Paris CDG Layover

RER B to Paris: 35 to 50 minutes Airport ticket $15.70 (£11.80) Worth it from about 8 hours

Charles de Gaulle sits about 25 km (16 miles) northeast of Paris, and the RER B train runs from two stations inside the airport to Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les Halles and Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame. The Paris tourist office puts the ride at 35 to 50 minutes, and since January 1, 2026 one airport ticket costs $15.70 (£11.80; €14). That makes a long CDG layover one of the best in Europe.

Three things changed in 2026. The RoissyBus to Opéra stopped running on March 1. CDG is renaming its terminals with single numbers, with new signs going up between September and December 2026. And Air France launched a Paris Stopover option in July. This page covers the border, the hours you need and what fits in 6, 12 or 24 hours; for the full priced city plan, see our 24 hours in Paris page.

  2. Ride into town (fastest public option)35 min
  3. Your time in town (our minimum)2 h 00 min
  4. Ride back to the airport35 min
  5. Back before departure (airline or airport advice, never under 2 hours)2 h 00 min

Minimum layover to leave the airport: 6.0 hours (5 h 55 min, rounded up). Add an hour if you check a bag through security again or connect between terminals.

Air France's check-in and bag-drop deadline at CDG 2 is 60 minutes before departure for the US and most long-haul destinations and 40 minutes for the UK, Ireland and Schengen Europe; we could not load its recommended arrival time, and GOV.UK warns that EES exit checks add time

Can you leave CDG on a layover?

Yes, on a US or UK passport. France is in the Schengen area: up to 90 days without a visa. The UK government counts it as 90 days in any 180 and wants your passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid 3 months after you leave. The US State Department asks for 3 months' validity beyond your departure from Schengen and 1 blank page, and rates France Level 2, exercise increased caution.

ETIAS is not required yet. The EU's official ETIAS site says the system is not in operation and no applications are collected; the start date will be announced several months ahead, and the fee will be $22 (£16.80; €20). Ignore sites selling one now.

EES is live. The European Commission says the Entry/Exit System became fully operational on April 10, 2026. At your first entry you give fingerprints and a photo, with no fee; GOV.UK says to expect longer waits at the border and to allow extra time at exit, because EES checks can happen before boarding. If you fly from the US to another Schengen city via CDG, you clear EES here even without leaving.

How long a layover do you need at CDG?

Build it from the fixed pieces. Passport control and EES on arrival, slower the first time. The RER B, 35 to 50 minutes each way, with a train every 10 to 20 minutes according to the tourist office. Then the return: Air France's check-in deadline at CDG 2 is 60 minutes before departure for the US and most long-haul flights and 40 minutes for the UK and Schengen Europe. On top of that come security and the EES exit check. We build the math below with a two-hour return buffer, which is our planning margin, not an airline rule.

  • Under 7 hours: stay airside. Two train rides, the border twice and the buffer leave about an hour in town.
  • 8 hours: about three hours in central Paris: one museum or one long walk, not both.
  • 10 to 12 hours: the Louvre, the Seine and a sit-down lunch.
  • 27 hours or more on Air France: you qualify for the Paris Stopover option.

Late arrivals take note: the tourist office says modernization works regularly interrupt RER B service on the northern section after 11 p.m. on some weeknights in 2026. Check live traffic before a late ride.

Getting into Paris from CDG

RER B (fastest public option): trains leave from Aéroport CDG 1 (Terminals 1 and 3) and Aéroport CDG 2 TGV, toward Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les Halles, Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame and Denfert-Rochereau. Trains run from the airport toward Paris from 4:50 a.m. to 11:50 p.m. The Paris Région <> Airports ticket costs $15.70 (£11.80; €14) and, according to Île-de-France Mobilités, allows connections within 2 hours of first validation, so it gets you onto the metro at Châtelet. A paper ticket is nearly gone: load it on a Navigo Easy card or the Île-de-France Mobilités app.

Taxi: Paris taxis charge fixed fares to and from CDG, unchanged for 2026: $63 (£47; €56) to the Right Bank and $73 (£55; €65) to the Left Bank, pickup included. Take one only from the official ranks at the arrivals doors; never accept a driver who approaches you inside.

Buses: the RoissyBus to Opéra ended on March 1, 2026. Its replacement, line 9517, links the airport with Saint-Denis Pleyel in about 30 minutes, where metro line 14 continues into Paris. Buses 350 and 351 cost $2.30 (£1.70; €2.05) but take 60 to 90 minutes. The CDG Express rail link is scheduled to open on March 28, 2027.

