24 Hours in Liverpool

London to Liverpool: 2 h 16 min One night from $69 (£52) Airport bus $2.70 (£2)

Liverpool is one of the cheapest good nights out in the UK. A 3-star room in the center on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $69 (£52), the airport bus costs $2.70 (£2), and Avanti West Coast's fastest direct train from London Euston to Lime Street takes 2 hours 16 minutes. Everything in this plan is a walk from the station: the Royal Albert Dock, Pier Head, Bold Street, the Anglican cathedral and Mathew Street.

The paid stops, the Beatles Story, the river cruise, the cathedral tower and the Cavern Club, add up to $64 (£48). The museums are free. Two things to know before you book: the national museums switch to winter hours on November 2, 2026 and close on Mondays, and the Cavern Club turns 70 on January 16, 2027, the day after our January price check.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 10:00 a.m.

The Beatles Story, Royal Albert Dock

Start with the band's story in the dock vaults, from Hamburg to the Cavern and Abbey Road, with an audio guide included. Open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. Saturdays); booking online fixes your timeslot. The entrance lift is out of order, so entry is by 19 steps.

    $27 (£20)
  2. 11:45 a.m.

    Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head

Free and a five-minute walk along the waterfront. From November 2 it keeps winter hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday. Its 70 Years of The Cavern Club exhibition opens January 16, 2027.

    Free
  3. 1:00 p.m.

    Mersey Ferries sightseeing river cruise

Ferries leave Pier Head on the hour, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays; winter weekends end at 3 p.m. The loop takes in the Three Graces from the water and comes back to Pier Head. Check the service-update banner on the day.

    $18.70 (£14)
  4. 2:15 p.m.

    Late lunch on Bold Street

Walk up through Liverpool ONE to Bold Street. Mowgli at No. 69 is the chain's original 2014 branch, open from noon; the treacle tamarind fries are the order.

    Free
  5. 3:30 p.m.

    Liverpool Cathedral and tower

Entry to the cathedral is free, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The tower ticket covers two lifts and 108 steps to the roof; last tower entry is 4:30 p.m., and it closes some Sundays for bell ringing.

    $10.70 (£8)
  6. 6:30 p.m.

Dinner at Baltic Market, Cains Brewery Village

A food hall in the old brewery on Stanhope Street, about 0.6 miles south of the cathedral. Open Friday noon to 11 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; walk in, or book one of the few reservable tables.

    Free
  7. 8:30 p.m.

Live music at the Cavern Club, Mathew Street

Open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays with live music all day. Pay on the door, card only; an all day and night pass is $11.30 (£8.50). The free Cavern Pub across the street has bands from 4 p.m. on Fridays.

    $8 (£6)
  8. 10:00 a.m.

    Walker Art Gallery (Saturday)

Free, on William Brown Street across from Lime Street station, so it is the last stop before your train. Winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday.

    Free

The route is 6.1 miles (9.8 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

National Museums Liverpool (Museum of Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery) closed Mondays from November 2, 2026 outside school holidays; Liverpool Cathedral tower opens only from noon on Sundays and closes some Sundays for bell ringing; Baltic Market closed Mondays and Tuesdays; Mersey Ferries cruises end at 3 p.m. on winter weekends

How the 24 hours work

Start on the waterfront, because that is where the morning light and the queues are. The Beatles Story opens at 9 a.m. in the dock vaults; book online to fix a timeslot. Walk five minutes north to the Museum of Liverpool at Pier Head, which is free, then take the 1 p.m. Mersey ferry from the landing stage outside. Cruises leave on the hour until 4 p.m. on weekdays, and until 3 p.m. on winter weekends.

After the ferry, walk up through Liverpool ONE to Bold Street for a late lunch, then on to the cathedral at the top of the hill. Entry is free; the tower is the paid part, with last entry at 4:30 p.m. Baltic Market is about 0.6 miles (1 km) downhill for dinner, and the Cavern Club on Mathew Street runs until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Save the Walker Art Gallery for Saturday morning, across from Lime Street.

Mondays break this plan from November to Easter: the Museum of Liverpool and the Walker are closed outside school holidays. If it rains, skip the ferry and give the Museum of Liverpool an extra hour.

