By April the weather gap between north and south has nearly closed. Every city in this top ten has an April weather score between 7.8 and 9.2, and nine of them get more than nine hours of sun a day. When the weather is this even, the other 60% of the score, how good one night in the city is, decides the order.
That favors Italy. Florence, Rome and Venice have three of the strongest 24-hour plans we rate, and they take the top three places. Below them is the closest race of the spring: Kraków, Prague, Vienna and Paris are separated by 0.06 of a point, and London is only 0.12 further back. Easter fell in March in 2027, so April is a calmer month to travel.

The ranking
Score = 40% this month’s weather + 60% the Snack Score, plus a market bonus in November and December for cities with a Christmas market. No more than 3 cities from one region. How we score
Florence's April score, 8.76, is its best of the spring. The weather is close to ideal for walking, a 67°F (19°C) high and 10.5 hours of sun, and the 24 hours are the strongest we rate in Europe: a Snack Score of 8.6 on a 3.2-mile (5.1 km) route. Lunch is at the Mercato Centrale and the evening at Piazzale Michelangelo. Buy the Uffizi ahead, $33 (£24; €29); on the day it is $28 (£21; €25) but you queue, and the ticket office shuts at 5:30 p.m. The hotel adds $6.70 (£5; €6) per person in tourist tax.
Rome is the sunniest city on this list in April, 10.8 hours a day, with a 67°F (20°C) high. Its weather score, 9.1, beats Florence's, but a Snack Score of 8.1 with a conditional verdict leaves it second. April is the month for its outdoor half: the Forum and the Palatine on the same $20 (£15.10; €18) ticket as the Colosseum, then Campo de' Fiori and the Pantheon, now $7.90 (£5.90; €7), or $2.20 (£1.70; €2) for 18 to 25-year-olds. Dinner is across Ponte Sisto in Trastevere.
Venice has the best April weather score here, 9.2: a 62°F (17°C) high, 9.2 rain days and 10.4 hours of sun. A worth-it verdict and a 2.5-mile route make it third. Stay the night for two reasons: the evening in Cannaregio after the day-trippers leave, and the access fee, which applies to day visitors on listed days from March 26, 2027. Book a Doge's Palace slot, since untimed tickets enter only from noon; from April it is open to 7 p.m. A 24-hour vaporetto pass is $28 (£21; €25).
Kraków leads the near tie for fourth on its Snack Score, 8.5, the second highest in Europe, and the cheapest night on the list, $50 (£37). Its weather is the weakest of the top ten, alongside Bruges, at 7.8: a 58°F (14.5°C) high and 12.1 rain days, the most here. The route is a compact 4.0 miles from Wawel to the Main Square to Kazimierz, with St. Mary's trumpet call every hour. A Kazimierz room was $61 (£46) in January and $77 (£58) in June.
Prague is 0.02 behind Kraków, with better April weather (8.5), a 59°F (15°C) high and 9.5 hours of sun, but a lower Snack Score. April is when the castle buildings return to a 5 p.m. close, which takes the rush out of the $21 (£15.50; CZK 450) circuit. The route is 3.0 miles, downhill from the castle through Malá Strana and over Charles Bridge. One night costs $58 (£43). From the US, only JFK has a nonstop.
Vienna has the best April weather north of the Alps, 8.9, with a 61°F (16°C) high and 8.9 rain days. It sits sixth, 0.04 behind Kraków, because its Snack Score is 7.7. The plan links the Innere Stadt, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, lunch at the Naschmarkt and Schönbrunn by U4, then dinner at Figlmüller. Its hotel prices are the most stable we found: $71 (£53) for January 15 and $78 (£58) for June 11, 2027, so an April room is unlikely to surprise you.
Paris is seventh on a strong April weather score, 8.7: a 61°F (16°C) high and 10.1 hours of sun. Its Snack Score, 7.8, carries a conditional verdict: one night means a timed Louvre slot and the river core, with Versailles and the Orsay left for another trip. Notre-Dame is free and opens at 7:45 a.m. on weekdays. The Louvre is $36 (£27; €32) for non-EEA adults and is closed on Tuesdays. On Saturday morning the plan climbs to Sacré-Cœur at 9 a.m. The hotel adds a city tax of $6.20 (£4.60; €5.53) per adult.
London is eighth, with a 58°F (14°C) high, 9.4 rain days and a weather score of 8.1. It has the best evening on the list, a 10 for after dark: a 5:45 p.m. table at Dishoom in Covent Garden leaves time for a 7:30 p.m. curtain. The day costs little to get around, with a Zones 1-2 daily cap of $11.90 (£8.90). The room is the catch: $115 (£86) on our January check and $186 (£139) on June's. It is a conditional pick, since one night covers one corridor, from Westminster to the West End.
