24 Hours in Philadelphia

69 min from New York by Acela One night from $117 (£88) Airport Line: 24 min to town

Philadelphia has the most efficient history day in the United States. Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Museum of the American Revolution are within three blocks of each other, and the first of them is free without a ticket from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. After that, the Park Service runs guided tours every 20 minutes that need a timed ticket. Start early and you skip the system entirely.

The rest of the day is food and one famous flight of steps. You eat at Reading Terminal Market, walk the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the Rocky Steps, and take the Broad Street Line south for a $19 (£14.20) cheesesteak at Pat's King of Steaks, open 24/7. The city came out of its 250th-anniversary year with new things to see: the First Bank of the United States reopened for the first time in 50 years, and the National Constitution Center added galleries.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 9:00 a.m.

    Independence Hall open house

From 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. the hall is an open house with no ticket needed. Later in the day it is guided tours only, every 20 minutes, with timed tickets.

    Free
  2. 10:00 a.m.

    Liberty Bell Center

Across Chestnut Street, the bell in its glass pavilion. Open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the line is shortest early.

    Free
  3. 10:45 a.m.

    Museum of the American Revolution

Three blocks east at 3rd and Chestnut. Two hours covers Washington's war tent and the main galleries. Any-day tickets with no time slot; $27 (£20) at the door, less online.

    $25 (£18.70)
  4. 1:00 p.m.

    Elfreth's Alley

Ten minutes north, one of the oldest continuously inhabited residential streets in the US, dating to 1703. The street is public and free; the small museum opens Friday to Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.

    Free
  5. 2:00 p.m.

Late lunch at Reading Terminal Market

Walk west along Arch Street to 12th. The market is open daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; queue at Tommy DiNic's Beef and Pork for the roast pork sandwich.

    Free
  6. 4:30 p.m.

The Rocky Steps, Philadelphia Museum of Art

Up the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the museum's east steps for the view back to City Hall. The museum is open until 8:45 p.m. on Fridays if you want to go in; closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

    Free
  7. 7:30 p.m.

Cheesesteak at Pat's King of Steaks

Broad Street Line south, then a short walk to 9th and Passyunk. Pat's is open 24/7 and its cheesesteak is listed at $19 (£14.20). Order at the window, eat at the outdoor counters.

    Free
  8. 9:00 a.m.

    Rittenhouse Square (Saturday)

Saturday morning coffee on the benches of the city's best-kept square, then 30th Street Station or the Airport Line from Suburban Station.

    Free

The route is 6.7 miles (10.7 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Philadelphia Museum of Art closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays; Elfreth's Alley museum opens only Friday to Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.; Independence Hall needs timed tickets after 10:30 a.m.

How the 24 hours work

The plan walks west. Old City first, while the open house is on and the Liberty Bell line is short; then Elfreth's Alley, a street dating to 1703; then lunch at 12th and Arch, the Parkway, and the art museum's steps as the light goes. Dinner is the one transit ride, south on the Broad Street Line.

You do not need to book anything if you are at Independence Hall by 9 a.m. Miss the open house and you need a tour ticket: free, with a $1 (£0.70) reservation fee on Recreation.gov, released 30 days ahead and again at 5 p.m. the day before. The Museum of the American Revolution sells any-day tickets with no time slot.

Closures bend the plan in two places. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, though the steps are always there. The small Elfreth's Alley museum opens only Friday to Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.; the street itself is public at any hour. If it rains, give the Museum of the American Revolution an extra hour and stay inside Reading Terminal Market longer.

Where to stay for one night

Stay in Center City, the grid between the two rivers. On Expedia, two adults, a Friday, taxes and fees in, 3 stars or better and a guest rating of 8 or more:

  • Rittenhouse Square: Motto by Hilton Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square was the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027, at $117 (£88), rated 9.0.
  • Old City: Penn's View Hotel was $126 (£94) in January and $204 (£153) in June, a short walk from Independence Hall for the 9 a.m. start.
  • Convention Center and Market East: the Hampton Inn Philadelphia Center City-Convention Center was the cheapest in June at $173 (£130) on June 11, 2027, and is two blocks from Reading Terminal Market and Jefferson Station.

These are the lowest prices of the five Northeast and Midwest cities in our guide, which is part of why Philadelphia ranks well in the best 24-hour trips in the US.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

SEPTA's Airport Line stops at every terminal and runs every 30 minutes to 30th Street, Suburban and Jefferson stations. SEPTA's own schedule shows 24 minutes from Terminal A to Suburban Station. The fare to any Center City station is $8.75 (£6.60) with a SEPTA Key or a contactless card, or $11 (£8.20) if you pay on board.

Taxis charge a flat $32 (£24) from the airport to the Center City zone, which runs from river to river between Washington Avenue and Fairmount Avenue, plus $1 (£0.70) for each extra passenger.

By train, Amtrak arrives at William H. Gray III 30th Street Station. The fastest Acela from Moynihan Train Hall in New York takes 69 minutes on the current timetable, which puts Philadelphia in our best overnight trips from New York.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • A cheesesteak at Pat's King of Steaks, 1237 East Passyunk Avenue. Pat's menu lists the cheesesteak at $19 (£14.20), and it is open around the clock.
  • Roast pork at Tommy DiNic's, the Reading Terminal Market stand known for its beef and pork sandwiches. The market, at 12th and Arch, is open daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • A browse through the rest of the market: bakeries, ice cream and the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch counters are all under one roof.
  • Coffee on Rittenhouse Square on Saturday morning, from any of the cafes on the square's edges.

For how Philadelphia's two sandwiches stack up against bigger food cities, see the best food cities for 24 hours.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and Reading Terminal Market; they are all within a mile. Drop the Rocky Steps and the Museum of the American Revolution if you are short. That is half a day on foot from Jefferson or Suburban Station, and the Airport Line goes straight back to the terminals.

If you only have an evening, go straight to Pat's and then walk East Passyunk Avenue.

What 24 hours costs

ItemJanuaryJune
Hotel, one night (whole room)$117 (£88)$173 (£130)
Airport Line, both ways$17.50 (£13.10)$17.50 (£13.10)
SEPTA One Day Convenience Pass$7.50 (£5.60)$7.50 (£5.60)
Museum of the American Revolution (online)$25 (£18.70)$25 (£18.70)
Total$167 (£125)$223 (£167)

Independence Hall's open house and the Liberty Bell cost nothing. The One Day Convenience Pass covers SEPTA buses and the Metro lines, including the Broad Street Line, but not Regional Rail, so the Airport Line is a separate fare. A single Metro ride is $2.90 (£2.20) if you only need one.

Getting there from the US and the UK

PHL has nonstops from Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. From New York and Washington, take the train: 69 minutes from Moynihan and well under two hours from Washington's Union Station. Philadelphia also pairs with a night in New York or Washington, DC on the same rail line.

From the UK, American and British Airways fly from Heathrow and American flies from Edinburgh in season. British travelers need an approved ESTA, $41 (£30) on the official CBP site, valid for two years. See our entry rules guide.

When to go

Winter is cheap and quiet at the history sites, and from November 21 to December 27, 2026 the free Christmas Village fills LOVE Park and the City Hall courtyard, open until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The Museum of the American Revolution's 250th-anniversary show, The Declaration's Journey, runs to January 3, 2027, and A Nation of Artists at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy runs to mid-2027. Summer is busier and warmer, but Center City rooms stay far below New York or Boston prices.
