24 Hours in Edinburgh

Airport tram: 30 min to center One night from $99 (£74) Whole plan on foot

Edinburgh is built for a one-night trip. The Old Town runs downhill from the castle to Holyrood along one street, the New Town sits across Princes Street Gardens, and both viewpoints, Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat, are walks rather than rides. The whole plan below is on foot, and the longest leg is the climb on Saturday morning.

Getting in is simple. The tram from the airport reaches Princes Street in about 30 minutes for $10.50 (£7.90), and the fastest LNER train from London King's Cross takes 4 hours 5 minutes. A New Town room on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $99 (£74). Two things changed in 2026: a 5% visitor levy on accommodation, and an entry ticket at St Giles' Cathedral.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 9:30 a.m.

    Edinburgh Castle

Be at the gate when it opens at 9:30 a.m. and give it two hours for the Crown Jewels, St Margaret's Chapel and the view from the ramparts. Timed tickets often sell out online, and once they do, the castle sells none at the door; the walk-up price is $35 (£26).

    $31 (£24) Book ahead
  2. 11:45 a.m.

Down the Royal Mile to St Giles' Cathedral

Walk downhill from the castle to the High Kirk. Since October 5, 2026 visitors from outside Scotland pay to enter; the ticket includes the Thistle Chapel. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays.

    $16 (£12)
  3. 12:45 p.m.

    Lunch at Oink, Victoria Street

The curved street of colored shopfronts below George IV Bridge. Oink carves a whole hog roast into rolls: the 160g Oink is $12.20 (£9.15). It opens at 11 a.m. and closes when the pig is gone.

    Free
  4. 1:30 p.m.

    National Museum of Scotland

Five minutes away on Chambers Street, free and open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Take the lift to the rooftop terrace for the castle view, then the Scottish galleries.

    Free
  5. 3:30 p.m.

    Calton Hill

Cross Princes Street and climb the steps from Waterloo Place. The free view takes in the castle, Arthur's Seat and the Firth of Forth; in winter you are up there for sunset.

    Free
  6. 6:00 p.m.

    Dinner at Howies Waterloo

A Georgian hall at the foot of Calton Hill, 29 Waterloo Place. Order Cullen skink, $13.70 (£10.25), and the haggis with neeps and tatties, $13.30 (£9.95). The two-course early-dining deal runs Sunday to Thursday only.

    Free
  7. 8:30 p.m.

    Folk music at Sandy Bell's

A small pub at 25 Forrest Road with traditional music sessions every night. No ticket and no stage; find a corner and order a dram.

    Free
  8. 8:30 a.m.

    Arthur's Seat (Saturday)

Walk to the foot of the Royal Mile and climb the extinct volcano in Holyrood Park before the crowds. Free; wear real shoes, the top is rocky and windy. Waverley station is downhill from the park on foot.

    Free

The route is 3.3 miles (5.3 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Edinburgh Castle open daily (last entry 4 p.m. October to March, 5 p.m. April to September); St Giles' opens at 1 p.m. on Sundays and charges non-Scottish visitors since October 5, 2026; Howies' early-dining deal not on Fridays or Saturdays

How the 24 hours work

Start at the top and walk down. Edinburgh Castle opens at 9:30 a.m. and is busiest late morning, so be at the gate at opening. Timed tickets often sell out online, and the castle says that once they have, there are none at the door. From there the Royal Mile leads down to St Giles', then a short detour reaches Victoria Street for lunch and the free National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street.

Mid-afternoon you cross to the New Town and climb Calton Hill. In winter the sun goes down early, so this is a sunset stop; in summer it is a long-light one. Dinner is at the foot of the hill, and the folk pub is back across the Old Town on Forrest Road. Saturday starts with Arthur's Seat, the volcano in Holyrood Park.

The plan works on any day of the week, with two catches. St Giles' opens only at 1 p.m. on Sundays, and the castle's last entry is 4 p.m. from October to March. If it rains, skip Calton Hill and give the museum longer; if it is very windy, the Arthur's Seat summit is not worth the risk.

Where to stay for one night

We priced the Old Town and the New Town on Kayak for two adults on a Friday, 3 stars or better, guest rating 8 or more, with taxes and fees in the total:

  • New Town: Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre York Place/St James Quarter was the cheapest qualifying room on both dates, $99 (£74) on January 15, 2027 and $241 (£181) on June 11, 2027. It is a short walk from Calton Hill and the tram.
  • Old Town: Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre Royal Mile was $111 (£83) in January and $267 (£200) in June, closer to the castle and the folk pub.

