24 Hours in Singapore
Singapore makes a short stay easy. The MRT runs from Changi Airport into the center with one change, the card fare to City Hall is $1.80 (£1.30; S$2.24), and the places worth your day are close together: Chinatown, the colonial Civic District, Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay sit on a short arc around the river mouth. You eat at hawker centres, where a meal costs a fraction of a restaurant bill and nobody minds a solo diner.
Hotels are not cheap, but they are steady. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel near Chinatown with a guest score of 8 or more was $61 (£46) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, and $62 (£46) for June 11, 2027, taxes in. The plan below starts at 10 a.m., lets the afternoon heat pass in the gardens, and ends with the free Supertree show and satay. If you are only changing planes, read our Singapore Changi layover guide instead; this page is about one night in the city.

The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
Start in Chinatown at the temple on South Bridge Road, then walk the shophouse streets around Pagoda and Temple Street.
- 11:30 a.m.
Maxwell Food Centre
Early lunch at the hawker centre across the road: Hainanese chicken rice is the queue to join. Go before the office lunch rush at noon.
- 1:30 p.m.
Merlion Park
One MRT stop or a walk past the colonial Civic District to the river mouth for the Merlion and the view across Marina Bay.
- 3:30 p.m.
Gardens by the Bay
The outdoor gardens are free. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories are ticketed, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with last entry at 8 p.m., and Cloud Forest closes on maintenance days.
- 7:45 p.m.
Garden Rhapsody at Supertree Grove
The free music-and-light show in the Supertrees runs daily at 7:45 and 8:45 p.m. Lie on the ground under the trees for the best view.
- 9:15 p.m.
Lau Pa Sat and Satay Street
Dinner at the Victorian market hall in the financial district. Boon Tat Street outside becomes Satay Street from 7 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. at weekends, until 3 a.m.
- 8:00 a.m.
Tiong Bahru Market
Next morning, breakfast at the hawker floor upstairs in the pre-war Tiong Bahru estate, one stop from Outram Park, before the MRT back to Changi.
The route is 4.0 miles (6.5 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
Cloud Forest closes on maintenance days (next one October 26, 2026); Garden Rhapsody runs daily; the other stops are open every day
How the 24 hours work
Morning is Chinatown, because it is the coolest part of the day and the temples are busiest later. Walk from the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple through the shophouse lanes to Maxwell Food Centre for an early lunch, then cross to the river mouth at Merlion Park. From there it is a walk or a short MRT ride to Gardens by the Bay.
The outdoor gardens and the Supertree Grove are free. The two glass conservatories, Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, are ticketed, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with last entry at 8 p.m., and allow up to an hour inside each. Cloud Forest currently hosts Jurassic World: The Experience, with loud effects and flashing lights. The ticket site would not show prices without passing a security check, so we have not printed one. At 7:45 p.m. stay for Garden Rhapsody, the free music-and-light show in the Supertrees (repeated at 8:45 p.m.), then walk to Lau Pa Sat for dinner on Satay Street.
No stop on this route has a weekly closing day. The one to plan around is Cloud Forest's maintenance day; the next one is October 26, 2026. When it rains, as it often does in the afternoon, the conservatories are the shelter.
Where to stay for one night
Chinatown is the best base for this plan: Maxwell is at your door, Lau Pa Sat is a walk away, and the MRT runs from Chinatown and Outram Park. We priced one Friday night on Kayak, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, all taxes and fees in:
- January 15, 2027: $61 (£46) at St Signature Chinatown, a 3-star rated 8.1.
- June 11, 2027: $62 (£46) at St Signature Tanjong Pagar, a 3-star rated 8.3, 0.2 mile (0.3 km) from Chinatown.
Check the room size before you book at this price. The Civic District and Clarke Quay put you by the river and its bars, and Marina Bay puts you next to the gardens and the bay views at night, usually at a higher price. Singapore's hotel prices barely moved between our January and June dates, so there is no cheap season to wait for.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
Take the train from Changi Airport MRT Station (CG2) to Tanah Merah, then change to the East West Line toward Tuas Link. LTA's fare calculator gives an adult card fare of $1.80 (£1.30; S$2.24) to City Hall for the 11.4-mile (18.3 km) trip, and journey planners put it at about 32 minutes. You can tap in with a contactless Visa or Mastercard, but Changi warns that admin fees apply to foreign-issued cards. The first train to Tanah Merah leaves at 5:31 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 5:59 a.m. on Sundays and holidays; the last connection toward Tuas Link is at 11:18 p.m.
