How to plan a 24-hour trip
A 24-hour trip is mostly logistics. The sights do not change if you have one night or five, but the margin for error does. Miss a timed slot, arrive on the museum's closing day or lose 90 minutes on the airport ride, and a quarter of the trip is gone.
This guide collects the rules we apply to every 24-hour city plan on the site. The prices, times and closing days come from our records for 45 cities, each checked against the transit operator, airport or attraction's own site in October 2026. Where a figure belongs to one city, we name it, so you can check the rule against your own trip.

When to arrive, and on which day
Aim to be in the center, bags dropped, between 9 and 10 a.m. Most plans on the site start then. Kraków's starts at 8:30 a.m. so you are on Wawel Hill when the castle opens at 9; Edinburgh's at 9 a.m. for a 9:30 castle slot. Arrive at lunchtime and you lose the morning sight, not the evening.
Pick the day before the flight. Friday and Saturday work in most cities, because the weekly closures fall early in the week:
- Monday: the Uffizi in Florence, Wawel Castle routes in Kraków, Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, the Accademia in Venice, Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo.
- Tuesday: the Louvre, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, Gyeongbokgung in Seoul, the Art Institute of Chicago, Boston's MFA.
- Wednesday: the Met in New York.
- Sunday: Florence's cathedral, Westminster Abbey and St Paul's for sightseers, and York Minster except 12:45 to 2:30 p.m.
If you can travel by train, do. London to Bath is 73 minutes from Paddington, to York 105 minutes from King's Cross and to Paris 136 minutes on Eurostar, each arriving in the center. From New York, the Acela reaches Philadelphia in 69 minutes and Washington, DC in 175. Our train-from-London ranking sorts the options.
Luggage: one bag, and where to leave it
Travel with carry-on only. Checked bags add a wait at both ends of a trip with no slack. In the US, the TSA limits liquids, gels and creams to travel-size containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) each, in one quart-sized bag. Most UK airports still apply a 100 ml limit, with liquids in one clear, resealable bag of up to a liter, about 20 cm (8 inches) square. GOV.UK notes that some airports now allow containers up to 2 liters, so check yours before you pack.
On arrival, the hotel is the first place to leave a bag, even hours before check-in. If you arrive by train in London, Visit London lists staffed left-luggage desks, run by Excess Baggage Company, at King's Cross, St Pancras, Paddington, Euston, Liverpool Street, Waterloo, London Bridge and Victoria, and in the arrivals halls at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. In Iceland, the 7:30 a.m. Reykjavik Excursions bus from Keflavík runs to the Blue Lagoon, where you can store a bag for $4.10 (£3.10; ISK 500) before continuing into town.
The one hotel night
Stay in the center. One night does not justify a cheaper room 40 minutes out: you would pay the fare twice and lose the late walk back. Every hotel price on our city pages is the cheapest double in a hotel of 3 stars or more with a guest rating of 8/10 or better, inside a named central area, on two Fridays: January 15 and June 11, 2027.
Those two dates show how much the night can swing. Manchester was $76 (£57) in January and $356 (£267) in June. Copenhagen went from $104 (£78) to $269 (£202). Nashville's June Friday fell on CMA Fest, at $428 (£321) against $191 (£143) in January. Singapore barely moved: $61 (£46) and $62 (£46). Before you book, check the city's festival calendar, and in Venice check the access-fee days: the fee applies on 72 days between March 26 and August 15, 2027, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including June 11 to 13.
Airport rides and day tickets
Take the fastest public option and learn its fare before you land. Copenhagen's M2 metro reaches Kongens Nytorv in 14 minutes for $4.50 (£3.40; DKK 30). London's Elizabeth line takes 32 minutes from Heathrow for $21 (£15.50). Where a taxi has a fixed fare, know it: $63 (£47; €56) from Charles de Gaulle to the Right Bank, $62 (£46; €55) from Fiumicino to anywhere inside Rome's Aurelian Walls, $37 (£28; €33) from Madrid's airport to anywhere inside the M-30. In Reykjavík the gap is widest: the Flybus costs $33 (£25; ISK 3,999), the fixed taxi $185 (£139; ISK 22,500).
