24 Hours in Seoul
Central Seoul is compact where it matters. Gyeongbokgung, the main royal palace, sits at the top of the old city; the hanok lanes of Bukchon and the tea houses of Insa-dong are a short walk east; and the Cheonggyecheon stream leads you to Gwangjang Market, the best place in the city to eat standing up. Myeong-dong and Namdaemun Market are a short subway ride or a walk to the south. That is a full day, and nearly all of it is free.
The catch is distance from the airport. Incheon is about 30 miles (48.6 km) from the center, and the fastest public link, the AREX Express, takes 43 minutes to Seoul Station for $9.80 (£7.30; ₩13,000). Hotels make up for it: the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel in Jung-gu or Jongno-gu with a guest score of 8 or more was $67 (£50) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, taxes in. Only changing planes? Our Seoul Incheon layover guide covers the airport; this page is about a night in town.

The 24-hour plan
- 9:00 a.m.
Gyeongbokgung
The main Joseon palace at opening. Closed Tuesdays. Visitors wearing hanbok get in free, which is why the rental shops cluster at the gates.
- 11:00 a.m.
Bukchon Hanok Village
Walk uphill east of the palace through lanes of traditional tiled-roof houses. People live here: keep your voice down.
- 12:30 p.m.
Insa-dong
Lunch in the alleys off the main street, then the tea houses and craft shops of Ssamziegil.
- 2:30 p.m.
Cheonggyecheon
Drop down to the restored stream below street level and follow it east toward Dongdaemun.
- 3:30 p.m.
Gwangjang Market
The covered market's food alleys for bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) fried to order, mayak gimbap and yukhoe at the counters.
- 7:00 p.m.
Myeong-dong street food
A short subway ride west for the evening stalls of skewers, egg bread and tteokbokki among the cosmetics shops, open late.
- 8:30 a.m.
Namdaemun Market
Next morning, breakfast at the knife-noodle and hotteok stalls of the old market, a walk from Seoul Station and the AREX back to Incheon.
The route is 4.0 miles (6.5 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Gyeongbokgung is closed Tuesdays (Changdeokgung, the alternative, closes Mondays); if the closed day is a public holiday the palace opens and closes the next non-holiday instead
How the 24 hours work
Do the palace first. Gyeongbokgung opens at 9 a.m. and adult entry is $2.30 (£1.70; ₩3,000), the same for foreign and Korean visitors; anyone wearing hanbok gets in free. Allow an hour and a half, then walk uphill to Bukchon Hanok Village, where people still live in the traditional houses, so keep it quiet. Lunch is in Insa-dong. In the afternoon, follow the Cheonggyecheon stream east to Gwangjang Market for a second, smaller meal, and in the evening take the subway to Myeong-dong for its street-food stalls. The next morning, eat at Namdaemun Market and walk to Seoul Station for the train.
Nothing on this route needs booking. Tuesday breaks the plan: Gyeongbokgung is closed. On a Tuesday, go to Changdeokgung instead, which charges the same $2.30 (£1.70; ₩3,000) and closes on Mondays. If either closing day falls on a public holiday, the palace opens and closes the next non-holiday instead. Palace hours are shorter in winter: from November to February Gyeongbokgung closes at 5 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m., and stays open to 6:30 p.m. in summer.
If it rains, the markets are covered and the subway links everything; drop Bukchon and the stream walk.
Where to stay for one night
Stay in Myeongdong or Jongno, between the palace and the markets. We priced one Friday night on Kayak for two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, all taxes and fees included, using Kayak's Jung-gu and Jongno-gu filter:
- January 15, 2027: $67 (£50) at Daeyoung Hotel Myeongdong, a 3-star rated 8.8. Myeongdong Merlin Hotel, rated 8.1, was $71 (£53).
- June 11, 2027: $76 (£57) at Seoul101 Jongno, a 4-star rated 8.4. The next option was $91 (£68), and far fewer rooms showed for that date.
Myeongdong is the most practical: Seoul Station and the AREX are two subway stops away, and the evening stalls are at the door. Jongno and Insadong put you next to the palace for the morning and have a few hanok guesthouses for a more traditional night.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The AREX Express runs nonstop from Incheon to Seoul Station: 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 from Terminal 2, adult fare $9.80 (£7.30; ₩13,000). Seats are reserved, and Seoul Station's city airport terminal is free to use with an Express ticket. AREX announced four more Express trains a day from October 23, 2026. It also said in October that it had activated a contingency plan for a work-to-rule action by its union, so check its notices for delays before you travel.
The all-stops commuter train on the same line is cheaper but slower; it uses the capital-area fare system, which starts at $1.20 (£0.90; ₩1,550) by transport card for the first 10 km. We could not verify an official taxi fare estimate from Incheon, so none is printed here.
Arriving by KTX from Busan, you are already at Seoul Station, two subway stops from Myeongdong.
What to eat in 24 hours
- Bindaetteok at Gwangjang Market: mung bean pancakes fried in front of you at the counters in the middle of the market.
- Mayak gimbap and yukhoe, also at Gwangjang: small rice rolls and seasoned raw beef, the market's other two famous plates.
- Street snacks in Myeong-dong: skewers, egg bread and tteokbokki from the evening stalls.
- Tea in Insa-dong: the traditional tea houses in the alleys are the place to sit down after the palace.
- Hotteok at Namdaemun Market: sweet filled pancakes for breakfast before the train.
No prices here: the stalls set their own and none publishes a list we could check.
If you only have 12 hours
Take the Express to Seoul Station, walk to Namdaemun and Myeong-dong, and spend the rest at Gyeongbokgung and Gwangjang Market. Budget at least an hour and a half for the two train rides, plus your airline's check-in time. Our layover page covers the transit rules.
What 24 hours costs
For one traveler paying the whole room, on the January date:
- Hotel, Myeongdong: $67 (£50) ($76 (£57) in June, Jongno)
- AREX Express in and out: $19.60 (£14.70; ₩26,000)
- Four subway rides at the base fare: $4.70 (£3.50; ₩6,200)
- Gyeongbokgung: $2.30 (£1.70; ₩3,000)
Total before food: about $94 (£70) in January and $103 (£77) in June. Seoul's paid sights are cheap; the train from Incheon is the biggest item after the room.
Getting there from the US and the UK
Incheon has nonstops from nine of our ten US hubs: New York JFK, Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth, on Korean Air, Asiana, Air Premia, Delta, United and American. Miami has none. From the UK, Korean Air, Asiana and Virgin Atlantic fly nonstop from Heathrow.
Entry rules, and a change in 2027. US and UK citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. Visa-free visitors normally need a K-ETA before departure, but both nationalities are exempt until December 31, 2026. The State Department says US passport holders will need a K-ETA from January 1, 2027, so for any trip next year, apply on the official K-ETA site, which lists a fee of $7.50 (£5.60; ₩10,000); GOV.UK warns that other sites offering it are generally scams and that approval can take up to 72 hours. Korea's free e-Arrival card can be filed online within three days before arrival. See our transit visa guide.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the palace and the hanok lanes, and autumn leaves around the palaces are a draw of their own. Summer is hot, humid and rainy; winter is cold and dry, with shorter palace hours. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures. Compare 24 hours in Tokyo or see our best solo city breaks.

