24 Hours in Washington, DC
Washington is the rare capital where the airport is closer than the suburbs. Reagan National has its own Metro station at the end of a covered walkway, and on the live WMATA departure board a Yellow Line train reaches Gallery Place-Chinatown in 14 minutes, Archives in 12.
Almost everything worth seeing is free. The catch is the ticketing. The Capitol, the Library of Congress, the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Washington Monument all use timed entry, and the monument's tickets often go the moment they are released. Book those four and the day runs itself: Capitol Hill in the morning, the Mall in the afternoon, the Lincoln Memorial as the lights come on, and a late dinner downtown. The only paid entry is the monument's $1 (£0.70) reservation fee.

The 24-hour plan
- 8:30 a.m.
U.S. Capitol tour, Capitol Visitor Center

- 10:15 a.m.
Library of Congress, Thomas Jefferson Building
Across First Street by tunnel or on foot. The Great Hall and the Main Reading Room overlook. Free timed-entry tickets are required; they open 30 days ahead, with same-day tickets released online at 9 a.m.
- 11:45 a.m.
Lunch at Market Lunch, Eastern Market
Walk down Pennsylvania Avenue SE to the market hall at 225 7th Street SE. The Market Lunch counter serves a crab cake platter with two sides and closes at 2:30 p.m. on Fridays.
- 1:30 p.m.

