24 Hours in Rome

Leonardo Express: 32 min One night from $111 (£83) Book a Colosseum time slot

Rome packs more headline sights into a walkable center than almost anywhere, which makes one night both tempting and frustrating. You can see the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain in a day. You cannot add the Vatican Museums without rushing everything. This plan picks ancient and baroque Rome, and leaves St Peter's for the next trip.

Getting in is easy. Trenitalia's Leonardo Express runs nonstop from Fiumicino to Roma Termini every 15 minutes and takes 32 minutes. A ticket is $15.70 (£11.80; €14). Two things have changed in 2026: the Trevi Fountain now charges to stand at the basin, and the Pantheon ticket went up on July 1. Both are below. If you are planning an Italian rail trip, see 24 hours in Florence and 24 hours in Venice.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 10:30 a.m.

    The Colosseum

Two metro stops from Termini on line B. The 24-hour ticket books a fixed entry time for the Colosseum and covers the Forum and Palatine; you cannot enter at another time, and slots sell out, so book before you fly.

    $20 (£15.10; €18) Book ahead
  2. 12:00 p.m.

The Roman Forum and the Palatine

Same ticket. Walk the Via Sacra and climb the Palatine for the view over the Forum. In winter the park's last entry is 3:30 p.m., so do it now.

    Free
  3. 2:00 p.m.

Pizza bianca at Antico Forno Roscioli

Walk west past Piazza Venezia to the bakery on Via dei Chiavari for pizza by weight eaten at the counter, a minute from Campo de' Fiori.

    Free
  4. 3:15 p.m.

    The Pantheon

Ten minutes north. Entry is paid since 2023 and rose on July 1, 2026; it is open daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., last entry 6:30 p.m.

    $7.90 (£5.90; €7)
  5. 4:30 p.m.

    Piazza Navona

Five minutes west. Walk the length of the oval square past Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers as the afternoon light goes.

    Free
  6. 7:30 p.m.

Dinner in Trastevere, by Piazza di Santa Maria

Cross Ponte Sisto into Trastevere for cacio e pepe or carbonara in one of the trattorias in the lanes around the church square. Book on a Friday.

    Free
  7. 10:00 p.m.

Ponte Sisto and the river at night

Walk back over the footbridge with the dome of St Peter's lit up downstream, then through Campo de' Fiori to bed.

    Free
  8. 8:00 a.m. (Saturday)

The Trevi Fountain before the crowds

The 2 euro fee to stand at the basin applies from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; the piazza view is free. Come early and the steps are nearly empty.

    Free
  9. 9:00 a.m.

    The Spanish Steps

Seven minutes north. Climb to Trinità dei Monti for the view down Via Condotti, then take metro line A from Spagna to Termini for the Leonardo Express.

    Free

The route is 3.5 miles (5.7 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

The Colosseum park is closed December 25 and January 1, and from October 25, 2026 to February 28, 2027 the last entry is 3:30 p.m. (closing 4:30 p.m.). The Pantheon is closed January 1, August 15 and December 25. The Trevi Fountain basin fee applies daily 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

How the 24 hours work

The route runs from the ancient city west to the river, then north the next morning. Start at the Colosseum, two metro stops from Termini on line B. The standard ticket is $20 (£15.10; €18), valid 24 hours for the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine. You book a fixed entry time for the Colosseum, and the park says you cannot go in at another time. Slots sell out, so book before you fly. The park is closed December 25 and January 1. From October 25, 2026 to February 28, 2027 the last entry is 3:30 p.m. and it closes at 4:30 p.m., so the Forum comes straight after the Colosseum.

From the Forum you walk past Piazza Venezia to Campo de' Fiori for lunch, then to the Pantheon. Since July 1, 2026 the full ticket is $7.90 (£5.90; €7), up from 5 euros; 18 to 25-year-olds pay $2.20 (£1.70; €2) and under-18s go free. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Piazza Navona is five minutes away, and Trastevere is across Ponte Sisto for dinner.

The Trevi Fountain moves to Saturday morning on purpose. Since February 2, 2026, Rome charges $2.20 (£1.70; €2) to enter the basin area in front of the fountain, daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; residents of Rome and under-5s are exempt. At 8 a.m. you get the fountain before the fee and before the crowds. If it rains, swap the Forum for a longer stop in the Pantheon and the churches around Navona.

