Dubai Layover
Dubai International (DXB) is about 7 miles (11.3 km) from Downtown Dubai, with Red Line metro stations in front of Terminals 1 and 3. Its biggest draw for a layover is Emirates' Dubai Connect: on eligible connections of 6 to 26 hours, the airline pays for the hotel, meals, transfers and visa.
2026 changes the question. The US State Department rates the UAE Level 3, Reconsider Travel (issued August 29, updated September 17), after Iran launched more than 2,000 missiles and drones at the UAE in March and April. DXB's airspace closed on February 28, and the State Department reports significant disruption to commercial flights. Dubai Airports' CEO said in July that operations were completely normal, with about 50 airlines flying against roughly 100 before the conflict, and Emirates near 90% of its schedule. Dubai has no city page here, so below are compact 6-, 12- and 24-hour plans.

Can you leave Dubai airport on a layover?
UK passports: the UK government says a visit visa is issued free on arrival, for up to 90 days in a 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival; if you only change planes without passing immigration, 3 months is enough.
US passports: the State Department says US citizens with a regular passport can get a visa on arrival for up to 90 days in any 180, non-renewable, with 6 months' passport validity. It lists no fee. Emergency 12-page passports are not accepted, and travelers with an X sex marker may be refused boarding or entry.
Staying airside needs nothing. Dubai Connect includes a complimentary 48-hour visa where one is needed, granted on arrival subject to UAE immigration.
How long a layover do you need in Dubai?
The pieces: immigration on arrival, then the metro, about 25 minutes to Burj Khalifa by our estimate (13 stops at the 60 to 90 seconds between stations Wikipedia cites, plus dwell time), less to the Creek. Emirates wants you through passport control and security 90 minutes before departure and at the gate no later than 60 minutes before in premium cabins. Plan to be back at the terminal two hours ahead.
- Under 5 hours: stay airside.
- 6 hours: Old Dubai: the Creek, an abra crossing and the souks.
- 8 to 12 hours: Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, ideally at dusk.
- 12 to 26 hours: check whether you qualify for Dubai Connect and sleep in a free hotel.
Know the metro hours: Dubai Airports gives Monday to Thursday 5 a.m. to midnight, Friday 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., Saturday 5 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 8 a.m. An early Sunday arrival means a taxi. In 2026, also check your airline's flight status before you leave the terminal: the FCDO warns airports and airspace in the region can close at short notice.
Getting into Dubai from the airport
Metro: the Red Line stops at Airport Terminal 3 and Airport Terminal 1, reached directly from Arrivals; Terminal 2 needs a shuttle or taxi. Buy a paper nol Red Ticket from a machine for $0.50 (£0.40; AED 2), then load trips. RTA fares on a Red Ticket are $1.10 (£0.80; AED 4) within 1 zone, $1.60 (£1.20; AED 6) across 2 adjacent zones and $2.30 (£1.70; AED 8.50) beyond that. A nol Silver card costs $6.80 (£5.10; AED 25) including $5.20 (£3.90; AED 19) of credit. You may take two pieces of luggage, hand luggage included.
Taxi: Dubai Taxi ranks are at every terminal around the clock. The starting fare is $6.80 (£5.10; AED 25), then the meter runs by distance. Uber, Careem and Bolt also pick up from marked points.
Six hours in Dubai: the Creek and the souks
Ride the Red Line to Union and change to the Green Line toward Al Ras for Deira, the old trading side of the Creek. Walk the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk, then cross Dubai Creek on a wooden abra to Bur Dubai. On the far bank, wander the wind-tower houses of the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and stop for a coffee or a shawarma before riding back. This is the shortest and most rewarding Dubai layover: little traffic risk, and every stop is within walking distance of the Creek.
Twelve hours: Burj Khalifa and the fountain
Add Downtown Dubai. Take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and walk through Dubai Mall to the foot of the tower. If you go up, book a timed slot for the observation decks in advance, and aim for late afternoon so you see the city in daylight and after dark. Stay for the Dubai Fountain show on the lake in the evening, then eat in the mall or at Souk Al Bahar across the water. In summer, swap the Creek walk for the air-conditioned mall and keep outdoor time to the evening.
Twenty-four hours: sleep in town and see the coast
With a full day, and especially with a free Dubai Connect hotel, do Old Dubai in the morning and Downtown in the evening. With more time, the Red Line runs on to Dubai Marina and the beach at JBR, and the Museum of the Future sits on Sheikh Zayed Road near Emirates Towers. Emirates Dubai Connect and Dubai Stopover packages
Dubai Connect was operating when we checked Emirates' pages on October 21, 2026. It gives a free hotel, transfers by coach, applicable meals and a 48-hour visa when:
- your connection in Dubai is 6 to 26 hours, in any cabin, and no shorter connection exists for your itinerary;
- both flights are operated by Emirates (Emirates-marketed flydubai flights via Terminal 3 can qualify), on one ticket starting 176;
- your fare (base plus carrier surcharge) from the Americas or Europe is at least $450 (£337) one-way or $700 (£524) return;
- you add it in Manage Booking at least 24 hours before your inbound flight to Dubai departs. Under-18s must travel with an adult.
On arrival, meet the Dubai Connect desk in Arrivals. Expect to show a credit card at the hotel for extras. Dubai Stopover is different: paid hotel, tour and "24 or 48-hour Dubai highlights" packages through Emirates, with boarding-pass discounts at hundreds of venues. There is no free transit tour. See how it compares in our free stopover programs guide, or try Doha and Istanbul.
