's 2025 market ran November 28, 2025 to January 1, 2026; the city had not published 2026 dates when we checked. See how it compares on our Christmas market city breaks list. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures.

Where Kraków ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Old Town Krakow & Wawel Castle Walking Tour
Meet between the Barbican and St Florian's Gate (yellow Walkative sign); it ends at Wawel. Castle and cathedral interiors are not part of the walk (a reviewer confirms Wawel entry is extra). At about $25 it is a cheap first morning.

Krakow: Tipsy Polish Food Tour With History, Pierogi & Shots
The page shows $40 against a struck-through $57, so the lower price is a sale. The meeting point depends on the option. Alcohol is part of the format; a sober visitor gets less value.

Krakow Night Tour: Ghosts, Vampires and Legends of the Old Town
Meet on plac Mariacki beside St Mary's Basilica, just off the Market Square. Tea or coffee and snacks are listed as included.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day in Kraków enough?
For the city, yes. Wawel, the Main Square, Kazimierz and Schindler's Factory fit one walkable day. It is not enough if you also want Auschwitz-Birkenau or the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which each take most of a day.
How do I get from Kraków airport to the city center?
Take the SKA1 train from the airport station, reached by a covered footbridge from the terminal, to Kraków Główny. It runs every 30 minutes, takes 17 minutes and costs $5.10 (£3.80; PLN 20).
How much does Wawel Castle cost?
The 1st and 2nd floor route, which includes the royal apartments, the State Rooms and an audio guide, costs $24 (£18.20; PLN 95). The first floor alone is $14.60 (£10.90; PLN 57). Tickets are limited, and the routes are closed on Mondays.
Do I need to book Schindler's Factory in advance?
It is wise. The Museum of Kraków sells a limited number of tickets, $15.40 (£11.50; PLN 60), and last entry is 90 minutes before closing. On Mondays it is free but closes at 3 p.m., and advance booking is not possible on free days.
When is the Kraków Christmas market in 2026?
The City of Kraków had not published the 2026 dates when we checked on October 21, 2026. Its 2025 market on the Main Square ran from November 28, 2025 to January 1, 2026.
