24 Hours in Boston
Boston is the easiest city in this guide to arrive in. The Silver Line SL1 bus leaves from the terminal curb at Logan and is free from the airport; the MBTA's Friday timetable has it at South Station 25 minutes after Terminal A and 18 minutes after Terminal E, where the international flights land. You are downtown before you have finished checking your messages.
The day itself is short distances. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile line of 16 historic sites, and the first half of it, from Boston Common to the North End, is the morning. The Museum of Fine Arts stays open until 10 p.m. on Fridays, which lets you take the afternoon slowly and still eat oysters on Salem Street at 7:30 p.m. Paid entries in the plan total $46 (£34).

The 24-hour plan
- 10:00 a.m.
Boston Common, start of the Freedom Trail
Start where the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail starts and follow the red line in the sidewalk past the State House and the Granary Burying Ground. Walking it is free.
- 11:30 a.m.
Lunch at Quincy Market
The trail passes Faneuil Hall. Quincy Market's food hall has over 25 eateries; get a cup of clam chowder or a lobster roll at the counters. Open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
- 1:00 p.m.
Paul Revere House
Cross into the North End to 19 North Square, the oldest house on the trail. A 30-minute visit. Closed Mondays in January, February and March.
- 1:45 p.m.
Old North Church
Five minutes away, the steeple of the 'one if by land' lanterns. The self-guided Discovery Pass is the basic ticket; the bell chamber tour costs more.
- 3:30 p.m.
Museum of Fine Arts
One Green Line ride to the Fenway. On Fridays the MFA stays open until 10 p.m., so two unhurried hours fit before dinner. Closed Tuesdays; advance tickets recommended.
- 7:30 p.m.
Dinner at Neptune Oyster, North End
Back to the North End for raw-bar oysters and the hot buttered lobster roll at 63 Salem Street. Walk-ins only, so expect to queue. Finish with a cannoli at Mike's Pastry on Hanover Street, open until 10 p.m.
- 9:00 a.m.
Public Garden and Beacon Hill (Saturday)
Saturday morning, cross the Public Garden and climb into Beacon Hill's brick lanes while they are empty. Free.
- 10:00 a.m.
Boston Public Library, Copley Square
Ten minutes west, the McKim Building's reading room and courtyard. Free, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Back Bay station next door has trains to New York.
The route is 7.9 miles (12.7 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.
MFA closed Tuesdays; Paul Revere House closed Mondays in January, February and March; Old North Church opens at 12:30 p.m. on Sundays; Boston Public Library opens at 11 a.m. on Sundays
How the 24 hours work
Morning is history, afternoon is art, evening is food. You walk from Boston Common past the State House to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market for an early lunch, then into the North End for the Paul Revere House ($6 (£4.50)) and Old North Church ($10 (£7.50) for the self-guided pass). After that, one Green Line ride takes you to the MFA ($30 (£22)), and the subway brings you back to the North End for dinner. Saturday morning is the Public Garden, Beacon Hill and the Boston Public Library, next to Back Bay station.
Nothing on the route needs a timed ticket. The MFA recommends buying in advance for easier entry, but does not require it. The one queue to plan for is Neptune Oyster, which takes no reservations.
Watch the closing days. The MFA is closed Tuesdays. The Paul Revere House closes on Mondays in January, February and March and keeps winter hours of 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. from November to mid-April. On a wet day, shorten the trail at Faneuil Hall and give the MFA three hours instead of two.
Where to stay for one night
We priced Back Bay, Downtown (Faneuil Hall and the Financial District) and the North End on Expedia, for two adults on a Friday with taxes and fees, 3 stars or better and guest ratings of 8 or more:
- Back Bay: the Copley Square Hotel was the cheapest qualifying room on January 15, 2027, at $146 (£109). Back Bay station is a few blocks away for the train on.
- Downtown: Harborside Inn was $162 (£121) in January. In June, Downtown had the cheapest qualifying room, Club Quarters Hotel Faneuil Hall at $326 (£244) on June 11, 2027, a two-minute walk from Quincy Market.
- Beacon Hill and the North End are quieter, but neither turned up a cheaper qualifying room than the two above on our dates.
June is a different price class. Back Bay's cheapest June room was $447 (£335). If summer is your only window, look at Philadelphia, where a Center City room in June was $173 (£130).