Where Seoul ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Seoul: Gyeongbok Palace, Hanok Village, and Gwangjang Tour
Book the half-day option to keep it near 4 hours; the full day adds the War Memorial and Jogye Temple and runs past 8 hours. Entrance fees and transport are included; food, hanbok rental and lunch are not. Gyeongbokgung closes on Tuesdays, which is why the Tuesday option swaps in N Seoul Tower (observatory not included).

Seoul: NANTA Show Ticket
The official site lists Myeongdong seats at KRW 50,000 to 70,000 (about $38 to $53) and promotes Hongdae from KRW 32,000 (about $24), so the $32 here is cheaper than a full-price A seat but not always the cheapest. Weekday shows are at 5pm and 8pm. The two theatres are different venues and a ticket for the wrong one cannot be changed or refunded.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough in Seoul?
For the historic center, yes: Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insa-dong and two or three markets fit into one day. Gangnam, Hongdae and a hike up Bukhansan need more time.
How long is the AREX from Incheon to Seoul Station?
The Express train takes 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2. The adult fare is $9.80 (£7.30; ₩13,000).
Do Americans need a K-ETA for Korea?
Not until the end of 2026. US and UK passport holders are exempt through December 31, 2026; the State Department says US travelers will need one from January 1, 2027. Apply only on the official K-ETA website.
What day is Gyeongbokgung closed?
Tuesday. If that Tuesday is a public holiday, the palace opens and closes the next non-holiday instead. Changdeokgung, nearby, closes on Mondays.
How much is Gyeongbokgung entry?
$2.30 (£1.70; ₩3,000) for adults, Korean or foreign. Visitors wearing hanbok enter free.
