24 Hours in San Francisco

Ferries leave Pier 33 about every half hour from 8:45 a.m. Alcatraz City Cruises sells the Day Tour, with the ferry and the cellhouse audio tour, for $48 (£36) including fees. You can stay on the island until the last boat, but be back by lunch. The Night Tour, $60 (£45), is the backup if the mornings are gone, and it is also marked as likely to sell out.

After lunch at the Ferry Building, walk up Market Street to the Powell and Market turntable. Between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. you must prepay there, so load the fare in MuniMobile or on a Clipper card first. The Powell-Hyde line climbs over Nob Hill to Lombard Street. From the crooked block it is a walk east to City Lights on Columbus Avenue, then down Grant Avenue through Chinatown, then dinner at Tadich Grill on California Street. Vesuvio, next to City Lights, is open until 2 a.m. on a Friday.

Friday night is the right one. Tadich Grill is closed on Sundays and serves only from 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market runs on Saturday mornings, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Alcatraz closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. If the island is closed or sold out, the 90-minute Bay Discovery Cruise from the same pier circles it without docking.

We searched Kayak for two adults on a Friday, total price with all taxes and fees, 3 stars or better and a guest rating of 8 or more, in the Financial District, the Union Square area and SoMa:

• Financial District: Club Quarters Hotel in San Francisco was the cheapest qualifying room on both dates, at $146 (£109) on January 15, 2027 and $196 (£147) on June 11, 2027, rated 8.0. It is a short walk from Chinatown and Tadich Grill.
• Union Square area: Palihotel San Francisco was $177 (£133) in January. In June the Orchard Hotel was $246 (£184), rated 8.8.
• SoMa: Hotel Zelos was $204 (£153) in January and Hotel Zetta $243 (£182) in June.

For this plan, the Financial District wins: Pier 33, the Ferry Building, North Beach and the Saturday market are all on foot.

The SFO BART station is in the International Terminal; the free AirTrain links it to Terminals 1 to 3. Trains reach Powell Street in 29 minutes, Montgomery in 30 and Embarcadero in 32 on BART's timetable. The adult fare to downtown is $11.80 (£8.80). BART no longer sells paper tickets: tap a contactless card or phone at the gate, or use Clipper. The first train from SFO is 4:58 a.m. on weekdays, 5:47 a.m. on Saturdays and 8:08 a.m. on Sundays, and service runs until midnight.

Taxis run on the meter: $4.15 (£3.10) at the flag, $0.65 (£0.50) for each fifth of a mile and a $6 (£4.50) SFO pickup fee. The SFMTA publishes no flat fare from the airport.

• Oysters at Hog Island Oyster Co. in the Ferry Building, open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily as a building; counters keep their own hours.
• Sourdough from Acme Bread Company, also in the Ferry Building.
• Seafood at Tadich Grill, 240 California Street, open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday.
• Breakfast at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. year-round.
• A drink at Vesuvio Cafe, 255 Columbus Avenue, open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

SFO is about 11 miles (18 km) from downtown in a straight line, and BART makes a daytime layover of eight hours or more workable. Keep Alcatraz if you hold a ticket; otherwise ride the cable car, walk North Beach and Chinatown, and eat at the Ferry Building. Leave plenty of time to get back through security.

SFO has nonstops from every other US hub on our list: JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. A short hop pairs it with Las Vegas, and it is a gateway to Vancouver up the coast.

Fall is the clearest season, and spring is good too. Summer is often foggy and cool by the water, so bring a layer for the Alcatraz ferry even in June, and book the island further ahead.
