24 Hours in Barcelona

Aerobús: 35 min to the center One night from $102 (£76) Book the Sagrada Família slot

Barcelona is a fair one-night city because its oldest quarter, its beach and its most famous church sit within a short metro ride of each other. From the airport, the Aerobús runs 24 hours a day to Plaça Catalunya. The operator puts the ride at 30 to 35 minutes and the single fare at $8.70 (£6.50; €7.75). That drops you at the top of La Rambla, ten minutes on foot from everything in the first half of this plan.

The catch is the Sagrada Família. It is the one sight that turns a pleasant day into a memorable one, and it is sold online only, for a set entry time. This plan puts it first thing on the second morning, at the 9 a.m. opening, so a late flight or a slow lunch never costs you the slot. Everything else on day one is free: a market, the Gothic Quarter, a park, a beach and two squares. If you want a wider view of the region first, compare it with 24 hours in Madrid or our ranking of the best European cities for 24 hours.

In this guide

The 24-hour plan

  1. 12:30 p.m.

    Lunch at La Boqueria

Eat at a counter bar inside the market off La Rambla, after the morning rush. The market keeps Monday to Saturday hours, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and is shut on Sundays.

    Free
  2. 2:00 p.m.

Barcelona Cathedral and the Gothic Quarter

Five minutes east of the market. Walk the cathedral square, then the lanes to Plaça Sant Jaume and Plaça del Rei.

    Free
  3. 3:30 p.m.

El Born and the Parc de la Ciutadella

Cross Via Laietana into El Born, pass Santa Maria del Mar, and finish in the park's shade by the Cascada fountain.

    Free
  4. 5:00 p.m.

    Barceloneta beach

A 15-minute walk south. Sit on the sand or the promenade for the last of the light; in winter it is a walk, not a swim.

    Free
  5. 8:30 p.m.

Cava and tapas at El Xampanyet, Carrer de Montcada

Walk back into El Born for the early end of the Barcelona dinner hour: house cava, anchovies and conservas at the bar.

    Free
  6. 10:30 p.m.

    Plaça Reial

A late drink under the arcades of the palm-planted square just off La Rambla, then bed.

    Free
  7. 9:00 a.m. (Saturday)

    Sagrada Família

Take the first slot of the day. Tickets are sold online only, each for a set entry time, so book before you fly; the towers cost extra.

    $29 (£22; €26) Book ahead
  8. 11:30 a.m.

Casa Batlló and Passeig de Gràcia

One metro stop or a 25-minute walk. See Gaudí's facade and La Pedrera's from the pavement, then walk down to the Aerobús at Plaça Catalunya.

    Free

The route is 5.3 miles (8.6 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

La Boqueria is closed on Sundays (Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.); the Sagrada Família opens daily but from 10:30 a.m. on Sundays, closes at 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 6.

How the 24 hours work

The route runs downhill and seaward on day one, then uphill into the Eixample on day two. You start at La Boqueria on La Rambla, the market that most visitors photograph and few eat in. Its official hours are Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., so a Friday or Saturday arrival works and a Sunday one does not. From there the Gothic Quarter, El Born and the Parc de la Ciutadella are a chain of short walks, and Barceloneta beach is 15 minutes beyond. You walk back into El Born for dinner and end at Plaça Reial, a minute off La Rambla.

Book one thing ahead: the Sagrada Família. The basic ticket with the audioguide app is $29 (£22; €26); with a tower it is $40 (£30; €36). The basilica opens at 9 a.m. Monday to Saturday and at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays, and on Saturdays it closes at 6 p.m. all year. On December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 6 it opens only from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If it rains, swap the beach for a longer stay in El Born and the covered market hall. If your first day is a Sunday, flip the plan: Sagrada Família at 10:30 a.m., and lunch at a tapas bar in the Eixample instead of the market.

Where to stay for one night

Stay in Ciutat Vella or the Eixample. We priced both on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with taxes and fees in Kayak's stay total:

  • El Raval (Ciutat Vella): the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027 was $102 (£76), a few streets from La Boqueria. Raval is the most central and the most ragged part of the old town.
  • The Eixample: a room near Sant Antoni tied at $102 (£76) in January, and the cheapest on June 11, 2027 was $180 (£135) near Fort Pienc, a walk from the Sagrada Família. Wide streets, quieter nights.
  • The Gothic Quarter and El Born: the best address for this route, usually at a premium over both.

