24 Hours in Glasgow

Airport bus: about 20 min One night from $75 (£56) Most stops free

Glasgow gives you more for free than almost any city in the UK. The cathedral, the Necropolis, Kelvingrove and the Riverside Museum cost nothing, and the one paid stop in this plan, the Mackintosh Tearooms exhibition, is $13.30 (£10). A 3-star room on Queen Street on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $75 (£56).

The catch is getting there. From London, Avanti West Coast's fastest direct train takes 4 hours 31 minutes, so most visitors fly: British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair cover Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. From the US, the only nonstop is United's seasonal flight from Newark. Once you land, the center and the West End are linked by the Subway, a single loop line.

Scotland's most complete medieval cathedral, with St Mungo's tomb in the lower church. Free; October to March it opens 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday and only from 1 p.m. on Sundays. Parts close for services, so check the closures list.

    Free
  2. 11:00 a.m.

The 1903 tearooms designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald, now run by the National Trust for Scotland. The tearooms take bookings from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the exhibition upstairs is the paid part.

    $13.30 (£10)
  4. 2:15 p.m.

    Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

Take the Subway from Buchanan Street to Kelvinhall. Free, 22 galleries including Dalí's Christ of St John of the Cross, and a daily organ recital. Open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. other days.

    Free
  5. 4:45 p.m.

    Free
  6. 6:00 p.m.

    Free
  7. 8:30 p.m.

Whisky at The Pot Still, Hope Street

Back in the center by Subway, a family-run whisky bar at 154 Hope Street with more than 1,000 whiskies, cask ales and pies in the evening.

    Free
  8. 10:00 a.m.

    Riverside Museum (Saturday)

Free, no booking: Glasgow's transport museum on the Clyde, with a recreated street, old trams and the tall ship Glenlee outside. Take the Subway to Partick and walk down to the river.

    Free

The route is 6.3 miles (10.2 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Glasgow Cathedral opens only from 1 p.m. on Sundays and closes parts for services; Kelvingrove opens at 11 a.m. on Fridays and Sundays; the Mackintosh Tearooms' guided tours run only at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

How the 24 hours work

Start in the east with the oldest things. Glasgow Cathedral opens at 10 a.m. in winter, and the Necropolis rises behind it. Walk back through the center to Sauchiehall Street for lunch in the Mackintosh Tearooms, then take the Subway from Buchanan Street to Kelvinhall for Kelvingrove, which opens at 11 a.m. on Fridays.

From Kelvingrove, walk up through the park to the University of Glasgow and down to Ashton Lane for dinner. Ride the Subway back to the center for a whisky at The Pot Still on Hope Street. On Saturday morning, the Riverside Museum on the Clyde is free and opens at 10 a.m.

Sundays bend the plan: the cathedral opens only from 1 p.m., so swap the morning for Kelvingrove and the Riverside Museum. If it rains, shorten the Necropolis climb and the park walk; every other stop is indoors.

Where to stay for one night

We priced hotels between Merchant City and Blythswood on Kayak, for two adults on a Friday, 3 stars or better, guest rating 8 or more, with all taxes and fees, and checked each address:

  • Queen Street, between George Square and Buchanan Street: Travelodge Glasgow Queen St was the cheapest qualifying room on both dates, $75 (£56) on January 15 and $154 (£115) on June 11, 2027, a short walk from Queen Street station and the Subway.
  • Blythswood: Point A Hotel Glasgow listed the same $75 (£56) in January, a few blocks from The Pot Still.
  • Merchant City: Moxy Glasgow Merchant City was $173 (£130) in June, closest to the cathedral.

A cheaper Premier Inn south of the river was outside the center, so we left it out. Every price is the whole room for two, taxes included.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

Glasgow Airport has no train station. The Glasgow Airport Express 500, run by First Glasgow, leaves the terminal around the clock, every 10 minutes for most of the day and hourly at night. Its timetable reaches Bothwell Street, by Central Station, in about 20 minutes, then Queen Street Station and Buchanan Bus Station. The University of Glasgow's arrivals guide gives the adult single as $14.70 (£11) as of July 2026; First Bus's own fare pages were offline when we checked.

The same guide puts a taxi to the city at $40–$67 (£30–£50), depending on where you are going. Trains from London arrive at Glasgow Central; trains from Edinburgh arrive at Queen Street, with the fastest taking 50 minutes for $22 (£16.60).

What to eat in 24 hours

  • Lunch or afternoon tea at The Mackintosh Tearooms on Sauchiehall Street; call ahead if you want the Salon de Luxe.
  • Dinner at the Ubiquitous Chip, 12 Ashton Lane, serving Scottish food since 1971, with a brasserie for sharing plates and a full restaurant.
  • A haggis, neeps and tatties pie at The Pot Still, 154 Hope Street; the full menu runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a few pies in the evening.
  • A dram from more than 1,000 whiskies at the same bar, or at the Chip's Wee Whisky Bar on Ashton Lane.
  • Coffee at Kelvingrove's coffee shop, on the upper ground floor, looking over the main hall.

None of these venues published prices on the pages we checked. For cities where food is the main event, see the best food cities for 24 hours.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the cathedral, the Mackintosh Tearooms and Kelvingrove. Drop the Necropolis climb and the university, and have dinner in the center instead of the West End. A day trip from Edinburgh works well, since the fastest trains take 50 minutes.

Getting there from the US and the UK

United flies a seasonal nonstop from Newark to Glasgow; no other US hub on our list does. From other US cities, connect in London or Dublin. US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20) on GOV.UK.

From London, British Airways flies from Heathrow and Gatwick, easyJet from Gatwick and Stansted, and Ryanair from Stansted. There are no flights from Manchester or Edinburgh. By rail, the fastest Euston to Glasgow Central train takes 4 hours 31 minutes. See the best one-night breaks in the UK and 24 hours in London if you are starting there.

When to go

Glasgow is cheap in winter and the daytime plan is mostly indoors, so January is a good bet; days are very short, so do the Necropolis before lunch. Summer brings long evenings in the West End and higher room prices. The city had not published its 2026 Christmas program when we checked; the Riverside Museum holds a Christmas market on November 28 and 29, 2026. Kelvingrove turns 125 this year and opens a Billy Connolly exhibition in June 2027. See the best solo city breaks and the best breaks for families.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough in Glasgow?

For the center and the West End, yes. The cathedral, the Mackintosh Tearooms, Kelvingrove and the Riverside Museum fit into one day and a morning. A second day adds the Burrell Collection or Loch Lomond.

How do you get from Glasgow Airport to the city center?

Take the Glasgow Airport Express 500 bus. It runs 24 hours and reaches Bothwell Street, by Central Station, in about 20 minutes, then Queen Street and Buchanan Bus Station. A single was $14.70 (£11) as of July 2026.

Is Kelvingrove free?

Yes. Entry is free, with donations welcome. It opens 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Sundays.

Can you visit the Mackintosh Tearooms without eating?

Yes. The exhibition is a separate ticket, $13.30 (£10) for adults and $6.70 (£5) for children, and guided tours run at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and must be booked. National Trust for Scotland members go free.

How long is the train from London to Glasgow?

Avanti West Coast's fastest direct trains from London Euston to Glasgow Central take 4 hours 31 minutes. Many trains take longer, so flying from Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted is often quicker.