Getting in from the airport (and the station)
The SL1 stops at every Logan terminal and runs to South Station, where it meets the Red Line and Amtrak. The MBTA says service from Logan is always free. On the ride back you need a fare, which the $11 (£8.20) 1-Day Pass covers. A second option is the free Massport shuttle to Airport station on the Blue Line, which connects at State and Government Center; a subway ride costs $2.40 (£1.80).
Taxis and rideshares use the Ted Williams Tunnel, so tolls are added. Massport's taxi page could not be read when we checked, so we do not quote a fare. For most hotels in this plan the free bus plus a short walk is quicker door to door than you would expect.
By train, Acela arrives at South Station and Back Bay. The fastest Acela on the current Amtrak timetable takes 3 hours 53 minutes from Moynihan Train Hall in New York.
What to eat in 24 hours
- Clam chowder at Quincy Market. The food hall behind Faneuil Hall has over 25 local eateries and opens 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
- A lobster roll at Neptune Oyster, 63 Salem Street. It comes hot with butter or cold with mayo, and the raw bar runs until 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends. Walk-ins only.
- Oysters on the half shell at the same counter, or at the Union Oyster House on Union Street, on the Freedom Trail.
- A cannoli at Mike's Pastry, Hanover Street, open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
None of these places published prices on their own sites when we checked, so we do not quote them. For cities where eating is the whole trip, see the best food cities for 24 hours.
If you only have 12 hours
Keep the Freedom Trail from Boston Common to Old North Church and dinner in the North End. Drop the MFA and the Saturday morning. That is about four hours of walking and eating, and it leaves time to get back to Logan on the SL1 or the Blue Line.
Logan is unusually close: it sits about 2.5 miles (4 km) from downtown in a straight line, on the other side of the harbor. That makes Boston one of the few US cities where a long daytime layover can include a real lunch in town.
What 24 hours costs
| Item | January | June |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel, one night (whole room) | $146 (£109) | $326 (£244) |
| SL1 from Logan | $0 (£0) | $0 (£0) |
| MBTA 1-Day Pass (includes the ride back) | $11 (£8.20) | $11 (£8.20) |
| Paul Revere House, Old North Church, MFA | $46 (£34) | $46 (£34) |
| Total | $203 (£152) | $383 (£287) |
Food is extra. The 1-Day Pass gives unlimited subway and bus travel for 24 hours from first use. Contactless cards work at the gates for single rides but not for passes, so buy the pass as a CharlieTicket.
Getting there from the US and the UK
Every US hub on our list flies nonstop to Logan: JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. From New York the train is the calmer choice; see the best overnight trips from New York and pair this with 24 hours in New York if you have a long weekend.
From the UK, Logan has nonstops from Heathrow (American, British Airways, Delta, JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic), Gatwick (JetBlue) and Edinburgh (Delta and JetBlue). British passport holders need an approved ESTA, which costs $41 (£30) on the official CBP site and lasts two years. Our entry rules guide explains how to avoid paying a third-party agent more.
When to go
Winter is cheap and cold, with short days that make the Freedom Trail a brisk walk; it is also when the Paul Revere House closes on Mondays. Late spring and early fall are the best balance of light and price. Summer and graduation season push central rooms past $300 (£225), as our June price shows. Faneuil Hall Marketplace says it is planning a Christmas market, but it had not published 2026 dates when we checked.

Where Boston ranks
Tickets and tours you can book

Boston: Freedom Trail History Small Group Walking Tour
Meets inside Boston Common at the Boston Foundation Monument, opposite 50 Beacon St, and finishes at Copp's Hill Terrace in the North End, which sets up lunch there. The listing is muddled about museum entry, so assume paid sites such as the Paul Revere House are extra; tipping is optional.

Boston: History Pub Crawl Tour Along the Freedom Trail
Drinks are bought at each stop and are not in the price; 21 and over with ID. The $50 seen was a sale price, struck through from $59.

Boston: North End & Little Italy Food Tour with Local Dishes
Choose the 2-hour express or the 3-hour full tour; gratuities are included. The meeting point is a map pin that depends on the option, around Faneuil Hall and Haymarket, so check the voucher.
