Singapore Layover

No visa for US or UK passports Free 2.5-hour city tour MRT: about 40 min downtown

Changi is the easiest long layover in Asia. US and UK passport holders walk out without a visa, the airport runs its own free 2.5-hour city tour for connections of 5.5 to 24 hours, and the MRT reaches Raffles Place in 35 to 45 minutes for a fare of about two Singapore dollars.

This page is about the clock: what you can do with 6, 12 or 24 hours between flights, and when you are better off inside the terminal. If you are staying a night or more on purpose, our 24 hours in Singapore plan has the full timed route.

Minimum layover to leave the airport: 7.5 hours (7 h 05 min, rounded up). Add an hour if you check a bag through security again or connect between terminals.

Singapore Airlines recommends arriving three hours early at Changi, especially with bags to check; counters close 40 minutes before departure

Can you leave the airport on a layover?

Yes. The US State Department says US citizens need no visa for stays of 90 days or less, with six months of passport validity beyond departure. The UK Foreign Office says British passport holders need no visa for tourism, and that the permitted stay, usually 30 to 90 days, is set by the immigration officer.

Both nationalities must submit the SG Arrival Card online within three days before arrival. It is free and it is not a visa: Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority emails your visit pass instead of stamping your passport. Do the card before you board your first flight, because Changi's free tour has you clear immigration once, and the card is part of that.

If you never leave the transit area you need nothing at all. Our transit visa guide compares the rules at all 15 hubs.

How long a layover do you need?

Build it backward from the departure gate. Singapore Airlines recommends arriving three hours before departure, especially if you have bags to check, and closes counters 40 minutes before. If your bags are checked through, you can cut that, but plan on two hours at the airport for security and the walk to your gate.

Changi's own tour schedule shows the airport's view of a safe margin: the 4 p.m. Singapore River tour ends at 6:30 p.m., and you may only join if your flight leaves after 8:30 p.m. You must also be at the booth 90 minutes before the tour starts. That is how the 5.5-hour minimum works.

Going alone, add the ride: about 40 minutes each way on the MRT, or about 30 minutes by taxi. With an hour to land and clear immigration, two to three hours back at the airport and 80 minutes of riding, a 7-hour layover gives you about two hours in town. Nine hours gives you a proper afternoon.

Getting into town and back

MRT. From Changi Airport station take the train one stop to Tanah Merah, then change to the East West Line toward Tuas Link. Raffles Place and City Hall take 35 to 45 minutes and cost $1.60–$2.30 (£1.20–£1.80; S$2–S$3) by card, according to a 2026 cost guide; LTA's official distance table puts adult card fares for a ride of 17 to 20 km at $1.70 (£1.30; S$2.20) to $1.80 (£1.30; S$2.27). Tap a contactless bank card or phone at the gate. The first train to Tanah Merah is 5:31 a.m. (5:59 a.m. on Sundays) and the last connection west is 11:18 p.m.

Taxi. Changi estimates about 30 minutes and $19.60–$35 (£14.70–£26; S$25–S$45) on the meter, plus an airport surcharge of $4.70 (£3.50; S$6), or $6.30 (£4.70; S$8) from 5 p.m. to midnight. A 25% peak surcharge applies on weekday mornings and every evening, and a 50% midnight surcharge from midnight to 6 a.m. Two people with little time should take the taxi.

Note that LTA raises adult card fares by 12 to 13 cents per trip from December 26, 2026.

What to do with 6 hours

Take the Free Singapore Tour. With six hours you can fit one 2.5-hour bus tour, and the airport handles the timing. Pick by your arrival time: the Heritage and Culture tour runs 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., City Sights runs at noon and 6 p.m., the Singapore River and Marina Bay Sands tour at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Sentosa Discovery at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

If every tour is full, stay inside. Clear immigration only if you want Jewel, the landside mall linked to T1, for the Rain Vortex and the Canopy Park, which costs $6.30 (£4.70; S$8) for adults. Otherwise the T3 Butterfly Garden in the transit area is open 24 hours.

