24 Hours in Quebec City

Inside the walls from $96 (£72) Old town on foot, no metro Christmas market from Nov 19

Quebec City is the most compact trip on this site. Everything in the plan below sits inside or just under the walls of Old Quebec, and you never need a bus between breakfast and bed. The fortress, the Château Frontenac and the Lower Town are a few minutes apart on foot, joined by stairs and a funicular down the cliff.

It is also cheap to sleep in the middle of it in winter. On Kayak, the lowest price for a 3-star double rated 8 or better inside the walls on Friday, January 15, 2027 was $96 (£72), taxes in. The catch is the airport: the public bus takes about an hour, so most visitors use the flat-fare taxi. Paid entries in the plan total $35 (£26; C$49).

The 24-hour plan

  1. 10:00 a.m.

    Citadelle of Quebec guided tour

The star-shaped fortress is a working army base, so visits are guided only: a 60-minute outdoor tour plus the Royal 22e Regiment Museum. Open daily from 10 a.m. in fall and winter.

    $15.70 (£11.70; C$22)
  2. 11:30 a.m.

Terrasse Dufferin below the Château Frontenac

Walk down from the Citadelle to the long wooden boardwalk under the Château Frontenac, with the St. Lawrence River and the Lévis shore below. Free.

    Free
  3. 12:30 p.m.

    Lunch at Aux Anciens Canadiens

Traditional Quebec cooking at 34 Rue Saint-Louis, two minutes from the terrace. Open every day from noon to 9 p.m.; lunch is the easier table to get.

    Free
  4. 2:00 p.m.

    Rue du Petit-Champlain, Lower Town

Drop to the Lower Town by the Breakneck Stairs or the funicular from the terrace, and walk the narrow shopping street at the foot of the cliff.

    Free
  5. 2:45 p.m.

    Place Royale and Notre-Dame-des-Victoires

The small square in the Lower Town where the French colony began, with the stone church of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires on one side. Free to walk.

    Free
  6. 3:15 p.m.

    Musée de la civilisation

Two blocks away on Rue Dalhousie, the city's big museum of Quebec history and society. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Mondays from September to late June. Adults 18 to 34 pay less.

    $19.20 (£14.40; C$27)
  7. 7:00 p.m.

    Dinner on Rue Saint-Jean

Climb back to the Upper Town and walk Rue Saint-Jean out through the Porte Saint-Jean, the main restaurant and bar street of Old Quebec and the Faubourg.

    Free
  8. 9:00 p.m.

Night walk at the Château Frontenac

End on the terrace again: the hotel and the walls are floodlit, and from mid-November the German Christmas Market sites around Place d'Armes are steps away.

    Free
  9. 9:00 a.m.

    Breakfast at Paillard, Rue Saint-Jean

Next morning, a bakery breakfast at 1097 Rue Saint-Jean before the bus or a taxi back to YQB.

    Free

The route is 2.2 miles (3.6 km) from stop to stop in a straight line; the real walk is longer.

Musée de la civilisation is closed Mondays from September 8 to June 23; the Citadelle is open daily but by guided tour only; the German Christmas Market opens Thursday to Sunday only until December 20.

How the 24 hours work

The order follows the hill. The Citadelle opens at 10 a.m. from September to May and is visited only on a 60-minute guided tour, so it goes first while you have energy for the ramparts. From there you walk down to Terrasse Dufferin, the boardwalk under the Château Frontenac, and eat lunch two minutes away at Aux Anciens Canadiens on Rue Saint-Louis.

After lunch you drop to the Lower Town by the Breakneck Stairs or the funicular, walk Rue du Petit-Champlain and Place Royale, and spend the late afternoon in the Musée de la civilisation, which closes at 5 p.m. Dinner is up the hill on Rue Saint-Jean, and the night ends back on the terrace with the hotel lit up. Nothing needs a timed ticket.

Where the plan bends: the museum is closed on Mondays from September to late June, so on a Monday spend the afternoon on the Plains of Abraham instead. In deep winter the stairs and the terrace can be icy; the funicular is the safer way down. Pair the trip with 24 hours in Montreal if you want a second night with more food and nightlife.

Where to stay for one night

Stay inside the walls or just below them. Prices are Kayak's cheapest 3-star-or-better double with a guest rating of 8 or more, taxes included, for a Friday night.

