Seoul Incheon Layover
Incheon sits on an island west of Seoul, and that distance shapes every layover here. The nonstop AREX Express takes 43 minutes from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station and 51 from Terminal 2. In exchange, the airport runs one of the best free transit tour programs in Asia, with buses to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Hongdae and the markets of Incheon.
This page is about the airport and the clock. If you are staying a night in the city, use our 24 hours in Seoul plan instead.

Can you leave the airport? Visas and K-ETA
Yes. US and UK passport holders can enter South Korea visa-free for up to 90 days; the UK Foreign Office adds that you need an onward or return ticket.
The catch is K-ETA, Korea's online travel authorization, which costs $7.50 (£5.60; ₩10,000) and can take up to 72 hours to approve. Korea's Ministry of Justice extended its temporary K-ETA exemption to December 31, 2026, and both the US State Department and the UK Foreign Office confirm their nationals are covered. The State Department says US travelers will need a K-ETA again from January 1, 2027. If you fly after that date, apply on the official k-eta.go.kr site only, at least three days ahead; the UK Foreign Office warns that other sites are generally scams.
The K-ETA site lists transit passengers among those exempt, but Incheon's transit tour page is explicit: if your nationality is not on the temporary exemption list, you need a K-ETA to join a tour. Our transit visa guide tracks the change.
How long a layover do you need?
Start from your departure. The AREX city airport terminal at Seoul Station closes check-in 3 hours before departures from Terminal 1 and 3 hours 20 minutes before Terminal 2, which is a fair guide to how early Incheon expects you back. Incheon itself asks you to reach the gate 30 to 40 minutes before boarding, and the shuttle train to the Concourse gates runs one way only.
Then add the ride: 43 to 51 minutes each way on the Express, which runs about every 35 minutes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. after AREX added four daily trains on October 23, 2026. With an hour to land and clear immigration, two and a half hours back at the airport and nearly two hours of riding and waiting for trains, an 8-hour layover leaves about two hours in central Seoul.
The tours shorten the math, because the bus leaves from the arrivals hall and the timetable is built around flights. Register at the desk at least 30 minutes before departure.
Getting into Seoul and back
AREX Express. Nonstop between Seoul Station and Incheon, 43 minutes from T1 and 51 from T2, with reserved seats. AREX lists the adult fare at $9.80 (£7.30; ₩13,000), against a normal fare of $13.90 (£10.40; ₩18,500). Buy the ticket before boarding at the Express counter on the B1 transportation center level.
All-stop train. Cheaper and slower: Incheon's own route map shows 66 minutes from T2 to Seoul Station, with stops at Gimpo Airport, Hongik University (Hongdae) and Gongdeok on the way.
Taxi. Regular taxis start at $3.60 (£2.70; ₩4,800) on the meter, with a 20% to 40% night surcharge from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.; the airport publishes no fixed fare to Seoul. Use only the marked taxi stands: Incheon warns of illegal call vans posing as taxis.
One more 2026 note: AREX's union began a work-to-rule action on October 12, 2026, and AREX warned that some all-stop trains may run late. Leave extra time.
What to do with 6 hours
Do not ride to Seoul on your own. Instead, check the tour timetable: the 3-hour Sinpo Market tour runs daily from 3 to 6 p.m. and is free, with Sinpo's spicy fried chicken as the reason to go. The 4-hour Hongdae tour runs 2 to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
If nothing fits, stay airside. The free K-Culture Zone in the Terminal 1 east transit lounge on Level 4 offers hanbok try-ons and Hangul craft sessions of about 30 minutes, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
What to do with 12 hours
Twelve hours is the sweet spot. The 5-hour Royal Heritage and Charm tour runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday, to Gyeongbokgung Palace and Insadong; the palace entry is $3 (£2.20). On Tuesdays, when Gyeongbokgung is closed, the tour visits Changdeokgung instead. Other 4- and 5-hour tours go to the DMZ viewpoints at Odusan and Aegibong or ride the ferry to Wolmi Park.
On your own, ride the Express to Seoul Station and take the subway north to Gyeongbokgung, then walk east to Insadong's teahouses and Bukchon's lanes. Eat at Gwangjang Market, a short subway ride further east, before heading back to Seoul Station.
What to do with 24 hours
Note that the transit tours are only for layovers of 24 hours or less. With a full day, book a hotel in Myeongdong, Jongno or Insadong and follow our 24-hour Seoul plan.
For 24 to 72 hours, Incheon sells K-Stopover packages that bundle one hotel night with the train or a limousine bus, a Korea Tour Card for transit and a free lounge pass. Compare Seoul with Tokyo and Taipei in our best stopover cities ranking.
Free tours and stopover deals
Incheon Airport Transit Tour. Open to transit passengers whose layover is 24 hours or less, who can enter Korea visa-free (with a K-ETA if their nationality needs one). Book online or register on arrival, first come first served, at the Level 1 desks after immigration: T1 desks 19 and 20 near Exits 1 and 2, T2 desks 5 and 6 opposite Exit 4. Bring your passport and your onward boarding pass, and arrive 30 minutes before the tour. If you miss the bus back, getting to the airport is your responsibility.
K-Stopover. Sold by the airport, not an airline, for stays of 24 to 72 hours. Packages include one hotel night for two, with hotels in Seoul, Incheon and beyond, and refunds fall from 100% seven days out to nothing on the day. We found no Korean Air or Asiana free-hotel stopover to verify; see our stopover programs guide for airlines that offer one.
Staying airside: hotel, nap zones and luggage
Terminal 2 has the airside options: a Transit Hotel on Level 4 opposite Gate 252, open 24 hours, free nap zones near Gates 231 and 268, and paid showers from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Darakhyu capsule hotel is in the T2 transportation center, which is landside. Incheon's pages list no prices for any of these; book or ask directly.
Luggage. Hanjin parcel counters on Level 3 landside store bags: in T1 opposite check-in row B, in T2 opposite row H. Hanjin also runs T-Luggage, a same-day bag transfer between the airport and Seoul Station, Hongik University and Myeongdong subway stations. The airport does not publish storage rates.

