Amsterdam Layover
Schiphol sits about 11 km (7 miles) southwest of central Amsterdam, and its railway station is directly under Schiphol Plaza, the arrivals hall. NS says the train to Amsterdam Centraal takes just over 17 minutes, with 142 trains a day, and e-tickets start at $6.20 (£4.60; €5.50). Step out of Centraal and you are on the canal ring. Few hubs make a short layover this easy.
The limits are the border and the return. Since April 10, 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System records your fingerprints and photo at first entry, and KLM asks you to be back 3 hours before an intercontinental flight. This page builds the minimum layover from those pieces and gives you a 6-, 12- and 24-hour plan. For the full priced city plan, see our 24 hours in Amsterdam page.

KLM advises being at Schiphol 3 hours before intercontinental flights and 2 hours before European flights (busy-period notice, October 2026)
Can you leave Schiphol on a layover?
Yes, on a US or UK passport. The Netherlands is in the Schengen area: up to 90 days without a visa. The UK government counts it as 90 days in any 180 and wants your passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid 3 months after you leave. The US State Department asks for 3 months' validity beyond your departure date and 2 blank pages.
ETIAS is not required yet. The EU's ETIAS site says it is not in operation and collects no applications; the start date will be announced months ahead, and it will cost $22 (£16.80; €20). EES is live: the European Commission says it has been fully operational since April 10, 2026. Your first entry means fingerprints and a photo, with no fee, and GOV.UK warns of longer waits at the border and extra time at exit.
If you connect between two non-Schengen flights, say New York to Dubai, you can stay airside without passport control. If you fly from the US to another Schengen city via Amsterdam, you clear EES at Schiphol anyway.
How long a layover do you need at Schiphol?
Build it from the fixed pieces. Passport control first, slower if it is your first EES registration. Then the train: 17 minutes each way. Then the return: KLM advises being at the airport 3 hours before an intercontinental flight and 2 hours before a European one.
- Under 5 hours: stay airside. The border twice and the 3-hour buffer leave too little.
- 6 hours: about two hours in town on a long-haul onward flight, more if you fly on within Europe. Enough for a canal walk.
- 10 to 12 hours: a museum, a meal and the Jordaan.
- Overnight: sleep in town, or at YOTELAIR inside Lounge 2 without leaving the airside zone.
Check your bag through to your final destination. If you cannot, the storage desk in Arrivals is open 24 hours.
Getting into Amsterdam from Schiphol
Train (fastest): NS trains leave from the station under Schiphol Plaza for Amsterdam Centraal in just over 17 minutes. The cheapest e-ticket is $6.20 (£4.60; €5.50); NS notes that buying an e-ticket avoids the $1.80 (£1.30; €1.60) surcharge on a single ticket. Not every train from Schiphol runs to Centraal, so check the departure board before you board.
Taxi: use only the official stand in front of Schiphol Plaza. Schiphol says official taxis run on a meter, take contactless cards, cannot refuse a ride and must give a printed receipt, and it warns against taxis offered to you without asking. Its page gives no fare estimate, so we publish none; on a layover, the train is faster.
Six hours: Centraal, the canals and Dam Square
With about two hours in town, walk. From Amsterdam Centraal, follow the Damrak south to Dam Square and the Royal Palace, then turn west across the Singel, Herengracht and Keizersgracht into the Nine Streets, the small shopping lanes between the canals. Loop back along the Prinsengracht past the Westerkerk, whose tower you can see from most of the route.
This walk needs no ticket and no booking, so a delayed arrival costs you nothing. Turn back to Centraal with time for the 17-minute train and KLM's buffer.
Twelve hours: add the Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House
With 10 to 12 hours, add one museum. The Rijksmuseum opens daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and adult tickets cost $28 (£21; €25); trams run there from Centraal, or you can walk through the canal ring. The Anne Frank House is the harder ticket: it sells only online, for a timed slot, no tickets at the door. Tickets are released every Tuesday at 10 a.m. CEST for visits six weeks later, at $18.50 (£13.90; €16.50) for adults including the booking fee. If your layover is booked weeks ahead, book this the Tuesday it opens.
After the museum, walk through the Jordaan, the old working district west of the Prinsengracht, for lunch and a slower look at the canals. A canal-boat tour from the quays near Centraal is the easy way to see the city from the water before the train back.
Twenty-four hours: sleep in the city
With a full day, sleep in central Amsterdam, spend the evening along the canals, and take a museum in the morning. Our Amsterdam plan has the timed route, hotel prices and the tourist tax. If your onward flight is very early, sleep airside at YOTELAIR instead and skip the morning train.
For other European hubs where a long connection pays off, see the best European cities for a 24-hour layover, or compare Frankfurt, where the train is just as fast.
Is there a KLM stopover program or transit tour?
Not one we could find. On October 21, 2026, we found no current KLM stopover offer for Amsterdam, and Schiphol lists no free hotel night or free city tour for transit passengers. If you want a few days in Amsterdam on the way, price a multi-city ticket on KLM and compare. Air France, KLM's sister airline, did launch a Paris Stopover in July 2026 for connections of 27 hours or more; see our Paris CDG layover page and the guide to free stopover programs.
Staying airside: YOTELAIR and lockers
YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol is inside Lounge 2, past passport control and security, with cabins by the hour or overnight. Only hand luggage is allowed. Departing guests need a boarding pass dated within 24 hours of the stay; connecting passengers already airside with no bags to collect can walk straight in and stay more than 24 hours. Gate M is the one area not reachable from the hotel. YOTEL publishes no fixed rate on the page.
For a few hours without a bed, airside lockers in Lounge 1, Lounge 2 and on Holland Boulevard let you drop your carry-on and walk the shops and cafés hands-free.
Left luggage at Schiphol
Schiphol has two options. The luggage storage desk is in Arrivals, level -1, between Arrivals 1 and 2, open 24 hours a day. Per item per day, hand baggage costs $7.90 (£5.90; €7) and hold baggage $10.70 (£8; €9.50), for up to 30 days.
Airside, luggage lockers measuring 40 by 40 cm and 70 cm deep cost $9.50 (£7.10; €8.50) per locker, open 24/7, for up to 7 days. Use the desk if you are leaving for the city with a separate-ticket bag; use a locker if you are staying airside with a heavy carry-on.
