A layover is a free sample of a city, if the airport lets you out quickly and the ride is short. This page ranks the 15 hubs we cover for US and UK passport holders by what a connection actually buys: whether you can leave without a visa, how long the ride into town takes, how good the reward is, whether an airline pays for a hotel or a tour, how pleasant it is to stay airside, and how many of our US and UK airports fly there nonstop.
The order is computed, not voted, and two of the 15 hubs carry a safety adjustment explained below. If your connection is in Europe, the European layover ranking compares the eight hubs there. If you are choosing an airline for its free nights, read the free stopover programs guide first.

Score = the Layover Score: six factors, from entry rules and the ride into town to stopover deals. How we score
From 5.5 h 20 min into town Free stopover on your ticket
Lisbon takes first place on the two factors that matter most for a short trip. The metro reaches downtown in about 20 minutes for $2.20 (£1.60; €1.92), a perfect ride score, and the payoff, the Baixa, Rossio and a pastel de nata at Manteigaria, scores 9. TAP's Portugal Stopover adds up to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto with no extra airfare, though you pay the hotel. Eight of our US hubs and all five UK airports fly nonstop. The catch is the terminal: we found no airside hotel, so it scores 3.5 for staying in. Leave from about 6 hours.
Hong Kong ties Lisbon at 8.5 and loses only on the decimals. The Airport Express reaches Central in 24 minutes for $15.30 (£11.50; HK$120), and the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour is a short walk from the station. The airport runs free guided tours for layovers over 7 hours, which lifts its deal score to 8. What holds it back is connections: six of our US hubs and two UK airports, Heathrow and Manchester, fly nonstop. There is no airside transit hotel, so an overnight means immigration or a pay-in lounge.
Changi is the only hub with a perfect airport score: free snooze lounges, airside transit hotels with a rooftop pool in T1, and the T3 Butterfly Garden. It ranks third because the ride is slower, about 40 minutes on the MRT with a change at Tanah Merah, and only four US hubs (JFK, Newark, Los Angeles and San Francisco) and three UK airports fly nonstop. The Free Singapore Tour, 2.5 hours by bus for layovers of 5.5 to 24 hours, makes a short connection worth leaving. Fill in the free SG Arrival Card within 3 days before landing.
Paris scores the maximum for connections, with nonstops from all ten of our US hubs and all five UK airports, and 9 for the payoff: the RER B reaches Châtelet-Les Halles in 35 to 50 minutes for $15.70 (£11.80; €14). It sits fourth because the ride is long and the deal is modest. Air France's Paris Stopover, launched July 22, 2026, offers 1 to 4 nights on connections of 27 hours or more, but sells paid packages and does not say the stop is free. Leave from about 8 hours. Under that, use YOTELAIR in Terminal 2E.
Schiphol has one of the quickest rides on the list, the NS train to Amsterdam Centraal in 17 minutes for $6.20 (£4.60; €5.50), and nonstops from all 15 of our US and UK airports. A 6-hour connection buys a canal walk from Dam Square through the Nine Streets. It loses ground on deals: we found no KLM stopover program and no free tour, so that factor scores 0. KLM asks you back 3 hours before an intercontinental flight, which is why 6 hours is the realistic minimum. YOTELAIR in Lounge 2 covers an overnight without passport control.
Taipei earns sixth place with the free half-day tours run by Taiwan's Tourism Administration for 7 to 24 hour layovers: Tamsui in the morning, Dadaocheng, Liberty Square and Ximending in the afternoon, a night market in the evening, 18 seats each. The Airport MRT Express reaches Taipei Main Station in 36 minutes for $4.90 (£3.70; NT$160). Connections hold it back: six US hubs and one UK airport, Heathrow, fly nonstop. We could not verify the airside facilities, so the airport scores 5. Submit the online Taiwan Arrival Card before you fly.
Zurich has the fastest ride into town of any hub: about 10 minutes by train to Zürich HB for $8.50 (£6.40; CHF 7). A 6-hour connection leaves about three hours for Lindenhof, the Fraumünster's Chagall windows and the lake, and all 15 of our US and UK airports fly nonstop. It sits seventh because the payoff, a fine Old Town with no single headline sight, scores 7, and we could not verify any SWISS stopover offer. The airside Transit Hotel at Gates D is closed November 9 to 22, 2026.
Frankfurt's S-Bahn reaches the Hauptbahnhof in 12 minutes for $7.70 (£5.80; €6.90), and all ten of our US hubs fly there nonstop. The payoff keeps it eighth: the Römerberg, the cathedral and a green-sauce lunch at the Kleinmarkthalle make a good half day, not a headline one, and score 6.5. There is no stopover deal here; Lufthansa's 2026 program runs in Munich. Fraport asks non-Schengen passengers to be back three hours early. Airside, MY CLOUD rents rooms by the hour at Gate Z25 for non-Schengen connections.
