24 Hours in Madrid
Madrid is a city you do in one long day and one late night. Overnight flights from the US land early, the Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs 24 hours for a flat $5.60 (£4.20; €5), and the center between Atocha, the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace is small enough to cross on foot in half an hour. What makes it work for a trip snack is the clock: a 9:30 p.m. dinner is normal, and the city is still busy at midnight.
This plan picks two museums you can reach and book cleanly, the Reina Sofía for Picasso's Guernica and the Thyssen-Bornemisza for a tour of European painting, and fills the hours between with a park, a sandwich, a palace square and a sunset. The Prado is two minutes from both. We could not load its official ticket page on October 21, 2026, so we do not quote its price here; if it is your priority, swap it for the Thyssen on the second morning. For a second city on the same trip, see 24 hours in Barcelona.

The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Museo Reina Sofía
Start with Picasso's Guernica while you are fresh. Tickets before the free evening hours carry a set time slot, so book online; the museum is closed on Tuesdays.
- 12:30 p.m.
Retiro Park
Walk up the Paseo del Prado and into the park for the lake and the Palacio de Velázquez; the Palacio de Cristal is closed for restoration.
- 2:30 p.m.
Calamari sandwich on the Plaza Mayor
Lunch the Madrid way: a bocadillo de calamares from one of the bars on the streets off the arcaded square.
- 4:00 p.m.
Plaza de Oriente and the Royal Palace
Ten minutes west. Sit in the gardens facing the palace facade and the opera house.
- 6:00 p.m.
Temple of Debod at sunset
A 15-minute walk north to the Egyptian temple on its ridge, the city's sunset spot. In summer, push this stop later.
- 9:30 p.m.
Tapas on Calle de la Cava Baja, La Latina
Madrid's dinner hour starts now. Graze along the street's tapas bars, one plate and one drink at each.
- 11:30 p.m.
Mercado de San Miguel
Five minutes north. The glass market hall stays open until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; churros at Chocolatería San Ginés are a short walk away.
- 10:00 a.m. (Saturday)
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
Seven centuries of painting in one building on the Paseo del Prado. The collection ticket has no time slot; only the ground-floor temporary show does.
The route is 4.6 miles (7.4 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Museo Reina Sofía is closed on Tuesdays and on January 1 and 6, May 1 and December 24, 25 and 31; the Thyssen opens only from noon to 4 p.m. on Mondays and closes on January 1, May 1 and December 25.
How the 24 hours work
Start at the Reina Sofía at 10 a.m. General admission is $13.50 (£10.10; €12), and outside the free evening hours each ticket carries a set time slot, so book it online. The museum opens 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. except Sundays, when it closes at 2:30 p.m., and it is closed on Tuesdays. Entry is free from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on open weekdays and Saturdays, but the museum itself says that is one of its busiest moments.
From there you walk north up the Paseo del Prado into Retiro Park, then west through Sol to the Plaza Mayor for a late lunch. The Royal Palace and the Temple of Debod come in the late afternoon, as the light drops. After a rest, dinner is a tapas crawl on Calle de la Cava Baja in La Latina, and the night ends at the Mercado de San Miguel, which stays open until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (midnight the rest of the week).
On the second morning the Thyssen-Bornemisza opens at 10 a.m. A general ticket is $15.70 (£11.80; €14) and needs no time slot unless you add the ground-floor temporary show. If it rains, skip the Temple of Debod and spend the hour in the Thyssen on Saturday night instead, when it stays open to 11 p.m.
Where to stay for one night
Stay inside Centro, the district that holds Sol, Huertas, Malasaña and La Latina. We priced it on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, taxes and fees in, and skipped the small hostales and aparthotels that Kayak files as 3-star:
- Plaza de España and Santo Domingo: the cheapest qualifying hotel on January 15, 2027 was $118 (£88), a few minutes from the Temple of Debod and the Royal Palace.
- Sol and Callao: the cheapest on June 11, 2027 was $167 (£125), central for everything on this route.
- Huertas (Barrio de las Letras): closest to the museums and the Paseo del Prado, with bars under your window.
Light sleepers should ask for an interior room. Madrid's streets are loud until late, which is the point of coming.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs from Terminals 1, 2 and 4 to Plaza de Cibeles and the Atocha interchange, around the clock, for $5.60 (£4.20; €5) paid by card or cash on board. EMT estimates 30 minutes from Atocha to T1 and 40 minutes to T4 in normal traffic. Buses leave every 15 to 20 minutes from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and every 35 minutes at night, when they stop at Cibeles.
The metro is the other option. Line 8 serves the terminals, and with the 1-day Abono Turístico for Zone A, $11.60 (£8.70; €10.30), you do not pay the airport supplement. Note that the pass runs by calendar day, not 24 hours.
Taxis charge a flat $37 (£28; €33) between the airport and anywhere inside the M-30 ring road, day or night, with no supplements. That covers every hotel on this page. High-speed trains from Barcelona arrive at Atocha, next to the Reina Sofía.
What to eat in 24 hours
- A bocadillo de calamares from a bar off the Plaza Mayor: fried squid rings in a crusty roll, the city's standard cheap lunch.
- Tapas on Calle de la Cava Baja in La Latina. Order one plate and one drink per bar and move on.
- A vermouth on tap before dinner, a Madrid habit.
- Oysters, croquetas or ham at the Mercado de San Miguel, a glass market hall of counters by the Plaza Mayor.
- Chocolate con churros at Chocolatería San Ginés, in the passage behind the San Ginés church, to finish the night.
Lunch is late and dinner later, so eat when Madrid eats or you will find dining rooms half empty. More options are in our best food cities for 24 hours.
If you only have 12 hours
Keep one museum and the evening. Spend two hours at the Reina Sofía or the Thyssen, walk through Sol to the Plaza Mayor for lunch, see the palace from the Plaza de Oriente and finish with tapas in La Latina. Retiro and the Temple of Debod are the first stops to drop. If you are passing through on a long connection, our best European cities for a 24-hour layover ranking compares the airport rides.
What 24 hours costs
Per person, two adults sharing a January room:
- Hotel, half a $118 (£88) double: $59 (£44)
- Exprés Aeropuerto both ways: $11.20 (£8.40; €10)
- Reina Sofía: $13.50 (£10.10; €12)
- Thyssen-Bornemisza: $15.70 (£11.80; €14)
That is about $99 (£75) before food and drink. The route is walkable, so you can skip a transit pass. Sharing a flat-fare taxi both ways instead of the bus adds about $26 (£19.30; €23) per person.
Getting there from the US and the UK
Madrid-Barajas is Spain's long-haul hub. Every US gateway we track has a scheduled nonstop, a few only in summer: New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. From the UK, Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh all have nonstops. There is no direct train from London.
US and UK citizens need no visa for a short stay. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at all Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026: on a first entry your fingerprints and photo are recorded and passports are no longer stamped. ETIAS has not started; the EU will announce the date several months ahead, and the fee will be $22 (£16.80; €20). Our entry rules guide tracks both.
When to go
Spring and fall are the easy seasons for a day on foot. Summer afternoons are hot, so the late Madrid timetable makes sense: rest after lunch and go out after dark. Winter days are short and bright, and the evening plan works year round. Check the Reina Sofía's closures before you book: besides Tuesdays it shuts on January 1 and 6, May 1 and December 24, 25 and 31.

