24 Hours in Berlin

FEX: 23 min to Hauptbahnhof One night from $77 (£58) Reichstag dome: free, book

Berlin is cheaper than its reputation for a one-night stay. The cheapest central 3-star with a guest score of 8 or more was $77 (£58) on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, about half the price of the same search in Amsterdam. And the airport is no longer the problem it was before BER opened: the FEX Airport Express runs from the station under Terminal 1 to Hauptbahnhof in about 23 minutes, every 15 minutes from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m., according to the airport.

The catch is size. Berlin has no single old town. Its headline sights are spread from the Reichstag to the East Side Gallery, about 3 miles (4.6 km) apart as the crow flies, so this plan strings them along two U-Bahn lines and one S-Bahn ride, and ends in Kreuzberg, where the evening is the point. Every stop in the 24 hours below is free except transport. The one thing you must arrange before you fly is the Reichstag dome: entry costs nothing, but the Bundestag only admits visitors who registered in advance.

    Free
  6. 4:00 p.m.

    Museum Island

Tram or walk down to the Spree for the Berlin Cathedral, the Lustgarten and the colonnades. Go inside a museum only if you have booked one; this plan keeps the day free of entry fees.

    Free

    East Side Gallery

S-Bahn from Hackescher Markt to Warschauer Strasse. Walk the longest surviving stretch of the Wall, painted end to end, along the river at dusk.

U1 from Warschauer Strasse to Kottbusser Tor. Dinner and bars on and around Oranienstrasse: Turkish grills, falafel and late kebab shops.

    Free
  9. 9:30 a.m.

    Gendarmenmarkt

Next morning, coffee on the square between the two domed churches, then the FEX from Hauptbahnhof or Potsdamer Platz to the airport.

    Free

The route is 9.2 miles (14.8 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Konnopke's Imbiss closed Sundays and Mondays; Reichstag dome by advance registration only, check the Bundestag's day-of-visit notices

How the 24 hours work

The morning is the government quarter on foot. The Reichstag dome is at 10 a.m., the Brandenburg Gate five minutes away, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe one block south. From Mohrenstrasse, the U2 runs without a change to Eberswalder Strasse in Prenzlauer Berg, where lunch is a currywurst at Konnopke's Imbiss under the elevated tracks.

The afternoon follows the Wall. A 15-minute walk west takes you to the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, where wall, death strip and watchtower still stand together. Then south to Museum Island for the cathedral and the colonnades, and the S-Bahn to Warschauer Strasse for the East Side Gallery at dusk. Dinner is one U1 stop away, on Oranienstrasse in Kreuzberg.

The plan bends easily. If you could not get a dome slot, swap in a booked museum on Museum Island for the morning. If it rains, the Wall Memorial's visitor center and the cathedral give you cover. The day that breaks it is Sunday or Monday, when Konnopke's is closed; eat at one of the snack stands at Eberswalder Strasse instead. We could not load the Berlin State Museums' site to confirm 2026 opening hours and prices, so the plan does not depend on a museum ticket.

Where to stay for one night

Stay in Mitte, or in Kreuzberg if the evening matters more than the morning. We priced both on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with all taxes and fees in:

  • January 15, 2027: $77 (£58). Two hotels tied, Hotel Gat Point Charlie near Checkpoint Charlie and Premier Inn Berlin City Centre. Both are a short walk or one U-Bahn stop from the Reichstag end of the plan.
  • June 11, 2027: $124 (£93) at Grenzfall, beside the Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse. In central Mitte proper, the cheapest was $131 (£98) at Living Hotel Grosser Kurfuerst.

The Checkpoint Charlie area is the best compromise: walkable to the Brandenburg Gate, and one U-Bahn ride from Kreuzberg at night. Around Alexanderplatz you get the most choice and the most direct S-Bahn to the East Side Gallery. Kreuzberg rooms are fine if you plan to stay out late.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

Berlin Brandenburg Airport sits in fare zone C, so you need a Berlin ABC single ticket, $5.60 (£4.20; €5) from BVG, valid for 120 minutes in one direction with changes. The FEX Airport Express leaves from the station on level U2 under Terminal 1 and reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 23 minutes, Potsdamer Platz in about 19. The airport says the FEX and RE20 together run four trains an hour until December 2026.

