24 Hours in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a city you can cover fast. The Airport Express runs from the terminal to Hong Kong station in Central in 24 minutes, every ten minutes or so from 5:54 a.m. to 12:48 a.m., and from there the old streets of Sheung Wan, the Star Ferry pier and the Peak Tram terminus are all within walking distance. Across the harbour, Tsim Sha Tsui and Jordan give you the skyline view and the night market.
The plan below keeps to those two sides of Victoria Harbour. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel in Central, Wan Chai or Tsim Sha Tsui with a guest score of 8 or more was $69 (£52) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, taxes in, and $88 (£66) for June 11, 2027. If you are only between flights, our Hong Kong layover guide deals with the airport and the transit rules; this page is about a night in town.

The 24-hour plan
- 9:30 a.m.
Man Mo Temple, Hollywood Road
Start in Sheung Wan at the incense-filled temple to the gods of literature and war, then walk east along Hollywood Road's antique and gallery shops.
- 10:30 a.m.
Tai Kwun
The restored Central Police Station compound, now galleries, courtyards and cafes. Free to walk around.
- 11:30 a.m.
Graham Street and the Mid-Levels Escalator
Ride the outdoor escalator a few sections up, then walk down Graham Street's market stalls for a cha chaan teng lunch in the lanes of Central.
- 1:30 p.m.
Star Ferry, Central to Tsim Sha Tsui
From Central Pier, the short harbour crossing on the green-and-white ferries, paid by Octopus card at the gate.
- 2:30 p.m.
Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront and Avenue of Stars
Walk the Kowloon promenade for the full Hong Kong Island skyline, then head back across by MTR to Central.
- 7:00 p.m.
Peak Tram and Sky Terrace 428
The night combo, after 7 p.m., covers the funicular up and back plus one visit to the Sky Terrace 428 viewing deck. It is sold on the Peak Tram webstore.
- 9:30 p.m.
Temple Street Night Market
MTR to Jordan for a late dinner at the dai pai dong tables and seafood stalls along Temple Street.
- 8:30 a.m.
Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market
Next morning, the old wholesale fruit market a few blocks from Temple Street, then the Airport Express from Kowloon station.
The route is 6.9 miles (11.1 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
No stop on the route has a weekly closing day; the Peak Tram and Temple Street run daily, and we could not confirm Tai Kwun's opening hours
How the 24 hours work
Do the island in the morning, Kowloon in the afternoon, and save the Peak for dark. Start at Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road, walk east to Tai Kwun, the old Central Police Station compound, and ride the Mid-Levels Escalator a few sections before dropping down through Graham Street for lunch. Then take the Star Ferry from Central Pier to Tsim Sha Tsui and walk the waterfront to the Avenue of Stars.
The one ticket to sort is the Peak Tram. Its webstore sells a night combo, after 7 p.m., that covers the tram up and back and one entry to the Sky Terrace 428 viewing deck for $19.70 (£14.80; HK$155); a plain tram ticket starts at $10.40 (£7.80; HK$82). Go up after dark, come down, and take the MTR to Jordan for a late dinner at Temple Street Night Market.
None of the stops has a weekly closing day, which makes Hong Kong forgiving. Weather is the variable. If the cloud is down on the Peak, skip the tram and see the skyline from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade instead; if a typhoon signal is raised, ferries and outdoor sights can stop, so check the Hong Kong Observatory on the day.
Where to stay for one night
Stay near an MTR station on either side of the harbour. We priced one Friday night on Kayak for two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, all taxes and fees included, filtering to Central, Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui:
- January 15, 2027: $69 (£52) at China Rich Hotel, a 3-star rated 8.1 in Wan Chai. The next cheapest, a 4-star in Wan Chai, was $102 (£76).
- June 11, 2027: $88 (£66) at Hotel Hart, a 3-star rated 8.2 in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Central is the most convenient for the Airport Express and the morning half of the plan, and usually the most expensive. Wan Chai is a short tram or MTR ride east with more mid-priced rooms. Tsim Sha Tsui puts you on the Kowloon side, close to the Star Ferry, the waterfront and Temple Street, and near Kowloon station for the train out.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The Airport Authority lists the Airport Express to Hong Kong station at 24 minutes, with trains about every ten minutes. The adult single is $16.60 (£12.40; HK$130) on a smart ticket or $15.30 (£11.50; HK$120) by Octopus card; to Kowloon station it is $14.70 (£11; HK$115) single. Hong Kong and Kowloon stations both offer in-town check-in for the trip home. The MTR's own website was down for maintenance when we checked, so these figures come from the airport's page.
