24 Hours in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one of the few big European cities where the airport is closer than many hotels are to each other. The train from Schiphol, which leaves from the station directly under the terminal, reaches Amsterdam Centraal in 17 minutes, and NS sells the e-ticket from $6.20 (£4.60; €5.50). From Centraal, everything in this plan is a walk or one tram ride.
What makes 24 hours work here is density. The Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the 17th-century canal ring are all inside an area you can cross in about 40 minutes on foot. What makes it hard is booking. The Anne Frank House sells every ticket online for a fixed time slot, and they go on sale six weeks ahead. If you are reading this the week before you travel, check the site before you build the day around it. The plan below puts it at 5:30 p.m., which is easier to get than a morning slot and leaves the evening free.
Hotels are the expensive part. The cheapest central 3-star with a guest score of 8 or more was $137 (£103) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, and $230 (£172) for Friday, June 11, 2027. Compare that with Berlin, where the same search in Mitte found rooms from $77 (£58).

The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Rijksmuseum
Start with the Gallery of Honour: Rembrandt's Night Watch and the Vermeers. Two hours is enough. Book a time slot online; it opens daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- 12:30 p.m.
Albert Cuyp Market
A 15-minute walk south into De Pijp. Lunch standing up: a warm stroopwafel, raw herring, Dutch cheese. The stalls run 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
- 2:15 p.m.
Begijnhof
Tram back to Spui and step through the door into the hidden courtyard of almshouses. Free, quiet, and ten minutes is enough.
- 3:15 p.m.
Winkel 43 on the Noordermarkt
Walk the Herengracht and Prinsengracht north into the Jordaan for apple pie with whipped cream at the corner cafe on the Noordermarkt.
- 4:30 p.m.
Jordaan canals
Wander Bloemgracht and Egelantiersgracht, the narrow canals of the Jordaan, on the way to Westermarkt. This is the canal-ring walk most visitors only see from a boat.
- 5:30 p.m.
Anne Frank House
The one stop that sells out. Tickets are online only, for a set time slot, released every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for six weeks ahead. Allow about an hour; the stairs are steep.
- 7:30 p.m.
Foodhallen
Tram 17 from Westermarkt toward Kinkerstraat to the old tram depot. Order bitterballen and whatever else the stalls have that night.
- 9:30 p.m.
Leidseplein
A 15-minute walk along the Singelgracht to the square that stays busy late: bars, Melkweg and Paradiso for a gig, and the canal ring lit up on the walk home.
- 8:30 a.m.
Vondelpark
Next morning, a loop of the park before the tram to Centraal and the 17-minute train to Schiphol.
The route is 4.8 miles (7.8 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Albert Cuyp Market closed Sundays; Anne Frank House closed on Yom Kippur (September 21, 2026) with short hours on King's Day, May 4, December 25 and 31; Rijksmuseum open daily
How the 24 hours work
The day runs from the museums in the south of the center to the Jordaan in the west, then out to the evening. You start at the Rijksmuseum at 10 a.m. Adult entry is $28 (£21; €25), under-19s free, and it is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Book a time online so you skip the ticket line. Two hours covers the Gallery of Honour with the Night Watch and the Vermeers, which is the reason to go.
Lunch is a 15-minute walk away at the Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp, open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then a tram back to Spui for the hidden courtyard of the Begijnhof, and a walk up the canals into the Jordaan. The Anne Frank House is at 5:30 p.m. Its tickets cost $18.50 (£13.90; €16.50), including a $1.10 (£0.80; €1) booking fee, and are sold only on its own site, every Tuesday at 10 a.m., for dates six weeks later. It opens daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
If you miss the Anne Frank House, swap in the Van Gogh Museum next to the Rijksmuseum and move the Jordaan walk to the late afternoon. If it rains, the plan holds: two of the big stops are indoors and the trams are frequent. The day that breaks it is Sunday, when the Albert Cuyp Market is closed. On a Sunday, eat at Foodhallen at lunch and pick a canal-side cafe for dinner.
Where to stay for one night
Stay inside the Singelgracht, the outer canal that rings the old city. We priced Centrum on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with all taxes and fees in:
- January 15, 2027: $137 (£103). Two hotels tied at that price, Hotel Fine Harmony (3-star) and Quentin Zoo Hotel (4-star, in the Plantage near Artis zoo).
- June 11, 2027: $230 (£172) at Hotel Fine Harmony; the next two qualifying hotels were $237 (£178) and $240 (£180).
For this plan, the best base is the western canal ring or the Jordaan, a few minutes from the Anne Frank House and Westermarkt tram stop. The Plantage is quieter and close to Centraal for the train back. The streets around Damrak and the Red Light District are the loudest at night.
Amsterdam's tourist tax is 12.5% of the room price excluding VAT, according to the City of Amsterdam. Kayak's stay totals above already include it, but check that any rate you book says taxes included.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
Take the train. Schiphol's own page says trains run about eight times an hour between the airport and Amsterdam Centraal, and the trip takes 14 to 17 minutes. NS sells the e-ticket from $6.20 (£4.60; €5.50); buying it online avoids the $1.80 (£1.30; €1.60) surcharge on single-use tickets from machines. You can also tap in and out with a contactless bank card. The platforms are directly below the arrivals hall.
