Zurich Layover

Train to Zürich HB: 10 minutes Single fare $8.50 (£6.40) Worth it from about 6 hours

Zurich Airport sits about 6 miles (9.3 km) north of the city, and it has a railway station under the terminal. Trains to Zürich HB, the main station, run every 5 to 10 minutes between 5 a.m. and midnight and take about 10 minutes, according to Zurich Tourism. That makes Zurich one of the few European hubs where a 6-hour connection can buy a real walk through an old town and a look at a lake.

The catch is the border. If you fly in from the US or the UK and out to a non-Schengen city, you cross passport control twice, and since April 10, 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records your fingerprints and photo the first time. This page builds the minimum layover from those pieces, then gives you a 6-, 12- and 24-hour plan with named places. If your connection is shorter, the transit visa guide explains what you can do without leaving.

Minimum layover to leave the airport: 5.5 hours (5 h 05 min, rounded up). Add an hour if you check a bag through security again or connect between terminals.

Zurich Airport recommends arriving two to three hours before departure; check-in runs from 4 a.m. at the earliest to 10 p.m. at the latest

Can you leave Zurich Airport on a layover?

Yes, on a US or UK passport. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so you get the same 90 days visa-free as in France or Italy. The UK government counts it as 90 days in any 180 and wants your passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid for 3 months after you leave. The US State Department is stricter for Switzerland: it asks for 6 months' validity from the date of entry and says the rule is strictly enforced. Check your passport before you book.

ETIAS is not required yet. The Dutch government's ETIAS page says the system is not in operation and no applications are being collected, and the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. Ignore any site that sells you an ETIAS today.

EES is live. The European Commission says the Entry/Exit System became fully operational on April 10, 2026, replacing passport stamps. At your first Schengen entry you give fingerprints and a facial image; there is no fee, and the UK government says the record stays valid for 3 years. Expect a longer queue the first time. Leaving the airport means one EES check on the way in and another on the way out.

If you stay airside on a non-Schengen to non-Schengen connection (New York to Dubai, say), you never meet the border at all: the Gates D and E piers and the Transit Hotel are in the non-Schengen area.

How long a layover do you need in Zurich?

Build it from the fixed pieces. Passport control on arrival comes first, slower if it is your first EES registration. Then the train: about 10 minutes each way, every 5 to 10 minutes. Then the return: Zurich Airport recommends arriving two to three hours before departure, and if you fly beyond Schengen you clear exit passport control again.

  • Under 5 hours: stay airside. By the time you clear the border and come back two hours early, you get an hour in town at best.
  • 6 hours: roughly three hours in the city once you take off the two-hour return buffer, two train rides and passport control. Enough for the Old Town and the lake.
  • 9 to 12 hours: a full afternoon with a museum and a sit-down meal.
  • Overnight: sleep in town or in the airside Transit Hotel, depending on whether you want the city or the shortest morning.

Check your bags through to your final destination. If you cannot, the left-baggage office at Arrival 2 opens daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Getting into Zurich from the airport

Train (fastest): from Zürich Flughafen station under the Airport Centre, S-Bahn lines S2 and S16 plus regional trains run to Zürich HB in about 10 minutes. A single costs $8.50 (£6.40; CHF 7); a 24-hour ticket covering the airport and the city is $17 (£12.70; CHF 14). Zurich Tourism says trains run daily every 5 to 10 minutes between 5 a.m. and midnight, and the first train back to the airport leaves the city at 4:45 a.m.

Tram 10: the slow, scenic option, about 35 minutes to the main station past ETH Zurich and the university, same fare.

Taxi: ranks are in front of Arrivals 1 and 2. Zurich Tourism puts the ride to the center at $61–$85 (£45–£64; CHF 50–70), with most taxis charging a $7.30 (£5.50; CHF 6) basic fare plus $4.60 (£3.50; CHF 3.80) per kilometer. On a layover the train is faster and a fraction of the price.

Zürich Card: 24 hours costs $35 (£26; CHF 29) for adults at the prices that apply from December 13, 2026. It covers the airport train and city transport and adds free entry to many museums. Buy it only on a 12- or 24-hour stop with a museum in the plan.

