24 Hours in Vienna
Vienna is easier than it looks for a short stay. The old city inside the Ring is about a mile (1.6 km) across, the Kunsthistorisches Museum sits just outside it, and Schönbrunn Palace is a straight ride on metro line U4. The airport train is fast, and on the dates we checked, the hotels were cheap: the cheapest 3-star-or-better room with a guest score of 8 or more in the seven central districts was a 4-star at $71 (£53) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, and only $78 (£58) for Friday, June 11, 2027.
Two changes matter for anyone planning a trip between now and late 2027. First, from September 7, 2026 until the end of October 2027, the central S-Bahn line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed for rebuilding, so the City Airport Train no longer reaches Wien Mitte by rail; it runs as a bus instead. The fastest way in is now the ÖBB Railjet to Hauptbahnhof. Second, since September 8, 2026, the Kunsthistorisches Museum admits visitors by time slot. Book it before you build the day around it.

The 24-hour plan
- 9:00 a.m.
St. Stephen's Cathedral
Start at the Gothic cathedral on Stephansplatz, the center of the Innere Stadt, before the tour groups. Look up at the patterned tile roof from the square.
- 9:45 a.m.
Hofburg
Walk the Graben and Kohlmarkt to Michaelerplatz and through the imperial palace courtyards to Heldenplatz. Free from the outside.
- 10:30 a.m.
Kunsthistorisches Museum
Across the Ring. Since September 8, 2026 every visit needs a time slot, so book online, where it is also cheaper. Head for the Bruegel room and the domed cafe.
- 1:15 p.m.
Naschmarkt
A 10-minute walk past Karlsplatz to Vienna's long market of about 130 stalls. Lunch at one of the market restaurants.
- 2:45 p.m.
Schönbrunn Palace
U4 from Kettenbrückengasse at the Naschmarkt to Schönbrunn. The State Apartments audio tour takes about 40 minutes; then walk up through the park toward the Gloriette.
- 7:00 p.m.
Figlmüller
U4 back to Schwedenplatz and walk to Wollzeile for a Wiener schnitzel that overhangs the plate. Book a table.
- 9:00 p.m.
Vienna State Opera
Walk Kärntner Strasse to the opera house, lit at night, and on along the Ring. If you have a ticket, this is your evening instead.
- 8:30 a.m.
Café Central
Next morning, breakfast and coffee under the vaulted ceiling on Herrengasse, then U3 and U1 to Hauptbahnhof for the 15-minute train to the airport.
The route is 8.0 miles (12.8 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Kunsthistorisches Museum and Schönbrunn open daily (KHM to 9 p.m. on Thursdays); KHM needs a booked time slot since September 8, 2026; S-Bahn trunk line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof closed September 7, 2026 to end of October 2027
How the 24 hours work
The morning is the Innere Stadt on foot. Start at St. Stephen's Cathedral at 9 a.m., walk the Graben and Kohlmarkt to the Hofburg, and cross the Ring to the Kunsthistorisches Museum for a 10:30 a.m. slot. Adult entry is $25 (£18.50; €22) online or $27 (£20; €24) at the door, under-19s free, open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and to 9 p.m. on Thursdays. Two and a half hours covers the Old Masters.
Lunch is at the Naschmarkt, a 10-minute walk past Karlsplatz. From Kettenbrückengasse at the market, U4 runs straight to Schönbrunn. The State Apartments audio tour takes about 40 minutes and costs $34 (£25; €30); the palace is open daily from 8:30 a.m., closing at 5:30 p.m. through November 2 and earlier in winter. Leave time for the park. Then U4 back to the center for dinner at Figlmüller on Wollzeile and a night walk past the State Opera.
If you cannot get a museum slot, swap the KHM for the Albertina or simply spend longer at Schönbrunn. If it rains, the plan holds: the big stops are indoors and the U-Bahn links them. In winter, do Schönbrunn first thing and the museum in the afternoon, because the palace closes earlier and the KHM does not.
Where to stay for one night
Stay in the 1st district or just outside the Ring, in districts 2 to 7. We priced all seven on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with all taxes and fees in:
- January 15, 2027: $71 (£53) at Austria Trend Hotel Doppio, a 4-star rated 8.6 in Landstrasse, the 3rd district.
- June 11, 2027: $78 (£58) at Plaza Inn Amedia Wien, a 4-star rated 8.3, also in the 3rd.
The 3rd district is a good base this year because the CAT bus stops at Wien Mitte/Landstrasse. The 4th (Wieden) and 6th (Mariahilf) put you next to the Naschmarkt and U4 to Schönbrunn. A room in the 1st itself costs more but saves every transit ride. Kayak's stay totals above include taxes and fees.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
Check the date before you follow an older guide. The Vienna Tourist Board says that from September 7, 2026 until the end of October 2027, trains do not stop at Wien Mitte or Rennweg because the central S-Bahn section is closed. Your options in that period:
- ÖBB Railjet or Intercity: twice an hour, nonstop to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, then U1 to Stephansplatz. Vienna Airport lists ÖBB fares from $4.60 (£3.40; €4.10), including onward travel on the Vienna network. The cheapest fast option.
- CAT by bus: the City Airport Train runs premium buses to Wien Mitte/Landstrasse in 21 minutes, up to five an hour, from August 24, 2026 to October 31, 2027. CAT's published single fare is $16.70 (£12.50; €14.90).
- REX 7: to Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes. The S7 now ends at St. Marx, outside the center.
- Vienna Airport Bus line 2: to Schwedenplatz in the old town in 22 minutes.
Taxis from the rank outside arrivals run on the meter. For the trip back, the tourist board lists fixed prices if you book ahead: $41 (£31; €37) with Taxi 31 300 by app, or $47 (£35; €42) with Taxi 40 100, which charges an extra $20 (£15.10; €18) if you do not ask for an airport cab.
What to eat in 24 hours
Vienna's food is old-fashioned in the best sense, and three of its classics fit into one day:
- Wiener schnitzel at Figlmüller: the house special on Wollzeile, a few minutes from St. Stephen's. Reserve for dinner.
- Lunch at the Naschmarkt: about 130 stalls and market restaurants, from Viennese to Israeli, Turkish and Vietnamese; the tourist board picks out Neni, Umar for fish and the cheese-and-wine bar Urbanek.
- Coffee and cake at Café Central: the vaulted coffeehouse on Herrengasse, for breakfast the next morning.
- Sachertorte at the Hotel Sacher: behind the opera, if you want the original chocolate cake.
- Coffee in the KHM's domed cafe: inside the museum, a break between galleries.
We list no prices because none of these places posts a fixed menu price we could confirm.
If you only have 12 hours
Drop Schönbrunn. Keep St. Stephen's, the Hofburg courtyards, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and lunch at the Naschmarkt, all within a 2-mile (3 km) walk. Take the Railjet from Hauptbahnhof, which is three U1 stops from Stephansplatz, so the airport is roughly half an hour from the cathedral square.
What 24 hours costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Hotel, one night, 3rd district, January 15, 2027 | $71 (£53) |
| Railjet in and out | $9.20 (£6.90; €8.20) |
| Vienna City Card, 24 hours (from) | $21 (£16; €19) |
| Kunsthistorisches Museum, online | $25 (£18.50; €22) |
| Schönbrunn State Apartments | $34 (£25; €30) |
On the ground that is $89 (£67; €79) before food. With the January room, the total is $160 (£120); with the June room, $167 (£125). Single tickets cost $3.60 (£2.70; €3.20) each, valid 80 minutes, so if you only ride the U4 to Schönbrunn and back, singles are cheaper than the card. The Vienna City Card also gives discounts at sights; we could not load Wiener Linien's own fare pages to compare its plain 24-hour ticket.
Getting there from the US and the UK
From the US, Austrian Airlines flies nonstop to Vienna from New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Boston and Washington Dulles, and from Los Angeles in season, according to the airport's airlines table on Wikipedia. That is more US nonstops than Prague, Budapest or Berlin have; from there, Budapest and Prague are train rides away.
From the UK, Austrian and British Airways fly from Heathrow, easyJet and Jet2 from Gatwick in season, Ryanair and Jet2 from Manchester and Stansted, and Ryanair, Austrian and Jet2 from Edinburgh (Austrian and Jet2 seasonal). There is no train from London fast enough for one night.
Entry rules. US and UK citizens enter Austria visa-free for short stays. The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, and Vienna Airport has its own page on it: expect to register fingerprints and a photo on your first entry. ETIAS is not running yet: the European Commission says no applications are being collected and it will announce the start date several months ahead. The fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20).
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable for a day that mixes indoor and outdoor stops. Summer brings long evenings and the Schönbrunn park at its best. Winter is cold and gray, but this is when Vienna is most itself: the Viennese Christmas Market on Rathausplatz runs from November 13 to December 26, 2026, daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the ice rink beside it until January 6, according to the Vienna Tourist Board. The Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz sits right outside the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Compare it with other cities on our Christmas market city breaks and December city breaks lists. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures.

