24 Hours in Copenhagen
Copenhagen has one of the shortest airport rides in Europe. The M2 metro runs from the terminal to Kongens Nytorv in 14 minutes for $4.50 (£3.40; DKK 30), and the old town it delivers you to is flat and small. Rosenborg Castle, the Round Tower, Nyhavn and the royal square at Amalienborg sit within about a mile (1.6 km) of each other, with Tivoli Gardens at the other end of the main shopping street.
The catch is money and the calendar. The cheapest 3-star-or-better central hotel with a guest score of 8 or more was $104 (£78) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, but $269 (£202) for Friday, June 11, 2027. Tivoli, the city's best evening, opens in seasons and is closed from January 4 to March 18, 2027. The plan below works either way: crown jewels first, a canal boat before the winter boats stop, then Tivoli or straight to dinner in Kødbyen.
At a glance
- Best for
- Food-minded couples and solo travelers who want a compact, safe center and a very fast airport ride
- Skip it if
- You are on a tight budget in summer, or you only want Tivoli and are coming between January 4 and March 18, 2027
- Airport to center
- Metro M2 to Kongens Nytorv in 14 minutes, $4.50 (£3.40; DKK 30) on a 3-zone ticket
- One night, mid-January
- $104 (£78) for a 3-star double in the City Center on Kayak (January 15, 2027); $269 (£202) on June 11, 2027
- Arrive by
- 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Rosenborg slot; in winter the canal boats stop around 3 p.m.
In this guide
The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Rosenborg Castle
Christian IV's small Renaissance castle in the King's Garden, with the Danish crown jewels in the basement treasury. Book an entry time online; the door price is higher.
- 11:45 a.m.
Torvehallerne
Five minutes' walk to the two glass market halls by Nørreport for an open-faced smørrebrød lunch at one of the stalls.
- 1:00 p.m.
Round Tower
Walk up the spiral ramp of the 17th-century observatory tower on Købmagergade for a view over the old town roofs. Tickets are sold only at the door.
- 2:00 p.m.
Nyhavn
Walk Strøget to the painted harbor houses and take a 60-minute guided canal tour with the Netto boats from Heibergsgade. From November to late March the last boats leave around 3 p.m.
- 3:30 p.m.
Amalienborg
Five minutes north: the royal family's four palaces around one octagonal square, with the dome of Frederik's Church at the end of the street.
- 5:30 p.m.
Tivoli Gardens
The 19th-century pleasure garden by the Central Station, at its best lit after dark. Entry prices change by date; it is closed between seasons, including January 4 to March 18, 2027. If it is shut, go straight to Kødbyen.
- 8:00 p.m.
Kødbyen
Dinner and a drink in the white former meatpacking halls of Vesterbro, now filled with restaurants and bars, a 10-minute walk from Tivoli.
- 8:30 a.m.
The Little Mermaid
Next morning, see the statue on Langelinie before the coach groups arrive, then walk to Østerport and take the metro, changing to the M2 at Kongens Nytorv for the airport.
The route is 5.7 miles (9.1 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Tivoli is closed between seasons, including January 4 to March 18, 2027; Rosenborg is closed Mondays from November 2 to December 23 and shuts at 4 p.m. then; the Netto canal boats sail only until about 3 p.m. from November to March 25
How the 24 hours work
Start indoors and early. Rosenborg Castle opens at 10 a.m.; an online ticket with a set entry time is $21 (£15.70; DKK 140), against $23 (£16.90; DKK 150) at the door. The crown jewels are in the basement treasury. From there it is five minutes to Torvehallerne, the market halls by Nørreport, for lunch.
After lunch, climb the spiral ramp of the Round Tower, $9 (£6.70; DKK 60), sold only at the door. Then walk Strøget to Nyhavn for a 60-minute canal tour with the Netto boats, $12 (£9; DKK 80), no booking needed. Timing is the point here: from November 1 to March 25 the boats sail from about 10:20 a.m. to about 3 p.m., in heated, glass-roofed boats. Amalienborg is a five-minute walk on.
The evening depends on the date. Tivoli Gardens runs Halloween to November 1, Christmas from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027, Easter from March 19, 2027 and summer from March 30 to September 26, 2027. Entry for Friday, November 20, 2026 was $32 (£24; DKK 210), without rides. Outside those dates, go straight to Kødbyen for dinner. If it rains, spend longer at Rosenborg and inside Torvehallerne. From November 2 to December 23, Rosenborg is closed on Mondays and shuts at 4 p.m.
Where to stay for one night
Stay in Indre By, the old center, or Vesterbro, the district behind the Central Station and Tivoli. We priced both on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with the stay total including all taxes and fees:
- January 15, 2027: $104 (£78) at Profilhotels Richmond, a 3-star rated 8.1 on Vester Farimagsgade. A 4-star, Scandic Nørreport, was $116 (£87).
- June 11, 2027: $269 (£202) at Absalon Hotel, a 4-star rated 8.6 on Helgolandsgade in Vesterbro. Summer costs more than double.
