24 Hours in Stockholm
Stockholm is built on islands, and a day here means crossing water. The Vasa Museum sits on Djurgården to the east, the Royal Palace and the old town fill the small island of Gamla Stan in the middle, and Södermalm rises to the south. None of it is far apart: each hop is a 15- to 25-minute walk or one short ride. The harder part is getting in, because Arlanda is about 23 miles (37 km) north of the city.
The fastest way in is the Arlanda Express: 18 minutes to Stockholm Central Station, at $34 (£26; SEK 340) one way. Rooms are better value than the train. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel with a guest score of 8 or more was $84 (£63) on Södermalm on Kayak for Friday, January 15, 2027, and $132 (£99) in Norrmalm for Friday, June 11, 2027. The plan below opens at the Vasa, crosses Gamla Stan in the afternoon and spends the evening on Södermalm.

The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Vasa Museum
Be on Djurgården at opening for the 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage, raised almost whole. Large bags are not allowed, so leave yours at the hotel; a prebought ticket does not skip the queue.
- 12:15 p.m.
Östermalms Saluhall
Walk back over the Djurgården bridge to the market hall on Östermalmstorg for lunch at one of the fish, deli or restaurant counters.
- 1:45 p.m.
Royal Palace
Twenty minutes south to Gamla Stan. One ticket covers the Royal Apartments, the Treasury and the Museum Three Crowns; parts can close for state receptions, so check the palace calendar.
- 3:30 p.m.
Stortorget
The old town's main square, with its painted merchants' houses. Take a fika break, coffee and a cinnamon bun, in one of the cafés on the lanes around it.
- 4:15 p.m.
Monteliusvägen
Cross to Södermalm and climb to this cliff-top footpath for the view back over Riddarholmen, City Hall and Lake Mälaren at dusk.
- 5:15 p.m.
Fotografiska
The photography museum in an old customs house on the Södermalm waterfront, open until 11 p.m. every day; its bar stays open to 11 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday.
- 8:00 p.m.
Pelikan
Dinner at the old Södermalm beer hall on Blekingegatan for Swedish meatballs or herring. It is open until 1 a.m.
- 8:30 a.m.
Stockholm City Hall
Next morning, walk the waterfront under the City Hall tower on Kungsholmen, then ten minutes to Stockholm C for the Arlanda Express.
The route is 4.8 miles (7.8 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
The Royal Palace is open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through December 2026 (closed December 24 and 25) but rooms can close for state receptions; the Vasa Museum opens daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (to 8 p.m. Wednesdays); Östermalms Saluhall closes at 5 p.m. on Saturdays
How the 24 hours work
Start with the one museum that matters most. The Vasa Museum opens at 10 a.m. daily, and adult entry is $19.70 (£14.70; SEK 195). A prebought ticket does not skip the line, so simply be there early, and leave large bags at the hotel because they are not allowed inside. The SL Djurgården ferry from Slussen is covered by the 24-hour travelcard.
Lunch is at Östermalms Saluhall, then walk to Gamla Stan for the Royal Palace, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through December 2026. The palace ticket is $22 (£16.60; SEK 220), $24 (£18.10; SEK 240) in some periods, and covers the Royal Apartments, the Treasury and the Museum Three Crowns. Rooms can close for official receptions, so check the palace calendar the day before. Then take a coffee on Stortorget and cross to Södermalm for the view from Monteliusvägen.
The evening is easy because Södermalm stays open. Fotografiska, the photography museum on the waterfront, opens until 11 p.m. every day for $19.70 (£14.70; SEK 195). Dinner is at Pelikan, open until 1 a.m. In winter the sun sets in mid-afternoon, so in January swap the order: palace first, Vasa after lunch, and the view after dark.
Where to stay for one night
Stay in Norrmalm, Gamla Stan or Södermalm. We priced all three on Kayak for one Friday night, two adults, 3-star or better, guest score 8 or higher, with the stay total including all taxes and fees, and checked each cheap result's address:
- January 15, 2027: $84 (£63) at Hotel Hellstens Malmgård, a 3-star rated 8.3 on Södermalm. A 4-star, Hotel Birger Jarl in Norrmalm, was $85 (£64). A $70 (£52) hotel listed under Södermalm is in Hammarby Sjöstad, off the island, so we left it out.