Buy a day ticket only where it beats two or three single fares, and check whether it covers the airport:
| City | Ticket | Price | Airport? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copenhagen | City Pass 24 hours | $15 (£11.20; DKK 100) | Yes |
| Barcelona | Hola Barcelona 1 day | $14 (£10.50; €12.50) | Yes, L9 Sud metro |
| Montreal | STM 24-hour pass | $8 (£6; C$11.25) | Yes, the 747 bus |
| Chicago | CTA 1-Day Pass | $5 (£3.70) | Yes, from O'Hare |
| New Orleans | RTA 1-Day Jazzy Pass | $3 (£2.20) | Yes, Airport Express |
| Paris | Navigo Jour, zones 1-5 | $13.80 (£10.30; €12.30) | No |
| Rome | ATAC ROMA 24H | $9.50 (£7.10; €8.50) | No Leonardo Express |
| Tokyo | Tokyo Subway Ticket, 24 hours | $6.30 (£4.70; ¥1,000) | No |
| London | Contactless daily cap, zones 1-2 | $11.90 (£8.90) | Zones 1-6 cap: $22 (£16.30) |
In Florence, York and Bath you need none: the plan is walked. Florence's single bus and tram ticket is $2.20 (£1.70; €2), and bus fares in England outside London are capped at $4 (£3) until March 2027.
What to book before you fly
One sold-out slot can break the day. These are the timed entries on our plans that sell out or cannot be bought at the door:
- Anne Frank House, $18.50 (£13.90; €16.50): online only, released every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for six weeks ahead.
- Alcatraz, $48 (£36): on sale 90 days ahead. Closed for dock repairs from October 26, 2026, with reopening anticipated on November 19.
- Sagrada Família, $29 (£22; €26): online only, for a set entry time.
- The Colosseum, $20 (£15.10; €18): a fixed entry time you cannot change.
- Brunelleschi's dome in Florence, $34 (£25; €30): a named ticket with a timed climb, ID required.
- Edinburgh Castle, $31 (£24): timed tickets often sell out online.
- Shibuya Sky in Tokyo, $22 (£16.10; ¥3,400): sold up to two weeks ahead.
- Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, $25 (£18.50; €22): every visit needs a time slot since September 8, 2026.
- Washington Monument, $1 (£0.70) online: released 30 days ahead at 10 a.m.
- Free but booked: the Reichstag dome in Berlin, the US Capitol tour and Preservation Hall in New Orleans, where every reservation is online.
Check for closures the week before
Things change between booking and boarding. Our October 2026 checks picked up the Marché des Enfants Rouges in Paris, closed since a fire on the night of October 11-12; St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, charging non-Scottish visitors since October 5; and Bruges's Groeningemuseum, which closes on January 11, 2027 for a four-year refurbishment. Dublin's Chester Beatty is closed until the end of December 2026. Check the attraction's own site, not a review page, a week out.
What to pack for one night
Pack for the walk, not the wardrobe. Our plans run 1.4 to 18.1 miles (2.3 to 29.2 km) between stops, much of it on foot, so shoes matter more than anything else in the bag. Bring a contactless bank card that works abroad: London, Nashville, San Diego and Miami cap a day of rides on contactless, so you never need to buy a ticket. Add a phone battery pack for maps and timed tickets, and a printed or offline copy of every booking reference.

Frequently asked questions
Is 24 hours enough to see a city?
In a compact city, yes. Florence's plan covers 3.2 miles with a 20-minute tram from the airport. In a spread-out city such as Paris or New York, you see a strong cross-section, not the whole city; our pages say which, and the verdict marks the cities where one night only works with a trade-off.
What is the best day of the week for a one-night trip?
Friday into Saturday, in most cities. Weekly museum closures cluster on Monday and Tuesday, and Sunday cuts sightseeing hours at churches such as Westminster Abbey and Florence's cathedral.
Where can I leave my luggage for the day?
Your hotel first, even before check-in. In London, Excess Baggage Company runs left-luggage desks at the main stations and at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. At the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, bag storage is $4.10 (£3.10; ISK 500) per bag.
Do I need a day pass for a 24-hour trip?
Only where it beats single fares or covers the airport. In Copenhagen, Barcelona, Montreal, Chicago and New Orleans the day ticket includes the airport ride. In Florence, York and Bath you can walk everything.
What should I book before a 24-hour trip?
Anything with a timed entry that sells out: Anne Frank House, Alcatraz, the Colosseum, Sagrada Família, Edinburgh Castle and Shibuya Sky are the ones on our plans. Book them before the flight, then build the day around the slot.