  • Upper Town, inside the walls: Hôtel Sainte-Anne, a 3-star rated 8.5, was the cheapest on both dates: $96 (£72) on January 15, 2027 and $155 (£116) on June 11, 2027. Hotel Le Saint-Paul and Hotel Champlain were close behind in January.
  • A 4-star splurge: Hotel Clarendon, rated 9.0, was $112 (£84) in January, the best value 4-star we saw.
  • Lower Town and the Old Port: quieter in the evening, on the flat, and closer to the museum, with the climb to Rue Saint-Jean at dinner time.

Expect cobbles and stairs. Pack light, because many small hotels in old buildings have no elevator.

Getting in from the airport (and the station)

The fastest public option is RTC route 80 from stop 7300 outside the terminal to Terminus Parc-Victoria in Saint-Roch. On RTC's Friday timetable, afternoon buses leave about every 30 minutes and take about an hour. From Parc-Victoria it is about 1 mile (1.6 km) uphill to the walls. A ticket is $2.70 (£2.10; C$3.85) on a card, or $2.80 (£2.10; C$4) in exact cash on the bus; the airport has an RTC ticket machine across from the check-in counters. Route 76 is the other option, to Sainte-Foy in under 30 minutes, with a change to the 800 or 801 into town.

The taxi is simpler. The airport publishes a flat day fare to downtown of $29 (£22; C$41), plus a $0.60 (£0.50; C$0.90) fee and tax; Old Quebec is inside the downtown zone. Trains from Montreal arrive at Gare du Palais, at the foot of the Upper Town.

What to eat in 24 hours

Quebec City's cooking is hearty and French-Canadian. Four things to fit in:

  • A Quebec lunch at Aux Anciens Canadiens, 34 Rue Saint-Louis, open daily from noon to 9 p.m. The menu is traditional Quebec cooking, and lunch is easier to book than dinner.
  • Dinner on Rue Saint-Jean, the main restaurant and bar street of the Upper Town and the Faubourg Saint-Jean outside the gate.
  • Breakfast at Paillard, 1097 Rue Saint-Jean, a bakery for croissants and coffee before you leave.
  • Market snacks in December: the German Christmas Market has food stalls on six sites in the old town.

None of these publishes prices online, so we have not printed any.

If you only have 12 hours

Keep the Upper Town and the terrace. Do the Citadelle tour, walk Terrasse Dufferin, eat at Aux Anciens Canadiens and take the funicular down to Petit-Champlain and Place Royale. Drop the museum. Budget an hour each way by bus, or take the flat-fare taxi in, $29 (£22; C$41) by day, and a metered taxi back.

What 24 hours costs

Per person, at the official fares:

  • RTC route 80 in and out: $5.50 (£4.10; C$7.70)
  • Citadelle guided tour: $15.70 (£11.70; C$22)
  • Musée de la civilisation, adult 35 to 64: $19.20 (£14.40; C$27); ages 18 to 34 pay $15.70 (£11.70; C$22)

That is $40 (£30; C$57) before food. With the January hotel the total is about $136 (£102) per room; with the June rate it is about $195 (£146). If you take the flat-fare taxi in from the airport, add $29 (£22; C$41) per group, not per person, plus the fee and tax.

Getting there from the US and the UK

YQB is a small airport. From our US hubs, Newark has year-round United Express service, and JFK, Chicago O'Hare, Washington Dulles and Dallas/Fort Worth have seasonal flights, per the airport's route table on Wikipedia. There is no nonstop from the UK; the direct European link is Paris. Most British visitors fly into Montreal and take the train or bus to Quebec City.

Entry: US citizens need no eTA. Canada's border agency recommends a valid passport, and NEXUS members can use the card. British citizens flying in need an eTA, which costs $5 (£3.70; C$7) on the Government of Canada site.

When to go

December is the strongest month for a one-night trip. The Quebec City German Christmas Market (Marché de Noël allemand de Québec) runs from November 19 to December 23, 2026, open Thursday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., plus Monday to Wednesday, December 21 to 23. Its six sites are Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, the Jardins de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, Place d'Armes, Rue Sainte-Anne, Place D'Youville and the yard behind Holy Trinity Cathedral, and entry is free. See the best Christmas market city breaks.

January and February are cold, snowy and cheap; summer is warm and busy, with the highest hotel prices. The page's climate table has the monthly numbers. For a romantic weekend list, see the best city breaks for couples.