- June 11, 2027: $132 (£99) at Scandic Go, Upplandsgatan 4, a 3-star rated 8.6 in Norrmalm, a short walk from Stockholm C.
Norrmalm is best for the airport train. Södermalm is best for the evening, with Fotografiska and Pelikan nearby. Gamla Stan is the most atmospheric, but no Gamla Stan hotel was among the cheapest results on either date.
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The Arlanda Express runs nonstop to Stockholm Central Station in 18 minutes, every 12 to 15 minutes. An adult single is $34 (£26; SEK 340) and a return $65 (£48; SEK 640). Two adults traveling together pay $46 (£35; SEK 460) one way, and the operator advertises early-bird fares from $20 (£15; SEK 199). SL tickets are not valid on it.
The cheaper option is the SL commuter train from Arlanda Central Station, which Swedavia times at 38 minutes to Stockholm C. A single SL ticket including the station passage fee costs $20 (£15.10; SEK 200). If you already hold an SL travelcard, you pay only the passage fee, $15.80 (£11.90; SEK 157). Inside the city, the 24-hour SL travelcard is $18.10 (£13.60; SEK 180).
For a taxi, use the official ranks. Swedavia says its contracted companies charge at most $81 (£60; SEK 800) for one to four passengers to one address within the marked zone, and the meter runs beyond it. Ask the driver for the price before you set off.
What to eat in 24 hours
Swedish food is simple and good, and the setting matters. Five things to eat:
- Lunch at Östermalms Saluhall: the market hall on Östermalmstorg, with fish, deli and restaurant counters, open 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
- Meatballs at Pelikan: the Södermalm beer hall on Blekingegatan, open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., with a weekday lunch special from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Fika: coffee and a cinnamon bun, the Swedish afternoon break, in a café on the lanes off Stortorget.
- Pickled herring: a standard starter on traditional menus such as Pelikan's.
- Lunch at Fotografiska: the museum serves lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and to 4 p.m. at weekends, with its restaurant open for dinner Wednesday to Saturday.
Menu prices are not published online for these places, so we quote none.
If you only have 12 hours
Take the Arlanda Express in, walk 15 minutes to Gamla Stan for the Royal Palace and Stortorget, cross to Södermalm for the view from Monteliusvägen and finish at Fotografiska. That loop is about 2.5 miles (4 km). Drop the Vasa unless you can be on Djurgården by 10 a.m. With a long layover, see our best European cities for a 24-hour layover.
What 24 hours costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Hotel, one night, Södermalm, January 15, 2027 | $84 (£63) |
| Arlanda Express return | $65 (£48; SEK 640) |
| SL 24-hour travelcard | $18.10 (£13.60; SEK 180) |

| Royal Palace | $22 (£16.60; SEK 220) |
| Fotografiska | $19.70 (£14.70; SEK 195) |
On the ground that is $144 (£108; SEK 1,430) before food. With the January room the total is $228 (£171); with the June room, $276 (£207). Two commuter-train singles instead of the Arlanda Express cost $40 (£30; SEK 400). See how that compares with Copenhagen, where the metro from the airport is $4.50 (£3.40; DKK 30).
Getting there from the US and the UK
From the US, the airport's airlines table on Wikipedia now lists only one nonstop from the hubs we track: Delta from New York JFK, in season. SAS no longer appears with a US route from Arlanda, so most Americans connect, often through Copenhagen.
From the UK, British Airways and SAS fly from Heathrow, Norwegian from Gatwick and Edinburgh, Ryanair from Stansted, and SAS (plus Norwegian in season) from Manchester. There is no practical train from London.
Entry rules. US and UK citizens enter Sweden visa-free for short stays. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, so you register fingerprints and a photo on first entry. ETIAS is not running yet; the European Commission will announce the start several months ahead, and the fee is set at $22 (£16.80; €20).
When to go
Late spring and summer bring very long days and the waterfront at its best, at the highest room prices. Winter is short on daylight and cold, but cheap, and Advent is festive. The Skansen Christmas market, held since 1903, runs Fridays to Sundays from November 27 to December 20, 2026, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (to 4 p.m. on Sundays), in the open-air museum on Djurgården. Compare it on our Christmas market city breaks list. The climate table on this page has the monthly figures.
