24 Hours in Bath
Bath is small enough to see in a day and pretty enough to sleep in. The Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge and the Royal Crescent all sit along a walk of about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) from Bath Spa station to the Crescent. The evening belongs to Thermae Bath Spa, where the open-air rooftop pool is filled with naturally warm spring water and stays open until 9 p.m.
Come by train if you can. GWR's fastest Friday service from London Paddington took 73 minutes. A central 3-star room on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $78 (£58). Paid entries in the plan, the Roman Baths, the spa and the Abbey, total $106 (£80), so this is a cheap room and a dear day.

The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Roman Baths
The Roman bath complex and its museum, open daily from 9 a.m. Book a timed ticket online: advance prices are $2.70 (£2) less than on the day, and weekday prices are lower than weekends. Allow two hours.
- 12:15 p.m.
Lunch at the Guildhall Market
The covered market under a domed roof beside the Guildhall on High Street, trading for over 800 years. Open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; each stall keeps its own hours.
- 1:15 p.m.
Pulteney Bridge
A short walk from the market, the shop-lined bridge over the Avon and the weir below it. Free; cross and look back from Grand Parade.
- 2:00 p.m.
The Circus and the Royal Crescent
Walk uphill through the ring of townhouses at The Circus to the curve of the Royal Crescent above its lawn. Free from the street; take your time, this is the Bath of the postcards.
- 5:30 p.m.
Dinner at Sally Lunn's
A tea room and restaurant at 4 North Parade Passage, home of the Sally Lunn bun. The two-course set dinner is served daily from 5 p.m., and the house is open until 9 p.m.
- 7:00 p.m.
Thermae Bath Spa
A two-hour session in the naturally warm spring water, ending in the open-air rooftop pool over the city after dark. Monday to Friday is cheaper than the weekend; pools close at 9 p.m. Adults 16 and over only. The spa says walk-in places are not guaranteed, so book.
- 10:00 a.m.
Bath Abbey (Saturday)
Saturday morning, the fan-vaulted church next to the Roman Baths, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and only 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sundays. The ticket includes the Discovery Museum and a free 30-minute highlights tour.
The route is 1.6 miles (2.5 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Bath Abbey opens only 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sundays; Guildhall Market closed Sundays; Roman Baths and Thermae Bath Spa open daily (Roman Baths closed December 25 and 26)
How the 24 hours work
Two things need booking: a timed ticket for the Roman Baths and a spa session at Thermae. The Roman Baths open at 9 a.m. daily; a 10 a.m. slot leaves time to walk up from the station. Book online, where advance tickets are $2.70 (£2) cheaper than on the day. The spa says walk-in places are not guaranteed.
After the Baths, eat at the Guildhall Market, cross Pulteney Bridge, and walk uphill to The Circus and the Royal Crescent while the light is good. Come back down for an early dinner at Sally Lunn's at 5:30 p.m., then take a 7 p.m. spa session: two hours that end in the rooftop pool after dark. Saturday morning is Bath Abbey, next door to the Baths, before your train.
Know the weak days. The Abbey opens only from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sundays, and the Guildhall Market is closed on Sundays. The spa costs more at weekends. If it rains, the plan barely changes: the Baths, the market and the spa are all under a roof, and the rooftop pool is warm.
Where to stay for one night
We searched Bath on Kayak for two adults on a Friday, 3 stars or better, guest rating 8 or more, with taxes and fees, and checked every address against the map, because Kayak offers no neighborhood filter here:
- Saw Close, city center: The Z Hotel Bath was the cheapest qualifying room on both dates, $78 (£58) on January 15, 2027 and $160 (£120) on June 11, 2027. It is a few minutes on foot from the Abbey and the Roman Baths.
- Avon Street, by the river: Hampton by Hilton Bath City was $136 (£102) in January and $228 (£171) in June.
Some listings on the same search sit in villages outside Bath, so check the map before you book.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
Most visitors arrive by train at Bath Spa station, at the bottom of the center, a short walk from the Abbey. From London Paddington, GWR runs direct trains about every half hour; on the Friday we checked, the fastest took 73 minutes and the 9:30 a.m. took 75 minutes, with the lowest single from $83 (£62). Earlier peak trains were far dearer.
The nearest airport is Bristol, which has no rail link. The A4 Bath Airport Flyer runs hourly to Bath Bus Station, next to the train station; the 10 a.m. weekday departure arrives at 11:15 a.m. A single is $12.70 (£9.50) and a return $21 (£16). Zoom Cars is the airport's only official taxi operator, and it does not publish a fare to Bath.
What to eat in 24 hours
- A Sally Lunn bun at Sally Lunn's, 4 North Parade Passage, with sweet or savory toppings and a pot of tea, served from 10 a.m.
- The two-course set dinner at Sally Lunn's, $27 (£19.95), served daily from 5 p.m.
- Lunch from the Guildhall Market stalls on High Street, Monday to Saturday.
- Street food at Bath Christmas Market in season, from November 26 to December 13, 2026.