Blue, Orange or Silver Line from Eastern Market to Smithsonian, then walk past the Monument grounds. Start in the history galleries below ground and work up. Free timed-entry passes are required.
- 4:00 p.m.
Washington Monument
Next door. The elevator to the top needs a timed ticket: $1 online at Recreation.gov, released 30 days ahead at 10 a.m., or free same-day tickets from the Lodge on 15th Street, which usually run out.
- 5:15 p.m.
Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial
Walk west past the World War II Memorial and the length of the Reflecting Pool. The memorials are open 24 hours, and in winter you arrive as the lights come on.
- 7:30 p.m.
Dinner at Old Ebbitt Grill
Walk or ride back across the Ellipse to 675 15th Street NW, a block from the White House. Raw-bar oysters and a long bar; the kitchen runs until 1 a.m. Book a table for a Friday.
- 10:00 p.m.
A half-smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl, U Street
Green or Yellow Line three stops from Gallery Place to U Street. The original counter at 1213 U Street NW is open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; order the half-smoke with mustard, onions and chili.
- 10:00 a.m.
National Archives Museum (Saturday)
Saturday morning, see the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in the Rotunda. Free; a $1 timed ticket skips the line. Archives station is across Pennsylvania Avenue for the Yellow Line back to the airport.
The route is 7.8 miles (12.5 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Capitol tours Monday to Saturday only (closed Sundays); Library of Congress Jefferson Building closed Sundays and Mondays; Eastern Market and Market Lunch closed Mondays; Washington Monument closed one day a month for maintenance; African American history museum opens at noon on Mondays
How the 24 hours work
The route runs east to west along the Mall. You start at the Capitol Visitor Center, which opens at 8:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday, cross to the Library of Congress, walk down to Eastern Market for lunch, then take one Metro ride to Smithsonian. From there it is all on foot: the African American history museum, the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial and the Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial. Dinner is at Old Ebbitt Grill, and the late stop is Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street.
Book in this order. Washington Monument tickets on Recreation.gov are released 30 days ahead at 10 a.m. and sell out fast; a second batch appears the day before. Library of Congress tickets are free and also open 30 days ahead, with same-day tickets online at 9 a.m. The Capitol recommends a reservation but takes walk-ins on the next free tour; arrive by 2:30 p.m. if you have none. The African American history museum needs a free timed pass.
The closing days decide which Friday or Saturday works. The Library of Congress is closed Sundays and Mondays, Capitol tours do not run on Sundays, and Eastern Market is closed Mondays. The monument also closes one day a month for maintenance; the National Park Service posts the dates a year ahead. If it rains, swap the monument for the free National Museum of Natural History, which needs no pass.
2026 is the country's 250th anniversary, and the Capitol Visitor Center's exhibition Spirit of '76 stays up until April 10, 2027, so it is on the morning route.
Where to stay for one night
We searched Kayak for two adults on a Friday, total price with all taxes and fees, 3 stars or better and a guest rating of 8 or more, around Penn Quarter:
- Penn Quarter: Motto by Hilton Washington DC Downtown was the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027, at $117 (£88), rated 8.4. Gallery Place station, the end of your airport ride, is in the same neighborhood. In June the Westin Washington DC Downtown and the Washington Marriott at Metro Center were both $243 (£182).
- Dupont Circle: in June, the Holiday Inn Washington-Central/White House had the cheapest qualifying room at $207 (£155) on June 11, 2027. In January the Courtyard Dupont Circle was $125 (£94).
- Downtown, by the White House: the Residence Inn Washington DC Downtown was $227 (£170) in June, a short walk from Old Ebbitt Grill.
The Henley Park in Mount Vernon Square, just north of our area, was $112 (£84) in January.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
Follow the signs for the Metro along the covered walkways. Take a Yellow Line train toward Greenbelt or Mt Vernon Sq: 10 minutes to L'Enfant Plaza, 12 to Archives and 14 to Gallery Place-Chinatown. Blue Line trains toward Largo take 18 minutes to Metro Center.
Weekday fares from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. run from $2.25 to $6.75 (£1.70–£5.10) by distance; after 9:30 p.m. and at weekends they are $2.25–$2.50 (£1.70–£1.90). The 1-Day Pass is $13.50 (£10.10), but it expires at the end of the operating day, not 24 hours after first use, so buy it on Friday and pay as you go on Saturday.
Reagan National's taxi page could not be read when we checked, so we do not quote a fare. If you land at Dulles instead, the Silver Line reaches downtown, and the station is about 600 feet, a 7 to 8 minute walk, from the main terminal. By train, Amtrak arrives at Union Station, one Red Line stop from Gallery Place.
What to eat in 24 hours
- A crab cake platter at Market Lunch, inside Eastern Market at 225 7th Street SE: $27 (£20) with two sides and bread, or $39 (£29) for two crab cakes. Fridays 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Blueberry buckwheat pancakes at the same counter, a weekend breakfast special, if your plan runs Saturday to Sunday instead.
- Oysters at Old Ebbitt Grill, 675 15th Street NW, open until 2 a.m. with the kitchen serving until 1 a.m.
- The original half-smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl, 1213 U Street NW: a pork and beef sausage on a steamed bun with mustard, onions and chili. Open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Ben's and Old Ebbitt did not publish prices on their own sites when we checked. For cities where the food is the whole trip, see the best food cities for 24 hours.
If you only have 12 hours
Keep the Mall. Take the Metro to Smithsonian, see the African American history museum or the free Natural History Museum, walk to the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, and eat at Old Ebbitt Grill. Drop Capitol Hill and Eastern Market. Reagan National is about 4 miles (6 km) from the center in a straight line, and the Yellow Line from Archives gets you back in 12 minutes, so an evening flight still leaves time for the memorials.
What 24 hours costs
| Item | January | June |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel, one night (whole room) | $117 (£88) | $207 (£155) |
| Metro 1-Day Pass, Friday (includes the airport ride) | $13.50 (£10.10) | $13.50 (£10.10) |
| Saturday Metro back to the airport (weekend fare, at most) | $2.50 (£1.90) | $2.50 (£1.90) |
| Washington Monument reservation fee | $1 (£0.70) | $1 (£0.70) |
| Total | $134 (£100) | $224 (£168) |
Food is extra. Every other stop in the plan is free, which makes Washington one of the cheapest days in this guide once the room is paid for. Compare it with Philadelphia, where the history sights are also mostly free.
Getting there from the US and the UK
Every US hub on our list outside Washington flies nonstop to Reagan National, Dulles or Baltimore/Washington: JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. From New York the train is faster door to door: the quickest Acela on Amtrak's timetable dated October 20, 2026, takes 2 hours 55 minutes from Moynihan Train Hall to Union Station. See the best overnight trips from New York, or pair this with 24 hours in New York and Boston along the same line.
From the UK, Dulles has nonstops from Heathrow on British Airways, United and Virgin Atlantic, and United flies from Edinburgh; British Airways also flies Heathrow to Baltimore/Washington. British passport holders need an approved ESTA. CBP charges $10.62 (£8) to process it and $30 (£22) more if it is approved, about $41 (£30) in all; our entry rules guide explains how to avoid third-party sites.
When to go
Winter is the cheap season, and short days put the Lincoln Memorial under lights by late afternoon. Spring brings the cherry blossoms, and the Park Service warns that monument tickets then sell out almost immediately. Summer is hot and humid and doubles the price of a central room, as our June figure shows. In December there are two markets: the DowntownDC Holiday Market on F Street NW in Penn Quarter from November 13 to December 23, 2026, and the DC Holiday Market on New Hampshire Avenue at Dupont Circle from November 12 to December 23.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get from Reagan National Airport to downtown DC?
Take the Metro. The station is connected to the terminals by covered walkways, and a Yellow Line train reaches Gallery Place-Chinatown in about 14 minutes. Weekday fares are $2.25–$6.75 (£1.70–£5.10) depending on distance.
Do you need tickets for the Washington Monument?
Yes, for everyone aged 2 and up. Advance tickets cost a $1 (£0.70) fee on Recreation.gov and are released 30 days ahead at 10 a.m. Free same-day tickets are handed out at the Lodge on 15th Street from 8:45 a.m., and they usually run out.
Can you tour the US Capitol without a reservation?
Yes. Staff put walk-in visitors on the next available tour, and recommend arriving by 2:30 p.m. The last tour is at 3:20 p.m., Monday to Saturday. A reservation is still the safer choice on a busy day.
Is the Library of Congress free to visit?
Yes, but you need a free timed-entry ticket for the Thomas Jefferson Building. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and closed Sundays and Mondays.
How much is a Metro day pass in Washington, DC?
The 1-Day Unlimited Pass is $13.50 (£10.10) for Metrorail and Metrobus, and the 3-Day Pass is $34 (£25). The 1-Day Pass ends with the operating day, so it does not carry over to the next morning.
Is one day enough in Washington, DC?
For the Capitol, one Smithsonian museum and the monuments, yes, if you book the timed tickets. Georgetown and Arlington need a second day.
