24 Hours in London
London is too big for 24 hours, so this plan does not pretend otherwise. It takes one line through the center, from Westminster Abbey along the river to St Paul's, then north into Covent Garden for dinner and a show. Almost all of it is on foot. The longest walk is the riverside path from Westminster Bridge to Bankside, about 2 miles (3.4 km).
The center is easier to reach than most visitors expect. The Elizabeth line runs from Heathrow to Tottenham Court Road in 32 minutes without a change, for $21 (£15.50) on a contactless card. A central 3-star room on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $115 (£86). Paid entries in the plan total $79 (£59), because Tate Modern and the British Museum are free.

The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Westminster Abbey
Start with the coronation church while the doors are open: general admittance runs 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Fridays but only 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and it is closed to sightseers on Sundays. Allow 90 minutes; buy online to skip the ticket line.
- 12:00 p.m.
Westminster Bridge and the South Bank walk
Cross under Big Ben and walk east along the river path past the London Eye and the National Theatre to Bankside. It is about 2 miles of flat riverside, free, and the best free view in the city.
- 1:00 p.m.
Lunch at Borough Market
London's food market under the railway arches at London Bridge, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, closed Mondays. Eat a Kappacasein raclette or cheese toastie on Stoney Street, or queue for fresh pasta at Padella.
- 2:30 p.m.
Tate Modern
Ten minutes west along Bankside, the former power station. The collection is free; Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until 9 p.m. One hour covers the Turbine Hall and a floor of the collection.
- 3:30 p.m.
St Paul's Cathedral (over the Millennium Bridge)
Walk the footbridge straight to Wren's dome. Sightseeing runs Monday to Saturday with last entry usually at 4 p.m., so do not be late; the ticket covers the cathedral floor, crypt and the three dome galleries.
- 5:45 p.m.
Dinner at Dishoom Covent Garden
Bombay cafe food at 12 Upper St Martin's Lane. Tables for two can be booked only before 6 p.m., after that you queue, so reserve 5:45 p.m. The House Black Daal is $15.60 (£11.70) and the Chicken Ruby $25 (£18.90).
- 7:30 p.m.
A West End show (TKTS booth, Leicester Square)
Pick an evening show at the official TKTS booth at the Leicester Square clocktower, which sells same-day discounted West End seats seven days a week; afterward Soho's bars are two streets north.
- 10:00 a.m.
British Museum (Saturday)
Free and open from 10 a.m.; the museum advises booking a free timed ticket. Two hours for the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures and the Egyptian galleries, then the Elizabeth line from Tottenham Court Road goes straight to Heathrow.
The route is 4.5 miles (7.3 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Westminster Abbey closed to sightseers on Sundays and open only to 1 p.m. on Saturdays; St Paul's closed to sightseers on Sundays (dome galleries only, until October 25, 2026); Borough Market closed Mondays
How the 24 hours work
The order follows the opening hours. Westminster Abbey admits sightseers from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Fridays, but only until 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and not at all on Sundays, so it goes first. From the Abbey you cross Westminster Bridge and follow the river east to Borough Market for lunch. Tate Modern is ten minutes along Bankside, and the Millennium Bridge drops you at the steps of St Paul's. St Paul's last sightseeing entry is usually 4 p.m., which is why the afternoon runs west to east and not the other way round.
Evening is the West End. Dishoom in Covent Garden takes bookings for two only before 6 p.m., so a 5:45 p.m. table leaves time for a 7:30 p.m. curtain. Saturday morning is the British Museum, which opens at 10 a.m. and is a short walk from Tottenham Court Road, where the Elizabeth line leaves for Heathrow.
Know the weak days. Sunday breaks the plan twice: the Abbey is closed to visitors and St Paul's is open only for worship. Borough Market is closed on Mondays. If it rains, cut the riverside walk and take the Jubilee line from Westminster to London Bridge, three stops, and give Tate Modern longer: on Fridays and Saturdays it is open until 9 p.m.
Where to stay for one night
We priced Westminster, Covent Garden, Soho and the South Bank on Kayak for two adults on a Friday, 3 stars or better, guest rating 8 or more, with all taxes and fees in the total:
- Westminster: Hub by Premier Inn London Westminster, by the Abbey, was the cheapest qualifying room on both dates: $115 (£86) on January 15, 2027 and $186 (£139) on June 11, 2027.
- South Bank: Premier Inn London Waterloo on York Road was $117 (£88) in January and $209 (£157) in June, a five-minute walk from Westminster Bridge.
- Covent Garden: Hub by Premier Inn London Covent Garden was $128 (£96) in January and $224 (£168) in June, the closest option to the theaters and Dishoom.
