24 Hours in Bruges
Bruges is the rare city where one night is not a compromise but the best way to see it. The old town inside the canal ring is small enough to cross on foot, and the crowds that fill it by day leave on the evening trains. Getting there takes a little planning. There is no useful airport in Bruges itself, so you fly to Brussels and take the train. Brussels Airport lists a direct service to Bruges taking 1 hour 25 minutes, and SNCB's timetable has one an hour.
From London it is simpler. Eurostar sells a through ticket to Bruges with a change at Brussels-Midi, and puts the trip at about 3 hours 30 minutes. This plan starts with a late lunch on the Markt, spends the afternoon on the water and in a brewery, and saves the Belfry for 9 a.m. on Saturday, when it opens early. Pair it with 24 hours in Paris or 24 hours in Amsterdam for a longer rail trip.

The 24-hour plan
- 12:30 p.m.
Frites on the Markt
Walk in from the station and eat a cone of frites from the stands at the foot of the Belfry, facing the guild houses of the main square.
- 2:00 p.m.
Basilica of the Holy Blood on the Burg
Two minutes east. The upper chapel is free and the relic is shown daily from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; the small museum and treasury cost extra.
- 2:45 p.m.
Canal boat from the Rozenhoedkaai
Take the half-hour boat trip from one of the five landing stages near the quay. Tickets are sold only at the jetty, so expect a queue at busy times.
- 3:45 p.m.
De Halve Maan brewery
Ten minutes south on Walplein. The family brewery runs daily tours that end with a glass of its Brugse Zot blond.
- 5:00 p.m.
The Begijnhof and the Minnewater
Walk through the whitewashed beguinage courtyard before it shuts at 6:30 p.m., then out to the lake and its bridge as the light goes.
- 7:30 p.m.
Flemish stew and beer at Bierbrasserie Cambrinus
Back past the Markt to Philipstockstraat for stoverij, beef stewed in beer, and a long beer list.
- 9:30 p.m.
A tripel at Herberg De Garre
Find the narrow alley off Breidelstraat for one strong house beer in a tiny old tavern, then walk the empty, lit squares to bed.
- 9:00 a.m. (Saturday)
Climb the Belfry
On Saturdays the tower opens at 9 a.m. all year. Book online: Musea Brugge calls it a busy location, and the 366 steps are single-file.
- 10:30 a.m.
Chocolate at Dumon, Eiermarkt
Buy a box of pralines a minute north of the Markt, then walk or take the bus back to the station.
The route is 1.4 miles (2.3 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
The Groeningemuseum closes on January 11, 2027 for a four-year refurbishment (part of its collection moves to BRUSK). In winter (November 3 to March 31) the Belfry opens 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and is closed December 25 and January 1. The Basilica of the Holy Blood closed for a week in January 2026 (January 12 to 17). From November to February only one boat jetty is guaranteed open each day.
How the 24 hours work
Everything here is a walk of ten minutes or less. You arrive on the Markt, eat frites under the Belfry, then cross to the Burg for the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The upper chapel is free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.; the relic is shown every day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The museum and treasury cost $5.60 (£4.20; €5). From there you walk to the canals for a boat trip, south to De Halve Maan brewery, and on to the Begijnhof and the Minnewater as the light fades.
Two things decide the timing. The Belfry is busiest at midday, and Musea Brugge recommends booking online. On Saturdays it opens at 9 a.m. all year; on winter weekdays, from November 3 to March 31, it opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. The adult ticket is $17.90 (£13.40; €16) at weekends and $16.80 (£12.60; €15) on winter weekdays. It is closed on December 25 and January 1.
The boats are the other variable. Visit Bruges says trips are guaranteed daily from March to October, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. From November to February only one jetty is guaranteed to open each day, on a rotation, so in January ask at the tourist office on the Markt. If it rains, swap the boat for a longer brewery visit. One more warning for winter trips: the Basilica of the Holy Blood closed for a week in mid-January 2026, so check its site before a January visit.
Where to stay for one night
Stay inside the canal ring. Kayak lists many "Bruges" hotels on the coast at Blankenberge and Knokke, or out in Oostkamp, so check the map. We priced one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with taxes and fees in Kayak's stay total:
- By the Markt: the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027 was $118 (£88), a few steps from the square.
- 't Zand: the cheapest on June 11, 2027 was $160 (£120), a 4-star on the western side of the old town, the closest part of the center to the station.
The city adds an accommodation tax of $4.70 (£3.50; €4.20) per adult per night for 2026-2027, VAT included. Under-18s are exempt, and it appears as a separate line on the hotel bill.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The realistic public option is the train. Brussels Airport's own page lists a direct service to Bruges in 1 hour 25 minutes, and SNCB's timetable shows one each hour. The SNCB 2026 tariff gives a standard second-class fare of $30 (£23; €27) for this distance: $22 (£16.60; €19.70) for the journey plus the Brussels Airport supplement of $8 (£6; €7.10), which is added to every ticket to or from the airport. Buy one ticket to Brugge; the supplement is included automatically.
