Doha Layover

Metro to Msheireb: about 15 min Day of metro: max $1.60 (£1.20) US advisory: Level 3 (2026)

Hamad International Airport (DOH) is about 5 miles (7.7 km) from central Doha, and the Doha Metro Red Line starts at Terminal 1. In normal times that makes Doha an easy layover: a short ride to Msheireb, then a walk to Souq Waqif and the Corniche.

2026 is not normal. Hostilities between the United States and Iran began on February 28, 2026, and the US State Department rates Qatar Level 3, Reconsider Travel (issued August 28, updated October 1, 2026), citing the threat of drone and missile attacks and significant flight disruption. The UK's FCDO says there have been Iranian strikes in Qatar since July 8, 2026. Read the current advisories on the day you fly. Doha has no city page on this site, so below you get compact 6-, 12- and 24-hour plans with named places.

Can you leave Doha airport on a layover?

UK passports: visa-free entry. Visit Qatar, the national tourism site, says your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from arrival and lists a confirmed hotel booking on arrival as a condition.

US passports: visa on arrival. Visit Qatar says US citizens get a multiple-entry visa valid two years (or until the passport expires), with stays of up to 90 days, a passport valid 3 months and a confirmed hotel booking. The State Department lists the fee as $21 (£15.70) and says Qatar does not accept the 12-page emergency passport. Pay by card at the immigration counter; cash goes to a bank counter first, with a processing fee.

The hotel-booking condition is the awkward part of a same-day visit; we could not confirm how strictly it is applied to a few hours in town. A Discover Qatar hotel or transit tour booking covers it. To leave, do not follow the Arrivals signs from your gate: Hamad tells transfer passengers to go to a transfer desk first, which can arrange the exit. You do not need any visa if you stay inside the airport.

How long a layover do you need in Doha?

The fixed pieces: the transfer desk and immigration on arrival; about 15 minutes on the metro to Msheireb (five stops at Visit Qatar's three-minute average), with trains every 6 minutes; then the return. Hamad says check-in closes 60 minutes before departure and gates close 20 minutes before, but you also clear exit immigration and security, so plan to be back two hours before your flight.

  • Under 5 hours: stay inside. Hamad is better than most cities' airports at this.
  • 6 hours: two to three hours at Souq Waqif and the Corniche.
  • 12 hours: add the National Museum and a long dinner.
  • 24 hours: book a Discover Qatar stopover hotel and see Katara or West Bay.

Two Doha-specific traps. The metro shuts on Friday mornings for prayers, as do many museums and sights. And the regional situation can close airspace at short notice, the FCDO warns, so keep the time buffer generous and your phone charged.

Getting into Doha from the airport

Metro: Hamad International Airport T1 station is on the Red Line. Ride five stops to Msheireb, the interchange for all three lines, or change there to the Gold Line for Souq Waqif and the National Museum stations. Buy a travel card at the station machines and tap in and out; Visit Qatar says a full day of travel costs at most $1.60 (£1.20; QAR 6). Carriages come in Standard, Family and Goldclub classes.

Taxi: Karwa taxis, run by Mowasalat, leave from the Taxi Pavilion at the left end of the Arrivals Hall and take cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Hamad publishes no fixed fare, and the airport asks you to use only the pavilion's authorized taxis. Ride-hailing apps work too.

Six hours in Doha: Souq Waqif and the Corniche

Take the Red Line to Msheireb and the Gold Line one stop to Souq Waqif, the rebuilt market of spice stalls, falcon shops and cafes. Eat there: grilled meat and Qatari dishes at the souq's restaurants, or karak tea from a stall. Walk to the Corniche for the view across the bay, and on to the Museum of Islamic Art, I.M. Pei's building on its own island, with MIA Park beside it. Check the museum's hours before you go; then ride back from Souq Waqif or Msheireb.

Twelve hours: add the National Museum and Msheireb

With seven or eight hours in town, add the National Museum of Qatar, Jean Nouvel's desert-rose building, at the Gold Line's National Museum station. Walk through Msheireb Downtown, the rebuilt quarter around the interchange station, and stay at Souq Waqif for dinner after dark, when the market is busiest. In summer, do the walking in the evening and the museums in the heat of the day.

Twenty-four hours: Katara and West Bay

With a full day, book a stopover hotel through Discover Qatar and ride the Red Line north to Katara, the cultural village with an amphitheater and beach, or to West Bay for the skyline. The tram from Legtaifiya serves Lusail. Spend the evening on the Corniche or back at Souq Waqif. For how Doha compares with other hubs for a full day, see the best stopover cities.

Qatar Airways stopover packages and transit tours

Qatar Stopover packages, sold by Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways' tourism arm, were on sale when we checked on October 21, 2026, with no suspension notice. They are discounted hotels, not free ones, for Qatar Airways, codeshare and oneworld ticket holders with 12 to 96 hours in Doha:

  • Standard (4-star): from $14.30 (£10.70; QAR 52) per person per night, double occupancy.
  • Premium (5-star): from $24 (£18.10; QAR 88); with beach access, from $31 (£23; QAR 113).
  • Luxury (5-star with breakfast): from $84 (£63; QAR 304).

Transit tours: Discover Qatar sells paid city and desert tours for transits of 6 hours or more, bookable online or at the desk in Duty Free Plaza South, behind the escalators. There is no free tour. Discover Qatar says it refunds the tour if authorities refuse entry to a passenger who meets the visa rules. Compare the programs in our free stopover programs guide and the entry rules in our transit visa guide.

Staying inside Hamad International

This is where Doha shines. The Oryx Airport Hotel is inside the transit area at the South Plaza, next to the giant Lamp Bear sculpture, with 100 rooms, 24-hour check-in and free access for guests to the Vitality Wellbeing and Fitness Centre: a gym, a 25-meter pool and a squash court, open 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. The Oryx Garden Hotel has another 100 rooms at the North Node, and Sleepover pods and cabins sit at Gate C31 and in the South Plaza, from a 2-hour nap to a full night.

For free, walk the Orchard, an indoor tropical garden under a skylit roof, or rest in the separate quiet rooms for men, women and families. There are play areas for children, and the pool is open to transit passengers aged 5 and over.

Left luggage in Doha

Hamad's website lists no left-luggage service or price that we could find on October 21, 2026. Check your bags through to your final destination and carry only what you need into town. If you must store a bag, ask at an information desk on arrival before you leave the terminal.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for a layover in Doha?

Not if you stay in the airport. To leave, British citizens enter visa-free; US citizens get a visa on arrival, which the State Department lists at $21 (£15.70). Visit Qatar lists a confirmed hotel booking as a condition for both.

Is it safe to leave Doha airport in 2026?

The US State Department rates Qatar Level 3, Reconsider Travel, because of the US-Iran conflict that began February 28, 2026, and the FCDO reports Iranian strikes in Qatar since July 8. Read both advisories on the day you fly and decide for yourself.

Is 8 hours enough to leave Doha airport?

Yes, for Souq Waqif and the Corniche. The metro takes about 15 minutes to Msheireb, which leaves three to four hours in town after immigration and a two-hour return.

Does Qatar Airways give a free hotel on a layover?

Not as a stopover program: Discover Qatar packages are discounted, from $14.30 (£10.70; QAR 52) per person per night. Ask Qatar Airways about accommodation if the airline schedules you on a long connection with no shorter option.

Is there a free transit tour in Doha?

No. Discover Qatar's transit tours, for layovers of 6 hours or more, are paid. The desk is in Duty Free Plaza South.