Taxis wait at the official rank outside Schiphol Plaza and run on the meter. Schiphol says a group of one to four people pays $45–$90 (£34–£67; €40–€80) for a ride of 10 to 20 km (6 to 12 miles), which covers the center. The train is faster at most times of day.
If you come by Eurostar, you arrive at Amsterdam Centraal itself, a 20-minute walk or a short tram ride from the Anne Frank House. Trams 13 and 17 run from Centraal to the Westermarkt stop. The GVB Day ticket, $11.20 (£8.40; €10) for 24 hours, covers trams, buses and the metro, but not the train to Schiphol.
What to eat in 24 hours
Amsterdam is a city of snacks rather than long meals, which suits a one-night trip. Five to try:
- A fresh stroopwafel at the Albert Cuyp Market: the syrup waffle pressed while you wait. The market's stalls also sell raw herring with onions and Dutch cheeses by the wedge.
- Apple pie at Winkel 43: the corner cafe on the Noordermarkt in the Jordaan, served with whipped cream. Go mid-afternoon; there is often a line.
- Bitterballen at Foodhallen: deep-fried ragout balls with mustard, in a food hall inside a former tram depot in Oud-West, one tram ride from Westermarkt.
- Fries at Vleminckx de Sausmeester: the takeaway window on Voetboogstraat near Spui, an easy detour on the way to the Begijnhof.
- A beer in a brown cafe: the dark, wood-paneled bars of the Jordaan are the city's living rooms, and the right place for a last drink.
We list no prices here because none of these places publishes a fixed menu price online.
If you only have 12 hours (or a long layover)
With 12 hours, keep the Rijksmuseum, the canal walk through the Jordaan and the Anne Frank House, if you hold a ticket. Drop the market lunch and eat at Foodhallen or near the museum instead. Everything stays within a 2-mile (3 km) loop from Centraal.
If you are connecting at Schiphol, the 17-minute train makes a city visit realistic on a long layover. Our Amsterdam Schiphol layover guide covers the minimum connection time, luggage and which stops fit into six or eight hours.
What 24 hours costs
For one adult, with a shared double room split two ways or not, here is the arithmetic:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Hotel, one night, Centrum, January 15, 2027 | $137 (£103) |
| Train Schiphol to Centraal and back | $12.30 (£9.20; €11) |
| GVB Day ticket | $11.20 (£8.40; €10) |
| Rijksmuseum | $28 (£21; €25) |
| Anne Frank House | $18.50 (£13.90; €16.50) |
On the ground that is $70 (£53; €62) before food. With the January room, the total is $207 (£155); with the June room, $300 (£225). If two of you share the room, each pays roughly half the hotel. You can cut the transit line by walking: only the Foodhallen stop needs a tram.
Getting there from the US and the UK
From the US, Schiphol's airlines table on Wikipedia lists nonstop flights from all ten US hubs we track: JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth, mostly on KLM, Delta and United. United's San Francisco and American's Dallas flights are seasonal.
From the UK, British Airways and KLM fly from Heathrow, easyJet from Gatwick and Stansted, and both KLM and easyJet from Manchester and Edinburgh. The Eurostar from London St Pancras is the other choice. On the October 21, 2026 timetable the fastest direct train took 4 hours 4 minutes, and Eurostar's home page advertised Amsterdam fares from $52 (£39). From December 14, 2026, some London to Amsterdam trains also call at Antwerp. Return trips clear UK border checks at Amsterdam Centraal before boarding. See our city breaks by train from London, or pair Amsterdam with Bruges on the way.
Entry rules. US and UK citizens visit the Netherlands visa-free for short stays. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, so on your first entry you register fingerprints and a photo at the border instead of getting a passport stamp. ETIAS is not yet required: the European Commission says it is not in operation, collects no applications, and will announce a start date several months ahead. Its fee has been set at $22 (£16.80; €20). Ignore any site that asks you to pay for ETIAS now.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons for a walking day: long light, mild air and room on the canal paths. Summer brings the longest evenings and the highest hotel prices, as the June figure above shows. Winter is dark by late afternoon and often wet, but the museums carry the plan and January rooms cost far less. Avoid King's Day on April 27 unless you want the party: the Anne Frank House closes early and the center fills up. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough in Amsterdam?
For a first look, yes. The Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the canal ring fit into one walkable day. You give up the Van Gogh Museum or a canal cruise, and you need an Anne Frank House ticket booked in advance.
How far ahead should I book the Anne Frank House?
Six weeks. The museum releases all tickets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for visits six weeks later, sells them only on its own website, and does not sell at the door. Tickets cost $18.50 (£13.90; €16.50) for adults, including the booking fee.
How do I get from Schiphol to the city center?
Take the NS train to Amsterdam Centraal. It runs about eight times an hour from the station under the terminal and takes 17 minutes. The e-ticket starts at $6.20 (£4.60; €5.50).
How much is the tourist tax in Amsterdam?
The City of Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the overnight price, excluding VAT. Hotels add it to your bill; the Kayak prices on this page already include it.
Do I need ETIAS to visit Amsterdam in 2027?
Not yet. On October 21, 2026, the European Commission said ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being collected. The EU says it will announce the start date several months before launch. The separate Entry/Exit System is already running.