If you only have 12 hours
Keep the Roman Baths and the walk to the Royal Crescent, and choose between the spa and the Abbey. From London, the 9:30 a.m. train puts you in Bath at 10:45 a.m., which leaves room for the Baths, lunch, the Crescent and a two-hour spa session before an evening train back.

We used the advance weekday price for September and October 2026, $35 (£26); from November 1 to December 18, 2026 it is $31 (£24), and 2027 prices were not yet published. A weekend spa session is $65 (£49). Coming by train, swap the airport row for your rail fare.
Getting there from the US and the UK
No US airport flies nonstop to Bristol. Fly to London and take the train from Paddington; pair the trip with 24 hours in London. US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20) on GOV.UK, valid two years.
Within the UK, easyJet flies to Bristol from Edinburgh; there are no flights from London or Manchester, and the train is quicker anyway. For more short rail trips, see the best one-night breaks from London; for a northern alternative by rail, see York, or Edinburgh for a longer ride.
When to go
Winter is the bargain: our January room was under half the June price, and a rooftop pool on a cold, dark evening is the point of the trip. Spring and early autumn suit the walk to the Crescent best. Bath Christmas Market runs from November 26 to December 13, 2026, open until 8 p.m. Thursday to Saturday; see our Christmas list and the best city breaks for couples.

Where Bath ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Bath: Walking Tour with Qualified Blue Badge Tourist Guide
One line on the page lists Roman Baths entry, but nothing else on the page supports it; treat it as an outside walking tour and buy Roman Baths tickets separately. The same operator sells this tour on Viator.
Rating as shown on GetYourGuide

Bath: Roman Baths Entry Ticket with Audio Guide
Non-refundable. Last entry is one hour before closing. For 1 September to 31 October 2026 the Roman Baths' own site lists adult online prices of GBP 26.50 weekdays and GBP 29 weekends (about $35 and $39), so the $31 from-price seen here is probably a cheaper date; compare on your day.

Bath: Guided Ghost Tour
Guide only; no drinks included. Starts and ends in the centre, so it works after dinner on a one-night stay.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough in Bath?
Yes. The Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge and the Royal Crescent are all within a short walk, and a two-hour spa session fills the evening. A second day would add the smaller museums and a walk in the hills above the city.
Do you need to book the Roman Baths in advance?
It is strongly advised. Advance tickets are $2.70 (£2) cheaper than on the day, and weekdays cost less than weekends. In September and October 2026 a weekday advance adult ticket is $35 (£26).
How much is Thermae Bath Spa?
A two-hour Thermae Welcome session with towel and robe is $59 (£44) Monday to Friday and $65 (£49) at weekends. The minimum age is 16. The pools close at 9 p.m., and the spa recommends booking ahead.
How do you get from Bristol Airport to Bath?
Take the A4 Bath Airport Flyer, which runs hourly to Bath Bus Station in about 75 minutes. A single is $12.70 (£9.50) and a return $21 (£16). There is no train from the airport.
How long is the train from London to Bath?
GWR's direct trains from Paddington to Bath Spa take 73 to 84 minutes on a weekday, with departures about every 30 minutes.
