24 Hours in Vancouver

Canada Line: 27 min downtown One night from $129 (£97) Seawall, ferry and old town

Vancouver gets you downtown fast. The Canada Line runs from YVR-Airport station to Waterfront in about 27 minutes, every 6 to 15 minutes, for $8.30 (£6.20; C$11.60) on a weekday before 6:30 p.m., including the airport AddFare. From there, the day is a loop on foot and by little ferry: around Stanley Park, across False Creek to Granville Island, through Chinatown and Gastown, and along the harbor.

The catch is what one night leaves out. The reason most people come is the backdrop: the North Shore mountains, the trails, the ski hills. A 24-hour plan sees them from the seawall but does not reach them. Hotels swing hard by season, too. On Kayak, the cheapest well-rated downtown double was $129 (£97) on Friday, January 15, 2027 and $345 (£258) on June 11, 2027.

The 24-hour plan

  1. 10:00 a.m.

    Stanley Park seawall

Walk or cycle the flat seawall around the park, about 5.6 miles (9 km). Bike rentals cluster at Denman and Georgia; Mobi bike-share is the pay-as-you-go option. The park is free.

    Free
  2. 12:30 p.m.

Lunch at Granville Island Public Market

Finish at English Bay and take a little Aquabus or False Creek Ferries boat across to Granville Island. The market hall is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (closed Mondays in January only). Eat at the counters inside.

    Free
  3. 2:45 p.m.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

Aquabus to Yaletown, then walk east to Chinatown. A walled classical Chinese garden of ponds, rocks and pavilions. Winter hours end at 4:30 p.m., and it is closed Mondays from November to April.

    $10 (£7.50; C$14)
  4. 4:15 p.m.

Canada Place and the Coal Harbour seawall

Walk north through Gastown to the sail-roofed cruise terminal and the harbor promenade, with the North Shore mountains across the water. Free; in winter, this is sunset.

    Free
  5. 7:00 p.m.

Dinner in Gastown, by the Steam Clock

Back on Water Street, the cobbled spine of the old town by the Steam Clock, for dinner and a drink.

    Free
  6. 9:00 a.m.

    Waterfront Station

Next morning, coffee near the station and the Canada Line back to YVR. Trips to the airport pay no AddFare, and on a Saturday the 1-zone fare applies all day.

    $2.50 (£1.90; C$3.50)

The route is 4.6 miles (7.4 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden closed Mondays from November 1 to April 30 and on December 25 and January 1; Granville Island Public Market closed Mondays in January and on December 25, December 26 and January 1.

How the 24 hours work

Do the big walk first. The seawall around Stanley Park is about 5.6 miles (9 km) and mostly flat; on a bike it takes the morning with stops, on foot you can cut across the park. Finish at English Bay and take an Aquabus or False Creek Ferries boat over to Granville Island for lunch at the Public Market. A second boat takes you to Yaletown, and a walk east along False Creek brings you to Chinatown and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

From the garden, Gastown is a few blocks north, and Canada Place is just past it on the harbor, the right spot for the late afternoon light. Dinner is back in Gastown on Water Street. Nothing in the plan needs a timed ticket.

Where the plan bends: the garden is closed on Mondays from November to April, and in winter it closes at 4:30 p.m., so keep the afternoon in order. The market hall closes on Mondays in January only. In heavy rain, which is common in winter, swap the bike for the bus and spend longer at the market. If you have a second day, the mountains are the reason to take it.

Where to stay for one night

Stay on the downtown peninsula. Prices are Kayak's cheapest 3-star-or-better double with a guest rating of 8 or more, taxes included, for Friday nights, filtered to Downtown, Gastown, Yaletown and Coal Harbour.

  • Granville Street and the Yaletown edge: Hotel Belmont Vancouver MGallery, a 4-star rated 8.3, was the cheapest on both dates, $129 (£97) in January and $345 (£258) in June. The Burrard, a 3-star, matched it in January. This is the nightlife end of downtown.
  • Coal Harbour: quieter, on the seawall and close to Stanley Park; the Coast Coal Harbour hotel was $184 (£138) in January.
  • The West End, just outside our area: by Davie Street and English Bay. In June, Sandman Suites on Davie was $321 (£241), a little cheaper than anything in our filter.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

The Canada Line leaves from YVR-Airport station, linked to both terminals. Tourism Vancouver gives about 25 minutes to Vancouver City Centre and 27 to Waterfront. Pay by tapping a contactless card at the gate. Every trip that starts at the airport includes a $4.60 (£3.50; C$6.50) AddFare: the total is $8.30 (£6.20; C$11.60) on weekdays before 6:30 p.m. and $7.10 (£5.30; C$10) on evenings, weekends and holidays. Going back to the airport, you pay only the normal fare.

A taxi uses a flat zone fare to downtown of $33 (£25; C$46). YVR says the $2.80 (£2.10; C$4) passenger load charge is included in all flat zone fares. Trains from Seattle arrive at Pacific Central Station, one SkyTrain stop from Chinatown.

What to eat in 24 hours

Vancouver eats well across the Pacific. Four things to fit in:

  • Lunch at Granville Island Public Market, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the coffee counters open earlier. Graze at the food stalls and the bakeries, and eat by the water.
  • Dim sum or noodles in Chinatown, around the Chinese garden, after your visit.
  • Dinner in Gastown, on Water Street and the streets off it, the cobbled old town where most visitors end the evening.
  • Sushi anywhere downtown: Japanese food is part of daily life here, from takeout counters on Robson Street to sit-down restaurants.

We have not printed restaurant prices because none of these publish them reliably online. See our best food cities for 24 hours for comparison.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the harbor and Gastown. Ride the Canada Line to Waterfront, walk the Coal Harbour seawall to the edge of Stanley Park and back, and eat in Gastown. Drop Granville Island and the garden. With a long layover, the return trip to the airport takes about half an hour, so leave generous time for the train and security.

What 24 hours costs

Per person, at the official fares:

  • Canada Line in on a Friday: $8.30 (£6.20; C$11.60); back on Saturday: $2.50 (£1.90; C$3.50)
  • Aquabus day pass for the boat hops: $16 (£12; C$22)
  • Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden: $10 (£7.50; C$14)

That is $36 (£27; C$51) before food and a bike. With the January hotel, the total is about $165 (£124) per room; in June it is about $381 (£286). A TransLink DayPass costs $8.90 (£6.70; C$12.55) if you would rather ride buses than walk.

Getting there from the US and the UK

YVR is well connected. All ten of our US hubs have nonstops: JFK, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth all year, and Newark, Boston, Washington Dulles and Atlanta seasonally, per the airport's route table on Wikipedia. From the UK, Heathrow has year-round flights and Gatwick a seasonal one. A short hop from the West Coast makes a one-nighter realistic; from London it is a long-haul trip, better as a stopover on a bigger journey. For a US comparison, see 24 hours in San Francisco.

Entry: US citizens need no eTA. Canada's border agency recommends a valid passport, and NEXUS members can use the card. British citizens flying in need an eTA, $5 (£3.70; C$7) on the Government of Canada site.

When to go

Summer is dry, long and expensive, which is why the June hotel price is nearly three times the January one. Winter is mild for Canada but wet, with short days. Spring and early fall are the best balance for this plan. The page's climate table has the monthly numbers.
