The best city breaks in Europe in September

Ranked for September 26 European cities scored #1: Florence, 8.72

September is the month the weather stops sorting the list. In July and August, heat knocked Florence, Rome and Madrid out of contention. In September every one of the ten below scores at least 8.6 out of 10 for weather, from Kraków's 8.6 to 9.8 in Porto and Lisbon, so the Snack Score, the one-night score every city on the site carries, does most of the work.

That is how Florence comes first. Its weather, 8.9, is only eighth best here, with highs of 80°F (26.6°C), but its Snack Score of 8.6 is the highest in Europe, built on a compact plan and a 20-minute tram from the airport. The south is still warm, with Florence and Lisbon at 80°F, while the north turns cool: London's high is 68°F (19.9°C) and Copenhagen's 64°F (17.9°C). Sunshine falls too, to between 8.4 and 11.1 hours a day across the ten.

Florence

8.7/10
80°F high 10 rain days 11 h sun

Florence has the highest Snack Score in Europe, 8.6, and September is when its weather stops holding it back: highs of 80°F (26.6°C), 9.6 rainy days and a weather score of 8.9. The plan is a 3.2-mile (5.1 km) walk from the cathedral to Santo Spirito, and the T2 tram from the airport takes 20 minutes for $2.20 (£1.70; €2). Book two things before you fly: the Brunelleschi Pass, $34 (£25; €30), with a fixed dome-climb slot, and the Uffizi, $33 (£24; €29), which is closed on Mondays. None of our US hubs flies here nonstop.

Porto

8.7/10
74°F high 6 rain days 11 h sun

Porto is second in September only because Florence arrives. Its own weather score is 9.8, tied with Lisbon for the best on the list: highs of 74°F (23.4°C) and 5.9 rainy days. The evening is the walk over the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge to the Serra do Pilar terrace for sunset, then dinner on the Gaia quay by the port lodges. The Clérigos Tower ticket, $11.20 (£8.40; €10), covers the tower and its museum. A central room was $64 (£48) on our January Friday and $111 (£83) on our June one.

Kraków

8.5/10
69°F high 12 rain days 9 h sun

Kraków ties Lisbon on 8.54 and ranks ahead of it on the higher Snack Score, 8.5 against 7.7. September cools it to 69°F (20.3°C), with 12 rainy days and 8.6 hours of sunshine a day. Wawel's castle routes open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from September to December, with last entry two hours before closing, so the castle can move to the afternoon this month. The 1st and 2nd floor route is $24 (£18.20; PLN 95) with an audio guide. A KMK 24-hour ticket, $5.10 (£3.80; PLN 20), covers trams and buses.

Lisbon

8.5/10
80°F high 4 rain days 11 h sun

Lisbon ties Kraków on 8.54 and ranks behind it on the Snack Score, 7.7, which includes a hedge from our page: Belém and the old town split the day, and the hills slow it down. The weather is near perfect, 9.8, with highs of 80°F (26.4°C) and 3.9 rainy days, the fewest on the list. The airport metro takes about 20 minutes to downtown for $2.20 (£1.60; €1.92). Dinner is fado in Alfama, and the night can run on to the street bars of Rua da Atalaia in Bairro Alto.

Prague

8.5/10
70°F high 9 rain days 9 h sun

Prague's September is mild, 70°F (21.1°C), with 8.8 rainy days and a weather score of 9.3. It ranks fifth on a Snack Score of 8.0 and the shortest route of the ten, 3 miles (4.8 km) from the castle down to Josefov. Trolleybus 59 and metro line A take 35 minutes from the airport for $2.30 (£1.70; CZK 50). The castle buildings keep summer hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., until October 31. Rooms in Prague 1 cost half in winter: $62 (£46) on our January Friday against $125 (£94) in June.

Paris

8.4/10
71°F high 9 rain days 9 h sun

Paris holds 8.36 for a third month running. September gives it highs of 71°F (21.9°C) and a 9.2 weather score. It has the best food score on the list, 10: falafel on Rue des Rosiers, dinner on Rue de Buci, pastries on Rue des Martyrs. The hedge on our page is breadth, since one night means the river core, not Versailles or the Orsay. A change to note: Eiffel Tower stairs tickets have needed a reservation since September 29, 2026. The Navigo Jour, $13.80 (£10.30; €12.30), covers zones 1 to 5 but not airport services.

Vienna

8.3/10
71°F high 10 rain days 9 h sun

Vienna's September weather score is 9.2, with highs of 71°F (21.8°C). Two changes began here in September 2026 and still apply: the Kunsthistorisches Museum admits visitors only with a time slot, since September 8, and the S-Bahn line through the center is closed until the end of October 2027. Neither breaks the plan. Book the museum for 10:30 a.m., take U4 to Schönbrunn after lunch at the Naschmarkt, and end at the State Opera. Rooms are cheap all year: $71 (£53) in January and $78 (£58) in June.