Vesterbro suits this plan best: Tivoli and Kødbyen are on your doorstep in the evening, and the Central Station has trains to the airport. Indre By is better for the morning, near Rosenborg and the metro at Nørreport and Kongens Nytorv.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The M2 metro leaves from Københavns Lufthavn station at the airport, and the Copenhagen Metro puts the trip to the center at 14 minutes. A 3-zone ticket, valid 1 hour 30 minutes on all metro lines including the airport, costs $4.50 (£3.40; DKK 30). Get off at Kongens Nytorv for Nyhavn or at Nørreport for Rosenborg and Torvehallerne.
If you will ride more than twice, the City Pass covers zones 1 to 4, including the airport, with unlimited travel for 24 hours, for $15 (£11.20; DKK 100). Arrive by 9 a.m. and leave by 9 a.m. the next day, and one pass covers both airport rides.
Taxis have no fixed airport fare. TAXA 4x35 posts a door price for a standard 10 km, 12-minute ride of $35 (£26; DKK 230) on weekdays and $42 (£31; DKK 280) in the evening and at weekends, and adds $3 (£2.20; DKK 20) for rides from the airport.
What to eat in 24 hours
Copenhagen rewards eating well, if not cheaply. Five things to eat:
- Smørrebrød at Torvehallerne: open rye sandwiches with herring, egg and shrimp, or roast beef, from the stalls in the two glass halls.
- Porridge at Grød: the Torvehallerne branch opens at 7 a.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. at weekends, a good breakfast before the airport.
- A Danish pastry from Sankt Peders Bageri on Sankt Peders Stræde in the Latin Quarter, one of the city's old bakeries.
- Dinner in Kødbyen: the old meatpacking district in Vesterbro, where the white halls now hold restaurants, wine bars and breweries.
- Christmas snacks in Tivoli: from November 13, the gardens fill with stalls, and the Tivoli Food Hall is inside the gardens.
Few places publish menu prices online, so we quote none. Expect restaurant bills well above those in Berlin or Kraków.
If you only have 12 hours
Take the metro to Kongens Nytorv, walk Nyhavn and take the canal boat, then walk to Amalienborg and back along Strøget to the Round Tower and Torvehallerne. That loop is about 2.5 miles (4 km). With a long layover in season, end at Tivoli: the Central Station is next to it, with trains to the airport.
What 24 hours costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Hotel, one night, City Center, January 15, 2027 | $104 (£78) |
| Metro to and from the airport (two 3-zone tickets) | $9 (£6.70; DKK 60) |
| Rosenborg Castle (online) | $21 (£15.70; DKK 140) |
| Round Tower | $9 (£6.70; DKK 60) |
| Netto canal tour | $12 (£9; DKK 80) |
| Tivoli entry (Friday, November 20, 2026 price) | $32 (£24; DKK 210) |
Without Tivoli, which is closed in mid-January, the ground costs are $51 (£38; DKK 340) and the January total is $155 (£116). With the June room and Tivoli at the November price, it is $352 (£264). June prices for Tivoli were not on sale when we checked. For comparison, see our Stockholm plan.
Getting there from the US and the UK
From the US, the airport's airlines table lists nonstops from nine of the ten hubs we track. SAS flies from New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles and Atlanta, and seasonally from Miami. Delta adds a seasonal JFK flight. Dallas/Fort Worth is the exception.
From the UK, British Airways and SAS fly from Heathrow, easyJet and Norwegian from Gatwick, Ryanair from Stansted, and easyJet, Norwegian, Ryanair and SAS from Manchester. Edinburgh has easyJet, Norwegian and Ryanair, plus SAS in season. There is no practical train from London.
Entry rules. US and UK citizens enter Denmark visa-free for short stays. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, so you register fingerprints and a photo on first entry. ETIAS is not running yet; the European Commission will announce its start several months ahead, and the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20).
When to go
Late spring and summer give long light evenings and Tivoli at full stretch, at the highest hotel prices. Winter is dark early and cold, and the canal boats stop mid-afternoon, but rooms cost less than half as much. The best winter window is Christmas in Tivoli, November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027; it makes our Christmas market city breaks list. Avoid January 4 to March 18 if Tivoli is the reason you are going. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures.

How do I get from Copenhagen airport to the city center?
Take the M2 metro to Kongens Nytorv. The Copenhagen Metro gives the trip as 14 minutes, and a 3-zone ticket costs $4.50 (£3.40; DKK 30). A 24-hour City Pass, $15 (£11.20; DKK 100), includes the airport.
Is Tivoli open in January?
No. Christmas in Tivoli ends on January 3, 2027, and the gardens reopen for Easter on March 19, 2027, then for summer from March 30 to September 26, 2027.
How much is Tivoli entry?
It changes by date. For autumn 2026, adult entry without rides was $30 (£22; DKK 200) to $35 (£26; DKK 230), and $32 (£24; DKK 210) on Friday, November 20, 2026. An entry and ride pass that day was $58 (£44; DKK 389) in Tivoli's shop.
When is the Tivoli Christmas market in 2026?
Christmas in Tivoli runs from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027, in Tivoli Gardens next to Copenhagen Central Station.
