24 Hours in Istanbul

M11 + M2: about 45 min in One night from $28 (£21) Ferry to Asia at sunset

Istanbul's old peninsula is a short walk end to end. Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar all lie within walking distance of Sultanahmet Square, so the sightseeing half of a one-night trip needs no transit at all. The other half is the water: a city ferry takes you across the Bosphorus to Kadıköy, on the Asian side, for the price of one tap of an Istanbulkart.

Rooms are cheap. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel in Sultanahmet or Galata with a guest score of 8 or more was $28 (£21) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, taxes in. The hard part is getting in. Istanbul Airport is about 21 miles (34.5 km) from the center, and the fastest public option, the M11 metro plus a change to the M2, takes around 45 minutes to Taksim. If you have a layover rather than a night, our Istanbul layover guide covers the airport side. This page is about staying.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 9:00 a.m.

    Hagia Sophia

Be at the visitor entrance when it opens at 9 a.m. (8 a.m. from April 1). Foreign visitors pay for the upper-gallery route, where the Byzantine mosaics are; museum passes are not valid. On Fridays the visiting area closes from noon to 2 p.m. for prayers.

    $28 (£21; €25)
  2. 10:30 a.m.

    Topkapı Palace

Five minutes' walk behind Hagia Sophia. The combined ticket covers the palace courts, the Harem and Hagia Irene. Allow two and a half hours. Closed Tuesdays; the box office shuts at 5 p.m. in winter.

    $55 (£42; TRY 2,750)
  3. 1:30 p.m.

    Grand Bazaar

Walk west along Divanyolu to the covered market. Go in through the Nuruosmaniye gate, get lost for an hour, and come out on the downhill side toward the Golden Horn.

    Free
  4. 3:00 p.m.

Spice Bazaar and the Eminönü waterfront

Lokum, dried fruit and spice stalls inside, then a balık ekmek (grilled fish sandwich) from the boats moored at the Eminönü quay by the Galata Bridge.

    Free
  5. 6:00 p.m.

    Kadıköy market streets

Take a city ferry across the Bosphorus to Kadıköy on the Asian side at sunset (one Istanbulkart tap). Dinner in the market lanes behind the pier: meze, kebab, pickles and fish.

    Free
  6. 9:00 p.m.

    Galata Tower and İstiklal Avenue

Ferry back to Karaköy, climb the lanes to Galata Tower (open at night as a ticketed museum until 11 p.m.), then walk up İstiklal Avenue toward Taksim for a late drink.

    Free
  7. 8:30 a.m.

    Süleymaniye Mosque

Next morning, Sinan's mosque on the third hill, free to enter outside prayer times, with a terrace over the Golden Horn. Then the tram and metro back toward the M11.

    Free

The route is 9.4 miles (15.2 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Topkapı Palace is closed Tuesdays; Hagia Sophia's visitor route closes noon to 2 p.m. on Fridays for prayers and pauses at other prayer times

How the 24 hours work

Start with the two paid sights while the queues are short. Hagia Sophia opens its visitor route at 9 a.m. in winter and 8 a.m. from April 1, and foreign visitors pay $28 (£21; €25) for the upper-gallery route where the mosaics are. The euro price is charged in lira at the booth's rate, and museum passes are not valid. Topkapı Palace is five minutes behind it. Its combined ticket for the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene is $55 (£42; TRY 2,750). Neither site sells timed slots, so the only booking you need is your hotel.

After lunch you walk downhill: the Grand Bazaar, then the Spice Bazaar and the fish-sandwich boats at Eminönü. Around 5 p.m. take a city ferry across to Kadıköy, eat dinner there, and come back by ferry to Karaköy for a late walk past Galata Tower and up İstiklal Avenue. The next morning is the Süleymaniye Mosque, free outside prayer times.

Two days break the plan. Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays, so on a Tuesday swap in the Süleymaniye Mosque and a longer bazaar afternoon. On Fridays Hagia Sophia's visiting area closes from noon to 2 p.m. for prayers, which is why it comes first. Both mosques also pause visits at each daily prayer. If it rains, spend longer inside Topkapı's Harem and the covered bazaars and skip the walk to Galata.

Where to stay for one night

Stay in Sultanahmet for this plan; the two morning sights are then a few minutes from your door. We priced one Friday night on Kayak for two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, all taxes and fees included, using Kayak's Sultanahmet and Galata neighborhood filter:

  • January 15, 2027: $28 (£21) at Nuray Hotel, a 3-star rated 8.1 in Sultanahmet. Without the neighborhood filter, a 3-star 0.1 mile from Sultanahmet Square was $24 (£18).
  • June 11, 2027: $51 (£38) at Lalinn Hotel, a 3-star rated 8.6 in Sultanahmet.