Six hours in Zurich: the Old Town and the lake

With about three hours in the city, walk it. From Zürich HB, cross to Bahnhofstrasse and walk south. Turn left up the steps to Lindenhof, a tree-shaded terrace above the Limmat with a view over the river to the Old Town. Drop down to St. Peter and the Fraumünster, known for its Marc Chagall stained-glass windows.

Cross the Münsterbrücke to the Grossmünster, the twin-towered church that is Zurich's emblem, and wander the lanes of the Niederdorf on the east bank. Finish at Bürkliplatz, where Bahnhofstrasse meets the lake, then pick up Luxemburgerli macarons at Confiserie Sprüngli on Paradeplatz on the way back to the station. Leave the city so that you are back at the airport two hours before departure.

Twelve hours: add a museum, a meal and the water

Twelve hours gives you about seven or eight in town. Add the Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum), in a castle-like building right behind Zürich HB, or the Kunsthaus Zürich at Heimplatz for Swiss and European art; check which museums your Zürich Card covers before you go. Eat a proper Swiss lunch at the Zeughauskeller, a beer hall in a former arsenal off Paradeplatz, or keep it quick with a bratwurst from a stand around Bellevue.

In summer, swim or sit at one of the lake and river baths, or take a ZSG boat from Bürkliplatz for a short loop on Lake Zurich. On a clear day, the S10 train from Zürich HB climbs to Uetliberg, the city's hill, for a view over the lake toward the Alps.

Twenty-four hours: sleep in town

With a full day, sleep in the city: the train makes an early flight easy, with the first service to the airport at 4:45 a.m. Spend the evening in the bars of the Niederdorf or in Zürich West, the former industrial district by Hardbrücke station, then use the morning for the lake or a museum. With 24 hours, the 24-hour travel ticket at $17 (£12.70; CHF 14) or the Zürich Card pays for itself.

Zurich is also the gateway to Switzerland's rail network, and many travelers use a long connection for Lucerne or the Rhine Falls. Check the SBB timetable before you go, and keep the airport's two-hour return advice for the last leg. For more European hubs that reward a full day, see the best European cities for a 24-hour layover.

Is there a free stopover or transit tour in Zurich?

Not one we could confirm. SWISS's website refused our checks on October 21, 2026, so we could not verify any current SWISS stopover offer, and Zurich Airport lists no free hotel or free city tour for transit passengers. If a SWISS fare lets you build a multi-day stop in Zurich, price it as a multi-city ticket and compare. For the airlines that do run free or cheap stopovers, from TAP in Lisbon to Turkish Airlines in Istanbul, see our guide to free stopover programs.

Staying airside: the Transit Hotel, lounges and showers

The Transit Hotel & Dayrooms is next to Gates D on the first floor of the non-Schengen area, so you can use it without a visa or passport control. Reception is staffed around the clock. A night (check-in from 7 p.m., check-out 8 a.m.) costs $182 (£136; CHF 150) single and $243 (£182; CHF 200) double; a day room for up to 4 hours is $109 (£82; CHF 90) single, and a couch in the rest area is cheaper. A shower costs $30 (£23; CHF 25). Showers and toilets are in the corridor. The hotel is closed from November 9 to 22, 2026 for refresh works and reopens on November 23.

Access is possible only with a boarding pass and hand luggage. The airport says access from the Schengen side is not possible between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Landside, the Capsule Hotel Zurich Airport faces Check-in 1, and Radisson Blu and Hyatt hotels are a short walk from the terminal. Pay-in Aspire lounges are in the Airside Center and at Gates E.

Left luggage at Zurich Airport

The left-baggage office is at Arrival 2 in the public area, open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A bag up to 25 kg costs $27 (£20; CHF 22) for up to 24 hours ($18.20 (£13.60; CHF 15) for up to 4 hours); hand baggage up to 8 kg is $21 (£15.50; CHF 17) for 24 hours. You pay in advance, by card preferably. SBB also runs lockers in Airport Shopping. Mind the closing time: a bag left until after 10 p.m. stays until 6 a.m.