- Soho is the priciest of the four: the cheapest qualifying June room was $301 (£226).
Every price above is the whole room for two, not per person.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
From Heathrow, take the Elizabeth line from the Terminals 2 & 3 station. TfL's journey planner has it at Tottenham Court Road in 32 minutes, and the pay-as-you-go fare is $21 (£15.50). Tap the same contactless card or phone at every gate: the Zones 1-6 daily cap of $22 (£16.30) then covers the airport ride and every Tube trip after it that day. The Piccadilly line is cheaper at $7.90 (£5.90) to Leicester Square, but takes about 52 minutes.
The Heathrow Express is faster to Paddington, 15 minutes, but a walk-up single is $35 (£26), it is not included in fare caps, and Paddington is not central. A black cab runs $60–$113 (£45–£85) on TfL's own typical-fare table, 30 to 60 minutes, plus a $3.70 (£2.80) charge at the Heathrow rank.
For a long layover version of this plan, see our Heathrow layover page.
What to eat in 24 hours
- Raclette or a cheese toastie at Kappacasein, Stoney Street, Borough Market. The stall trades Thursday to Saturday, which suits a Friday plan.
- Fresh pasta at Padella, by the market on Southwark Street. It is made in the window, and the queue moves faster before 1 p.m.
- House Black Daal at Dishoom Covent Garden, $15.60 (£11.70), with a garlic naan at $7.50 (£5.60) and the Chicken Ruby at $25 (£18.90).
- A Bacon Naan Roll for Saturday breakfast, also at Dishoom, $15.60 (£11.70); it opens at 8 a.m.
- A late drink in Soho after the show, on Old Compton Street or Dean Street.
Borough Market traders set their own prices and most do not publish them, so we do not quote them. For cities where food is the whole trip, see the best food cities for 24 hours.
If you only have 12 hours
Keep the Abbey, the riverside walk, Borough Market and Tate Modern, then go back west. Drop St Paul's and the show. That is about five hours in town plus 32 minutes each way on the Elizabeth line, and it keeps you on one line that ends at Heathrow.
On a Sunday, swap the Abbey for the British Museum and Tate Modern, both free and both open. On a Monday, Borough Market is shut; eat at Dishoom instead.

| Westminster Abbey and St Paul's | $79 (£59) | $79 (£59) |
| Total, one person | $236 (£177) | $307 (£230) |
The hotel is the whole room, so two people sharing pay it once. Food and theater are extra. Inside the center, the Zones 1-2 daily cap is $11.90 (£8.90); you never buy a paper ticket.
Getting there from the US and the UK
All ten US hubs on our list fly nonstop to Heathrow: JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth, on American, British Airways, Delta, JetBlue, United and Virgin Atlantic.
US citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). GOV.UK puts the fee at $27 (£20); it lasts two years or until your passport expires, and other websites that charge more are not official. British travelers need nothing, of course.
From elsewhere in the UK, British Airways flies to Heathrow from Manchester and Edinburgh, and easyJet and Ryanair fly from Edinburgh to Gatwick and Stansted. From Scotland the train is often easier: see 24 hours in Edinburgh and the other best one-night city breaks in the UK. London is also the start of most short trips by rail; our train list includes Paris.
When to go
Winter is the cheap season: January's central rate was well under June's, and the museums are calm. Days are short, so the riverside walk is best done by early afternoon. Summer brings long light and the highest prices. In December, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from November 19, 2026 to January 3, 2027 with ticketed entry; see our Christmas list for cities where the markets are the trip.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day in London enough?
For one line through the center, yes: Westminster Abbey, the South Bank, Tate Modern, St Paul's and a West End show fit one Friday and Saturday morning. The Tower of London, the South Kensington museums and the East End need another day.
What is the fastest way from Heathrow to central London?
The Heathrow Express is quickest to Paddington, 15 minutes for a $35 (£26) walk-up single. For the West End, the Elizabeth line is better: 32 minutes to Tottenham Court Road for $21 (£15.50), and it counts toward the daily cap.
How much is a day of travel on the London Underground?
With contactless or Oyster, pay as you go stops charging at the daily cap: $11.90 (£8.90) in Zones 1-2 and $22 (£16.30) in Zones 1-6, which includes Heathrow. A paper Day Travelcard costs more.
Do Americans need an ETA to visit London?
Yes. US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they travel. It costs $27 (£20) on GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app and lasts two years or until the passport expires.
Is Westminster Abbey open on Sundays?
Not for sightseeing. On Sundays you can attend services only. On Saturdays general admittance ends at 1 p.m., so Friday is the best day. An adult ticket is $43 (£32).