Karaköy and Galata, across the Golden Horn, suit a trip built around the evening: ferries, bars and İstiklal Avenue are on the doorstep, and the T1 tram crosses the Galata Bridge to Sultanahmet. Beyoğlu around Taksim is the most practical for the airport, because the M2 from Taksim meets the M11 at Gayrettepe. Sirkeci, by the station, sits between the two and is a short walk to the Eminönü ferries.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

The fastest public route is the M11 metro from the airport to Gayrettepe, about 30 minutes, then the M2 to Taksim. Allow about 45 minutes door to door. The M11 charges by distance on the Istanbulkart tariff in force since July 20, 2026: $0.80–$1.50 (£0.60–£1.10; TRY 37–73), plus a second tap for the M2. Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport station machines. From Taksim, the F1 funicular and the T1 tram continue to Sultanahmet.

Havaist airport buses run to Taksim and to Sultanahmet, but their own timetable data gives 90 and 110 minutes, so they are the backup, not the plan. Taxis use the meter: the tariff from July 20, 2026 is $1.50 (£1.10; TRY 72) to start and $1 (£0.70; TRY 48) per km. No fixed airport fare is published.

Arriving by Marmaray or long-distance train, Sirkeci station is a short walk from Sultanahmet, which makes it the easiest arrival of all.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • Balık ekmek at Eminönü: grilled fish in bread from the boats tied up by the Galata Bridge, eaten standing on the quay.
  • Lokum and dried fruit at the Spice Bazaar: most stalls let you taste before you buy, so this is an afternoon snack as much as a souvenir stop.
  • Meze and kebab in Kadıköy: the market lanes behind the ferry pier are lined with produce shops, pickle sellers, fish counters and small restaurants. Walk a loop before you choose.
  • Simit: the sesame bread ring sold from carts all over the old city. It is breakfast if your hotel does not do one.
  • Tea on the ferry: the Bosphorus boats sell glasses of black tea on board, the cheapest seat with a view in town.

No prices here: the stalls change them often and none publish a list we could check.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the old peninsula and drop the ferry. Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar fill most of a day with lunch, and you can be back at an M11 platform from Gayrettepe within the hour. If your 12 hours are in the evening instead, do the Spice Bazaar, the Eminönü fish boats and the ferry to Kadıköy, and see Hagia Sophia from the outside. Remember the airport is far: leave at least an hour for the trip back plus the check-in time your airline asks for. Our layover page has the transit rules.

What 24 hours costs

For one traveler paying the whole room, on the January date:

  • Hotel, Sultanahmet: $28 (£21) ($51 (£38) in June)
  • Transit: two M11 rides at the top of the range plus four standard Istanbulkart taps for the M2, tram and ferries: $6.70 (£5; TRY 331)
  • Hagia Sophia: $28 (£21; €25)
  • Topkapı Palace with the Harem: $55 (£42; TRY 2,750)

Total before food: about $118 (£89) in January and $141 (£106) in June. We assumed the standard full fare of $0.90 (£0.70; TRY 46) for each tap; Istanbulkart transfer discounts can bring it down. The two paid sights are most of the bill, so skipping Topkapı is the biggest saving if budget matters more than the Harem.

Getting there from the US and the UK

Istanbul is one of the easiest long-haul cities to reach. Turkish Airlines flies nonstop to Istanbul Airport from all ten US hubs we track: New York JFK, Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. From the UK there are nonstops from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh, split between Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side. Check which airport your ticket uses: Sabiha Gökçen is a different, eastern approach to the city.

Entry rules. US citizens on a tourist passport do not need a visa for stays of 90 days or less, and the State Department says the passport must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival. British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; GOV.UK asks for a passport valid at least 150 days beyond your arrival date. No electronic pre-registration is required for either. Our transit and visa rules guide covers connections.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best months for walking the old city and riding the ferries on deck. Summer is hot and crowded at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı, which is when the early start matters most. Winter is damp and grey, but it is when the hotel prices above apply and the queues are shortest. The climate table on this page gives the monthly figures. If food is why you travel, compare Istanbul with the other cities on our best food cities for 24 hours list.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Istanbul?

For the old city, yes. Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar fit into one day on foot, and a ferry to Kadıköy gives you the Asian side for dinner. You will not see the Bosphorus palaces or the Princes' Islands; those need a second day.

How much is Hagia Sophia for tourists in 2026?

The Ministry of Culture's ticket page lists $28 (£21; €25) for foreign visitors, charged in lira at the booth's exchange rate. Museum passes are not valid, and the visiting area closes from noon to 2 p.m. on Fridays.

Is Topkapı Palace open every day?

No. It is closed on Tuesdays. It opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m., and the box office shuts at 5 p.m. in winter and 5:30 p.m. in summer.

What is the fastest way from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet?

The M11 metro to Gayrettepe, the M2 to Taksim, then the funicular and T1 tram. Allow well over an hour. The Havaist bus to Sultanahmet is direct but its timetable allows 110 minutes.

Do Americans need a visa for Turkey?

Not for tourist stays of 90 days or less, according to the US State Department. British citizens can also visit without a visa for up to 90 days in 180.
