24 Hours in Porto

Metro: 27 min to Trindade One night from $64 (£48) Compact, steep, all on foot

Porto is the easiest city in Portugal to do in 24 hours. Metro line E runs from the airport to Trindade, in the middle of town, and Metro do Porto's own September 2026 timetable puts the ride at 27 minutes. A Z4 single costs $2.60 (£1.90; €2.30), plus $0.70 (£0.50; €0.60) for the reusable Andante card. From Trindade, every stop on this plan is a walk.

It is also the cheapest of the four Iberian cities we priced for a one-night break. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel with a guest score of 8 in the Ribeira was $64 (£48) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027. The plan below keeps paid entries to two, the Livraria Lello and the Clérigos Tower, and spends the rest of the day on what Porto does best: tiles, steep lanes, the river and an evening view from the other bank. If you want a second city on the same trip, Lisbon is a train ride south.

Coffee at Café Majestic, Rua de Santa Catarina

A last pastry in the belle epoque cafe on the shopping street, five minutes from Bolhão metro for the airport.

    Free

The route is 3.1 miles (5.0 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Livraria Lello and the Clérigos Tower are open every day, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Clérigos keeps 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on some holidays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on December 25 and January 1.

How the 24 hours work

The morning stays at the top of the town and the afternoon works down to the river. You start at Livraria Lello at 9 a.m., when the queue is shortest. Entry is a $17.90 (£13.40; €15.95) voucher you can spend on one of the shop's own editions, and the shop opens every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Buy the ticket online for a set time before you go.

Next door is the Clérigos Tower. The tower-and-museum ticket is $11.20 (£8.40; €10), open every day 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last entry 30 minutes before closing; at Easter, in summer and at Christmas it stays open to 11 p.m. Then you walk to São Bento station for its tile panels, north to the Mercado do Bolhão for lunch, and back down past the cathedral to the Ribeira.

The evening belongs to the Dom Luís I Bridge. Cross the upper deck on foot to the Serra do Pilar terrace in Vila Nova de Gaia for sunset, then walk down to the Gaia quay for dinner beside the port lodges. If it rains, move lunch later and spend longer in the market hall, then take a tasting in one of the Gaia lodges instead of the terrace.

Where to stay for one night

Stay in the Ribeira, the Baixa or around the Avenida dos Aliados. We priced them on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, taxes and fees in:

  • Ribeira: $64 (£48) on January 15, 2027, a few streets above the river quay. Lovely at night, and a climb from everything else.
  • Aliados: the cheapest qualifying hotel on June 11, 2027 was $111 (£83), between Trindade metro and Livraria Lello. The flattest base for this plan.
  • The Baixa around Bolhão: close to the market and Rua de Santa Catarina, and to Bolhão metro for the airport.

Kayak showed cheaper rooms in January in Cedofeita and Boavista. They are outside the center we price in, and further from the river. Porto also charges a municipal tourist tax per guest per night; the city's page failed a security check when checked on October 21, 2026, so confirm the amount with your hotel.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

Metro line E, the violet line, leaves from the terminal. ANA says it runs every 20 or 30 minutes depending on the time and day, so check the next departure as you land. You need a Z4 ticket, $2.60 (£1.90; €2.30), loaded on an Andante card that costs $0.70 (£0.50; €0.60). Get off at Trindade for Aliados and Lello, or ride on to Bolhão for the Baixa.

For a full day of rides, the Andante Tour 1 is $8.70 (£6.50; €7.75) for 24 hours on the whole Andante network, which includes the airport. It only pays off if you take the metro both ways inside 24 hours and ride a few times in between; this plan is on foot.

Taxis wait outside arrivals and are metered. ANA does not publish a fare estimate for Porto; it notes that tolls are added to the meter and that bags larger than 55 x 35 x 20 cm carry a supplement. Trains from Lisbon arrive at Campanhã, a short metro or local train ride from São Bento.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • A francesinha, Porto's layered meat sandwich under melted cheese and a beer-and-tomato sauce. One is a meal.
  • Lunch at the Mercado do Bolhão, the restored market hall, from the stalls or the small restaurants upstairs.
  • Port in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the lodges along the quay pour tastings.
  • A sandes de pernil, a roast pork sandwich, the cheap lunch of the Baixa.
  • A pastry at Café Majestic on Rua de Santa Catarina, for the room more than the coffee.

If you only have 12 hours

Almost all of it survives. Drop the Mercado do Bolhão and Café Majestic, and keep Lello, Clérigos, São Bento, the Ribeira and the bridge at sunset. With the airport 27 minutes away by metro, a midday landing still leaves you the evening in Gaia. Our guide to planning a 24-hour trip explains how we cut routes.

What 24 hours costs

Per person, two adults sharing a January room:

  • Hotel, half a $64 (£48) double: $32 (£24)
  • Metro both ways plus the Andante card: $5.80 (£4.40; €5.20)
  • Livraria Lello voucher: $17.90 (£13.40; €15.95)
  • Clérigos Tower and museum: $11.20 (£8.40; €10)

That is about $67 (£50) before food, drink and the tourist tax, the lowest total of the cities in our Iberian set. It is why Porto features in our cheap European city breaks ranking. Remember that the Lello voucher comes back as a book.

Getting there from the US and the UK

Porto has fewer long-haul routes than Lisbon. Of the US hubs we track, only New York JFK, Newark and Boston had scheduled nonstops in the airport's route table when we checked; from elsewhere you connect, often through Lisbon or Madrid. From the UK, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh have nonstops, some of them seasonal. Heathrow does not.

US and UK citizens need no visa for a short stay. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at all Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026, which means fingerprints and a photo on a first entry and no passport stamp. ETIAS is not yet in operation, and the EU says it will give several months' notice of the start date; the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20). Details are in our entry rules guide.

When to go

Late spring to early fall gives the long evenings this plan is built around, with the sunset from Serra do Pilar coming late in summer. Winter is wetter and the light goes early, but hotel prices are at their lowest, as our January figure shows. The Clérigos Tower keeps late hours at Easter, in summer and at Christmas.

How do I get from Porto airport to the city center?

Metro line E runs from the terminal to Trindade in 27 minutes, every 20 to 30 minutes. A Z4 single is $2.60 (£1.90; €2.30) on an Andante card that costs $0.70 (£0.50; €0.60).

How much is Livraria Lello?

The basic entry is a $17.90 (£13.40; €15.95) voucher that you can redeem against a book from Livraria Lello's own editions. The shop is open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

How much does it cost to climb the Clérigos Tower?

The tower and museum ticket is $11.20 (£8.40; €10), and a tower-only visit is $5.60 (£4.20; €5). Children up to 10 go free. It opens every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