Inside the city, a 24-hour ticket for zones AB costs $12.60 (£9.40; €11.20). If you buy the ABC version at $14.50 (£10.80; €12.90) on arrival, it covers the airport train in and, if you leave inside 24 hours, out again. A single AB ticket is $4.50 (£3.40; €4).

Taxis wait at the ranks outside both terminals. The airport does not publish a fare to the center, so we give none; the train is quicker into Mitte at most hours. If you arrive by train from elsewhere in Europe, you are already at Hauptbahnhof, a 10-minute walk from the Reichstag.

What to eat in 24 hours

Berlin eats standing up, which is good news on a tight schedule. Five to try:

  • Currywurst at Konnopke's Imbiss: the stand under the U2 viaduct at Eberswalder Strasse, open Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from noon.
  • A kebab on Oranienstrasse: Kreuzberg's Turkish grills and late-night kebab shops line the street around Kottbusser Tor.
  • Curry 36 on Mehringdamm: the other famous currywurst stand, in western Kreuzberg.
  • Falafel and mezze around Kottbusser Tor: Middle Eastern places are as common here as currywurst.
  • Coffee and a pastry on Gendarmenmarkt: the next morning, before the train.

None of these publish fixed menu prices online, so we do not quote any.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the government quarter and the Wall. Do the Reichstag dome, the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust memorial in the morning, then go straight to the East Side Gallery in the afternoon and skip Prenzlauer Berg. If you are passing through on a rail journey, Hauptbahnhof is a 10-minute walk from the Reichstag, so you can see the gate and the memorial between trains with a two-hour gap.

Getting there from the US and the UK

From the US, the airlines table for Berlin Brandenburg on Wikipedia lists two nonstop routes from the hubs we track: United from Newark, and Delta from New York JFK in season. From anywhere else in the US you connect, usually through a European hub.

From the UK, British Airways and Eurowings fly from Heathrow, easyJet from Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh, and Ryanair from Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh, with Jet2 from Manchester in season. One change to note: Wikipedia lists Ryanair's Berlin base as ending on October 24, 2026, and some of its Berlin routes ending this autumn, so check that a route still runs before you plan around a fare. There is no train from London fast enough for a one-night trip.

Entry rules. US and UK citizens enter Germany visa-free for short stays. Since April 10, 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System is fully operational, so you register fingerprints and a photo on first entry instead of getting a passport stamp. ETIAS is not running yet: the European Commission says no applications are being collected and a start date will be announced several months ahead. The fee, when it starts, has been set at $22 (£16.80; €20).

When to go

Late spring to early autumn is best for a day that is mostly outdoors, with long evenings by the river and beer gardens open. Winter days are short and gray, but rooms are cheapest and Advent brings the Christmas markets: WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt runs from November 23 to December 31, 2026, according to visitBerlin, and the Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace from November 23 to December 27. Frequently asked questions

Is 24 hours enough for Berlin?

For the essentials, yes: the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust memorial and two stretches of the Wall fit into one day with a few U-Bahn rides. You will not see the museums properly or more than one evening neighborhood.

Do you need to book the Reichstag dome?

Yes. Entry to the dome and roof terrace is free, but the German Bundestag requires advance registration through its online form. Walk-ups without a booking are not part of the official process.

How do I get from BER airport to the city center?

Take the FEX Airport Express from the station under Terminal 1. It reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 23 minutes and Potsdamer Platz in about 19. You need a Berlin ABC ticket, $5.60 (£4.20; €5) for a single.

Which Berlin day ticket should I buy?

The BVG 24-hour ticket costs $12.60 (£9.40; €11.20) for zones AB, which covers the whole plan. The ABC version, $14.50 (£10.80; €12.90), also covers the airport and is worth it if you will fly out within 24 hours of buying it.

When are the Berlin Christmas markets in 2026?

visitBerlin lists WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt from November 23 to December 31, 2026, the Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace from November 23 to December 27, and the Spandau market from November 23 to December 22.