Where Madrid ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Teatro Flamenco Madrid: Live the Flamenco Experience
The ticket covers the show; a welcome drink comes only with the option that includes it. Doors open 30 minutes before the show. The page shows $31 against a struck-through $36, so the lower price is a sale.

Madrid: Tapas & Wine Tasting Tour with Local Guide
Meet at Plaza Santa Ana by the bronze statue of Lorca, in front of the theater. Extra drinks such as cocktails and tips are not included. Madrid eats late, so an evening slot is the natural fit.

Frequently asked questions
Is 24 hours in Madrid enough?
For one big museum, the old center and a proper night out, yes. You will not fit the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Royal Palace interiors into one day with any pleasure; pick one or two.
How much is a taxi from Madrid airport to the city center?
A flat $37 (£28; €33) to anywhere inside the M-30 ring road, 24 hours a day, with no supplements for luggage or night.
When is the Reina Sofía free?
From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday to Saturday, and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. You still need a ticket, which you can book online. It is closed on Tuesdays. General admission is $13.50 (£10.10; €12).
What time do people eat dinner in Madrid?
Late by US and UK standards. This plan books the tapas crawl for 9:30 p.m. and that still counts as early; on weekends the bars of La Latina and the Mercado de San Miguel, open until 1 a.m., stay full well after that. Lunch is the main meal of the day.
Is there a 24-hour metro pass in Madrid?
The Abono Turístico covers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 days. The 1-day Zone A pass is $11.60 (£8.70; €10.30), but it runs by calendar day, not by 24 hours from first use. It covers the airport metro without the supplement.