Budget for the tourist tax, which the hotel adds to your bill. For a 3-star hotel in Barcelona the Catalan rate is $2.20 (£1.70; €2) plus the city surcharge of $5.60 (£4.20; €5), so $7.90 (£5.90; €7) per person per night from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027. A 4-star costs $9.40 (£7.10; €8.40). The city surcharge rises to $6.70 (£5; €6) on April 1, 2027, so June stays cost more, and Kayak's total may not include any of it.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

The Aerobús is the fastest door-to-center option. Line A1 serves Terminal 1 and line A2 serves Terminal 2; both end at Plaça Catalunya via Plaça Espanya. A single is $8.70 (£6.50; €7.75) and a return $14.90 (£11.20; €13.30), valid 90 days. It runs around the clock.

The cheaper option is metro line L9 Sud, which TMB says reaches the city in about 32 minutes but ends at Zona Universitària, so you change lines to reach the old town. It needs the airport ticket, $6.60 (£5; €5.90), or the Hola Barcelona card; ordinary singles at $3.30 (£2.40; €2.90) are not valid at the airport stations.

Taxis are metered and black and yellow. The metropolitan taxi authority sets a minimum fare of $24 (£17.60; €21) for any ride from the airport, supplements included. Arriving by train, Barcelona Sants is on metro lines L3 and L5, a few stops from the center.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • A counter lunch at La Boqueria. Pick a bar stool inside the market rather than a stall cup of fruit at the entrance.
  • Cava and anchovies at El Xampanyet on Carrer de Montcada, El Born's standing-room bar.
  • Pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with tomato and oil, which arrives with almost every meal.
  • Seafood by Barceloneta. The old fishermen's grid behind the beach is where to look for rice and fried fish.
  • Vermouth before lunch on Saturday, a local habit in the bars of the Eixample.

Dinner starts late here. A table at 8:30 p.m. is early by local standards, which is why this plan books it then. For more cities where eating is the point, see the best food cities for 24 hours.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the Sagrada Família and the Gothic Quarter, and drop the beach. Book a Sagrada Família slot for your arrival day, eat at La Boqueria, walk the Gothic Quarter and El Born, and finish with dinner in El Born. Passeig de Gràcia is a short detour on the way between the basilica and the old town. Our guide to planning a 24-hour trip explains how we cut a route down.

What 24 hours costs

Per person, two adults sharing a January room:

  • Hotel, half a $102 (£76) double: $51 (£38)
  • Tourist tax, one night at a 3-star: $7.90 (£5.90; €7)
  • Aerobús return: $14.90 (£11.20; €13.30)
  • Two metro singles for the Sagrada Família morning: $6.50 (£4.90; €5.80)
  • Sagrada Família basic ticket: $29 (£22; €26)

That is about $109 (£82) before food and drink. Add the tower and it is about $121 (£90). The Hola Barcelona 24-hour card, from $14 (£10.50; €12.50), only beats single tickets if you ride more than four times.

Getting there from the US and the UK

Every US hub we track has a scheduled nonstop to Barcelona, some only in summer: New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. From the UK there are nonstops from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh. There is no practical same-day train from London for a one-night trip.

US and UK passport holders need no visa for a short stay. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at all Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026, so expect fingerprints and a photo at passport control on your first entry, and no passport stamp. ETIAS is not yet running: the EU says it will announce a start date several months ahead, and the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20). See our entry and transit rules guide.

When to go

Spring and fall give the best mix of warm days and room on the pavements. Summer brings beach weather and the highest hotel prices of the two dates we checked. Winter is mild enough for walking, the light goes early, and the Sagrada Família keeps short hours on December 25 and 26. The city's 2026 Christmas program had not been published when we checked; Barcelona City Council says it will update its Christmas site in November 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough in Barcelona?

For the old town, the beach and the Sagrada Família, yes, if you book the basilica ahead. It is not enough for Gaudí interiors, Park Güell and Montjuïc as well; those need a second day.

How much is the Sagrada Família ticket in 2026?

The basic ticket with the audioguide app is $29 (£22; €26). With a tower it is $40 (£30; €36), and a guided tour is $34 (£25; €30). Tickets are sold online only, for a set time slot. Under-11s enter free.

How do I get from Barcelona airport to the city center?

The Aerobús runs 24 hours from both terminals to Plaça Catalunya in about 30 to 35 minutes for $8.70 (£6.50; €7.75). The L9 Sud metro is slower to the old town and needs the $6.60 (£5; €5.90) airport ticket. A taxi has a $24 (£17.60; €21) minimum fare.

How much is the Barcelona tourist tax?

For a 3-star hotel it is $7.90 (£5.90; €7) per person per night until March 31, 2027: the Catalan rate of $2.20 (£1.70; €2) plus the city surcharge of $5.60 (£4.20; €5). The surcharge rises to $6.70 (£5; €6) from April 1, 2027. The hotel collects it.

Is La Boqueria open on Sunday?

No. The market opens Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.