Where Seoul Incheon ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Seoul: Gyeongbok Palace, Hanok Village, and Gwangjang Tour
Book the half-day option to keep it near 4 hours; the full day adds the War Memorial and Jogye Temple and runs past 8 hours. Entrance fees and transport are included; food, hanbok rental and lunch are not. Gyeongbokgung closes on Tuesdays, which is why the Tuesday option swaps in N Seoul Tower (observatory not included).

Seoul: NANTA Show Ticket
The official site lists Myeongdong seats at KRW 50,000 to 70,000 (about $38 to $53) and promotes Hongdae from KRW 32,000 (about $24), so the $32 here is cheaper than a full-price A seat but not always the cheapest. Weekday shows are at 5pm and 8pm. The two theatres are different venues and a ticket for the wrong one cannot be changed or refunded.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a K-ETA for a layover in Seoul?
Not until December 31, 2026, if you hold a US or UK passport: both are on Korea's temporary exemption list. The US State Department says US travelers need a K-ETA again from January 1, 2027. It costs $7.50 (£5.60; ₩10,000) on the official k-eta.go.kr site and can take up to 72 hours.
Is the Incheon transit tour free?
Most courses are free. A few charge an entry fee, such as $3 (£2.20) for Gyeongbokgung Palace on the 5-hour palace tour. You must be a transit passenger with a layover of 24 hours or less and be able to enter Korea.
Is 8 hours enough to leave Incheon airport?
Just. The Express takes 43 to 51 minutes each way, Seoul Station's city check-in closes 3 hours before T1 departures, and immigration takes time on arrival. Eight hours leaves about two hours in central Seoul. A free airport tour makes better use of a short window.
How much is the train from Incheon airport to Seoul?
AREX lists the nonstop Express at $9.80 (£7.30; ₩13,000) for adults, 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 from Terminal 2. The slower all-stop train takes about 66 minutes from Terminal 2.
Is there a transit hotel at Incheon airport?
Yes. A Transit Hotel operates 24 hours on Level 4 of Terminal 2, opposite Gate 252, inside the transit area. Free nap zones nearby are an option if you only need a few hours of rest.
