Hong Kong Layover
Hong Kong rewards a layover more than almost any hub. US and UK passport holders need no visa, the Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in Central in 24 minutes, and the airport itself runs free layover tours for connections of more than 7 hours.
This page covers the airport and the clock: how much time you need, how to get in and back, and what fits into 6, 12 or 24 hours. For a full day and a night in the city, use our 24 hours in Hong Kong plan.

Minimum layover to leave the airport: 6.0 hours (5 h 33 min, rounded up). Add an hour if you check a bag through security again or connect between terminals.
In-town check-in at Hong Kong Station closes 90 minutes before departure (Cathay Pacific counters 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.); HKIA asks passengers to be at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before departure
Can you leave the airport on a layover?
Yes. The US State Department says no visa is required for stays of 90 days or less, with at least one month of passport validity beyond your departure date. The UK Foreign Office says British passport holders can visit for up to 6 months without a visa. Note that Hong Kong no longer accepts BN(O) passports for immigration clearance: use a full British passport.
There is no pre-travel authorization and no online arrival card to file on the official pages we checked. If you stay airside you simply follow the transfer signs to the departures level and go through security again. Our transit visa guide compares this with the other Asian hubs.
How long a layover do you need?
HKIA asks passengers to be at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before departure, and the in-town check-in at Hong Kong Station closes 90 minutes before. Cathay Pacific's counter there runs from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. If your bags are checked through, plan to be back at the airport about two hours before departure to clear security and departures immigration.
The ride is 24 minutes each way, with trains about every 10 minutes from 5:54 a.m. to 12:48 a.m. Add an hour to land, clear immigration and walk to the train, and the arithmetic is simple: a 6-hour layover leaves about two hours in Central, and 8 hours leaves four.
The free HKIA tours set their own threshold: more than 7 hours between flights. The airport says to leave enough time for transfer procedures and, if you must reclaim baggage, to plan for that too.
Getting into town and back
Airport Express. MTR's fare table lists an adult single from the airport to Hong Kong Station at $15.30 (£11.50; HK$120) when you tap an Octopus, a contactless bank card or a QR code, or $16.60 (£12.40; HK$130) for a paper single. Kowloon Station is one stop earlier. Cathay Pacific's online booking perks include 20% off Airport Express tickets, valid until October 31, 2026.
Taxi. The airport's August 2026 transport leaflet gives approximate red urban taxi fares including tolls: $48 (£36; HK$375) to Central or Admiralty and $37 (£28; HK$290) to Tsim Sha Tsui, plus $0.80 (£0.60; HK$6) for each piece of baggage. The train is faster to Central at most hours.
Coming back. If you have a separate ticket and must check in again, Hong Kong Station's in-town check-in lets you drop bags from 24 hours to 90 minutes before departure with Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA Air, Hong Kong Airlines, Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Mandarin Airlines, then ride to the airport hands-free.
What to do with 6 hours
Ride straight to Hong Kong Station and walk to the Central Ferry Piers. Cross Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui and walk the waterfront to the Avenue of Stars for the skyline view, then cross back and take the Airport Express from Hong Kong Station. That loop keeps you near the train the whole time.
If you land in the evening, the harbor is at its best after dark. With less than about 5 hours, stay airside: the free shower rooms near Gates 12 and 43 are open 24 hours.
What to do with 12 hours
Twelve hours is enough for the harbor and the hills. Start with a dim sum lunch in Central or Sheung Wan, ride the Peak Tram up Victoria Peak, then come down for the Star Ferry and Tsim Sha Tsui. Cathay Pacific's stopover page lists 15% off The Peak's combo tickets for its passengers.
Or let the airport plan it. The HKIA Free Layover Tours run three itineraries: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to Yat Tung Market and Ma Wan 1868, noon to 4 p.m. to Wong Tai Sin Temple and the markets of Sham Shui Po, and 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. to West Kowloon and the Avenue of Stars for the night view.
What to do with 24 hours
With a full day, book a hotel in Central, Wan Chai or Tsim Sha Tsui and follow our 24-hour Hong Kong plan. Leave your big bag at the airport's storage desk or at Hong Kong Station's left-baggage counter so you travel light.
Hong Kong also pairs well with a second Asian stop on the same ticket. Compare Singapore Changi, where you can sleep airside, and Taipei, with its free half-day tours, in our best stopover cities ranking.
Free tours and stopover deals
HKIA Free Layover Tours. Open to transit passengers at HKIA with more than 7 hours between flights who meet Hong Kong's entry rules. Reserve one tour up to three months ahead, or register on arrival at Transfer Desk E1 on the Arrivals Level (L5) of Terminal 1, before immigration. Guides meet you at Counters A03 and A15 in Arrivals Hall A, after immigration. If no free tour fits, the Trip.com counter at A15 sells paid tours.
Cathay Pacific stopover. When you book, choose "Stopover flight and days" to stop in Hong Kong for 1 to 7 days. The offers are perks, not free nights: guaranteed room upgrades or late check-out at The Mira, Royal Pacific and Prudential Hotel, up to 50% off a Citybus Dayrider, and 20% off the Airport Express. See our stopover programs guide for airlines that do pay for the hotel.
Staying airside: lounges, showers and luggage
HKIA has no transit hotel inside the restricted area. The nearest bed is the Regal Airport Hotel, which the airport describes as a two-minute walk from Terminal 1, but you must clear immigration to reach it. Airside, the Plaza Premium Lounges in the East Hall (near Gate 1) and West Hall (near Gate 60) are open 24 hours for a fee, and a Shower and Massage space near Gate 60 also runs around the clock.
Luggage. S.F. Express stores bags on Level 5 of Terminal 1, landside, at $1.80 (£1.30; HK$14) per piece per hour or $21 (£15.80; HK$165) per day. In town, Hong Kong Station's left baggage counter near Exit B charges $7.60 (£5.70; HK$60) for up to 3 hours and $11.10 (£8.30; HK$87) for 3 to 24 hours, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Where Hong Kong ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Hong Kong: Victoria Harbour Evening Cruise with Drinks
Only the 7:40pm sailing includes the Symphony of Lights, which is free to watch from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade anyway, and one recent review says the show was cancelled on their night. The US-dollar page would not load for us; the UK page showed from GBP 11 (the US listing card showed about $12).
Rating as shown on GetYourGuide

Hong Kong: 7-Course Hong Kong Street & Restaurant Food Tour
Meet at Sheung Wan MTR Exit E2 (follow the platform signs, because Exit E cannot be reached from the A to D concourse); it ends at Central Market. It cannot handle dietary restrictions and is not suitable for vegetarians or halal diets.

Hong Kong: Alternative Hong Kong Caged Home Walking Tour
Meet inside Prince Edward MTR at Exit D. The herbal-tea stop at Lui Seng Chun was marked closed until April 2026 on the page, so expect it to be skipped or swapped. A short, sober counterweight to the skyline; pair it with the harbour at night.
