October splits Europe along the Alps. South of them, the three cities at the top of this list have daytime highs of 71°F to 73°F (21.6°C to 22.7°C) and weather scores of 8.7 to 9.3. North of them, highs drop to between 58°F (14.7°C) in Berlin and 63°F (17.2°C) in Paris, rainy days climb to 12 or 13 in Paris, London and Bruges, and sunshine falls to between six and seven and a half hours a day.
The ranking follows that line, with one twist. Because the month score is 60% Snack Score and only 40% weather, a cool city with a strong one-night trip still places well: Kraków is fourth on a weather score of just 7.4, carried by a Snack Score of 8.5 and the cheapest night on the list. At the top, Florence combines Europe's highest Snack Score, 8.6, with an 8.7 for weather. Rome and Madrid have warmer, sunnier Octobers but lower Snack Scores, so they follow.

The ranking
Score = 40% this month’s weather + 60% the Snack Score, plus a market bonus in November and December for cities with a Christmas market. No more than 3 cities from one region. How we score
Florence leads October, as it led September, on 8.64. The weather is a notch cooler, 71°F (21.6°C) with 10.8 rainy days and a score of 8.7, and its Snack Score of 8.6 does the rest: 9 for sights, 8.5 for food and a compact walk. Food is the October case: lampredotto at the Mercato Centrale for lunch, an aperitivo on Piazza Santo Spirito, bistecca alla fiorentina in San Frediano. A fixed taxi from the airport to the historic center is $31 (£24; €28), plus surcharges. The cathedral is closed on Sundays, so arrive on a weekday.
Rome is second with the strongest editors' marks in the south: 10 for sights and 9 for food. October brings highs of 73°F (22.7°C), the warmest on the list, and a weather score of 9.0. Book the Colosseum's timed entry, $20 (£15.10; €18), before you fly, and mind the date: from October 25, 2026, last entry is 3:30 p.m. and the park closes at 4:30 p.m., so the Forum follows straight on. The Leonardo Express takes 32 minutes from Fiumicino for $15.70 (£11.80; €14). Our page hedges because the Vatican needs a day of its own.
Madrid has the best October weather score on the list, 9.3, with highs of 71°F (21.9°C) and 8.1 rainy days, and it shares the top evening score, 10, with London. Dinner at 10 p.m. is normal, the tapas bars of Calle de la Cava Baja fill late, and the Mercado de San Miguel stays open to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The Exprés Aeropuerto bus takes 30 to 40 minutes for $5.60 (£4.20; €5), and a flat taxi fare anywhere inside the M-30 is $37 (£28; €33). The Reina Sofía, $13.50 (£10.10; €12), is closed on Tuesdays.
Kraków is fourth on a weather score of only 7.4, because its Snack Score, 8.5, is the second highest in Europe. October is cool, 59°F (14.8°C) with 6.6 hours of sunshine a day, so the indoor stops matter: Wawel's royal apartments, St. Mary's Basilica and Schindler's Factory. Its one-night cost, $50 (£37), is the lowest of the ten, with rooms in Kazimierz and the Old Town at $61 (£46) on our January Friday. The SKA1 timetable valid from October 25, 2026 still shows 17 minutes from the airport. Kazimierz's bars around Plac Nowy, Alchemia among them, keep the evening going.
Budapest joins the list in October on a weather score of 9.0: highs of 62°F (16.6°C) and 7.3 rainy days, the fewest of the ten. Its evening scores 8.5, with the ruin bars around Szimpla Kert and the lit Danube bridges. Mind one date: October 23 is a Hungarian public holiday, and the Great Market Hall, the plan's breakfast stop, is closed. The Széchenyi bath costs $46 (£34; HUF 14,800) on Fridays and weekends and $41 (£30; HUF 13,200) Monday to Thursday. From the US, none of the hubs we track has a nonstop.
Vienna is sixth on a weather score of 8.3, with highs of 61°F (16°C). Its Snack Score, 7.7, rests on cheap rooms and a fast arrival: a central room was $71 (£53) on our January Friday, and the 15-minute Railjet earns a full 10 for the airport ride. The S-Bahn closure through the center runs to the end of October 2027, so the City Airport Train still runs as a bus this month. On a Thursday the Kunsthistorisches Museum stays open to 9 p.m., which frees the morning for Schönbrunn, $34 (£25; €30).
Paris is seventh in October. Highs of 63°F (17.2°C), 12 rainy days and 6.6 hours of sunshine give a weather score of 8.0, and its Snack Score of 7.8 is pulled down by an 8.5-mile (13.7 km) route and a cost factor of 4.6. October has its own rule: the Louvre made reservations compulsory from October 17 to November 1, 2026, so book the Friday late opening, $36 (£27; €32), ahead. If it rains, the plan stays longer in the Louvre and skips the Trocadéro. The tower still sparkles on the hour after dark.
