24 Hours in Budapest

Bus 100E: 40 min to Deák tér One night from $71 (£53) Széchenyi bath at dusk

Budapest is two cities facing each other across the Danube, and a 24-hour plan simply crosses the river twice. Pest, on the flat east bank, has the market, Parliament, the basilica and the nightlife. Buda, on the hills to the west, has the castle and Fisherman's Bastion. The Chain Bridge joins them, and everything in this plan is a walk or one metro stop from it.

It is a cheap night. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel with a guest score of 8 or more in Districts V and VII was $71 (£53) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, and $102 (£76) for Friday, June 11, 2027. The airport bus is $7.70 (£5.80; HUF 2,500), and the most expensive thing in the day is the Széchenyi thermal bath, which is worth the money as the last stop before dinner. Plan the bath for late afternoon in winter, when the steam rises off the outdoor pools as it gets dark.

    Free

The route is 6.6 miles (10.6 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Great Market Hall closed on Hungarian public holidays (including October 23) and open shorter hours on Saturdays (to 4 p.m.) and Sundays (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.); Széchenyi bath charges more on Fridays, weekends and holidays

How the 24 hours work

Start with breakfast at the Great Market Hall, open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Walk north along the river and cross the Chain Bridge to Buda. Climb to Buda Castle for the view, then walk through the Castle District to Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church, with Parliament directly across the water.

After lunch, cross back to Pest for the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial and St. Stephen's Basilica, then take metro line M1 to the Széchenyi thermal bath in City Park. The daily ticket with a locker is $46 (£34; HUF 14,800) on Fridays and weekends and $41 (£30; HUF 13,200) Monday to Thursday. Dinner is in the old Jewish Quarter around Gozsdu udvar, and the night ends at Szimpla Kert, the ruin bar on Kazinczy utca.

The plan bends around two things. The Great Market Hall closes on Hungarian public holidays, including October 23, so on those days eat breakfast at a cafe near Deák Ferenc tér instead. And if it rains, swap Fisherman's Bastion for longer at the bath, which is outdoors but warm. The Parliament interior is visited only on guided tours; we could not confirm 2026 prices, so the plan sees it from the river and from the Buda bank.

Where to stay for one night

Stay on the Pest side in District V, the old inner city along the river, or District VII, the old Jewish Quarter and nightlife district. We priced both on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with all taxes and fees in:

  • January 15, 2027: $71 (£53) at Star Hotel by Mellow Mood Hotels, a 3-star rated 8.3 in District VII.
  • June 11, 2027: $102 (£76) at City Hotel Matyas, a 3-star rated 8.2 in District V, close to the Great Market Hall end of the plan.

Kayak showed apartments with a 3-star class at $66 (£49) in January and $85 (£64) in June; we left them out because they are not hotels, but they are an option if you do not need a front desk. District VII is the better base if the evening matters most: Gozsdu udvar and Szimpla Kert are on your doorstep. District V is quieter and closer to the river.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

Bus 100E Airport Express runs around the clock between Budapest Airport and Deák Ferenc tér, the central hub where three metro lines meet, with a stop at Kálvin tér. BKK, the city's transport authority, puts the journey at 40 minutes and says buses run every 6 to 10 minutes on weekday daytimes, less often at night. You need the special airport shuttle single ticket, $7.70 (£5.80; HUF 2,500); tap a bank card on the reader by the driver to buy and validate it in one go. Ordinary tickets and the separate 200E bus do not mix with it.

If you already hold a Budapest pass, an add-on airport ticket costs $3.10 (£2.30; HUF 1,000) in the BudapestGO app. Inside the city, the 24-hour Budapest-travelcard is $8.50 (£6.30; HUF 2,750), against $1.50 (£1.20; HUF 500) for a single ride, and covers the M1 to the bath and back.

Taxis use one official metered tariff for every company. Since August 2026, an airport base fare of $6.50 (£4.80; HUF 2,100) applies to rides to and from the airport, on top of the distance and time charges. BKK advises ordering by app or phone and using only yellow cars marked as qualified Budapest taxis.

What to eat in 24 hours

Hungarian food is rich, red with paprika and easy to find. Five things to try:

  • Lángos at the Great Market Hall: fried dough with sour cream and grated cheese, from the stands on the upper gallery.
  • Paprika and salami from the ground floor: the market's stalls are the place to buy both to take home.
  • Goulash around Gozsdu udvar: the beef and paprika soup, at one of the restaurants in the courtyards between Király utca and Dob utca.
  • Chicken paprikash: the other classic, with small dumplings, on the same menus.
  • A drink at Szimpla Kert: the best-known ruin bar, on Kazinczy utca.

None of these places publishes fixed prices online, so we quote none.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the river. Walk from the Great Market Hall to the Chain Bridge, cross to Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion, come back to the Shoes on the Danube Bank, and finish with dinner in District VII. That loop is about 4 miles (6.5 km) with the climb to the castle. Drop the bath unless you have three hours to spare: the metro ride, changing and soaking take that long.

What 24 hours costs

ItemPrice
Hotel, one night, District VII, January 15, 2027$71 (£53)
Bus 100E in and out$15.40 (£11.50; HUF 5,000)
24-hour Budapest-travelcard$8.50 (£6.30; HUF 2,750)
Széchenyi bath, Friday daily ticket with locker$46 (£34; HUF 14,800)

On the ground that is $69 (£52; HUF 22,550) before food. With the January room, the total is $140 (£105); with the June room, $171 (£128). The bath has a cheaper early ticket, $32 (£24; HUF 10,500) Monday to Thursday if you enter before 9 a.m. See how that compares on our cheap city breaks ranking.

Getting there from the US and the UK

From the US, the airport's airlines table on Wikipedia lists no nonstop flights from any of the ten US hubs we track. You connect through a European hub, or fly nonstop to Vienna and continue by train. That is the main reason a US one-night trip to Budapest is harder than it looks.

From the UK, it is easy. British Airways flies from Heathrow, easyJet and Wizz Air from Gatwick (TUI in season), Jet2 and Ryanair from Manchester (TUI in season), and Ryanair from Edinburgh and Stansted. There is no train from London fast enough for one night.

Entry rules. US and UK citizens enter Hungary visa-free for short stays. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, so you register fingerprints and a photo on your first entry instead of getting a stamp. ETIAS is not yet required: the European Commission says it is not in operation, collects no applications and will announce a start date several months ahead. Its fee has been set at $22 (£16.80; €20).

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for a day spent walking both banks. Summer is hot in the city but long and light, and the ruin bars open their courtyards. Winter is cold, which is exactly when the outdoor pools at the Széchenyi bath are at their best. From November 13, 2026 to January 1, 2027, the Advent Bazilika Christmas market fills Szent István tér in front of the basilica, according to its organizers. See how it compares with Prague on our Christmas market city breaks list. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures.
