24 Hours in York

London to York: 1 h 45 min One night from $62 (£46) Whole plan inside the walls

York is the easiest one-night trip in the UK if you come by train. LNER's fastest service from London King's Cross takes 1 hour 45 minutes, and the station sits just outside the city walls. From there every stop in this plan is a walk: the medieval wall-walk, York Minster, The Shambles, the Viking centre on Coppergate and the river.

It is also cheap. A 3-star room inside the walls on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $62 (£46). Paid entries in the plan, the Minster, Jorvik and the ghost walk, total $63 (£48). The catch is the airport: Leeds Bradford has no train station and no flights from the US or London.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 10:00 a.m.

    York Minster

Start with the cathedral's Great East Window and chapter house. Sightseeing runs 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday but only 12:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. The tower climb is extra: $35 (£26) for both.

    $27 (£20)
  2. 11:45 a.m.

City walls, Bootham Bar to Monk Bar

Climb the steps at Bootham Bar, a few yards from the Minster, and walk the free medieval wall-walk round to Monk Bar for the best views of the Minster's east end.

    Free
  3. 12:30 p.m.

Lunch at Shambles Market and The Shambles

York's open-air market on Silver Street has a street-food court, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Walk the overhanging timber lane of The Shambles next door on the way out.

    Free
  4. 1:45 p.m.

    Jorvik Viking Centre

Ride through a rebuilt Viking-age street on Coppergate, on the spot where it was excavated. The centre says pre-booking a timeslot is essential; the advance adult ticket is cheaper than the standard $25 (£18.50).

    $23 (£17.50) Book ahead
  5. 3:30 p.m.

Tea at Bettys, St Helen's Square

York's Art Deco tea room at 6-8 St Helen's Square, open until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Expect a queue at the door in the afternoon; a Fat Rascal scone is the order.

    Free
  6. 8:00 p.m.

The Original Ghost Walk of York

Every night at 8 p.m. from outside the King's Arms pub on King's Staith (from Ouse Bridge if the river floods). It lasts 75 to 90 minutes; book online or pay cash on the night.

    $13.30 (£10)
  7. 10:00 a.m.

    National Railway Museum (Saturday)

Free, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and next to York station, so it is the last stop before your train. Booking online is recommended at busy times; Station Hall is card-only.

    Free

The route is 1.9 miles (3.1 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

York Minster sightseeing only 12:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays; York Christmas Market closed Tuesdays; National Railway Museum and Jorvik open daily (Jorvik timeslots must be pre-booked)

How the 24 hours work

Do the Minster first. Sightseeing runs 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and only 12:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays, so a Sunday arrival breaks the plan. From the Minster you climb the walls at Bootham Bar and walk round to Monk Bar, then drop down to The Shambles and the market for lunch.

Jorvik is the one stop you must book. The centre says pre-booking a timeslot is essential, so reserve one for early afternoon before you travel. Afterward, tea at Bettys fills the late afternoon; on Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until 9 p.m., so the queue is shorter later. The evening is the ghost walk from the King's Arms at 8 p.m., and Saturday morning is the free National Railway Museum beside the station.

If it rains, swap the open-air wall-walk for longer in the Minster's undercroft museum and give the railway museum two hours on Saturday.

Where to stay for one night

We priced hotels inside or just outside the walls on Kayak, for two adults on a Friday, 3 stars or better, guest rating 8 or more, with taxes and fees, and checked each address:

  • Piccadilly, inside the walls: Travelodge York Central was the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027, at $62 (£46), a short walk from Jorvik.
  • By the Foss, Layerthorpe: Moxy York was the cheapest qualifying hotel on June 11, 2027, at $165 (£124). An inn outside Walmgate Bar listed lower, at $151 (£113).
  • By Bootham Bar: the Minster Hotel was $95 (£71) in January and $201 (£151) in June, the closest pick to the cathedral.

Every price above is the whole room for two, with taxes and fees included.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

Most visitors arrive by train, at York station just outside the walls, and walk in over Lendal Bridge. If you fly, the nearest airport is Leeds Bradford, which has no rail link. Take the Flyer A1 bus to Leeds Bus Station, $3.30 (£2.50) under West Yorkshire's single-fare cap, walk about 0.6 miles (1 km) to Leeds station, and take a direct train to York. The fastest trains take 22 minutes. One Friday connection, the 11:20 a.m. bus and the 12:30 p.m. train, gets you in at 12:57 p.m., 97 minutes in all, for $18.30 (£13.70).

From the US, Manchester Airport is the realistic gateway: National Rail shows a direct train to York in 1 hour 52 minutes, from $41 (£31). The airport's taxi partner, Arrow Cars, quotes fares at booking and publishes no standard figure.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • Street food at Shambles Market, Silver Street, where the food court is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
  • A Fat Rascal at Bettys, 6-8 St Helen's Square, the fruit scone the tea room is known for, or a full afternoon tea.
  • A pint at the King's Arms on King's Staith before the ghost walk; the pub floods often enough that the walk has a backup meeting point.
  • Christmas market stalls on Parliament Street, November 12 to December 21, 2026, if your night falls in season.

Bettys did not publish menu prices on its York page when we checked, so we do not quote them. For cities where eating is the point, see the best food cities for 24 hours.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the Minster, the walls, The Shambles and Jorvik. Drop Bettys if the queue is long, and the ghost walk if you are catching an evening train. Everything sits a short walk from the station, so a day trip from London on the 9:30 a.m. weekend train works.

Coming by train from London instead, swap the airport row for your rail fare. You will not need a bus inside the walls; if you do ride one, single fares in England outside London are capped at $4 (£3) until March 2027.

Getting there from the US and the UK

No US airport flies nonstop to Leeds Bradford, and neither do London or Edinburgh. From the US, fly to Manchester and take the direct train, or to London and take LNER north; 24 hours in London pairs well with this. US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20) on GOV.UK.

From London, LNER's fastest King's Cross to York service takes 1 hour 45 minutes, and the line carries on to Edinburgh. See the best one-night breaks from London and the best city breaks by train. From Manchester, the direct train makes York an easy add-on to 24 hours in Manchester.

One change to watch: Leeds Bradford's Wikipedia route table shows easyJet's routes there ending on January 5, 2027.

When to go

Winter is the bargain: our January room cost well under half the June price. Days are short, so walk the walls before lunch. Summer is busier and dearer. The York Christmas Market runs from November 12 to December 21, 2026 on Parliament Street, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed on Tuesdays; see our Christmas list and the best breaks for families.