The Palace of Westminster and Big Ben across the River Thames in London8

London

8.3/10
68°F high 11 rain days 8 h sun

London ties Copenhagen on 8.28 and ranks ahead on its Snack Score, 8.0 against 7.8. September cools it to 68°F (19.9°C), with 11.3 rainy days and a weather score of 8.7. Its strengths do not change with the season: 10 for sights, 10 after dark, and same-day West End seats from the TKTS booth in Leicester Square. The weekend is the weak point. The Abbey is closed to sightseers on Sundays, and St Paul's opens then only for worship. Westminster rooms started at $115 (£86) on our January Friday.

24 hours in London

64°F high 11 rain days 9 h sun

Copenhagen is the coolest city on the list in September, 64°F (17.9°C), yet its weather score of 9.0 beats London's. It is the last month of Tivoli's summer season, which in 2027 closes on September 26. Rosenborg's crown jewels open at 10 a.m., $21 (£15.70; DKK 140) online, and the Round Tower, $9 (£6.70; DKK 60), sells tickets only at the door. Copenhagen's Snack Score of 7.8 includes a cost factor of 4.2, the second weakest here after London: a central room was $269 (£202) on our June Friday.

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin with people walking through Pariser Platz10

Berlin

8.2/10
70°F high 7 rain days 9 h sun

Berlin takes the last place despite the third-best weather of the ten, 9.7: highs of 70°F (20.9°C) and only 6.9 rainy days. Good weather cannot lift a Snack Score of 7.2, which carries a hedge for a city spread across districts. The evening is the strength, scored 9: the bars around Kottbusser Tor in Kreuzberg and the clubs near Warschauer Strasse. A BVG 24-hour ticket for zones A and B is $12.60 (£9.40; €11.20). A Mitte room was $77 (£58) on our January Friday and $124 (£93) in June.

How the September list was built

A city's September score is 40% its weather that month, from our Open-Meteo dataset covering 2016 to 2025, and 60% its Snack Score. Because the weather is good almost everywhere, the region cap does real work this month: no region may place more than three cities. Florence, Porto and Lisbon fill southern Europe, so Venice and Madrid, both on 8.44, and Rome, on 8.26, are left out. Venice and Madrid would otherwise have ranked sixth, and Rome outscores Berlin. Kraków, Prague and Vienna fill central Europe, which leaves out Budapest on 8.28. The full method is in how we score cities.

What September is like across Europe

On our numbers, September is the most even month of the year for these ten cities. Daytime highs run from 64°F (17.9°C) in Copenhagen to 80°F in Florence and Lisbon, which keeps every city inside or close to the comfortable band the formula rewards. Rain is light in the south and on the Atlantic: Lisbon averages 3.9 rainy days and Porto 5.9, while Kraków and London still see 11 to 12. Berlin, at 6.9, is the driest of the central and northern cities.

The light is shorter than in summer but still generous: between 8.4 hours of sunshine a day in London and 11.1 in Lisbon. That changes the evening plans a little. A sunset stop such as Porto's Serra do Pilar or Florence's Ponte Vecchio comes earlier, so dinner can follow it without a long wait.

Autumn changes that affect the plans

  • Vienna: the Kunsthistorisches Museum has needed a booked time slot since September 8, 2026, and the S-Bahn trunk line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed until the end of October 2027. Schönbrunn closes at 5:30 p.m. through early November, then earlier.
  • Paris: Eiffel Tower stairs tickets need a reservation since September 29, 2026, and new tower fares apply from January 11, 2027.
  • Copenhagen: Tivoli's 2027 summer season ends on September 26. Plan a late-September trip around Kødbyen for the evening instead.
  • Kraków: from September to December, Wawel's castle routes stay open to 7 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday.
  • Florence: the bus and tram single has cost $2.20 (£1.70; €2) since August 1, 2026, and the Duomo museum closes on the first Tuesday of each month.
  • Berlin: Wikipedia's airport table lists Ryanair's Berlin base as ending on October 24, 2026; check that a low-cost route still runs before you build a trip on it.

Prices in September

Our hotel checks are for two Fridays, January 15 and June 11, 2027; we have no September price. The June figure is the safer guide for early autumn. On those dates Florence went from $76 (£57) to $160 (£120), and Lisbon from $89 (£67) to $127 (£95). The one-night cost, half the average room, two airport rides and a day ticket, puts Kraków lowest at $50 (£37), Porto and Prague at $58 (£43), and London highest at $129 (£97). Florence's $66 (£49) is low because its tram costs $2.20 (£1.70; €2) each way and the center is walked. Our cheap city breaks list ranks on cost.

Choosing between the ten

If you are flying from the US, Florence is the awkward #1: none of the hubs we track has a nonstop, so you connect in Europe or take the train from Rome. Lisbon, with nonstops from eight of the ten hubs, or Paris, with all ten, are the easier one-night trips. From London, Paris is the only one by train, 136 minutes by Eurostar; Florence has flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. If you want the late evening, pick Berlin or London over Florence, whose night scores 6.5. If you want warm, dry days, take Lisbon, with 3.9 rainy days.

Entry rules: the EU's Entry/Exit System has taken fingerprints and a photo at Schengen borders since April 10, 2026; ETIAS is not running and has no start date, and will cost $22 (£16.80; €20). For London, a UK ETA costs US citizens $27 (£20). Our 24-hour trip planning guide covers booking timed entries.
