Istanbul Layover

Touristanbul: free from 6 hours Free hotel on 20-hour stopovers On your own: from about 12 hours

Istanbul Airport (IST) sits about 21 miles (34.5 km) northwest of the old city, near the Black Sea. That distance shapes every layover here. The Havaist bus to Taksim Square averages 90 minutes, and Turkish Airlines asks you to be back 3 hours before an international flight. On a short connection the city is out of reach on your own.

What makes Istanbul different is the airline. Turkish Airlines runs Touristanbul, free city tours for connections of 6 to 24 hours, and a Stopover program that pays for a hotel on planned stops of 20 hours or more. This page covers the airport, the clock and those programs. For a full night in the city, our 24 hours in Istanbul plan takes over.

Turkish Airlines asks passengers to arrive at least 3 hours before international departures from Istanbul Airport

Can you leave Istanbul Airport on a layover?

Yes. Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says ordinary US and UK passport holders are visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. There is no e-visa to buy and no fee for either passport. The UK government adds that your passport must be valid for at least 150 days after arrival, with one blank page. Türkiye is not in the Schengen area, so EES and ETIAS do not apply here.

If you stay airside, you never meet passport control: transfer passengers follow the transfer signs and go through a security check. To leave, you clear passport control on the Arrivals level. Turkish Airlines says reaching the Touristanbul desk, passport control included, takes about 45 minutes.

How long a layover do you need in Istanbul?

Build it from the fixed pieces. About 45 minutes from the gate through passport control to the Arrivals level. About 90 minutes on the Havaist bus to Taksim, or 110 minutes on the Sultanahmet line, each way. Then 3 hours before departure back at the airport, the time Turkish Airlines recommends for international flights.

  • Under 6 hours: stay airside.
  • 6 to 11 hours: book a Touristanbul slot that fits, or stay airside. On the bus, that overhead (about 6 hours and 15 minutes in all) leaves you little or no time in town.
  • 12 hours: about five and a half hours in the city by bus, more if you take the metro. Enough for Sultanahmet and a meal.
  • 20 hours or more: ask for the free Stopover hotel and sleep in town.

The 3-hour advice is generous for a passenger who already holds a boarding pass with no bags to drop, but IST is huge and security queues vary. Do not cut it below two hours.

Getting into Istanbul from the airport

Metro (fastest): the M11 runs from the airport station to Gayrettepe in about 30 minutes, where you change to the M2 for Taksim, or on to Şişhane for Galata. Pay with an Istanbulkart. On the February 16, 2026 tariff, a 7 to 8 station ride on the M11 costs $0.90 (£0.70; TRY 44) and the first transfer $0.60 (£0.50; TRY 31), about $1.50 (£1.10; TRY 75) to Taksim. The line is run by TCDD, not Metro Istanbul, so check its timetable for late arrivals.

Havaist bus: from transportation floor -2, line HVİST-16 to Taksim costs $9.50 (£7.10; TRY 470) and averages 90 minutes; Havaist also runs a line to Çatladıkapı near Sultanahmet that averages 110 minutes. Buses take cards. It is slower than the metro but door to door, with space for bags.

Taxi: on the 2026 tariff the meter starts at $1.30 (£1; TRY 65) and adds $0.90 (£0.70; TRY 44) per kilometer, so the 30-mile (48 km) road route to Taksim comes to about $43 (£33; TRY 2,156) before time in traffic and tolls. Allow about an hour, and longer at rush hour.

Six to eleven hours: take Touristanbul

On a 6- to 11-hour connection, the free tour is the only realistic way into the city. The Half Day Tour (8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., breakfast included) visits a different set of sights each day of the week: the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and Hagia Sophia from outside on most days, with Dolmabahçe Palace, Balat or a Golden Horn and Bosphorus cruise on others. The Evening Tour (4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) adds the Grand Bazaar (closed Sundays) and dinner. The early Sightseeing Tour (8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) is panoramic: you see Taksim, the Valens Aqueduct, the city walls and the Galata Bridge from the vehicle, with a photo stop.

Know what you get: most sites are seen from outside, with no museum entries. It is a taste, not a visit, and it is free.