Where to stay for one night

Stay in the centro storico, Monti or Trastevere. We priced them on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with taxes and fees in Kayak's stay total. Many of the cheapest listings in central Rome are guest houses and suite rentals rather than hotels, so we skipped those:

  • Via Sistina, by the Spanish Steps: the cheapest qualifying hotel on January 15, 2027 was $111 (£83), a short walk from the Trevi Fountain and the Spagna metro.
  • The Aventine: the cheapest on June 11, 2027 was $203 (£152), a small hotel on Piazza Santa Prisca, quiet and close to the Circus Maximus.
  • Trastevere: the best base for evenings, with hotels from about the June price.

The hotel adds Rome's tourist tax. Roma Capitale's current table sets it at $6.70 (£5; €6) per person per night in a 3-star hotel and $8.40 (£6.30; €7.50) in a 4-star.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

The Leonardo Express is the fastest option: 32 minutes nonstop to Termini, every 15 minutes, $15.70 (£11.80; €14). Trenitalia sells four tickets bought together for $45 (£34; €40). From Termini, metro line B goes to the Colosseum and line A to Spagna.

Taxis from Fiumicino charge a fixed fare of $62 (£46; €55) to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, which covers the whole of this plan, with all surcharges included. Use only white licensed taxis with a roof sign; the airport warns that other vehicles may charge more.

For the city's buses and metro, a single BIT ticket is $1.70 (£1.30; €1.50), valid 100 minutes, and a ROMA 24H ticket is $9.50 (£7.10; €8.50). This plan is on foot apart from two rides, so singles are enough.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • Pizza bianca at Antico Forno Roscioli on Via dei Chiavari, sold by weight at the counter.
  • Cacio e pepe, pasta with pecorino and black pepper, at a Trastevere trattoria.
  • Carbonara, the other Roman pasta, made with guanciale and egg.
  • Supplì, fried rice balls with mozzarella, as a snack between stops.
  • A cornetto and a cappuccino standing at a bar near the Spanish Steps on Saturday morning.
  • Gelato on the walk from Navona to the river.

Book a Trastevere table for a Friday night; the lanes fill fast. See the best food cities for 24 hours for more trips built around eating.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the Colosseum and Forum slot, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, and drop Trastevere. Book the earliest Colosseum entry, eat near Campo de' Fiori, walk the Pantheon and Navona, and finish at the Trevi Fountain before taking the metro back to Termini. Our guide to planning a 24-hour trip explains how we cut a route down.

What 24 hours costs

Per person, two adults sharing a January room:

  • Hotel, half a $111 (£83) double: $56 (£42)
  • Tourist tax, one night at a 3-star: $6.70 (£5; €6)
  • Leonardo Express both ways: $31 (£24; €28)
  • Two metro singles: $3.40 (£2.50; €3)
  • Colosseum, Forum and Palatine: $20 (£15.10; €18)
  • Pantheon: $7.90 (£5.90; €7)

That is about $125 (£94) before food and drink, or about $171 (£128) with a June room. Add $2.20 (£1.70; €2) if you visit the Trevi basin during fee hours.

Getting there from the US and the UK

Every US hub we track has a scheduled nonstop to Fiumicino, some only in summer: New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. From the UK there are flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh to Fiumicino, and Ryanair also flies from Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh to Ciampino. There is no practical train from London for one night.

US and UK passport holders need no visa for a short stay in Italy. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been running at all Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026, so expect fingerprints and a photo on your first entry. ETIAS is not yet running; the EU will give several months' notice, and the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20). See our entry and transit rules guide.

When to go

Spring and fall are the best months for a day on foot among the ruins. Summer is hot and crowded, and our June hotel price was close to double the January one. Winter is quieter, but the Colosseum park closes at 4:30 p.m., which is why this plan starts there. For the region as a whole, see the best European cities for 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough in Rome?

For the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, yes, if you book the Colosseum ahead. It is not enough to add the Vatican Museums and St Peter's; plan a second day for those.

Do you have to pay to see the Trevi Fountain?

Only to enter the basin area right in front of it. Since February 2, 2026 that costs $2.20 (£1.70; €2), daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Rome residents and under-5s are exempt. You can still see the fountain from the piazza.

How much is the Colosseum ticket in 2026?

The standard 24-hour ticket for the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine is $20 (£15.10; €18). You book a fixed entry time for the Colosseum. Under-18s enter free.

How much is the Pantheon ticket?

Since July 1, 2026 the full ticket is $7.90 (£5.90; €7). Visitors aged 18 to 25 pay $2.20 (£1.70; €2), and under-18s go free. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

How do I get from Fiumicino airport to central Rome?

Take the Leonardo Express to Termini: 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, $15.70 (£11.80; €14). A white licensed taxi has a fixed fare of $62 (£46; €55) to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls.