Since July 24, 2026, the City of Edinburgh Council charges a 5% visitor levy on the accommodation cost of the first five nights. Kayak does not say whether its totals include it, so budget 5% on top. In August, festival month, book as early as you can.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

The tram leaves the stop outside the terminal every 7 minutes in the daytime. The airport puts the ride to the city center at 30 minutes. An airport single is $10.50 (£7.90), and an open return is $12.70 (£9.50), the better buy if you fly home.

The Airlink 100 bus is cheaper, $8 (£6) single, runs around the clock and stops at Waverley Bridge. Taxis leave from the Capital Cars rank at the East Terminus; the airport says fares follow the council's metered rates and publishes no fixed figure.

By train you arrive at Waverley, in the gully between the Old and New Towns, a few minutes' walk from both hotels above.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • A hog roast roll at Oink, 34 Victoria Street. The 160g Oink is $12.20 (£9.15), the smaller Piglet $8.90 (£6.65). Open from 11 a.m. until it sells out.
  • Cullen skink at Howies Waterloo, smoked haddock and potato soup, $13.70 (£10.25).
  • Haggis, neeps and tatties, also at Howies, $13.30 (£9.95), with a suggested dram of Glengoyne 12 for $9.30 (£6.95) more.
  • Sticky toffee pudding to finish, on the same menu.
  • A dram at Sandy Bell's, with the evening's folk session.

Howies' two-course early-dining offer runs Sunday to Thursday only, so a Friday dinner is à la carte. For cities where food is the main event, see the best food cities for 24 hours.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the castle, the Royal Mile, lunch on Victoria Street and Calton Hill. Drop the museum, the folk pub and Arthur's Seat. That is about six hours in town plus the tram both ways, and it still includes the one paid sight worth booking.

With less than that, walk the Royal Mile and climb Calton Hill, both free, and skip the castle rather than rush it.

What 24 hours costs

ItemJanuaryJune
Hotel, one night (whole room)$99 (£74)$241 (£181)
Airport tram, open return$12.70 (£9.50)$12.70 (£9.50)

Add the 5% visitor levy on the room if Kayak's total leaves it out, and food. You will not need a transit pass in the center, but if it pours, the City DAY ticket for buses and trams is $8 (£6), or $7.60 (£5.70) as a contactless cap.

Getting there from the US and the UK

Edinburgh has real transatlantic service. Delta flies from JFK, United from Newark and Washington Dulles, and seasonal flights come from Atlanta and Boston (Delta), Boston and JFK (JetBlue), JFK (American) and Chicago O'Hare (United). Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and Dallas have no nonstop.

US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20) on GOV.UK, valid two years. British travelers need nothing.

From England, British Airways flies from Heathrow, easyJet from Gatwick and Stansted, and Ryanair from Stansted. The train is the calmer choice: LNER's fastest King's Cross service takes 4 hours 5 minutes, and it stops at York on the way. See the best city breaks by train from London, or pair this with Glasgow, the other end of the Scottish central belt.

When to go

Winter is cheap and dark early, which suits a castle-and-museum day. Spring and autumn bring better light for the hills without summer prices. August is festival month, so book early. Edinburgh's Christmas runs from November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with the main market in East Princes Street Gardens; see our Christmas list and the best one-night breaks in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough in Edinburgh?

Yes, for the castle, the Royal Mile, the National Museum and the two viewpoints, which are all within walking distance. Leith, the Royal Yacht Britannia and day trips to the Highlands need more time.

Do you need to book Edinburgh Castle tickets in advance?

Yes. The castle says tickets often sell out online, and when they do, none are sold at the gate. An adult ticket is $31 (£24) online and $35 (£26) walk-up. It opens at 9:30 a.m. daily.

Is St Giles' Cathedral free?

Not any more for most visitors. Since October 5, 2026, general admission is $16 (£12) for visitors aged 16 or over who do not live in Scotland. The ticket includes the Thistle Chapel and guided tours, and lasts 12 months.

How do you get from Edinburgh Airport to the city center?

The tram takes about 30 minutes to Princes Street and costs $10.50 (£7.90) single or $12.70 (£9.50) open return. The Airlink 100 bus is $8 (£6) and runs 24 hours.

Is there a tourist tax in Edinburgh?

Yes. For stays from July 24, 2026, the city charges a 5% visitor levy on the accommodation cost of the first five nights of a booking made after October 1, 2025.
