Lisbon Layover
Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport is about 4 miles (6.3 km) from the center, and the metro station sits at the southern edge of Terminal 1 arrivals. That short hop makes Lisbon one of the best layover cities in Europe: you can be on the Rossio or under the arcades of Praça do Comércio about half an hour after you clear the border.
This page is about the airport and the clock: entry rules for US and UK passports, the minimum layover, the ride, and what fits in 6, 12 or 24 hours. If you turn the connection into a full night, our 24 hours in Lisbon plan takes over from there.

Minimum layover to leave the airport: 5.5 hours (5 h 25 min, rounded up). Add an hour if you check a bag through security again or connect between terminals.
TAP closes check-in and bag drop at Lisbon 1 hour before intercontinental flights (45 minutes for domestic and European flights) and wants you at the gate 30 minutes before departure
Can you leave Lisbon Airport on a layover?
Yes. Portugal is in the Schengen area. The US State Department says no visa is needed for 90 days or less, with a passport valid 3 months beyond your departure and 2 blank pages. The UK government counts 90 days in any 180 and wants your passport issued less than 10 years before arrival.
ETIAS is not required yet. It is not in operation and no applications are being collected; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead. EES is live since April 10, 2026: at your first Schengen entry the border officer takes fingerprints and a photo, free, and the UK government warns of longer waits on entry and exit.
One trap for TAP passengers: if you fly from the US or the UK to another Schengen city through Lisbon (New York to Madrid, say), Lisbon is your Schengen entry point. You meet passport control and EES in Lisbon whether you leave the airport or not, so leave time for that queue even on a short connection.
How long a layover do you need in Lisbon?
Add up the pieces. Passport control on arrival, longer if it is your first EES registration. About 20 minutes on the metro each way, plus the change at Alameda. Then the return: TAP closes check-in and bag drop at Lisbon 1 hour before intercontinental flights and 45 minutes before European ones, and wants you at the gate 30 minutes before departure. If you are leaving Schengen, add exit passport control. Plan to be back at the airport two hours before an intercontinental departure.
- Under 5 hours: stay in the terminal, or step outside for a coffee and come back.
- 6 to 7 hours: two to three hours downtown. The Baixa, Rossio and a pastry, nothing more.
- 10 to 12 hours: add Alfama and the castle, or the river.
- Overnight or 24 hours: book a hotel in the Baixa or Chiado, or use TAP's stopover program to stay longer at no extra airfare.
On TAP, bags go through to your final destination on connections of 6 to 24 hours unless you ask at check-in to collect them in Lisbon; on a stop over 24 hours they are checked only to Lisbon. Since we could not verify a left-luggage desk at the airport, keep bags checked through.
Getting into Lisbon from the airport
Metro (fastest): Aeroporto station is the end of the Red Line. Ride to Alameda and change to the Green Line for Baixa-Chiado, Rossio or Cais do Sodré. The line takes about 20 minutes to downtown. Metro Lisboa runs from 6:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day.
Fares from Metro Lisboa: tap a contactless bank card at the gate for $2.20 (£1.60; €1.92) a ride, the easiest option on a layover. A Carris/Metro ticket valid 60 minutes costs $2.10 (£1.60; €1.90) on a navegante occasional card that itself costs $0.60 (£0.40; €0.50). The 24-hour Carris/Metro ticket is $8.10 (£6.10; €7.25), and the version that adds CP trains to Sintra and Cascais is $12.80 (£9.60; €11.40). Bank-card fares are valid on the metro only, not on buses or trams.
Taxi: metered taxis wait outside Arrivals and Departures around the clock; the ride to the center takes about 15 minutes. We found no published fixed airport fare. Aerobus, the old airport shuttle, was discontinued in 2023, so ignore older guides that send you to it. Carris city buses run from Arrivals to Marquês de Pombal, with night routes to the Baixa and Cais do Sodré.
Six hours in Lisbon: the Baixa and a pastry
Take the metro to Baixa-Chiado and walk downhill. The grid of the Baixa, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, runs from Rossio square down Rua Augusta to the arch and Praça do Comércio on the Tagus. Walk back up to Chiado for a pastel de nata at Manteigaria and a coffee at A Brasileira, then take the metro from Baixa-Chiado straight back toward the airport.
That is the whole of a 6-hour layover, and it is enough to see why people come back. Do not try to add Belém on this clock.
Twelve hours: Alfama, the castle and the river
With about eight hours in town, climb from the Baixa into Alfama. Walk up past the Lisbon Cathedral (the Sé) to the Miradouro de Santa Luzia viewpoint, then on to São Jorge Castle on the hilltop. Come down through the lanes for lunch, or eat at the Time Out Market in the Mercado da Ribeira by Cais do Sodré station, which is on the Green Line for the ride back to Alameda.
Lisbon is steep and its cobbles are slippery when wet. Wear real shoes, and allow more time than a map suggests.
Twenty-four hours: sleep in the Baixa
With a full day and a night, stay in the Baixa, Chiado, Alfama or Bairro Alto. Add Belém for the Jerónimos Monastery and the custard tarts at Pastéis de Belém, and spend the evening in Bairro Alto or at a fado house in Alfama. Our Lisbon city page, linked above, has the full timed and priced plan; the 24-hour ticket at $8.10 (£6.10; €7.25) covers the metro, buses and the city's trams.
If you have more than one day, the train to Porto or a TAP domestic flight with the stopover discount turns one hub into two cities.
TAP's Portugal Stopover: what you get
TAP's Portugal Stopover was operating when we checked on October 21, 2026. It lets you add a stop of up to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto to a TAP booking at no extra airfare, on the outbound or the return, on one-way, return or multi-city tickets. It is a free stopover, not a free hotel: you pay for your room.
- A promotional code worth 25% off a TAP flight within Portugal during your stop, emailed after you book on the website or through the contact center (travel agents apply it when they book the domestic flight).
- Offers from over 150 partners, with discounts of up to 50% on hotels, restaurants, tours, museums and shops.
- A special price on the Lisboa Card, the city pass.
Book it when you buy the ticket: choose Stopover on flytap.com and pick your nights. There is no free transit tour in Lisbon. For how TAP compares with Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Emirates, see our free stopover programs guide.
Staying at the airport and leaving bags
Lisbon Airport is the weak link. We found no airside transit hotel, and ANA's own airport website blocked our checks on October 21, 2026, so we could not verify lounge access prices, a left-luggage desk or its hours. Treat a long wait airside as a last resort: on any connection over 6 hours, the city is 20 minutes away and a better place to spend the time.
If you must leave a bag, ask at the airport information desk on arrival, and keep anything you need for the flight with you.