Where to stay for one night

We priced hotels in the city center on Kayak, for two adults on a Friday, 3 stars or better, guest rating 8 or more, with all taxes and fees, and checked each address:

  • Cavern Quarter and Castle Street: The Z Hotel Liverpool on North John Street was the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027, at $69 (£52). Rooms there are small, but you are two minutes from Mathew Street.
  • Lime Street and Queen Square: Travelodge Liverpool Central on Old Haymarket was the cheapest on June 11, 2027, at $122 (£91); its rating rests on few reviews. The Liner Hotel by Lime Street (8.6) was $131 (£98).
  • Ropewalks: the 4-star Ropewalks Hotel was $77 (£58) in January, the best value for Bold Street and the cathedral.

Every price is the whole room for two, taxes included. The Georgian Quarter, just outside the core, had a 3-star room at $113 (£85) in June.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

From Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the airport names the Arriva 500 as its fastest bus. Merseytravel times it at 38 minutes to Liverpool ONE Bus Station, and it also stops on Great Charlotte Street for Lime Street station. Every bus single in the Liverpool City Region is capped at $2.70 (£2); pay the driver by card or cash. The 86A takes the same 38 minutes inbound on Merseytravel's timetable and runs every 7 to 8 minutes on weekday daytimes.

Black cabs wait at the rank outside the terminal and take cards, but the airport publishes no standard fare. Pre-booked private hire cars pick up in the car parks.

Most visitors come by train. Lime Street is at the top of the center, a ten-minute walk from Bold Street and about 20 minutes from the docks.

What to eat in 24 hours

  • Treacle tamarind fries at Mowgli, 69 Bold Street, the original branch of the Indian street-food chain, open from noon daily.
  • A food-hall dinner at Baltic Market, Cains Brewery Village on Stanhope Street: wood-fired pizza from Little Furnace, Turkish grill from Çat Kapı, Thai from Spice Thai.
  • Coffee at the Fab4 Café under the 1960s-style arches at the Albert Dock; a Beatles Story ticket includes entry.
  • A pint at the Cavern Pub on Mathew Street, free to enter, with bands from 4 p.m. on Fridays and 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
  • Scouse, the meat stew that gave Liverpudlians their nickname, on pub and café menus across the center.

None of these venues publish fixed prices for these dishes on their own sites, so we do not quote them. For cities where food is the main event, see the best food cities for 24 hours.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the Beatles Story, the Museum of Liverpool and the ferry, then walk up Bold Street to the cathedral. Drop Baltic Market and the Cavern if you are catching an evening train. A day trip from London on an early Avanti service works, and so does a day from Manchester, which is under an hour away by train.

You will not need a day ticket for this route. If you want one, the off-peak Saveaway covers buses, Merseyrail and the ferry crossings in Liverpool for $6.80 (£5.10), on a MetroSmart card that costs $1.30 (£1). It does not cover the sightseeing cruise.

Getting there from the US and the UK

No US airport flies nonstop to Liverpool, and neither do London, Manchester or Edinburgh. From the US, fly to Manchester or London and take the train; 24 hours in London pairs well with this. US citizens need a UK ETA, $27 (£20) on GOV.UK. Irish and British passport holders do not.

From London, Avanti West Coast's fastest direct trains from Euston to Lime Street take 2 hours 16 minutes. See the best city breaks by train from London and the best one-night breaks in the UK. Liverpool's airport does fly to Dublin with Aer Lingus and Ryanair, so Dublin is an easy second stop.

When to go

Winter is the bargain: our January room cost just over half the June price. Days are short, so do the ferry before 3 p.m. and keep the museums for the dark hours. Mid-January 2027 has a bonus: the Cavern Club's 70th anniversary falls on January 16, when the Museum of Liverpool opens its Cavern exhibition. A Liverpool Christmas Market returns in 2026, run by Underbelly with skating at St George's Hall, but the organizers had not published dates when we checked. Tate Liverpool is in a small temporary space at Mann Island until its dock building reopens in 2027. See the best solo city breaks and the best breaks for families.
