Heathrow Layover
Heathrow is the rare hub where the city is worth almost any effort: the Elizabeth line reaches Tottenham Court Road in about 33 minutes, and the Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in 15. The catches are paperwork and the clock. US passport holders need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation to pass the border, and Heathrow asks departing passengers who left the airport to come back three hours before a long-haul flight.
For British travelers, Heathrow is home: you can always walk out. This page is for anyone with a long connection here. It covers the border, the hours you need, the fastest rides into town and what fits in 6, 12 or 24 hours. For a full priced plan of the city, see our 24 hours in London page.

Minimum layover to leave the airport: 7.0 hours (6 h 51 min, rounded up). Add an hour if you check a bag through security again or connect between terminals.
Heathrow tells connecting passengers who leave the airport to be back three hours before a long-haul departure and two hours before a short-haul one, because they clear security again
Can you leave Heathrow on a layover?
On a US passport: yes, with an ETA. The UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation costs $27 (£20) on GOV.UK or in the official UK ETA app. The government says you usually get a decision within a day, but it can take up to 3 working days, so apply before you fly, not at the gate. One ETA lasts 2 years or until your passport expires and covers visits of up to 6 months. GOV.UK warns that other websites may charge more: use the government's own.
Staying airside needs no ETA. GOV.UK says you do not need one if you transit without passing through border control. You do need one for a landside transit, which is any layover where you leave the airport, change to a separately booked flight, or sleep in a hotel.
On a UK passport: you can always leave. Heathrow is your home airport, so a long connection is a free trip into London. Heathrow notes that if your airline is transferring your bag to the next flight, leaving the airport does not change that.
There is no EES at Heathrow: the EU's Entry/Exit System applies at Schengen borders, and the UK is outside Schengen.
How long a layover do you need at Heathrow?
Build it from the fixed pieces. Immigration on arrival comes first, and queues vary by terminal and time of day. Then the ride: 33 minutes on the Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road, or 15 minutes on the Heathrow Express to Paddington. Heathrow's own advice for connecting passengers who leave is the big one: be back three hours before a long-haul departure and two hours before a short-haul one, because you clear security again.
- Under 7 hours: stay airside. After the border, two train rides and the three-hour buffer, you get an hour in town at most.
- 7 to 8 hours: a quick loop from Paddington into Hyde Park, on the Heathrow Express.
- 9 to 12 hours: three to five hours in the West End, enough for the National Gallery and a proper meal.
- Overnight: there is nowhere to sleep airside, so sleep in a hotel by the terminals or in central London.
If you booked two separate tickets, Heathrow says you are not a connecting passenger: you collect your bags, check in again and clear security, which eats more of the layover.
Getting into London from Heathrow
Elizabeth line (best value for speed): TfL's journey planner gives 33 minutes from Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 to Tottenham Court Road, with no change. The adult pay-as-you-go fare with a contactless card is $21 (£15.50). Trains also stop at Paddington and Bond Street on the way.
Heathrow Express (fastest): non-stop to Paddington in 15 minutes, every 15 minutes. A walk-up single is $35 (£26), but the same-day return at $40 (£30) is the layover ticket: it costs little more than one way. Advance singles start at $13.30 (£10).
Piccadilly line (cheapest): the Underground takes about 50 minutes to Leicester Square for $7.90 (£5.90) pay as you go. It is slow but reaches Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus directly.
Taxi: black cabs wait at ranks outside every terminal and run on the meter. We could not get a current TfL estimate for the Heathrow run on October 21, 2026, so we publish no figure; on a layover, the train is faster and far cheaper.
Seven or eight hours: Paddington and Hyde Park
With a short window, take the Heathrow Express to Paddington on a same-day return, $40 (£30). Walk south to the Italian Gardens at the top of the Long Water, then along the Serpentine through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. You can see Kensington Palace across the lawns and stop for tea by the water.
This is a walk, not a sightseeing day, and that is the point: everything is close to the train, there is no ticket to book and no queue to misjudge. Turn back to Paddington with time for the 15-minute ride and Heathrow's three-hour buffer.
Twelve hours: the West End and the river
Take the Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road and walk south through Soho and Covent Garden to Trafalgar Square. The National Gallery is free, open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 9 p.m. on Fridays; you can book a free fast-track ticket or walk in.
Walk down Whitehall to Parliament Square for Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, cross Westminster Bridge and follow the South Bank east past the London Eye. Eat at Borough Market by London Bridge, open Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on Mondays. From London Bridge, the Jubilee line links back to the Elizabeth line for the ride to Heathrow.
Twenty-four hours: sleep in London
With a full day, sleep in central London and do it properly: a West End show or a pub dinner, then a morning museum before the train back. Our London plan has the timed route, hotel prices and what each stop costs. If you want an early flight with no stress, sleep at one of the hotels within walking distance of Arrivals instead; you still pass the border to reach them, so the ETA rule applies.
For other European hubs where a long connection pays off, see the best European cities for a 24-hour layover.
Is there a free stopover or transit tour at Heathrow?
No. We found no British Airways or Virgin Atlantic stopover program for London on October 21, 2026, and Heathrow lists no free hotel or free tour for transit passengers. If you want a few days in London on the way somewhere, book it as a multi-city ticket and compare the price. The airlines that do run stopovers, Icelandair in Reykjavík or TAP in Lisbon among them, are in our guide to free stopover programs.
Staying airside: lounges, not beds
Heathrow is a good airport to wait in for a few hours and a poor one for a night. It says plainly that there is nowhere to sleep overnight in the terminal. Pay-in lounges help with the day: in Terminal 2, Plaza Premium starts at $53 (£40) and No.1 Lounge at $59 (£44) per person, both open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Terminals are linked by a free shuttle bus every 10 minutes, and the Heathrow Express carries you free between Terminal 5 and Terminals 2 & 3 with a free ticket.
Left luggage at Heathrow
Heathrow's left-luggage service is run by the Excess Baggage Company and can be booked online. Prices are per item: $13.30 (£10) for up to 3 hours and $20 (£15) for 3 to 24 hours. On a layover with a through-checked bag you need none of this; if you booked separate tickets, it lets you walk into London with only a day bag.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an ETA for a layover at Heathrow?
Only if you leave the airport or pass border control. GOV.UK says airside transit needs no ETA; a landside transit does. On a US passport it costs $27 (£20) and can take up to 3 working days, so apply before you fly. British passports never need one.
Is 6 hours enough to leave Heathrow?
Not really. After immigration, two train rides and Heathrow's advice to be back three hours before a long-haul flight, you get about an hour in London. From about 9 hours you get three.
What is the fastest way from Heathrow to central London?
The Heathrow Express to Paddington in 15 minutes, $35 (£26) one way or $40 (£30) for a same-day return. The Elizabeth line takes 33 minutes to Tottenham Court Road for $21 (£15.50).
Can you sleep in Heathrow Airport?
Heathrow says there is nowhere to sleep overnight in the terminal. Hotels within walking distance of Arrivals are landside, so you pass UK border control to reach them.
Does British Airways have a stopover program?
We found none on October 21, 2026. To spend days in London on the way, book a multi-city ticket and compare fares.