Taxis are metered. Changi Airport says a ride to the city takes about 30 minutes and costs $19.60–$35 (£14.70–£26; S$25–S$45), plus an airport surcharge of $4.70 (£3.50; S$6), or $6.30 (£4.70; S$8) from 5 p.m. to midnight. Peak-hour and midnight surcharges come on top. Grab and other ride-hail apps pick up at the arrival halls.
There is no rail link from abroad worth using for one night, so Changi is the way in.
What to eat in 24 hours
- Hainanese chicken rice at Maxwell Food Centre: the dish Singapore is known for, poached chicken over rice cooked in its stock.
- Satay on Boon Tat Street at Lau Pa Sat: the street outside the market hall closes to cars and fills with satay grills from 7 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. at weekends, until 3 a.m.
- Laksa or char kway teow inside Lau Pa Sat: the market's own list of hawker favourites includes both, along with nasi lemak and bak kut teh.
- Breakfast at Tiong Bahru Market: the hawker floor upstairs is where the estate eats before work, and a good last meal before the airport.
- A cold drink at any hawker stall: sugarcane juice or lime juice is how locals handle the heat.
Hawker stalls post their own prices and change them often, so we have not listed them.
If you only have 12 hours
Go straight to Marina Bay. Gardens by the Bay, the Supertree show at 7:45 p.m. and Satay Street at Lau Pa Sat make the best short evening in the city, and Downtown Line and East West Line trains get you back to Changi. With a morning instead, do Chinatown, Maxwell and the Merlion and skip the gardens. Changi itself is a reasonable place to spend spare hours; our Changi layover page covers that.
What 24 hours costs
For one traveler paying the whole room, on the January date:
- Hotel, Chinatown: $61 (£46) ($62 (£46) in June)
- MRT from and to Changi: $3.50 (£2.60; S$4.48)
- Singapore Tourist Pass, 1 day, for everything in between: $13.30 (£10; S$17)
- Paid entries in the plan: none. The outdoor gardens and Garden Rhapsody are free.
Total before food and before any conservatory ticket: about $78 (£58) in January and $79 (£59) in June. Honestly, the Tourist Pass is optional: if you only ride the MRT three or four times, paying by card each ride costs less.
Getting there from the US and the UK
Singapore Airlines flies nonstop to Changi from New York JFK, Newark, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and United also flies from San Francisco. These are among the longest flights in the world, which is the honest catch of a one-night trip from the US: you will land tired. From the UK, there are nonstops from Heathrow (Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Qantas), Gatwick and Manchester (Singapore Airlines).
Entry rules. Every visitor must submit the free SG Arrival Card, with its electronic health declaration, on the ICA website or app within three days before arrival; ICA warns against paid third-party sites. US citizens need no visa for stays of 90 days or less, with a passport valid six months beyond departure. British citizens need no visa either; GOV.UK says the officer sets the stay, normally 30 to 90 days, and asks for six months' passport validity from arrival. See our transit visa guide for connections.
When to go
Singapore is hot and humid all year, with heavy afternoon showers common, so the season matters less than the hour: walk in the morning, shelter in the afternoon, go out at night. The climate table on this page gives the monthly figures. When we checked on October 21, 2026, the official tourism site was showing a haze advisory, so check haze.gov.sg before you fly. Singapore: River Cruise, Garden Rhapsody & Spectra by CYT
The river cruise alone is S$28 (about $22) on the operator's own site and both light shows are free to watch, so the $23 mainly buys the sequencing and a guide; hotel pickup is only in the pricier option. It ends at Marina Bay Sands or Lau Pa Sat, which is handy for a late satay dinner.

Frequently asked questions
Is 24 hours enough in Singapore?
For a first look, yes. Chinatown, Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay and two or three hawker meals fit into one day, and the free Supertree show gives you a fixed evening plan. Sentosa and the zoo need more time.
How do I get from Changi Airport to the city by MRT?
Take the train from Changi Airport station to Tanah Merah and change to the East West Line toward Tuas Link. City Hall is about 32 minutes away and the adult card fare is $1.80 (£1.30; S$2.24).
What time is the Gardens by the Bay light show?
Garden Rhapsody runs daily at 7:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. in the Supertree Grove. Admission is free, except during ticketed events such as Christmas Wonderland.
Do I need to fill in the SG Arrival Card?
Yes. All travelers entering Singapore must submit it within three days before arrival. It is free on the ICA website and app; only passengers who stay airside in transit are exempt.
When does Satay Street open?
Lau Pa Sat lists Satay Street on Boon Tat Street as open 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. at weekends.