Six hours: stay at CDG and use it

With 6 hours or less, Paris costs more time than it gives. Stay airside. In Terminal 2E, the Espace Musées in Hall M shows art in the departure area, and the tourist office lists chef-run restaurants and Be Relax spas in the terminal. If you need sleep, the airside YOTELAIR above Gate L rents cabins by the hour. Families get play areas in every terminal and free strollers after security in 2E and 2F.

Eight to twelve hours: the Louvre and the Seine

Take the RER B to Châtelet-Les Halles and walk west to the Louvre. It opens 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Tuesdays. Visitors from outside the European Economic Area, which includes US and UK passports, pay $36 (£27; €32); book a timed slot before you land.

From the Louvre, walk to the Pont Neuf and onto the Île de la Cité, past Notre-Dame, and cross to the Île Saint-Louis for an ice cream at Berthillon. Lunch in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank, then pick up the RER B at Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame, which runs straight back to the airport. On a Tuesday, swap the Louvre for a longer walk along the quays.

Twenty-four hours: sleep in Paris

With a full day, sleep in the city: dinner, a night walk along the Seine and a museum in the morning. Our Paris plan has the timed route, hotel prices and the closing days that break it. For an early flight, the first trains leave Gare du Nord for the airport at 4:53 a.m. If you are weighing Paris against other hubs for a long connection, see the best European cities for a 24-hour layover.

Air France's Paris Stopover: what you get

On July 22, 2026, Air France and Extime Travel launched Paris Stopover. Customers in any cabin can choose the Stopover option when booking on the Air France website and stay 1 to 4 nights, outbound or on the return. The minimum connection is 27 hours. Extime Travel then sells packages, one for the Paris landmarks and one for Disneyland Paris, with transfers, 4- or 5-star hotels and experiences, bookable up to 48 hours before departure.

Read it carefully: the press release gives no prices and does not say the extra nights are free, so price the fare with and without the stop. There is no free transit tour at CDG. For the airline programs that do include free nights or free airfare, see our guide to free stopover programs, or compare Amsterdam Schiphol.

Staying airside: YOTELAIR, lounges and the museum

YOTELAIR Paris Charles de Gaulle is after security in Terminal 2E, near gates L41 to L53, open 24/7, with cabins by the hour or overnight. Only hand luggage is allowed. If you arrive in 2E, stay in the transit area without collecting bags; from the public side you need a boarding pass for gates K, L or M departing on your check-out date. YOTEL did not publish a rate on the page we checked.

Lounges with showers are in each boarding area, for loyalty cards or on reservation, and Air France flies mainly from 2E, 2F and 2G. One more 2026 quirk: new terminal names (single numbers, 1 to 7) are replacing codes such as 2E on signs between September and December 2026, and airlines started printing them in March, so match your boarding pass to the signs carefully.

Left luggage at CDG

CDG's left-luggage office is Bagages du Monde, in Terminal 2 at the TGV-RER station, level 4, handy because it sits on your way to the train. We could not find a published price on any page that loaded on October 21, 2026, so check at the desk. With a bag checked through to your final destination, you do not need it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for a layover in Paris?

No, on a US or UK passport. You can enter the Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days. ETIAS is not operating yet, and EES registration at the border is free but adds time the first time.

Is 6 hours enough to leave CDG?

Not really. The RER B takes 35 to 50 minutes each way, you cross passport control twice, and you need a margin for check-in, security and EES. From about 8 hours you get three hours in town.

How much is the train from CDG to Paris?

The Paris Région <> Airports ticket costs $15.70 (£11.80; €14) for the RER B, with connections allowed for 2 hours. A taxi has a fixed fare: $63 (£47; €56) to the Right Bank, $73 (£55; €65) to the Left Bank.

Is the RoissyBus still running?

No. It stopped on March 1, 2026. Line 9517 now runs to Saint-Denis Pleyel in about 30 minutes, with metro line 14 onward, but the RER B is the simpler choice on a layover.

Can I sleep at Paris CDG without going through immigration?

Yes, at YOTELAIR, which is airside in Terminal 2E near gates L41 to L53. Arriving passengers must stay in the transit area, and only hand luggage is allowed.

Does Air France offer a free stopover in Paris?

Air France launched a Paris Stopover option on July 22, 2026 for connections of 27 hours or more, 1 to 4 nights, with paid hotel packages from Extime Travel. The announcement does not say the stop is free.
