Frankfurt Layover
Frankfurt Airport is about 13 km (8 miles) from the city center and has its own S-Bahn station under Terminal 1. Deutsche Bahn says lines S8 and S9 take about 12 minutes between the airport and Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof, with a train roughly every 10 minutes. A single costs $7.70 (£5.80; €6.90). That puts the old town within reach of a fairly short connection.
Frankfurt has no 24-hour city page on this site, so this page carries the whole plan: what to see in 6, 12 and 24 hours, with named places and prices. Two things to know first. The new Terminal 3 is not on the S-Bahn: the free SkyLine train links it to the station in 10 to 15 minutes. And Fraport asks travelers leaving the Schengen area to arrive at least three hours before departure.

Minimum layover to leave the airport: 6.5 hours (6 h 09 min, rounded up). Add an hour if you check a bag through security again or connect between terminals.
Fraport asks non-EU passengers and anyone flying outside the Schengen area to arrive at least three hours before departure (October 2026 fall-break advice); Schengen passengers with checked bags about two and a half hours
Can you leave Frankfurt Airport on a layover?
Yes, on a US or UK passport. Germany is in the Schengen area: up to 90 days without a visa. The UK government counts it as 90 days in any 180 and wants your passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid 3 months after you leave. The US State Department asks for 3 months' validity beyond your departure date and 2 blank pages.
ETIAS is not required yet: the EU's ETIAS site says it is not in operation, and the fee will be $22 (£16.80; €20) when it starts. EES is live: the European Commission says it has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, and Frankfurt Airport warns it may cause longer waits at border control. Self-service EES kiosks at some checkpoints let you enter your data before you reach the officer. US citizens can also register once with the Federal Police for EasyPASS-RTP, the automated e-gates.
On a non-Schengen to non-Schengen connection, for example Chicago to Delhi, you can stay airside and never see a border guard; the MY CLOUD Transit Hotel is built for exactly that.
How long a layover do you need in Frankfurt?
Build it from the fixed pieces. Passport control and EES on arrival, slower the first time. If you land at Terminal 3, add the SkyLine ride, 10 to 15 minutes, to reach the station. Then the S-Bahn, about 12 minutes each way. Then the return: Fraport asks non-EU passengers and anyone flying outside Schengen to be there at least three hours before departure; Schengen passengers with checked bags about two and a half hours.
- Under 6 hours: stay airside. Two border crossings and the three-hour buffer leave less than an hour in town.
- 6 hours: about 90 minutes in the old town: the Römerberg and the river.
- 8 to 12 hours: a market lunch and the Städel Museum.
- Overnight: sleep in town, or at MY CLOUD or a napcab without leaving the airport.
Getting into Frankfurt from the airport
S-Bahn (fastest and cheapest): lines S8 and S9 leave from the Regional Train Station on the lower level of Terminal 1, reachable from all of Terminal 1's areas. The ride to the Hauptbahnhof takes about 12 minutes. A trip between the airport and Frankfurt falls in fare level 4: $7.70 (£5.80; €6.90) for an adult single including changes, or $15.10 (£11.30; €13.50) for a day ticket valid until 5 a.m. the next morning, according to traffiQ's 2026 fare list. Buy the day ticket if you will ride the train both ways and use a tram in town.
Long-distance trains (ICE and IC) leave from the separate long-distance station, about 5 minutes on foot from Terminal 1, for Cologne, the Rhine and beyond.
Taxi: taxis and ride-hailing cars run around the clock from the terminals on Frankfurt's meter. The airport publishes no fare estimate, so we give none; with a 12-minute train, a taxi rarely makes sense on a layover.
Six hours: the Römerberg and the Main
With about 90 minutes in town, keep it to the old town. From the Hauptbahnhof, walk east along the river or ride the S-Bahn on to Hauptwache, then walk to the Römerberg, the square of half-timbered fronts and the Römer, Frankfurt's city hall. Walk through the rebuilt lanes of the Neue Altstadt to Frankfurt Cathedral (the Kaiserdom), then down to the Eiserner Steg, the iron footbridge over the Main, for the view of the skyline.
If it is a weekday or Saturday, grab lunch at the Kleinmarkthalle, the covered market between Hasengasse and Liebfrauenberg, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sundays. It has more than 60 stalls, so a quick sausage or a plate of Frankfurt's green sauce is easy. Then head back for the train.
Twelve hours: add the Städel and Sachsenhausen
With 8 to 12 hours, follow the six-hour walk and cross the Eiserner Steg to the Museumsufer, the row of museums on the south bank. The Städel Museum is the one to pick: European painting from the Middle Ages to now. It opens Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday until 9 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. Adult tickets cost $21 (£16; €19), and on Tuesdays from 3 p.m. entry is $11.20 (£8.40; €10).
Finish in Alt-Sachsenhausen, the old quarter behind the museums, where the apple-wine taverns serve Frankfurt's sour cider with green sauce and Handkäse. Walk back over the river to the Hauptbahnhof for the train, with the three-hour buffer intact.
Twenty-four hours: sleep in town or at the gate
With a full day, you have two good choices. Sleep in the city, eat in Sachsenhausen, and spend the morning at the Städel or the Kleinmarkthalle before the 12-minute ride back; the day ticket at $15.10 (£11.30; €13.50) is valid until 5 a.m. the next day. Or keep the evening in town and sleep airside: on a non-Schengen connection, MY CLOUD means no border check in the morning.
Note the Monday trap: the Städel closes on Mondays and the Kleinmarkthalle on Sundays, so a Sunday-to-Monday layover is a walking day. For hubs with bigger headline sights on a full day, see Paris CDG, Amsterdam Schiphol or the best European cities for a 24-hour layover. If Germany is your goal rather than your connection, our 24 hours in Berlin plan is the bigger trip.
Is there a Lufthansa stopover in Frankfurt?
No, not in Frankfurt. Lufthansa launched a Stopover Program in Munich in 2026: on US and Singapore routes, and since then several Asian ones, you can add a stop of 24 hours to seven days in Munich when booking on lufthansa.com, for any cabin, sometimes with a surcharge, and add hotels and tours. Lufthansa says other Group hubs may follow, but on October 21, 2026 Frankfurt had no offer and no free transit tour. Compare the other programs in our guide to free stopover programs.
Staying airside: MY CLOUD, napcabs and free entertainment
Frankfurt is a good airport to wait in. The MY CLOUD Transit Hotel sits in the non-Schengen transit area of Terminal 1 at Gate Z25: 59 rooms with their own small bathrooms, bookable by the hour from 3 to 24 hours, with reception open 24/7. It is only for passengers whose route includes at least one non-Schengen flight.
napcabs are soundproofed sleep cabins in Terminal 1 (Pier A Schengen, and transit area B on level 3 next to a rooftop terrace) and in Terminal 3 (Piers H and J). They cost $19.10 (£14.30; €17) an hour from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., minimum 2 hours, and $13.50 (£10.10; €12) an hour overnight, minimum 3 hours. Fraport also runs free Gaming World, Movie World and leisure zones, and a new Air France and KLM lounge opened in Terminal 3.
Left luggage at Frankfurt Airport
Fraport's baggage storage is in Terminal 1, Area B, Level 1 (Arrivals), open 24 hours, and in Terminal 3, Area J, Level 2, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. No reservation is possible. In Terminal 1 a normal bag costs $10.10 (£7.60; €9) for up to 4 hours or $13.50 (£10.10; €12) per 24 hours started. Mind the Terminal 3 closing time if you come back late.