London is eighth on 7.76. October gives it highs of 60°F (15.6°C), 12 rainy days and 6.2 hours of sunshine, a weather score of 7.4. What survives the weather is the evening, scored 10: a pre-theatre table at Dishoom in Covent Garden, booked before 6 p.m., then a 7:30 p.m. curtain. If it rains, the plan takes the Jubilee line three stops from Westminster to London Bridge and gives Tate Modern longer. A US passport holder needs a UK ETA, $27 (£20), before flying. The one-night cost, $129 (£97), is the second highest of the ten.
Bruges is ninth with the wettest October on the list, 13 rainy days, and a weather score of 7.3. It places because the three-per-region rule keeps Venice, Lisbon and Prague out, and because its plan is the most compact here, 1.4 miles (2.3 km). October is the last month when the canal boats are guaranteed daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; from November only one jetty is sure to open each day. Eurostar and an SNCB train via Brussels take about 3 hours 30 minutes from London. The catches: $140 (£105) for one night, the highest of the ten, and a quiet evening.
Berlin closes the list on 7.16. It is the coolest city here, 58°F (14.7°C), and the least sunny, six hours a day. It earns its place on the evening, scored 9, and on price: a Mitte room was $77 (£58) on our January Friday, and the one-night cost is $74 (£55). One airline note for autumn 2026: Wikipedia lists Ryanair's Berlin base as ending on October 24, 2026, with some routes ending, so check a fare before you plan around it. The Reichstag dome is free with advance registration.
The October score blends the city's October weather, 40%, from Open-Meteo records for 2016 to 2025, with its Snack Score, 60%. Then a cap applies: no region places more than three cities. In October that rule bites hard. Venice, on 8.36, and Lisbon, on 8.34, would rank fourth and fifth, and Porto would also beat Kraków and Barcelona would beat Vienna, but Florence, Rome and Madrid already hold southern Europe's three places. Prague, on 7.80, is left out behind Kraków, Budapest and Vienna. That is why Bruges and Berlin fill the last two places with scores below 7.5. The cap keeps a month list from becoming a list of one region; the rules are in how we score cities.
What October is like, south and north
In the south, October is still a walking month. Rome, Florence and Madrid have highs of 71°F to 73°F and between 8.1 and 10.8 rainy days, with 8.3 to 8.9 hours of sunshine a day. That is enough for a long outdoor afternoon and a dinner that starts in daylight.
North and east of the Alps, October is a jacket month. Budapest is the exception, with 7.3 rainy days and a 9.0 weather score. Paris, London and Bruges all see 12 or 13 rainy days, and Berlin and London get about six hours of sunshine. For those cities, pick a plan whose big stops are indoors: the Louvre, Tate Modern, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wawel's royal apartments.
Dates and closures this October
October 17 to November 1, 2026: the Louvre requires a reservation for every visitor.
October 23: a Hungarian public holiday; the Great Market Hall in Budapest is closed.
October 24, 2026: the date Wikipedia gives for the end of Ryanair's Berlin base.
October 25, 2026: the Colosseum moves to winter hours, last entry 3:30 p.m., until February 28, 2027. Kraków's new SKA1 airport timetable starts the same day.
October 31: the last day of summer hours at Prague Castle, whose buildings close at 4 p.m. from November 1, and the last month of daily canal boats in Bruges.
To the end of October 2027: Vienna's S-Bahn trunk line stays closed, and the City Airport Train runs as a bus.
What one October night costs
We priced hotels for Friday, January 15 and Friday, June 11, 2027, so October has no price of its own. The one-night cost on each card, half the average room, the airport ride there and back and a day ticket, spreads widely this month. Kraków is cheapest at $50 (£37), followed by Florence at $66 (£49) and Budapest and Vienna at $67 (£50). Bruges is dearest at $140 (£105), because its rooms were $118 (£88) and $160 (£120) and the train from Brussels Airport is $30 (£23; €27) each way. Rome, at $119 (£89), and London, at $129 (£97), are the next two. The cheap city breaks list ranks on cost alone.
Which October city for which trip
For the late night, take Madrid or London, both scored 10 after dark. For the warmest afternoon, Rome. For a trip from London without a plane, Paris by Eurostar in 136 minutes, or Bruges with a change in Brussels. From the US, Rome, Madrid, Paris and London have nonstops from all ten hubs we track, while Florence and Budapest have none, so a connection eats into one night.
Entry rules are the same for every Schengen city here: the EU's Entry/Exit System has recorded fingerprints and a photo since April 10, 2026, and ETIAS is not yet running and has no start date; it will cost $22 (£16.80; €20). London requires a UK ETA from US citizens, $27 (£20).
Booking through these links supports this site at no cost to you. Prices move by date, so we do not print them here; the official prices we checked are in the page above.
