24 Hours in Venice
Venice changes after 5 p.m. The coach groups go back to the mainland, the lanes empty, and the city that most visitors only see in daylight becomes quiet and lamp-lit. That is the case for one night here rather than a day trip, and the city has added a second reason: on set peak days, day-trippers pay an access fee to enter the historic center, while guests staying the night have been exempt.
Getting in is quick. The ACTV 5-AeroBus runs from the airport to Piazzale Roma in about 20 minutes, says the Veneto Region's tourism site, for $11.20 (£8.40; €10). From there you walk or take a vaporetto, the waterbus. If you are building an Italian rail trip, pair this with 24 hours in Florence or 24 hours in Rome.

The 24-hour plan
- 12:00 p.m.
Rialto Market and cicchetti at Cantina Do Mori
Take vaporetto line 1 down the Grand Canal to Rialto Mercato. The fish market runs Tuesday to Saturday until 2 p.m.; then eat small plates standing at the old bacaro around the corner.
- 1:15 p.m.
Rialto Bridge
Cross the bridge for the classic view down the Grand Canal, then follow the yellow signs through the lanes to San Marco.
- 2:30 p.m.
Doge's Palace
The St Mark's Square Museums ticket is cheaper bought online at least 30 days ahead. Book a timed entry: tickets without one are only admitted from noon, and in winter the last entry is 5 p.m.
- 5:00 p.m.
Piazza San Marco at dusk
Step out into the square as the day-trippers thin out and the lamps come on along the arcades.
- 6:30 p.m.
Spritz and cicchetti on the Fondamenta de la Misericordia
Walk north into Cannaregio, where the canal-side bacari serve wine, spritz and cicchetti to locals; make a meal of it bar by bar.
- 9:30 p.m.
Night vaporetto down the Grand Canal from Ca' d'Oro
Ride line 1 from the Ca' d'Oro stop with the palaces lit along both banks; with a day pass it costs nothing extra.
- 9:00 a.m. (Saturday)
Gallerie dell'Accademia
Venetian painting from Bellini to Titian, open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m.; buy online through the museum's authorized reseller to skip the ticket line.
- 11:00 a.m.
Santa Maria della Salute and the Punta della Dogana
Walk east along Dorsoduro to the domed church and the tip of the customs house, facing San Marco across the water, then take the vaporetto back to Piazzale Roma.
The route is 2.5 miles (4.1 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
The Doge's Palace opens daily (winter 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., last entry 5 p.m.; summer to 7 p.m.). The Accademia is closed on Mondays. The Rialto fish market is closed on Sundays and Mondays. St Mark's Basilica opens at 2 p.m. on Sundays. The Venice access fee applies on 72 days between March 26 and August 15, 2027, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including June 11-13, 2027; January dates are fee-free.
How the 24 hours work
Drop your bag, buy a 24-hour vaporetto pass and ride line 1 down the Grand Canal to the Rialto. The fish market runs Tuesday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the produce market Monday to Saturday, so a Friday arrival works and a Sunday or Monday one does not. Eat cicchetti, the small bar snacks of Venice, at Cantina Do Mori, then cross the Rialto Bridge and follow the signs to San Marco.
Book one thing: the Doge's Palace. The St Mark's Square Museums ticket covers it with the Museo Correr and two smaller collections. It is $39 (£29; €35), or $34 (£25; €30) bought online at least 30 days ahead. The palace says tickets without an entry time slot are admitted only from noon, so book a slot. In winter it opens 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., last entry 5 p.m.; from April to October it closes at 7 p.m.
The evening is in Cannaregio, along the Fondamenta de la Misericordia, then back down the Grand Canal by vaporetto after dark. Saturday morning is the Gallerie dell'Accademia, $22 (£16.80; €20), open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. St Mark's Basilica runs on booked time slots too, and on Sundays it opens only at 2 p.m.; we could not confirm its 2026 ticket price on the official store, so it is not in the costs below. If acqua alta, the high tide, floods San Marco, the plan still works from the Rialto north.
The Venice access fee in 2027
The city's access fee is a charge for day-trippers entering the historic center on set days. In 2026 it was $5.60 (£4.20; €5) per person if paid at least four days ahead and $11.20 (£8.40; €10) after that. The 2026 trial ended in late July, and as of October 2026 no fee applies.
It returns in 2027 on 72 days between March 26 and August 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The dates include June 11 to 13, 2027, the weekend of our summer hotel check, but no January dates. The city says the 2027 rules will be announced by December 31, 2026. In 2026, guests staying overnight in accommodation that charges the tourist tax were exempt from arrival to departure, but had to request the exemption, by QR code or a written declaration. Expect the same step in 2027 and check the city's site before you go. Venetian residents, Veneto residents and under-14s were exempt with ID.
Where to stay for one night
Stay on the islands, not in Mestre. We priced the six historic sestieri on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with taxes and fees in Kayak's stay total:
- Castello: the cheapest qualifying hotel on January 15, 2027 was $71 (£53), on Via Garibaldi in eastern Castello.
- San Marco: the cheapest hotel on June 11, 2027 was $168 (£126), a few minutes west of Piazza San Marco.
- Cannaregio: closest to the station and to the evening part of this plan.
The hotel adds the city's tourist tax. For a 3-star hotel in the historic center it is $2.70 (£2; €2.40) per person per night in January and $3.90 (£2.90; €3.50) from February to December, at the rates valid from April 1, 2025.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The 5-AeroBus to Piazzale Roma takes about 20 minutes and costs $11.20 (£8.40; €10) one way or $20 (£15.10; €18) return. ATVO's express bus makes the same trip in about 20 minutes. From Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia station is a short walk over the Calatrava bridge, and the vaporetti leave from both.
A single vaporetto ride is $10.70 (£8; €9.50) for 75 minutes. The Venezia Daily Pass, $28 (£21; €25) for 24 hours, pays for itself in three rides, and ACTV sells a return airport-bus supplement for passes at $14.60 (£10.90; €13). Road taxis stop at Piazzale Roma. Private water taxis go door to door, but we found no published fixed fare to quote.
What to eat in 24 hours
- Cicchetti at Cantina Do Mori by the Rialto market: crostini, meatballs and a small glass of wine at the counter.
- Sarde in saor, sardines in sweet and sour onions, the classic Venetian bar snack.
- Baccalà mantecato, whipped salt cod on polenta or bread.
- A spritz on the Fondamenta de la Misericordia, where the bacari fill with locals after work.
- Risotto or pasta al nero, black with squid ink, for a sit-down dinner in Cannaregio.
Eating standing up at bacari is cheaper and better than the set menus around San Marco. For more food-led trips, see the best food cities for 24 hours.
If you only have 12 hours
Keep the Grand Canal, the Rialto and the Doge's Palace, and drop the Accademia. Ride line 1 to the Rialto, walk to San Marco for a booked palace slot, and take the vaporetto back to Piazzale Roma. On an access-fee day between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., a day trip means paying the fee. Our guide to planning a 24-hour trip explains how we cut a route down.
What 24 hours costs
Per person, two adults sharing a January room:
- Hotel, half a $71 (£53) double: $36 (£27)
- Tourist tax, January rate: $2.70 (£2; €2.40)
- Venezia Daily Pass plus return airport-bus supplement: $43 (£32; €38)
- Doge's Palace, standard ticket: $39 (£29; €35)
- Gallerie dell'Accademia: $22 (£16.80; €20)
That is about $143 (£107) before food and drink, or about $192 (£144) with a June room and the summer tax rate. Booking the Doge's Palace 30 days ahead saves $5.60 (£4.20; €5).
Getting there from the US and the UK
From the US, Venice Marco Polo has nonstops from New York JFK all year, and seasonal flights from Newark, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth. From the UK there are flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh. There is no practical train from London for one night.
US and UK passport holders need no visa for a short stay in Italy. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been running at all Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026, so expect fingerprints and a photo on your first entry. ETIAS is not yet running; the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20). See our entry and transit rules guide and our ranking of the best city breaks for couples.