Where Vienna ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Vienna: Classical Concert in the World-Famous Musikverein
The $17 from price is the cheapest seat category, which the page describes as restricted or no view; better seats cost more. Collect tickets in the lobby from an hour before. The paper program is 3.80 euros in cash and the cloakroom needs small change.
Rating as shown on GetYourGuide

Vienna: Skip-the-Line Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens Tour
Meet on the left side of the Gerstner cafe in the Kavalierstrakt, not at the Schlosscafe by the main gate; the operator advises a morning slot. Schonbrunn's own site sells the State Apartments audio-guide ticket for 30 euros (about $34) and its guided Maria Theresia tour for 44 euros (about $49), so this $63 tour costs more than going direct.
Rating as shown on Viator

Vienna: The Ultimate Full Meal Austrian Food Tour
Meet at Judenplatz under the Lessing statue. The page shows $105 against a struck-through $122, so the lower price is a sale. Extra food and drinks are not included.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough to see Vienna?
For the highlights, yes. St. Stephen's, the Hofburg, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Schönbrunn fit into one day with a single metro line. You will not have time for the Belvedere or a full evening at the opera unless you book ahead.
Is the City Airport Train running in 2026 and 2027?
As a bus. From August 24, 2026 to October 31, 2027, the CAT runs premium buses from the airport to Wien Mitte/Landstrasse in 21 minutes, because the central S-Bahn section is closed for rebuilding. The ÖBB Railjet to Hauptbahnhof, about 15 minutes, is the fastest rail option.
Do I need to book the Kunsthistorisches Museum?
Yes. Since September 8, 2026, the museum admits visitors with a time slot. Booking online is also cheaper: $25 (£18.50; €22) instead of $27 (£20; €24) at the door.
When is the Vienna Christmas market in 2026?
The Viennese Christmas Market on Rathausplatz runs from November 13 to December 26, 2026, daily 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., closing at 6:30 p.m. on December 24. Schönbrunn, Maria-Theresien-Platz, Spittelberg and Am Hof have their own markets.
How much is a taxi from Vienna airport to the city?
From the rank outside arrivals, the meter applies and no fixed fare is published. To the airport, you can book a fixed price: $41 (£31; €37) with Taxi 31 300 by app, or $47 (£35; €42) with Taxi 40 100.
