24 Hours in Dublin
Dublin is the easiest European city to reach from the US. All ten of the US hubs we track fly here nonstop, and on the way home you clear US immigration and customs at Dublin Airport before you board. The Dublin Express coach reaches the quays at O'Connell Bridge in 28 minutes from Terminal 2, from $10.10 (£7.60; €9) online.
It is not cheap. The cheapest 3-star room inside the canals on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $106 (£79), and $192 (£144) on Friday, June 11. The paid stops, the Book of Kells, St Patrick's Cathedral and the Guinness Storehouse, add up to $68 (£51; €60). The evening is pub music in Smithfield and on Bridge Street.

- 10:00 a.m.
St Stephen's Green (Saturday)
A free walk around the park at the top of Grafton Street before you head to the airport coach on the quays.
The route is 3.7 miles (6.0 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
National Museum of Ireland (Kildare Street) opens only 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays; St Patrick's Cathedral has limited Sunday visiting; Chester Beatty closed until the end of December 2026
How the 24 hours work
The route runs east to west and ends north of the river. Start at Trinity College with a booked 10 a.m. slot for the Book of Kells, since timed tickets sell out. Walk up Grafton Street to Bewley's for an early lunch, then to the free National Museum on Kildare Street. Head west through the old city to St Patrick's Cathedral and on to the Guinness Storehouse, where weekday tours run until 5 p.m.
Dinner is at The Brazen Head on Bridge Street, back toward the Liffey. Cross the river to Smithfield for the trad session at The Cobblestone, which runs from the afternoon until close. On Saturday morning, walk St Stephen's Green before the coach back to the airport.
Sundays and Mondays bend the plan: the National Museum opens only at 1 p.m., so swap it with the cathedral. If it rains, cut the park and give Trinity and the Storehouse more time. The Chester Beatty library at Dublin Castle, usually a free highlight, is closed until the end of December 2026.
Where to stay for one night
We priced hotels inside the canals on Kayak, for two adults on a Friday, 3 stars or better, guest rating 8 or more, with all taxes and fees, and checked each address:
- The Liberties, by Christ Church: Point A Dublin The Liberties on Oliver Bond Street was the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027, at $106 (£79), a short walk from the Guinness Storehouse and The Brazen Head.
- The Liberties, by St Patrick's: Premier Inn Dublin City The Liberties on Newmarket was the cheapest on June 11, 2027, at $192 (£144).
- Temple Bar: Wellington Temple Bar on Wellington Quay was $108 (£81) in January, right on the airport coach route.
East of Trinity, Premier Inn Gloucester Street South was $197 (£148) in June. Every price is the whole room for two, taxes included.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
Dublin has no rail link to the airport. The fastest scheduled option is the Dublin Express 782 coach: its timetable reaches Aston Quay, by O'Connell Bridge and Temple Bar, 28 minutes after leaving Terminal 2 and 33 after Terminal 1, every 15 minutes through the day. It continues along the quays past Christ Church and the Guinness Storehouse. Fares start at $10.10 (£7.60; €9) booked online.
Taxis wait outside both terminals and run on the meter. Dublin Airport puts the fare to the city at $34–$50 (£25–£38; €30–€45), depending on the time and day.
Inside the center, walk. If you need transport, a 24-hour Leap Visitor Card covers Dublin Bus, Luas and DART for $9 (£6.70; €8).
What to eat in 24 hours
- Breakfast or lunch at Bewley's, 78-79 Grafton Street, the grand café with stained glass by Harry Clarke, open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- A pint in the Gravity Bar, the glass rooftop bar at the end of the Guinness Storehouse tour.
- Dinner at The Brazen Head, Bridge Street, serving food until 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Fresh cod and chips from Leo Burdock, the chip shop the Burdock family opened in Christchurch in 1913.
- Afternoon tea at Bewley's, with pastries from its own bakery, if you would rather skip the pub.
None of these places published menu prices on the pages we checked. The Cobblestone serves no food, so eat first. See the best food cities for 24 hours if eating is the point of your trip.
If you only have 12 hours
Keep the Book of Kells, Grafton Street and the Guinness Storehouse, then an early evening at The Brazen Head. On a long layover heading to the US, remember preclearance: Dublin Airport warns that Terminal 2 is busy from 5 a.m. to noon, and you must clear US checks before boarding. For transit rules, see our transit visa guide.

|---|---|---|
| Hotel, one night (whole room) | $106 (£79) | $192 (£144) |
| Dublin Express, both ways (online fare) | $20 (£15.10; €18) | $20 (£15.10; €18) |

Guinness prices change by timeslot, and the $27 (£20; €24) figure is its standard "from" price; off-peak slots can be cheaper. A Book of Kells and Old Library-only ticket, without the digital exhibition, starts at $21 (£16; €19).
Getting there from the US and the UK
Every US hub on our list flies nonstop to Dublin: New York JFK, Newark, Boston, Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles and San Francisco year-round, and Miami in season, on Aer Lingus, Delta, United, American and JetBlue. US citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days. Ireland is outside the Schengen area, so the EU's ETIAS does not apply. Going home, US preclearance in Terminal 2 means you land in the US as a domestic passenger.
From Britain, Aer Lingus and British Airways fly from Heathrow, Ryanair from Gatwick and Stansted, and both Aer Lingus and Ryanair from Manchester and Edinburgh. If you continue from Dublin to the UK, US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20) on GOV.UK. Liverpool and Edinburgh are short flights away, and our European ranking compares them.
When to go
January is the cheaper month for rooms, and the plan is mostly indoors; days are short, so do the park walk in the morning. June evenings are long and light, which suits the pubs, but rooms cost nearly twice as much. We found no organizer-published dates for a 2026 Christmas market when we checked. The Chester Beatty should reopen in 2027. See the best solo city breaks.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough in Dublin?
For the center, yes. Trinity, Grafton Street, the National Museum, St Patrick's and the Guinness Storehouse fit into one day on foot, with a pub evening after. A second day adds Kilmainham Gaol, Howth or the Chester Beatty once it reopens.
Do you need to book the Book of Kells in advance?
Yes. Entry is timed and Trinity strongly recommends booking online. The full experience starts at $28 (£21; €25); it opens at 8:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sundays.
How do you get from Dublin Airport to the city center?
The Dublin Express 782 coach takes 28 minutes from Terminal 2 to Aston Quay, from $10.10 (£7.60; €9) online. A taxi runs on the meter and costs about $34–$50 (£25–£38; €30–€45).
Where can you hear traditional Irish music in Dublin?
The Cobblestone in Smithfield runs sessions every day, from 2 p.m. on Fridays and 2:30 p.m. at weekends until close. The Brazen Head has live music every night from 9 p.m. and on Sunday afternoons.
What is US preclearance at Dublin Airport?
On nonstop flights to the US, you clear US immigration, customs and agriculture checks in Terminal 2 before you fly, so you arrive as a domestic passenger. If you need an ESTA, apply at least 72 hours ahead.