Where Venice ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Venice: Interpreti Veneziani Concert at Palazzo Zaguri
Arrive 30 minutes before the start. A reviewer in October 2026 says concerts have moved from the Church of San Vidal to Palazzo Zaguri on Campo San Maurizio, about 3 minutes away, while parts of the listing still show the old venue; check the ticket for the hall.

Taste Venice Like a Local: Food, Wine & Spritz
Meet in front of the Church of the Maddalena in Cannaregio. The page shows $85 against a struck-through $100, so the lower price is a sale. Not suitable for children under 6.

Venice: St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace Tour
Meet on Calle Larga Ascensione in front of the post office near St Mark's Square, 15 minutes early; no backpacks. It does not run on Sundays or religious holidays. The official St Mark's Square Museums ticket (Doge's Palace) is 35 euros on site or 30 euros online at least 30 days ahead (about $39 or $34), so the $121 price is mostly guide and basilica access.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay the Venice access fee if I stay overnight?
In 2026, no: guests staying in accommodation that charges the tourist tax were exempt from arrival to departure, but had to request the exemption. The fee returns on 72 days in 2027, and the city will publish the 2027 rules by December 31, 2026.
When does the Venice access fee apply in 2027?
On 72 set days from March 26 to August 15, 2027, mostly Fridays to Sundays plus longer runs in late April and early June, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In 2026 it cost $5.60 (£4.20; €5) booked four days ahead and $11.20 (£8.40; €10) later.
Is one night in Venice enough?
For the Grand Canal, the Rialto, San Marco, the Doge's Palace and the Accademia, yes. You will not have time for Murano, Burano or the Lido.
How do I get from Venice airport to the city?
Take the ACTV 5-AeroBus to Piazzale Roma, about 20 minutes, for $11.20 (£8.40; €10), then a vaporetto or a walk. A 24-hour vaporetto pass is $28 (£21; €25).
How much is the Doge's Palace ticket?
The St Mark's Square Museums ticket is $39 (£29; €35), or $34 (£25; €30) if you buy online at least 30 days ahead. It also covers the Museo Correr. Book an entry time; tickets without one are admitted only from noon.