Berlin has the fewest April rain days in this top ten, 8.4, and 9.9 hours of sun, for a weather score of 8.4. It is ninth because its Snack Score is 7.2: the route is 9.2 miles, the longest here, and leans on the U-Bahn. It is also the cheapest plan to follow. No stop charges entry; the Reichstag dome needs advance registration. The FEX from BER takes 23 minutes for $5.60 (£4.20; €5). Konnopke's Imbiss is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Bruges is tenth with a 57°F (14°C) high and 10.4 hours of sun, and April is the right month for its canals: boats run daily from March to October. Everything is within ten minutes on foot. The paid stops are the boat, $16.80 (£12.60; €15), De Halve Maan brewery, $17.90 (£13.40; €16), and the Belfry, best booked online. Expect a separate accommodation tax of $4.70 (£3.50; €4.20) per adult. The trip from London is 210 minutes by Eurostar with a change at Brussels.
We score April weather from the average daytime high, rain days and sunshine hours for 2016-2025, using Open-Meteo. Highs from 63°F to 79°F (17°C to 26°C) get full marks for temperature, so Florence and Rome, at 67°F (19°C), score full marks there while most northern cities, at 57°F to 61°F (14°C to 16°C), lose a little. That weather score is 40% of the April score; the Snack Score is the other 60%. Each region gets at most three places. See how we score cities.
Fourth to eighth is almost a tie
Kraków (8.22), Prague (8.2), Vienna (8.18), Paris (8.16) and London (8.04) are close enough that your own priorities should decide. Kraków wins on its Snack Score, 8.5, and its price. Vienna has the better weather, 8.9 against Kraków's 7.8, and the most stable hotel prices we found. Paris has the best food score of the five and ties London on sights, but has the longest route, 8.5 miles (13.7 km). London has the best evening.
So pick Paris over Kraków if you are coming from London and want to skip the airport: Eurostar takes 136 minutes. Pick Vienna over Prague if rain worries you: it has fewer rain days, 8.9 against 9.6. Pick Berlin, ninth, if you want a day with no entry tickets at all.
April dates and hours worth knowing
Longer hours start this month. Prague Castle's buildings stay open to 5 p.m. from April 1, an hour later than in winter. Venice's Doge's Palace closes at 7 p.m. from April to October instead of 6 p.m. Lisbon's castle has been open to 9 p.m. since March, and Tivoli in Copenhagen has been in its summer season since March 30, 2027.
Two dates need a decision. Venice's access fee for day-trippers applies on listed days between March 26 and August 15, 2027, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the city says the full 2027 rules will be published by December 31, 2026. Overnight guests have been exempt. And in Amsterdam, King's Day on April 27 fills the center with a street party, and the Anne Frank House keeps short hours that day; avoid it unless the party is the trip.
What April costs
We did not price an April Friday; our checks are January 15 and June 11, 2027, and April sits between them. The spread is large in some cities. Venice's cheapest qualifying room went from $71 (£53) in January to $168 (£126) in June, Florence's from $76 (£57) to $160 (£120), and Rome's from $111 (£83) to $203 (£152). Kraków ($61 (£46) to $77 (£58)) and Vienna ($71 (£53) to $78 (£58)) barely moved.
Entry tickets add more in Italy than elsewhere. Florence's dome pass and the Uffizi together are $66 (£50; €59) bought ahead; the Doge's Palace is $39 (£29; €35), or $34 (£25; €30) online at least 30 days ahead. Berlin's plan has no paid stop. For more on budgets, see cheap city breaks in Europe.
Why Spain and Portugal are missing
Not because they scored badly. Madrid (8.32), Lisbon (8.26), Porto (8.18) and Barcelona (8.1) would all be in this top ten on score, and Madrid would be fourth. They are out because the list takes no more than three cities from one region, and Florence, Rome and Venice fill Southern Europe's places. If you have done Italy, Madrid is the April pick. Budapest (8.12) lost to the same rule in Central Europe.
Further down, Copenhagen and Bath (7.44 each), Amsterdam (7.42) and York (7.4) were the next cities. All of Europe's ranked cities, month by month, are compared on the best European cities for 24 hours.
Getting there in April
From London, Paris (136 minutes) and Bruges (210 minutes, changing at Brussels) are train trips. Every other city here except London itself has nonstops from Heathrow or Gatwick. From the US, Rome, Paris and London have nonstops from all ten of our hubs and Venice from six, but Florence has none, so Americans fly to Rome or connect. Kraków's only US nonstops are from Chicago and Newark.
The Schengen Entry/Exit System has been in force since April 10, 2026, which means a fingerprint and photo check at your first border; ETIAS is not yet running and has no start date (fee $22 (£16.80; €20)). US passport holders need a UK ETA, $27 (£20), for London. The May ranking is next.