Twelve hours on your own: Sultanahmet

With about five hours in town, go straight to Sultanahmet. See Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque facing each other across the square (both are working mosques: dress modestly and avoid prayer times), then the Basilica Cistern underground nearby. Walk to the Grand Bazaar (closed Sundays) and down through the Spice Bazaar to Eminönü for a fish sandwich by the Galata Bridge.

Take the T1 tram back toward Kabataş and the funicular to Taksim for the M2 and the M11, or the Havaist bus from Çatladıkapı. Leave earlier than you think: traffic decides this trip.

Twenty-four hours: sleep in the city

With 20 hours or more, ask for the Stopover hotel and sleep in Sultanahmet, Karaköy or Beyoğlu. Add a ferry on the Bosphorus: a public ferry from Eminönü to Üsküdar costs about $1.10 (£0.80; TRY 53) on an Istanbulkart. Walk up to Galata Tower and along İstiklal Avenue in the evening. Our Istanbul city page, linked above, has the full timed plan with prices and opening days. For how Istanbul ranks against other hubs for a full day, see the best stopover cities.

Turkish Airlines Stopover and the free hotel desk

Turkish Airlines Stopover (operating when we checked on October 21, 2026) pays for a hotel on a planned stop of 20 hours to 7 days:

  • Economy: 1 night in a 4-star hotel; 2 nights if your first departure is from the USA.
  • Business: 2 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel; 3 nights from the USA. Bed and breakfast only.
  • Conditions: a round trip on one booking, starting and ending in the same country, all flights operated by Turkish Airlines (ticket number 235, no codeshares), N and R fares excluded, from a listed country (the US and the UK are both on it). Use it once, outbound or return.
  • How: apply at least 72 hours before your first flight online or by email; you cannot apply after landing.

The Hotel Desk on the Arrivals level is a different thing: a free hotel, transfers and a meal for unplanned connections of 12 hours or more in Economy (9 in Business), but only when no shorter connection exists on your route. You cannot combine Stopover and Touristanbul on the same wait. Compare it with other airlines in our free stopover programs guide.

Staying airside: YOTELAIR, lounges and the terminal

YOTELAIR Istanbul Airport is inside the duty-free area: you need a boarding pass for an onward international flight. Cabins book overnight or by the hour, with a 4-hour minimum between 4 a.m. and midnight, and lounge access can be added for $90 (£67; €80). If you need your bags or fly on within Türkiye, book the landside YOTEL instead.

The IGA Lounge on the international departures level sells 6 hours of access for $117 (£88; €104) plus VAT per adult; Turkish Airlines' own lounges are for premium cabins and status members. Otherwise, the terminal is one of the largest duty-free halls anywhere, with plenty of seating and food around the clock.

Left luggage at Istanbul Airport

Two left-luggage offices sit on the Arrivals level, one by the domestic exit and one opposite Exit 13, with lockers on the Departures level at Gates 1 and 6. On the 2026 tariff a cabin-size bag costs $5.40 (£4.10; TRY 270) per 24 hours and a large hold bag $11.10 (£8.30; TRY 550). On a Stopover longer than 24 hours, Turkish Airlines makes you collect your bags at baggage claim, so you will need one of these or the hotel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for a layover in Istanbul?

No, on an ordinary US or UK passport. Both are visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180. UK passports must be valid at least 150 days after arrival.

Is Touristanbul still running in 2026?

Yes. Turkish Airlines updated the tour schedule on May 1, 2026 and lists Sightseeing, Half Day and Evening tours, plus a Bosphorus tour from April 1 to October 31. You need a 6- to 24-hour connection on a Turkish Airlines ticket.

Does Turkish Airlines give a free hotel on a layover?

Yes, in two ways. The Stopover program gives a free 4-star night in Economy on planned stops of 20 hours or more (2 nights if you start in the USA), applied for 72 hours ahead. The Hotel Desk covers unplanned connections of 12 hours or more in Economy when no shorter connection exists.

Is 8 hours enough to leave Istanbul Airport?

Only on Touristanbul. On your own, passport control, two 90-minute bus rides and a 3-hour return buffer leave you almost nothing. With the metro you might get an hour or two in Taksim.

How do I get from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet?

Take the Havaist line to Çatladıkapı, which averages 110 minutes, or the M11 metro to Gayrettepe and the M2 to Taksim, then the funicular and the T1 tram. A taxi on the meter is about an hour without bad traffic.