Tokyo's score hides two airports. From Haneda, the Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa in 11 minutes for $2.10 (£1.60; ¥330) and Asakusa in 34, which earns a perfect ride score and a payoff of 9. From Narita, the Skyliner to Ueno takes 41 minutes and costs $16.30 (£12.20; ¥2,580), so you need about 9 hours. That split makes the verdict conditional, which costs 0.3 points, and we found no free stopover from ANA or JAL. Never plan a short connection that switches airports: Haneda puts the train between them at about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Istanbul has the best deals of any hub: Touristanbul's free tours for 6 to 24 hour connections, and the Turkish Airlines Stopover, a free 4-star night in Economy (two if your first departure is from the US) on planned stops of 20 hours or more. The ride sinks it. The Havaist bus to Taksim averages 90 minutes, which scores 1 out of 10, and Turkish Airlines wants you back 3 hours before international departures, so on your own you need about 12 hours. Know that Touristanbul shows most sites from outside, with no museum entries.
Incheon scores 8.5 for staying airside: a transit hotel in Terminal 2, free nap zones and a free K-Culture Zone with hanbok try-ons in the T1 transit lounge. The airport also runs transit tours for layovers of 24 hours or less, such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and Insadong for a $3 (£2.20) entry. The AREX Express takes 43 minutes to Seoul Station, and only Heathrow flies nonstop from the UK. Entry scores 7 because K-ETA, waived through December 31, 2026, returns for US travelers on January 1, 2027 at $7.50 (£5.60; ₩10,000).
From 7.5 h 45 min into town Free stopover on your ticket
Keflavík ranks twelfth because the city is far and the reward is modest. The Flybus to BSÍ takes about 45 minutes and costs $33 (£25; ISK 3,999) one way, and Icelandair calls three hours a good return buffer, so you need about 9 hours for Reykjavík. With 6 to 8 hours, the Blue Lagoon, 12 miles (20 km) from the airport, is the better trip. The Icelandair Stopover lifts the deal score: 1 to 7 nights in Iceland on a transatlantic ticket with no additional airfare. There is no transit hotel.
Heathrow ties Keflavík at 6.4. London is the payoff, scored 8.5: the Elizabeth line reaches Tottenham Court Road in 33 minutes for $21 (£15.50), a walk from the free National Gallery. Two things pull it down. US passport holders need a UK ETA, $27 (£20), bought before flying, and Heathrow asks connecting passengers who leave to be back three hours before a long-haul departure. We found no British Airways or Virgin Atlantic stopover program, and there is nowhere to sleep airside. Leave from about 9 hours.
On its own numbers Dubai would score 7.8. Emirates' Dubai Connect is one of the strongest deals here: a free hotel, meals, transfers and a 48-hour visa on eligible 6 to 26 hour connections, and the Red Line starts at Terminals 1 and 3. It ranks 14th because the US State Department rates the UAE Level 3, Reconsider travel, citing terrorism and armed conflict, and our method takes 1.5 points from any hub at that level. The verdict is also conditional. If you do go in, the Creek souks and an abra crossing fit a 6-hour layover.
Without the advisory adjustment Doha would score 7.1. Hamad scores 9 for staying airside: the Orchard indoor garden, a 25-meter pool and the Oryx Airport Hotel in the transit area. The Red Line reaches Msheireb in about 15 minutes, and a full day of rides costs at most $1.60 (£1.20; QAR 6). It ranks last because the US rates Qatar Level 3, Reconsider travel, for the risk of armed conflict, which costs 1.5 points. US passport holders also pay $21 (£15.70) for a visa on arrival, and Qatar's stopover hotels are discounted, not free.
Every hub gets a Layover Score out of 10 from six factors. Easy to leave counts 20%: no visa scores 10, an online authorization such as the UK ETA 7, a visa on arrival 5, averaged across the US and UK passports. The ride into town counts 20%, from 10 points at 20 minutes down to 1 point at 75 minutes or more. The payoff in town counts 25% and staying airside 10%; those two are editorial. Stopover deals count 15%: a free hotel scores 10, a free stop of several days 7, discounts 4, and a free transit tour lifts any hub to at least 8. The last 10% counts how many of our 10 US and 5 UK hub airports fly there nonstop.
Both score 8.5, and Lisbon leads by three hundredths of a point before rounding. Both hubs are easy to leave and both score 9 for the payoff. Lisbon gains on the ride, about 20 minutes on the metro against 24 on the Airport Express, and on connections: 13 of our 15 US and UK airports fly to Lisbon nonstop, against 8 for Hong Kong. Hong Kong gains on the deal, because its free airport tours score 8 against 7 for TAP's free stopover, and on the terminal, 6.5 against 3.5.
So the two do different jobs. Lisbon is the better short hop into a city. Hong Kong is the better long connection if you want a guided tour without planning one. If your plan is to stay inside, neither wins: pick Singapore Changi.