What to do with 12 hours

Twelve hours buys about seven hours in the city. Take the MRT to Raffles Place, then walk the Marina Bay waterfront past the Merlion to the Gardens by the Bay and its Supertree Grove. Cross back to Chinatown for lunch at Maxwell Food Centre, a hawker centre where chicken rice is the dish to order, then walk the shophouse streets around the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.

If your flight is late in the evening, end at Lau Pa Sat in the financial district, where satay stalls set up on Boon Tat Street after dark, and ride back from Raffles Place. Keep the last-train time in mind if you leave after 11 p.m.: a taxi is the fallback.

What to do with 24 hours

With a full day, check into a hotel downtown and follow our 24-hour Singapore plan. Leave the bags you do not need at Smarte Carte in the transit hall before you clear immigration, and take only a day pack.

If you would rather not move at all, an airside transit hotel turns an overnight connection into a full night's sleep without touching immigration. That range is why Singapore features in our best stopover cities ranking: every length of layover has a good option.

Free tours and stopover deals

Free Singapore Tour (Changi Airport). Open to transit and transfer passengers with 5.5 to 24 hours, whose checked bags go through to the final destination. Book one tour up to 50 days ahead online, or walk in at the booth in the T2 transit hall near Gate F50 or in T3 near Gates A1 to A8, open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. You may clear immigration only once, under-18s must travel with an adult, and the tours are not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. The page lists them as running daily, including weekends, in October 2026.

Singapore Stopover (Singapore Airlines). Book a multi-city ticket with a stop in Singapore and you get up to $15.60 (£11.70; S$20) in Changi transit e-vouchers. The page also lists hotel partners where you earn KrisFlyer miles and a Pelago discount on tours, but it no longer shows the fixed-price Singapore Stopover Holiday hotel packages the airline used to sell. Treat it as a small perk on a stop you were going to make anyway. Our stopover programs guide compares it with the free-hotel deals in the Gulf.

Staying airside: hotels, lounges and luggage

Changi publishes three airside hotel options. Changi Transit Hotel has rooms in the T1 and T3 transit areas, and the T1 hotel has a rooftop pool. The Ambassador Transit Hotel in T2 is being taken over by Changi Transit Hotel from November 3, 2026. JetQuay's sleeping suites cost $94 (£70; S$120) for the first six hours before 9% GST, but require JetQuay's paid service.

Free snooze lounges open 24 hours in every terminal's transit area, including the Sanctuary, Oasis and Pavilion lounges in T2. YOTELAIR in Jewel is landside, so you must clear immigration to use it.

Luggage. Smarte Carte runs 24-hour counters in all four transit halls and in Jewel, T2, T3 and T4 landside. A small item under 10 kg costs $8.60 (£6.40; S$11) per 24 hours and a large one $12.50 (£9.40; S$16). The free tour requires you to deposit wheeled cabin bags before you board.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for a layover in Singapore?

Not with a US or UK passport. US citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa, and British visitors are usually given 30 to 90 days. Both must submit the free SG Arrival Card within three days before arrival if they leave the airport.

Is the Changi free Singapore tour still running in 2026?

Yes. Changi's page lists seven daily departures of four 2.5-hour tours in October 2026, including weekends and public holidays. You need a layover of 5.5 to 24 hours, bags checked through, and a booking made up to 50 days ahead or a walk-in seat at the T2 or T3 transit booth.

Is 6 hours enough to leave Changi Airport?

Just, if you join the free tour, because the airport sets the timing. On your own, 7 hours is a more honest minimum: about 40 minutes each way on the MRT, an hour to land and clear immigration, and two to three hours back at the airport leaves about two hours downtown.

Can I sleep in Changi Airport without a hotel?

Yes. Free snooze lounges in the transit areas of T1, T2, T3 and T4 are open 24 hours. For a bed and a shower, the airside Changi Transit Hotel in T1 and T3 and the Ambassador Transit Hotel in T2 sell rooms by the block of hours.

Does Singapore Airlines give a free hotel on a stopover?

No. Its current Singapore Stopover offer gives up to $15.60 (£11.70; S$20) in Changi transit e-vouchers on a multi-city booking, plus miles with partner hotels. You pay for the room yourself.