Neither the airport nor the city publishes a taxi fare for this trip. Brugge station is outside the canal ring. From there you walk into the center past the Minnewater, or take a De Lijn bus, $3.40 (£2.50; €3) for a single. A De Lijn day ticket is $10.10 (£7.60; €9), but you will not need it once you are inside the ring.
If you land at Charleroi, which Brussels also uses, you need a bus into Brussels first. Plan for a longer trip.
What to eat in 24 hours
- Frites from the stands on the Markt, eaten standing up under the Belfry.
- Stoverij, Flemish beef stewed in beer, at Bierbrasserie Cambrinus on Philipstockstraat, which also has a long beer list.
- Brugse Zot, the city's own beer, brewed at De Halve Maan on Walplein. The tour is $17.90 (£13.40; €16) and ends with a glass.
- A house tripel at Herberg De Garre, in a narrow alley off Breidelstraat.
- Pralines from Dumon on the Eiermarkt, a minute from the Markt.
- A waffle from one of the stalls around the Markt, Liège-style with caramelized sugar.
Book dinner on a Friday or Saturday. For more food-led trips, see the best food cities for 24 hours.
If you only have 12 hours
Bruges is a classic day trip from Brussels, London and Paris, and a long day covers the essentials. Do the Belfry first, then the Markt, the Burg, a boat trip and the Begijnhof, with frites and a beer along the way. You lose the best part, the evening after the tour groups leave. See our best one-night city breaks from London for trips that work as an overnight.
What 24 hours costs
Per person, two adults sharing a January room:
- Hotel, half a $118 (£88) double: $59 (£44)
- Accommodation tax: $4.70 (£3.50; €4.20)
- Train from Brussels Airport and back: $60 (£45; €54)
- Canal boat: $16.80 (£12.60; €15)
- De Halve Maan brewery tour: $17.90 (£13.40; €16)
- Belfry on a Saturday: $17.90 (£13.40; €16)
That is about $177 (£133) before food and drink, or about $198 (£148) with a June room. The train is the biggest single cost; from London, the Eurostar fare replaces it.
Getting there from the US and the UK
From the US, Brussels Airport has scheduled nonstops from New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Washington Dulles and Atlanta. From the UK there are flights to Brussels from Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh, and Ryanair flies from Manchester and Edinburgh to Charleroi. Ostend-Bruges airport, the closest to the city, has no flights from our UK or US hubs.
From London the train is the obvious choice: Eurostar to Brussels-Midi and an SNCB connection to Brugge, about 3 hours 30 minutes in all, bookable on one Eurostar ticket. See our ranking of city breaks by train from London.
US and UK passport holders need no visa for a short stay in Belgium. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been running at all Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026, so expect fingerprints and a photo on your first entry. ETIAS is not yet running; the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20). See our entry and transit rules guide.
When to go
Spring and early fall give you boats every day and evenings that are light enough for the canals. Summer brings the most day-trippers and the higher hotel price of our two dates. Winter is the reason many people come: the city's Winter Glow season runs from November 20, 2026 to January 31, 2027, and its two Christmas markets in the center are open from November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, until 11:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It ranks on our list of Christmas market city breaks. Art lovers should note that the Groeningemuseum closes on January 11, 2027 for a four-year refurbishment; part of its collection moves to the new BRUSK gallery next door, where the standard ticket is $22 (£16.80; €20).

Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough in Bruges?
One day covers the Markt, the Belfry, a boat and the Begijnhof. One night is better, because the old town empties in the evening and you can climb the Belfry before the tour groups arrive.
How do I get from Brussels Airport to Bruges?
Take the direct train, which Brussels Airport lists at 1 hour 25 minutes; SNCB runs one an hour. The standard second-class fare for the distance is $30 (£23; €27), including the airport supplement of $8 (£6; €7.10).
How much does it cost to climb the Belfry in Bruges?
$17.90 (£13.40; €16) for an adult at weekends and in summer, and $16.80 (£12.60; €15) on winter weekdays. Under-7s go free. Musea Brugge recommends booking online, and last entry is an hour before closing.
Do the Bruges canal boats run in winter?
Partly. Trips are guaranteed daily from March to October. From November to February the boat companies guarantee only one open jetty each day, on a rotation. A half-hour trip is $16.80 (£12.60; €15) and cannot be booked ahead.
When is the Bruges Christmas market in 2026?
The two Christmas markets in the center run from November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and to 11:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Is the Groeningemuseum open in 2027?
No. It closes on January 11, 2027 for a four-year refurbishment. Musea Brugge says the heart of its collection will be shown at BRUSK, its new gallery on the same site.