Taxis are color coded, and red urban taxis go everywhere you need. The airport's approximate fares are $48 (£36; HK$375) to Central or Admiralty, $47 (£35; HK$370) to Wan Chai or Causeway Bay and $37 (£28; HK$290) to Tsim Sha Tsui. The taxi stand is to the left outside the Arrivals Hall.
If you come in by high-speed train from the mainland, Hong Kong West Kowloon station is close to Jordan and Temple Street.
What to eat in 24 hours
- A cha chaan teng lunch around Graham Street: milk tea, macaroni soup, pineapple buns and French toast in the old-style cafes below the Mid-Levels Escalator.
- Dim sum: any morning, anywhere. If your hotel breakfast is poor, a dim sum house is the better choice.
- Dai pai dong dinner on Temple Street: claypot rice, seafood and stir-fries at plastic tables set out along the night market.
- Egg tarts and egg waffles: sold from bakery counters and street hatches across Kowloon.
- Fruit at Yau Ma Tei: the old wholesale fruit market is a short walk from Temple Street and busiest early in the morning.
We have not printed food prices: none of these places publishes a list we could check.
If you only have 12 hours
Take the Airport Express to Central, ride the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui and back, go up the Peak after 7 p.m., and eat on Temple Street. That keeps the three things Hong Kong is famous for and leaves the morning streets of Sheung Wan for next time. The return ride is 24 minutes, and in-town check-in at Hong Kong or Kowloon station lets you drop your bag before the evening if your airline offers it. See our layover page before you leave the airport on a connection.
What 24 hours costs
For one traveler paying the whole room, on the January date:
- Hotel, Wan Chai: $69 (£52) ($88 (£66) in June, Tsim Sha Tsui)
- Airport Express in to Hong Kong station and back from Kowloon station: $31 (£23; HK$245)
- Peak Tram night combo with Sky Terrace 428: $19.70 (£14.80; HK$155)
Total before food: about $120 (£90) in January and $139 (£104) in June. Add a few MTR, tram and Star Ferry rides on an Octopus card; we could not check those fares because the MTR site was offline. Using an Octopus card on the Airport Express both ways saves a little.
Getting there from the US and the UK
Cathay Pacific flies nonstop to Hong Kong from New York JFK, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Dallas/Fort Worth; United also flies from San Francisco and Los Angeles, and Delta from Los Angeles. There are no nonstops from Newark, Washington Dulles, Atlanta or Miami. From the UK, Cathay Pacific and British Airways fly from Heathrow, and Cathay Pacific from Manchester.
Entry rules. US citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days with a passport valid at least one month beyond the stay, according to the State Department. Holders of a full British citizen passport can visit without a visa for up to six months; GOV.UK notes that BN(O) passports are no longer accepted for immigration clearance. Neither nationality needs an online pre-registration. Our transit visa guide covers onward connections, including to the mainland, which has separate rules.
When to go
Autumn and early winter are the clearest months for the Peak and the harbour views. Summer is hot and humid with typhoon season, which can close outdoor sights and stop ferries for a day. Spring can be foggy, which hides the skyline from the Peak. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures. For comparison, see 24 hours in Singapore, 24 hours in Tokyo and our best stopover cities ranking.

Where Hong Kong ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Hong Kong: Victoria Harbour Evening Cruise with Drinks
Only the 7:40pm sailing includes the Symphony of Lights, which is free to watch from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade anyway, and one recent review says the show was cancelled on their night. The US-dollar page would not load for us; the UK page showed from GBP 11 (the US listing card showed about $12).
Rating as shown on GetYourGuide

Hong Kong: 7-Course Hong Kong Street & Restaurant Food Tour
Meet at Sheung Wan MTR Exit E2 (follow the platform signs, because Exit E cannot be reached from the A to D concourse); it ends at Central Market. It cannot handle dietary restrictions and is not suitable for vegetarians or halal diets.

Hong Kong: Alternative Hong Kong Caged Home Walking Tour
Meet inside Prince Edward MTR at Exit D. The herbal-tea stop at Lui Seng Chun was marked closed until April 2026 on the page, so expect it to be skipped or swapped. A short, sober counterweight to the skyline; pair it with the harbour at night.