Why Doha and Dubai sit at the bottom
Our method takes 1.5 points from any hub where the US State Department advises Level 3, "Reconsider travel", or higher. Two hubs carry it. The State Department rates Qatar Level 3 "due to risk of armed conflict" (issued August 28, updated October 1, 2026), and the United Arab Emirates Level 3 "due to terrorism and armed conflict" (issued August 29, updated September 17, 2026). Both advisories cite the threat of drone and missile attacks since US-Iran hostilities began in February 2026, and significant flight disruption. The UK's FCDO reports Iranian strikes in Qatar since July 8, 2026.
The reasoning is simple. A layover trip is optional, and a ranking should not push readers into town where their own government advises them to reconsider. Without the adjustment, Dubai would score 7.8 and Doha 7.1, both inside the top eleven. The adjustment is not a verdict on either airport: Hamad scores 9 for staying airside, and you do not pass immigration to use it. If an advisory drops below Level 3, the adjustment no longer applies. Read both governments' advice on the day you fly; British readers should check the FCDO pages, which our score does not use.
Which hub suits your connection
About 6 hours: pick a hub with a ride under 25 minutes. Zurich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Hong Kong and Tokyo via Haneda all work. Paris needs about 8 hours, and Heathrow and Keflavík about 9.
A free guided tour: Istanbul (Touristanbul, 6 to 24 hours), Singapore (5.5 to 24 hours), Hong Kong (more than 7 hours), Taipei (7 to 24 hours) and Seoul Incheon (24 hours or less).
A free hotel: Turkish Airlines on planned stops of 20 hours or more, and Emirates' Dubai Connect on eligible 6 to 26 hour connections.
Free extra days, hotel at your cost: TAP in Lisbon (up to 10 days) and Icelandair in Iceland (1 to 7 nights).
Sleeping airside: Changi, Hamad, Haneda Terminal 3, Istanbul, Schiphol, CDG 2E, Frankfurt, Zurich and Incheon Terminal 2 have transit hotels or cabins. Heathrow, Hong Kong, Lisbon and Keflavík do not.
Entry rules that change the math
US and UK passports can leave the airport at all 15 hubs, but four rules add time or cost. At Schengen airports (Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich, Lisbon, Keflavík), the Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, so your first entry includes fingerprints and a photo. ETIAS is not running yet and has no start date; its fee will be $22 (£16.80; €20). US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20), to leave Heathrow. Korea's K-ETA is waived for US passports through December 31, 2026 and required again from January 1, 2027. In Doha, the State Department lists a $21 (£15.70) visa on arrival for US citizens.
Singapore and Taiwan want a free online arrival card before you land. The full table is in our transit visa rules guide.
Before you leave the airport
Check that your bags are checked through to your final destination. On two separate tickets you are not a connecting passenger: you collect bags, check in again and clear security, which eats an hour or more. Respect the return buffer your airline or airport publishes. KLM, Turkish Airlines, Icelandair and Heathrow all ask for about three hours before a long-haul departure.
Some details expire soon. Taiwan's $18.40 (£13.80; NT$600) transit gift vouchers end October 31, 2026, as does Cathay Pacific's 20% Airport Express discount. Touristanbul's evening Bosphorus tour runs April 1 to October 31 only. Zurich's airside Transit Hotel is closed November 9 to 22, 2026. For a full day in one of these cities, see the best cities for a 24-hour trip.

Frequently asked questions
Which airport is best for a long layover?
Singapore Changi, if you want to stay inside: free snooze lounges, airside transit hotels with a rooftop pool and a free 2.5-hour city tour for layovers of 5.5 to 24 hours. Hamad in Doha also scores 9 for staying airside. If you want to leave, Lisbon and Hong Kong give the best reward for the shortest ride.
Which airlines give you a free hotel on a layover?
Turkish Airlines gives a free hotel on planned Istanbul stops of 20 hours to 7 days on eligible round trips, and its Hotel Desk covers unplanned connections of 12 hours or more in Economy. Emirates' Dubai Connect covers eligible 6 to 26 hour connections. TAP and Icelandair give free extra days, but you pay for the room. Details are in our free stopover programs guide.
Can I leave the airport on a layover without a visa?
At all 15 hubs on this page, US and UK passport holders can leave without a visa bought in advance, with two exceptions to know. US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20), to leave Heathrow, and pay $21 (£15.70) for a visa on arrival in Doha, according to the State Department. Korea's K-ETA returns for US passports on January 1, 2027.
Is it safe to leave the airport in Doha or Dubai in 2026?
We do not judge that for you. The US State Department rates both Qatar and the UAE Level 3, Reconsider travel, citing the risk of armed conflict (and terrorism for the UAE), and the UK's FCDO reports Iranian strikes in Qatar since July 8, 2026. Our ranking takes 1.5 points from both hubs for that reason. Read both advisories on the day you fly.
How long a layover do you need to leave the airport?
About 6 hours at hubs with a short train ride: Zurich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Hong Kong and Tokyo via Haneda. About 8 hours at Paris CDG, 9 at Heathrow, Keflavík and Narita, and 12 at Istanbul if you go without a Touristanbul tour. Most of the difference is the return buffer: three hours at Heathrow, Schiphol and Istanbul.
