24 Hours in New York City

JFK to Penn Station: about 40 min One night from $138 (£103) Broadway seats up to 50% off

New York does not need selling. It needs editing. In 24 hours you can do one museum well, walk one park and one elevated railway, watch the sun go down from a deck, see a show and eat a pastrami sandwich at 11 p.m. You cannot add the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn and a second museum without turning the day into a commute.

This plan stays in Manhattan below 86th Street and uses the subway four or five times. The Met costs $30 (£22) for visitors from outside New York State and is closed Wednesdays. Edge at Hudson Yards starts at $42 (£31) plus a $2 (£1.50) processing fee, and its sunset slots are the only part of the day that must be booked. Everything else, from the High Line to the Brooklyn Bridge, is free.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 10:00 a.m.

    Bethesda Terrace, Central Park

Walk into Central Park from Fifth Avenue and down the Mall to the fountain and the lake. It is free, and mid-morning is quiet before the crowds.

    Free
  2. 10:45 a.m.

    The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Ten minutes up Fifth Avenue. Pick two wings, such as the Temple of Dendur and the European paintings, and leave by 1 p.m. Open from 10 a.m., closed Wednesdays, no timed ticket needed.

    $30 (£22)
  3. 1:30 p.m.

    Lunch at Chelsea Market

One subway ride downtown to 14th Street. The concourse at 75 Ninth Avenue is a food hall: Lobster Place for seafood, Miznon for pita, L'Arte del Gelato for dessert.

    Free
  4. 2:45 p.m.

    The High Line

Climb up near the market and walk the elevated park north to Hudson Yards. Free, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. from April to November and to 8 p.m. in winter.

    Free
  5. 4:30 p.m.

    Edge observation deck, Hudson Yards

The High Line ends at the foot of 30 Hudson Yards. Edge sells timed entry, and the slots around sunset go first, so book days ahead.

    $42 (£31) Book ahead
  6. 7:00 p.m.

A Broadway show via TKTS, Duffy Square

Walk east to Times Square. The TKTS booth at Broadway and 47th Street sells same-day seats at up to 50% off, Fridays 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., for an 8 p.m. curtain.

    Free
  7. 11:00 p.m.

    Pastrami at Katz's Delicatessen

One subway ride to the Lower East Side. Katz's stays open from Friday 8 a.m. through the weekend, so a late pastrami sandwich after the show works.

    Free
  8. 8:30 a.m.

    Brooklyn Bridge walk (Saturday)

Saturday morning, walk the promenade from City Hall toward Brooklyn and back before the crowds. Free. Then head for the airport.

    Free

The route is 9.4 miles (15.2 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

The Met is closed Wednesdays (and Thanksgiving, December 25, January 1); the TKTS Times Square booth opens only at 3 p.m. on Fridays; the High Line closes at 8 p.m. from December to March

How the 24 hours work

The route runs north to south. You start uptown while museums are quiet, drift down the West Side in the afternoon and end on the Lower East Side after dark. Saturday morning is the Brooklyn Bridge, then the airport.

Book one thing ahead: an Edge ticket for the half hour before sunset. Edge sells reserved, timed entry and calls general admission its most-booked ticket. The Met needs no timed ticket; its own page says advance tickets are not required, and it stays open until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Broadway is bought on the day at the TKTS booth in Duffy Square, which opens at 3 p.m. on Fridays and 11 a.m. on Saturdays and sells seats at up to 50% off.

If it rains, swap the order: do the Met longer, skip Bethesda Terrace, and ride the subway to Chelsea Market, which is indoors. If your day is a Wednesday, the Met is shut; take our planning rule of one anchor sight and swap in a museum that opens that day. The High Line closes at 8 p.m. from December 1 to March 31, so in winter walk it before dark.

Where to stay for one night

Stay below Central Park so the evening walk home is short. On Expedia, for two adults on a Friday with taxes and fees included, 3 stars or better and guest ratings of 8 or more, we found:

  • Financial District: the cheapest January room was the DoubleTree by Hilton New York Downtown at $138 (£103) on January 15, 2027. Wall Street empties at night, but the Brooklyn Bridge is a 10-minute walk for Saturday.
  • Midtown: Pod 51 was $146 (£109) in January. In June, Midtown held the cheapest qualifying room, Hotel 32 32 at $307 (£230) on June 11, 2027.
  • Chelsea: Cambria Hotel New York Chelsea was $171 (£128) in January and puts you next to the High Line.

June costs more than double January. If summer is the only option, compare against a night in Philadelphia, 69 minutes away by Acela.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

From JFK, take AirTrain to Jamaica and change to the Long Island Rail Road. The Port Authority puts the LIRR leg at about 20 minutes to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison; allow about 40 minutes from the terminal. AirTrain costs $8.75 (£6.60) and an off-peak CityTicket $5.25 (£3.90), so $14 (£10.50) in all. At weekday rush hour the CityTicket is $7.25 (£5.40). The cheaper option is AirTrain plus the E subway from Jamaica for a $3 (£2.20) fare, which is slower.

A yellow taxi from JFK to Manhattan is a flat $70 (£52). Add the $2 (£1.50) airport access fee, the $2.50 (£1.90) state congestion surcharge, the $1 (£0.70) improvement surcharge, 50 cents of MTA tax and, since congestion pricing began, a 75-cent toll south of 60th Street. That is about $77 (£58) before tolls and tip, and $5 (£3.70) more from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays.

From Boston, Philadelphia or Washington, Amtrak arrives at Moynihan Train Hall across from Penn Station, already in Midtown.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • Pastrami at Katz's Delicatessen, 205 East Houston Street. The sandwich is $29 (£22) on Katz's own site, and it is big enough for two. Katz's opens Friday at 8 a.m. and does not close until Sunday night.
  • Chelsea Market, 75 Ninth Avenue, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.: Lobster Place for seafood, Miznon for stuffed pita, Mokbar for ramen, L'Arte del Gelato for dessert.
  • A slice at the counter. Pizza by the slice is the city's fastest lunch; Filaga inside Chelsea Market sells it if you want to stay indoors.
  • Something warm in Bryant Park in season. The Winter Village Holiday Shops run from October 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027.

If you only have 12 hours

Cut the morning. Start at Chelsea Market for lunch, walk the High Line to Edge for sunset, then take the show and Katz's. That keeps the two things New York does better than anywhere: the skyline at dusk and a night that does not end at 10 p.m.

If your 12 hours are a layover at JFK, be realistic about the round trip. With 40 minutes each way plus security on the way back, you need at least eight hours on the ground to spend four in Manhattan. The free Staten Island Ferry from Whitehall Terminal gives you a harbor and Statue of Liberty view for nothing; it runs 24 hours a day, every 30 minutes on weekends.

Food and the Broadway ticket are on top. New York has no day pass: OMNY charges $3 (£2.20) a ride and caps you at $35 (£26) in seven days on the same card or phone, which only matters if you stay longer. Edge adds a $2 (£1.50) processing fee per ticket.

Getting there from the US and the UK

From the US hubs, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth all fly nonstop to JFK, LaGuardia or Newark. From the Northeast the train is better: the fastest Acela from Washington takes 2 hours 56 minutes and from Boston 3 hours 41 minutes on the current timetable. See overnight trips from New York for the reverse direction.

From the UK, JFK has nonstops from Heathrow, Manchester (Virgin Atlantic), Gatwick (Norse Atlantic, seasonal) and Edinburgh (seasonal). British visitors need an ESTA: CBP now charges $41 (£30) for an approved application, valid for two years or until your passport expires. CBP recommends applying when you book. Our entry rules guide covers the details.

What to skip in 24 hours

Skip the Statue of Liberty ferry. Statue City Cruises is the only operator, everyone goes through airport-style security, and the Park Service warns that waits can pass an hour at busy times. Crown and pedestal tickets sell out. It is a half-day on its own. Skip Times Square in daylight too; you pass through it at night on the way to the show, which is when it makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

Is 24 hours in New York enough?

For Manhattan highlights, yes: one museum, Central Park, the High Line, a skyline deck and a show fit into a Friday. It is not enough for the Statue of Liberty or Brooklyn as well, and it is too short to justify a flight from the UK.

How much is the AirTrain from JFK in 2026?

The Port Authority lists the AirTrain JFK fare at $8.75 (£6.60). Add a $5.25 (£3.90) off-peak LIRR CityTicket or a $3 (£2.20) subway fare for the ride into Manhattan.

Does congestion pricing affect taxis from JFK?

Yes, a little. The TLC adds a 75-cent congestion pricing charge to yellow taxi trips in Manhattan south of 60th Street, on top of the $70 (£52) flat fare and other surcharges.

Do you need to book the Met in advance?

No. The Met says advance tickets are not required. Adults from outside New York State pay $30 (£22). It is closed on Wednesdays and open until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Can you get cheap Broadway tickets on the day?

Yes. The TKTS booth at Broadway and West 47th Street sells same-day seats at up to 50% off. It opens at 3 p.m. on Fridays and 11 a.m. on Saturdays, and closes at 8 p.m.
